Karuna-avatar Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu

Karuna-avatar Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu

Online class for Vidarbha devotees

July 19, 2020

I wish and I pray that all of you are healthy. I welcome you all. I was reading today, Srila Bhaktivinod Thakur said that we have to respect everybody; we should be respecting each and every living entity. You are not entities or people, you are special devotees. God has chosen you and me and made us fortunate. He has got us in connection with ISKCON, and connecting with ISKCON is connecting with Srila Prabhupada which connects us with disciples of Srila Prabhupada, and with disciples of disciples. And then this ISKCON connects us to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. This movement originally belongs to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Not only Mahaprabhu’s but also Nityananda Prabhu

ajanu-lambita-bhujau kanakavadhatau
sankirtanaika-pitarau kamalayataksau
visvambharau dvija-varau yuga-dharma palau
vande jagat-priyakaro karunavatarau [Caitanya Bhagavat]

Translation:

I offer my respects unto Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Sri Nityananda Prabhu, whose arms extend down to Their knees, who have golden yellow complexions, and who inaugurated the congregational chanting of the Holy Names. Their eyes resemble the petals of a lotus; They are the maintainers of all living entities; They are the best of brahmanas, the protectors of religious principles for this age, the benefactors of the universe, and the most merciful of all incarnations.

Karuna-avatar, reminds me of Corona, Covid-19. This corona pandemic has put everyone into sufferings. Karuna-avatar is the one who gives us mercy.

Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhuki…Jai!

This movement of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu has made us fortunate. Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu sent Srila Prabhupada and made him the Senapati bhakta of this movement or sankirtana army. So like this it started. Srila Bhaktisiddhant Saraswati Thakur said to Abhay Babu, “You seem to be very intelligent, go and preach about Gaudiya Vaishnava dharma in English”. So, Srila Prabhupada was in lifetime preparation, he prepared his whole life. He went to Jhashi and there more preparations and he established the ‘League of devotees’ organization [Sarva-bhauma sabha]. So preparations were going on in Jhansi but there were some obstructions and it did not work. So, devotees of Jhansi say ‘ISKCON was conceived in Jhansi and delivered in New York’. So, then all the planning of ISKCON began along with churning of thoughts, concept was prepared, it was conceived like the conception of a child and then the delivery took place, so ISKCON was delivered in New York. Srila Prabhupada established ISKCON in New York in the month of July. Last week, we were celebrating the anniversary of the same and lectures were also delivered. When ISKCON was registered, the 7 purposes of ISKCON were also registered. We were recollecting the memories of foundation day of ISKCON, many lectures were conducted out of which I also delivered one lecture.

4th purpose of ISKCON – Harinama sankirtana, teach and encourage others so that the Harinama given by Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu will be adopted by the world and the world will perform Harinama sankirtana this was the 4th objective. There is a department of ISKCON named SPT, they had chosen several devotees including me. ISKCON has established the Harinama kirtan ministry and the Governing Body Commission (GBC) has appointed me as the Harinama kirtana minister and told me to spread and discuss the Harinama. Anyway, all this is the history of how ISKCON was founded and how it was gradually expanded. Whatever Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said would happen, actually happened and is still happening as He said.

prthivite ache yata nagaradi grama
sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said, “My name will propagate universally, nagaradi grama.” As I said so many fortunate souls like you; while on the other hand the other souls entangled in this kaliyuga mandah, sa manda matayo, manda bhagya [S.B. 1.1.10], upadritah, creatures of kaliyuga are mandah meaning slowest in everything, their intelligence is mandah, sumanda-matayah means he is disguised. Mandah bhagya means their fortune is also unlucky. Most of the people in Kali are unlucky and they are always stuck into some or the other disturbances just like the current disturbance of Coronavirus. So, in the mid of this, Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu gradually prays and encourages other living entities to join this movement, let them move ahead and pray that Lord makes them fortunate too. All this will happen only when all of us together will “jaredakho tare kaho krishna upadesha”, “amaraagya guru hoiyataraeidesh”, so we have to follow these instructions. It’s Lord’s message and instruction. We cannot think that I am a fortunate soul now, so I don’t need to preach others. If we all are devotees or in process of becoming devotees or we have a feeling of becoming a devotee, then what happens,

titiksavahkarunikah
suhrdahsarva-dehinam
ajata-satrava?santah
sadhavahsadhu-bhusanah [SB 3.25.21]

Translation:

The symptoms of a sadhu are that he is tolerant, merciful and friendly to all living entities. He has no enemies, he is peaceful, he abides by the scriptures, and all his characteristics are sublime.

Like when we start becoming devotees during that time-period we reflect some qualities. So, in those qualities of Vaisnavas, ‘karuna’, titiksavah – tolerant, what kind of a devotee one is who is not tolerant! Devotee means tolerant, karunikah – every devotee should possess the quality of karuna, meaning merciful. If mercifulness is not getting generated in you, then what kind of a devotee are you; you cannot be a devotee. All these are qualities of none other than the Lord and these qualities of Lord are possessed by us. All the qualities that are possessed by the devotees are of the Lord. And in fact there is no one other than Lord; there is maya other than the Lord. But when we start becoming devotees, we start reflecting the qualities of the Lord. And when we become disciples of maya or kali, then likewise qualities reflect from us; those aren’t qualities, those are lower grade qualities. But as soon as our relationship is established with Krishna, the qualities of the Lord manifest in us. Amongst those qualities, the most important one is ‘karuna’. Whenever we pray to the Lord, what is the first prayer? “He Krishna Karuna-Sindhu”, karunya is the great quality of the Lord. If the Lord would not have been merciful, then the Lord would constantly reside in Goloka and we would remain suffering here.

golokam ca parityajya
lokanam trana karanat
kalau gauranga rupena
lila lavanya vigrahah [Markandeya Purana]

Translation:

For the purpose of delivering the people of Kali yuga, I shall give up Goloka, appear in the sublime form of Sri Gauranga, and perform enchanting pastimes.

The Lord has the quality of mercifulness. Lord leaves Golok and comes on the earth and stays and performs His pastimes. Although prakat-lila is not there, but Lord appeared and is still residing here. Lord appeared and His pastimes are captured in the form of Chaitanya Charitamrita, Chaitanya Bhagavat, Chaitanya Mangal. So, the Lord is still there in the form of His pastimes. We can see the Lord. If we hear the pastimes of the Lord then we can see Him. When the katha (story) of Ramayana started, Luv and Kush heard the Rama-katha from Valmiki, learned, understood, memorized the katha and they started delivering the katha in a musical way. They would deliver the Rama-katha by going to different places in the forest. For hearing their katha, many rishi-munis would gather and the rishi-munis used to get engrossed and absorbed while listening to the katha. Many rishi-munis said, “Oh, Luv Kush, we are very happy with your katha and when you recite the katha, we feel that it literally in front of us, we could see that. The words and sound of your katha makes us see the form”. And it is also said, from the sound comes the form.

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

By the hearing and recitation of these words also, this is shabda brahma, if we accentuate these words precisely and devoid of offenses, then these words only will take the form of Radha and Krishna. This is also called mantra-siddhi. By reciting these words, we become perfect, determinative. The Lord of this mantra gives us His darsana. So, from the recitation comes the form; if there was no form, how would the pastimes take place? If there was no form, how could we do the give and take. If there was no form, what is the need of Dhama? So, it all starts from form. If there is form, then there is existence of name, form, qualities, pastimes, dhama, etc.

So, we have to follow these instructions. Srila Prabhupada followed these instructions. I think when Srila Bhakti Siddhant Saraswati Thakura instructed Abhay Babu (he had not become Abhay Charanaravindra Bhaktivedanta Swami yet), so when Abhay Babu was instructed in Kolkata at that time, I think, by making Srila Bhakti Siddhant Saraswati Thakura a medium of instruction, Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is the one who instructed Abhay Babu, “Go and preach in the world”. These are the orders of Mahaprabhu Himself, Srila Bhakti Siddhant Saraswati Thakura became an instrument or a medium. But these orders or instructions must be of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. So, Srila Prabhupada followed those instructions. He went overseas from India, this was the exhibition of Srila Prabhupada’s compassion, karuna. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s is for all his followers.

We feel only Kurma Brahman got the instruction. Lord stayed at the house of Kurma Brahman (Kurma brahmin is a brahmin in Kurmashetra in Andhra Pradesh). He was fortunate to get both darshan and seva of the Lord. There is no question of whether the Lord is there or not. Caitanya Mahaprabhu stayed in the house of kurma brahmin and instructed him to stay in this place and yare dakho tare kaho krsna updesha. Kurma brahmin followed the given instructions.

When we have compassion then such instructions manifest. So you all become good devotees, become compassionate devotees. What can be given to a jiva to make him happy? Jiva needs the Lord. Unless the jiva gets Lord, he can’t be satisfied. This movement of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, formally established by Srila Prabhupada as ISKCON in New York. He travelled 14 times around the world in old age, remember his sacrifices, we are indebted to him as we have become devotees.

We have received Harinama, we have become spiritual practitioners, reading Gita and Bhagavatam and following four regulative principles:

1. No meat eating
2. No gambling
3. No intoxication
4. No illicit-sex

Many types of diseases manifest due to such sense gratification. Bhoga brings roga. Mental speculation is also gambling, save yourself from it. We are being saved from them. Following these 4 regulative principles is establishing and protecting dharma.

Daya dharma ka mula hai

If we don’t eat meat then we become kind and follow daya dharma. We don’t take intoxicants, so we become austere. We avoid illicit-sex, therefore we are clean. We don’t gamble, therefore we are truthful. Austerity, cleanliness, truthfulness, and kindness, these are four pillars of dharma. When we don’t do all these 4 things we establish adharma.
When we follow the 4 regulative principles in ISKCON, these rules are not made by Prahupada but they are the rules of Bhagavat dharma, they are mentioned in the first canto of Srimad Bhagavatam. So on this basis only Prabhupada gave these four regulative principles to the world.

sarva-dharman parityajya
mam ekam saranam vraja
aham tvam sarva-papebhyo
moksayisyami ma sucah [BG 18.66]

Translation:

Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.

This all is sin, when one breaks these 4 rules it is a great sin. People are busy with all that. The world is suffering from Corona, this disease originated from Wuhan city of China. In the slaughterhouses of China all types of animals are slaughtered and eaten, this Coronavirus is the aftermath of slaughtering animals. If you follow these four principles, dharma will protect you, dharmo rakshati rakshitah. Srila Prabhupada gave us these four rules and by following them we are saved from so many problems, knowingly or unknowingly we are protected from so many things.

So, if we do not do all these four things then what do we do? We have our satsanga like this which is going on which is most essential. Government made now-a-days rules, most essential shops will be open like medical shops, grocery shops. I was talking to Pune temple devotees. I said that opening the temple and giving darsana of the Lord to people and satsanga is the most essential thing. But the government thinks the most essential is alcohol. Some people demand, we want liquor, we want liquor, so the government opened liquor shops not only this but home delivery also. When I heard I was shocked, is this Bharat varsha where Ganga flows? No this is India where now liquor is flowing and where consuming alcohol is most essential. Lord’s name, his pastimes, not essential, stop them.

When we join ISKCON, we develop high thinking, thinking about the Lord. And under these comes,

sarve bhavantu sukhinah
sarve santu niramayah
sarve bhadraani pasyantu
maa kaschit duhkhabhaag bhavet

These are high thoughts thoughts of Gita and Bhagavatam, thoughts of the Lord. Like father, like son. We are children, Krishna and Balaram are our father. So we also become and we have thoughts like Krishna Balaram. We become broad hearted. Lord has manifested in the heart of the devotees, why not then his heart will be broad. So like this are our ISKCON or Hare Krishna followers, so you all have to become like this. So, stay in connection and association of devotees. There are rules of social distancing, so we can’t meet like we were meeting in the past, but this social media is helping us like this is going on now.

Vidarbha region devotees for your betterment this satsanga was organized. So every Sunday such satsanga will be there that was announced. I appreciate this idea and I congratulate all of you. I announce that this forum is open. While sitting at home you are getting satsanga. Today’s my turn, I am going door to door. Do you feel like this? I am in your home, meeting you. So take advantage of this platform or satsanga and also inform others also. This is sankirtana movement, the more, the merrier. United we stand and fight with Maya, it is also said sanghe shakti kaliyuge. We become strong when we all are united in kaliyuge. ISKCON is also such a forum which provides us sanga, association.

sadhu-sanga, sadhu-sanga — sarva-sastre kaya
lava-matra sadhu-sange sarva-siddhi haya [CC Madhya 22.54]

Translation:

The verdict of all revealed scriptures is that by even a moment’s association with a pure devotee, one can attain all success.

Ananta Sesa Prabhu was saying, it is Catur mass also so it’s time to read and chant more. If you still have not joined japa talk, you can enquire about it. We can chant together and after chanting we talk and have a discussion. You are welcomed for it every morning at 6 am.

Balarama jayanti and Janmastami are coming. These are very big festivals, only three weeks to go. Get ready, start preparation. ISKCON Janmastami means the biggest Janmastami, lakhs of devotees join. Some places 10 lakh devotees join, in Noida 3 to 4 lakh devotees join Janmashtami festival. All information will be circulated how online you all can have abhishek and arati. So temples like Nagpur, Amravati, Yavatmal, Akola, Dhamangaon, Kaundenyapur, Chamorshi or wherever ISKCON has reached. Understand how you can take part in the festival.

Kayena manasa vacha, don’t just see, take part in the festival. ISKCON Nagpur temple construction is coming up. A Santa nivas residential quarter for brahmacharis is coming up. We have to complete it in 4 to 5 months, so you can contribute to that project. Srila Prabhupada wanted a temple in Nagpur. So to fulfill his dream, we all have to join hands. So construction is on full swing and your support is required.

Haribol!

Vyasa Puja 2020

Vyasa Puja 2020

Today’s day, Ashadi Ekadashi Mahotsav is the biggest day in the year for Lord Vitthala, Lord Panduranga. Panduranga! Panduranga! Why is it the biggest day? Today devotees of the Lord come in large numbers to see the Lord. It doesn’t sound right to call them devotees of the Lord. Vithu maza lekur wala sangi gopalancha mela – this is a good relationship – vithu maza lekur wala, (my Vithoba is the father of many and He is in the association of the cowherd boys).

Who comes to see Lord Vitthala? Those who had forgotten before now come to see the Lord. The souls are bodily limbs of the Lord. They are parts and parcels of the Lord. Therefore they are very dear to the Lord. Such dear-most devotees could be His friends, cowherd boys, or parents. When such devotees come again to see the Lord, then what to say about the happiness of the Lord. This is the happiest day, biggest day for Lord Vitthala and also for His devotees. The Lord facilitated my birth on such a day. The Lord is happy, devotees are happy, hence I am also happy. You do not have to say, “Happy Birthday”. I know it is a happy day – happy for Lord Vitthala and also for the devotees of Vitthala, devotees of Krsna. Today’s day is the happiest day, anandi ananda gade jikade tikade chohikade (there is happiness every where). In the middle of the day when the happiness is spread all over, I was born. That’s why I want to celebrate my birthday, Vyasa Puja, in Pandharpur.

July 5, 1949, was a Tuesday. However today is Wednesday. Wednesday is Lord Vitthala’s day. This year’s Ashadi Ekadasi is being celebrated on Wednesday. Lord Sri Krsna was born on a Wednesday and Lord Rama was born on a Tuesday. I was also born on a Tuesday and I think that possibly my family members remembered this and that’s why they named me Raghunath. By the way I was called Raghya.

You have learnt that our true birth is the day when Guru gives us initiation, mantra, when the acaryas or Gurus connect us with the parampara. That day is our real birthday. It is the no more births, no more deaths day! From that point of view, Srila Prabhupada gave me my true birth. I was born in Vrindavan, in the courtyard of Radha Damodar in the month of Kartik. It was also the appearance day of Radha-kunda.

For the last few days as well as today I am listening to your glorifications. It is said, ‘vachane ka daridrata’, if we have to speak then why to be miserly in our speech, speak to your heart’s content, speak wholeheartedly, ‘vachane ka daridrata’. You were saying things which even I am not aware of. Am I really like this? You seem to know me better than I know myself. I was thinking I do not know myself, you know more than I do. Exaggeration is obvious as per the principle of vachane ka daridrata. I was thinking that you want to see me like this. Our Guru should be like this. He should have such qualities. You were saying that our Guru is like this, but I was thinking that you are expecting these qualities in me. I know that all these qualities are not in me, but you have big hearts and keep on saying, ‘Maharaja is like this and that’. In one sense, this is your greatness!

I was also thinking I have not manufactured all these qualities and I have not created these qualities in any factory or in my brain. These are only my qualities. No one has them and no one will have them. This is my property. This is mine, my creation. Only a fool claims this. All acaryas, all pure devotees have these qualities. Yet these qualities do not belong to them. The ultimate source of all these qualities is the Lord. It is said, ‘Like father, like son’. If the son has these qualities, then where do these qualities in him come from? They are in the father, that’s why the son has these qualities. These qualities of the son are not his own qualities. The Lord is the source of all these qualities. Not even a single quality belongs to me; I couldn’t label it with a stamp stating, “This is my quality.” I was also thinking all of you also have all these qualities. All these qualities are present in all of you. Every devotee has a specialty, one special quality. One may have lesser qualities and another may have more qualities. But every devotee has qualities. Devotee means soul. Every soul has qualities. Every soul is qualified. And why not?

Mamai vamso jiva loke jiva bhutah sanatanah

This is acintya-bhed-abheda. There are similarities as well as differences between us and the Lord. The Lord’s 50 qualities are present in the living entities. We were giving a presentation on the ‘Super Excellence of Gaudiya Vaisnavism’. At that time we showed you a chart where the living entities have 50 qualities of the Lord’s 64 qualities. This is the similarity, abheda. What is the difference, bheda? The Lord’s 50 qualities are in the living entities, but in a lower percentage.

Discover yourself! Know yourself! There is discovery and invention. What is the meaning of discover? There is something, some element, some tattva and one has to uncover it! It is covered and you have to only uncover it. When we discover, find ourselves, then we all will also know that these qualities are present in us also. We also have these qualities.

bhoktaram yajna-tapasam
sarva-loka-mahesvaram
suhrdam sarva-bhutanam
jnatva mam santim rcchati (BG 5.29)

Prabhupada called it the ‘Peace formula!’ How is the Lord? suhrdam sarva-bhutanam – suhrdam, means friend. Whose friend is He? Sarva bhutanam, Lord is the friend of all living entities. This is Bhagavad Gita and when we see Bhagavatam, there it is said, suhrdah sarva dehinam. Sadhavah sadhubhusanah – it is all about the devotees. Sadhus are like this. What should one do immediately? Take a selfie or something! They are beautified with the qualities,

trnad api sunicena
taror api sahisnuna
amanina manadena
kirtaniyah sada harih

These are the ornaments, the jewellery. This is the beauty of a devotee, of a soul. In the Bhagavad Gita it is said that the Lord is the friend of all the souls. In the Bhagavatam it is said, the devotee, sadhu is the friend of all the souls. Suhrdam sarva bhutanam, suhrdam sarva dehinam, you say bhutanam or dehinam, it is the same thing. What is common? Suhrdam, they are both suhrdam, friend of all living entities. This is one example. Being friendly is one of the 26 qualities of the Vaisnava. The soul has this quality. Here we consider someone as our friend and someone as our enemy. This is the effect of the three modes of material nature, specially the mode of passion. The effect of the mode of ignorance is feeling sleepy. When there is the effect of Rajo guna, then we start fighting.

yadrccha-labha-santusto
dvandvatito vimatsarah
samah siddhav asiddhau ca
krtvapi na nibadhyate

Lord says this. What should one do? One should cross over the dvandva, duality – this is a friend and this is an enemy. This comes only when we are in bondage, in lock down. Who is responsible for this lockdown? The three modes of material nature, the powerful bondage, the shackles, they make us think like this, due to lust, anger and greed.

Devotees, disciples, friends, brothers and sisters, understand yourself. Ke ami? Such was Sanatana Goswami’s question. When he met Caitanya Mahaprabhu the first time, he asked, ‘Ke ami? Kene amar jare tapa-traya? Who am I and why are these miseries of the world giving me trouble? Please tell me.’ Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu explained everything. Sanatan Goswami asked this question on our behalf. For us Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu answered the question. It is for us only that Lord Krsna had dialogues with Arjuna and therefore there is this parampara.

evam parampara-praptam imam rajarsayo viduh

Sri Krsna is Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu with whom the parampara proceeds further. He is the Acarya of the Gaudiya Vaisnava parampara, and this is the arrangement of the Lord. In this way we can understand who we are. We should come to know that we are not from here. We are not from this world. We belong to Krsna. Right now we have our relatives, our family, husband, wife, bride, groom. They get married and then children take birth. They call it the family tree. We are in the centre – andha kupam. We are hanging in the dark well, and whoever is around us, is ours. But the real situation is different. That’s why the Lord comes to this world from time to time.

We have forgotten the Lord, but the Lord has not forgotten us. Grown up sons forget their parents. Daughters do not forget their parents as much as the sons do. So it is shown. But do parents forget their children? I was thinking, how I can talk like this as I am not a mother and father. But I am also a father. ‘Ham do aur hamare do’-we two (husband and wife) and our two kids! But when one becomes a Guru, a spiritual master, then even though he is a sannayasi, he becomes the father of 200 disciples, 2000 disciples. Our Jayapataka Maharaja has 40,000 disciples. For the disciples the Guru is mother and father. Maybe disciples can forget the spiritual master by becoming guru bhogi, tyagi or drohi, but the Guru can never forget, just like a mother and father can never forget. The mother and father are grihasta, family. They are a smaller unit. The Guru is also small compared to the Lord. The Lord is the father, aham bija pradah pitah; when the material mother and father do not forget. The Gurus who play a role of mother and father, do not forget, then the Lord who is the original father, the original mother, can He forget? No, He never forgets. That is why the Lord comes to this world. He comes to remind us, ‘I am yours. You are mine. You are not this body. You are the soul’. The Lord comes and leaves after making all the arrangements. Dialogues of Gita become the Granth, scripture of Gita. He performs many lilas. We get the Ramayana. Lord Rama came. His name, form, qualities, pastimes get glorified in Ramayana. Then there is Bhagavatam, Mahabharat, ante ca madhye ca harih sarvatra giyate

When the Lord appeared 5000 years ago, He came to Pandharpur from Dvaraka. This is History, fact. The Lord heard the prayer of His devotee. Pundalika who offered special prayers to the Lord. ‘Lord, You stay here.’ The Lord Dvarakadhish is staying in Pandharpur. He is Vitthala, He is Panduranga. Panduranga! Panduranga! Panduranga! Panduranga! Panduranga!

Whether the Lord came 5000 years ago or not, is no question. Is there any proof that the Lord came to earth and performed many lilas? What is the proof? Yes! Vitthala Bhagavan is the full proof. For the fools, this is the proof. Not only did the Lord come, but we all know how He looks?

Sundar te dyan ubhe vite vari
Kar katavari theuniya

Makar kunddale talapate shravani
Kanthi kaustubh mani virajit

Tuka mhane maze hechi sarv sukh
pahina srimukha avadine.

Lord gives realizations to such acaryas. Even after looking at the Deities, we still have doubts. Is He the Lord? But some devotees take darsana of these Deities,

Govinda govinda mala lagaliya chanda, maga govinda te kaya bheda nahi deva taya,

This is not just recitation. Tukarama Maharaja wrote an abhanga in such a way that we sing them. These are his realizations, maga govinda de kaya bheda nahi deva taya. There is no difference between the Deity of Govinda and Govinda. He is Govinda and I am looking at Govinda. I don’t know what is a Deity? I am looking at the Lord.

All these arrangements are facilitated by the Lord. Then the acaryas give the package of the parampara, all scriptures, all mantras, vidhi vidhan, nishedh, etc, and give it the name dharma. This is religion, the laws of the Lord. We follow these rules and regulations and understand the philosophy,

janma karma ca me divyam
evam yo vetti tattvata
then what happens,

tyaktva deham punar janma – no rebirth
Then what happens?
naiti mam eti

Mam eti, eti means he goes, sa-eti, so where does he go? Mam, he comes towards Me. Why does the Lord say this? Has He said it in vain? Does it have any meaning or has the Lord just said it without thinking? The Lord knows what He is talking about. That is why He came here, Golokam ca parityajya lokanam trana-karanat All the arrangements are done by the Lord so that we can again return to our village, return to our home.
Leave the talks of settling down here. Who wants to settle in this world? People say, “He is well settled.” And then comes corona and it is all finished. Forget about settling down in this world. Who wants to settle down in this world? No one has ever and no one ever will. Just when it looks like he will get settled, then death comes. Sometimes he constructs a new home, the house warming takes place and something happens. He died. During his entire life time he was thinking of getting settled and something happened. People think, “We are not able to settle down here, so let’s go to the moon.” Nowadays some fools are selling plots on the moon. Many are booking their plot. We could not settle here, so let’s settle on the moon. There is no question of getting settled here. We have to come to this conclusion that no settlement is possible. As quickly as possible, let’s go, amhi jato amuchya gava, back to Godhead.

There are some examples like this. Tukarama Maharaja showed the world. Can anyone really go to Vaikuntha? Yes, Tukarama Maharaja went. Ajamila also went. All the time the shuttle service between the earth and Goloka or Vaikuntha is going on, day and night. We cannot see it all the time, but sometimes the Lord shows through the example of Tukarama Maharaja and Dhruva Maharaja and many more. All this is done by the Lord which we call dharma, religion. The same arrangement is being done in ISKCON on behalf of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Our parampara acaryas were doing the preparations. A lifetime in preparation! Prabhupada was preparing his whole life for this.

Has Prabhupada started from scratch? No! Before Srila Prabhupada, so much preparation was done by Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur. And before him, hasn’t Bhaktivinoda Thakur done anything? Like that, every Acarya of the parampara makes the necessary preparations. Then the next acarya takes it forward and then the next generation, devotees, acaryas, those who do yare dekho tare kaho krsna upadesa, take it forward. And finally it is for me and all of us assembled here, the humans present on the planet to take it forward. Lord made Srila Prabhupada an instrument, nimitta matram bhava savyasachin. Like this the Lord made perfect arrangements, not to settle here, but to go back. Let’s go! Let’s go!

We have become one part of this arrangement and our journey is still continuing. You are on the way back home, back to Godhead. For such an arrangement we thank the Lord, thank the acaryas of our parampara and especially we thank Srila Prabhupada ki Jai! We will always be indebted to Srila Prabhupada. What he did for the world is matchless. Na bhute na bhavisyati, never happened before and will never happen again. Such are his arrangements. We are indebted, but we also need to get free from this debt. It is very difficult to get free from this debt. One time the disciples of Srila Prabhupada were asking Srila Prabhupada, ‘How can we get rid of this debt?’ Srila Prabhupada said, “No! No, you cannot get free from this debt.” Then after thinking a while Prabhupada said, ‘Yes! Yes, one thing can be done.’ And what is that? ‘You do as I did’ This is a very famous statement of Srila Prabhupada. ‘You do as I did.’ In other words we can say, ‘The work which I have started, you endeavour to take it forward by using your energy and intelligence’. We have to do that. I am trying my best to continue the work started by Srila Prabhupada, by following his lotus feet. Many of us are trying our best. It is a big team. In the beginning we were only 5000 disciples of Srila Prabhupada and at that time it was known as ‘Prabhupada days’. We were 5000 disciples, and slowly slowly, day by day, the number is growing and growing and growing ….
It is the request unto all of you …..

There are six principles favorable to the execution of pure devotional service: (1) being enthusiastic, (2) endeavoring with confidence, (3) being patient, (4) acting according to regulative principles [such as sravanam, kirtana, visnoh smaranam [SB 7.5.23]—hearing, chanting and remembering Krsna], (5) abandoning the association of nondevotees, and (6) following in the footsteps of the previous acaryas. These six principles undoubtedly assure the complete success of pure devotional service. (NOI 3)

May you get such bhakti. We are expecting support from you. Srila Prabhupada also has expectations from you and we are expressing our desire on behalf of Srila Prabhupada that you will give your full support and contributions. Will there be any benefit in such contributions? It will be the best welfare. What will be that welfare? Krsna prapti hoya jaha hoite, What will you gain? Krsna prapti – you will get Krsna. Till now we were running behind Maya prapti, to get maya, aham mama. Due to our foolishness we were running behind that only. Now we are coming on the right track, becoming well organised. In his last days Srila Prabhupada said, ‘If you love me…’ Do you love Srila Prabhupada? It is easy to say. It is called lip service. We say, “Yes! Yes! I love you.” But Prabhupada said, ‘I want to see your love for me, not only hear it.” How will you show it? How you cooperate with each other, co – operation means together – if you will work by cooperating with each other, then you love me.’

I could also say this. For the past few days there was a disciples’ sammelan and you were expressing your love. We have heard that love and now we want to see it.

On this Vyasa puja day, we are requesting you all, we are expecting, desiring that all of you will cooperate with each other and will give and take support. Srila Prabhupada said, ‘How will you keep this institution together after I am gone? Protect this institution after I am gone?’ How can it be protected? How will it become strong? In Srila Prabhupada’s movement there are many different activities of Prabhupada’s disciples and even of grand-disciples. They have their own areas of operation. There are movements within the movement. Note that it should not clash with other movements which are within the international movement established by Srila Prabhupada. Our karya-kshetra or my karya-kshetra (area of operation) is as per the orders of Srila Prabhupada only. Prabhupada gave personal instructions to everyone. Sometimes he gave orders through letters. Some services are done before asking, some services are done after asking and some devotees don’t do the service even after asking. It may be possible that we could not follow some orders. That is a possibility. But we are trying to follow all the orders.

These padayatra projects are part of that only – padayatras, parikramas. You saw the letter from Prabhupada. Prabhupada is saying, ‘This is the land of Tukarama and the politicians are spoiling it. Awake the Krsna consciousness in Maharastra.’ Regarding padayatras, Srila Prabhupada said, ‘… millions of carts all over the world’. Such is the desire expressed by Prabhupada.

How many bullock-carts should be there? Millions of carts! Prabhupada is known for this. Prabhupada could have said dozens of carts or hundreds of carts, but what did Prabhupada say? Millions of carts! For how many lifetimes do we have to be engaged? I don’t know. He gave the order, but to follow the order, needs lots of time and energy and power; Prabhupada gives an order and with that He gave the facilities also. Krsna gives the facilities as Prabhupada has desired.

Most of my books are about this service only – Vraja-mandala darsana or Bombay Is My Office. I received Srila Prabhupada’s association and it is related to that. The experiences with Prabhupada during ‘The Mayapur Vrindavan Festivals’ is another book. We had many meetings or conversations with Srila Prabhupada, so there is one book like that – In Conversation with Srila Prabhupada. The first ever Padayatras are captured in Volume One Padayatra: On the Road with Lord Caitanya. Volumes 2 and 3 are also going to come. Srila Prabhupada gave me some instructions regarding chanting, so chanting is also going on. Then there was a book on this subject. Prabhupada was expecting that disciples will write books. This is also service for present and future generations. Prabhupada was thinking about a Worldwide International Society. I am expecting your contribution in my zone which is within Srila Prabhupada’s worldwide society. And if you give such support and contributions then I will understand that, ‘You love me’.

Srila Prabhupada ki jai! Sri Vitthala Rukmini ki jai! ISKCON Pandharpur ki jai! Radha Pandharinath ki jai! Radha Parthasarathi ki jai! Radha Rasabihari ki jai! Radha Madhava ki jai! Nitai Gaurasundar ki jai! Jagannath Baladeva Subhadra ki jai!

These are some special of the special Deities I have served as pujari, so I am remembering Them on this day. Hari Haribol!

The essence of all topics – The topics of the Lord

The essence of all topics – The topics of the Lord

Translation: O Maitreya, O friend of the distressed, the glories of the Supreme Lord can alone do good for people all over the world. Therefore, just as bee’s collect honey from flowers, kindly describe the essence of all topics – the topics of the Lord.

Purport: There are many topics for different persons in different modes of material nature, but the essential topics are those in relationship with the Supreme Lord. Unfortunately, materially affected conditioned souls are all more or less averse to topics of the Supreme Lord because some of them do not believe in the existence of God and some of them believe only in the impersonal feature of the Lord. In both cases there is nothing for them to say of God.

Both the nonbelievers and the impersonalists deny the essence of all topics; therefore, they engage in topics of relativity in various ways, either in sense gratification or in mental speculation. For the pure devotees like Vidura, the topics of both the mundaners and the mental speculators are useless in all respects. Thus Vidura requested Maitreya to talk of the essence only, the talks of Krsna, and nothing else.

So if everyone in the world would demand such a thing of ‘kindly describe the essence of all topics – the topics of the Lord’ and making this request unto the person who is qualified to talk about the topics, such combination and many, many such combinations all over the world – if this was to happen, that would change a lot of things in this world.

Unfortunately as Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita,
manusyanam sahasresu kascid yatati siddhaye {B.G 7.3}.

Out of thousands and thousands – kascid yatati siddhaye, someone, one, two are trying for siddhi the perfection and that’s so difficult. Now those enquiries are not being made, nowadays no-one wants to hear. although someone is approaching someone’s house nearby or next door or on the telephone, long distance calling, faxing, common communications – questions answers are very common.

On the streets in the marketplace, in the schools, colleges, parliament and everywhere someone is begging him ‘please tell me, please please’ he is crying ‘please’ and then there is someone who responds to that. Even birds early morning they get up and then they are making some enquiries, we don’t understand what is being enquired but some enquiry is there and the response is also there. and the world is always making – people in world are making enquiries and then there are responses.

srotavyadini rajendra nrnam santi sahasrasah (SB 2.1.2)

Sukadeva Goswami says, as soon as Sukadeva Goswami started speaking 5000 years ago, when he had to speak to king Parikshit and Parikshit had just enquired that was when the dialogue was just about to begin and King Parikshit asked ‘what should one hear? What must one talk about and what one should worship and chant? Especially the mrimanusya, one who is about to die. Please tell me what he should do – what about chanting and hearing?’

So that was one question raised and in fact in response to this one question the whole Srimad Bhagavatam was recited. So recitation began – Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya. You don’t have to say it, Sukadeva Goswami said it and then he said one sentence, second sentence, only second statement after he said Om Namo Bhagavate – this is the very beginning of the seven day discourse, the dialogue between Sukadeva Goswami and king Parikshit.

The very second or we could call the second sentence, Sukadeva Goswami says ‘Srotavyadini rajendra, O Raja O King’ Srotavyadini rajendra nrnam santi sahasrasah. There are thousands – sahasrasah means thousands. There are thousands and thousands of topics of Srotavya, means hearing, Srotavyadini means etcetera, for hearing etc. nrnam santi sahasrasah people are always fond of thousands of topics. Who are these people?

apasyatam atma tattvam grhesu grha medhinam

Those who are in grha, in house – in their home, grha medhinam, the fallen householders. apasyatam atma tattvam – those who do not realise or do not see, Pasya means to see and apasyatam means to not see. What do they not see? atma tattvam – atma the soul, the self and tattva the science of self. They do not understand and for such people- Srotavya, when it comes to some talk or some hearing, nrnam santi sahasrasah – there are thousands and thousands of topics. Every single person, normally some people must be up, at least some people must be up by 8.15. What is today? Saturday so no work so it is to early to get up at 8.15.

So there are no cars as yet but at least some people are up and they must be making enquiries so no-one, each person is making different, different enquiry. all day today there will be enquiries made and they will be different from yesterday’s enquiries. and each person is making different enquiry. The world like this goes on till the end and none of those enquiries or most of those enquiries would have nothing to do with Hari katha. So this is what goes on in the world but Vidura is not interested in such topics because king Parikshit is not interested in such topics.

This statement even though we are reading in the chapter entitled ‘Vidhua’s talks with Maitreya’ then ‘Maitreya talks to Vidura.’ So this is just a reference, Sukadeva Goswami is making a reference to that dialogue but he is talking to who? Sukadeva Goswami is talking to King Parikshit and he is interested in hearing topics about Krishna. So Sukadeva Goswami is just trying to break about those topics ‘oh yes, yes I know.’ One time Vidura and Maitreya Muni had just met. and they talked about Krishna. You are interested in hearing and talking about Krishna, right?

You are interested so I can tell you, soon after Lord Krishna’s departure, Maitreya Muni and Uddhava they are on their way to Badrikashram and they were asked by the Lord to meet Vidura and pass on some messages. So on their way to Badrikashram they found Vidura and when Vidura and Maitreya Muni met, they talked about the Lord you know, they talked about Krishna. They didn’t talk about – ‘that’s what I want to hear!’ King Parikshit is thinking like this ‘yes, yes that’s what I want to hear.’

So Sukadeva Gsowami just kind of brings up the topics, those topics that king Parikshit is interested in, the topic that will be beneficial to king Parikshit who is about to get out of the body, leave his body. So here Vidura is ‘yes, I want to hear.’ You know Vidura, who is Vidura? Yamaraja! Vidhura is incarnation of Yamaraja, Yamaraj ahas appeared as Vidura and what is the position of Yamaraja? Yes, he is the superintendent of death and at the same time in Vaishnava circle, the circle of the devotees of the Lord, he is Mahajana, great soul.

There are twelve great souls, famous great souls. Svayambhu – that is Brahma. Svayambhur naradah sambhuh, that is Shiva. Four Kumaras, Kapila – kapila manuh. Prahlado janako bhismo. Bali Maharaja, Sukadeva Goswami and Yamaraja. In fact this list which we just said, this was said by Yamaraja himself to his Yamadutas, his messengers. He said ‘We twelve people know everything about the Lord.’

So Yamaraja is one of those twelve personalities and now he has appeared – normally he has to always deal with the deaths and judging ‘get the records out.’ So then his all pious activities are recorded – so much grand total, all his pious activities. ‘Oh but he also chanted few rounds when he was a new Bhakta.’ ‘Okay let’s do this – plus and minus the whole accumulative, total. Okay human birth, no Vaikuntha and no hell for him so another human birth. He made a little progress by that chanting so human birth. Then he could be given birth in some Hare Krishna family – ‘let him go to Gurukula.’

Like that he always has to go with the cards as everyone is performing some activities, immediately the witnesses, sun is witnessing, moon is witnessing, air, directions, night, day and in the abode of Yamaraja there is always traffic going back and forth. all those who are witnessing they are coming to report and tell the records of each one of us – there is one page for us, for you there’s one page, for me – all of us there is one page of these records. If we chant Hare Krishna the records go on changing. When we do lots of chanting and performing devotional service and no more pious, impious, all finished.

Then if we go on chanting then ‘oh this person? We have nothing to do with him anymore.’ Then who will deal with this person now? Vishnudutas, now he is in jurisdiction of Vishnu, so it is transferred that name – ‘this name is out, you leave this name. So Kurma he has done a lot of cooking so his name, let’s transfer it now, let it go to Vaikuntha and when his time comes, Yamadutas our messengers – they are no more. Nothing to do with Kurma, he is now – Vishnudutas will take care of him.’ In fact they are happy also, one less person to handle. Don’t think there is a competition that they want to handle more and more cases and that they’re unhappy when someone is no more on their list. So this Yamaraja has difficult task and heavy duty management constantly there are – dying goes on day and night. Is there any day in which there is no dying, death?

In america any day is there that day there is no death? In India such day does not exist, every moment people are dying.

ahany ahani bhutani gacchantiha yamalayam

Every day they are going to Yamalaya the abode of Yamaraj.

sesah sthavaram icchanti kim ascaryam atah param {S.B 7.2.57}

Yudhishthira Maharaja said ‘everyday – most wonderful thing is everyday ahany ahani bhutani, everyday living entities are dying in big quantities, big number’ so Yamaraja he’s busy all the time. So he wanted to take some break and he wanted to time his break, he wanted to go away from his abode and take birth at the time of Krishna’s appearance on this planet. and when Krishna appeared, Vidura also appeared – Yamaraja also appeared as Vidura.

Vidura means one who knows, he was very knowledgeable and that is why he always tried to instruct his two brothers, Pandu and Dhritarashtra. Pandu was no more, he died. and then Pandu’s children were also under the care of Dhritarastra. But his children did not get along. Dhritarastra’s son Duryodhan, he was kind of a crook and I mean no offences at the feet of Duryodhan but he is very famous, he is always competing with the Pandavas, very envious, torturous.

and when various things happened Vidura used to tell his brother Dhritarastra ‘This is no good you better control your children, especially Duryodhan.’ and Dhritarastra was, he used to understand this. He used to agree with Vidura but because he was too much attached to his sons, especially to Duryodhan, he was not able to act upon the advice of Vidura.

and there was one time he also gave advise to Dhritarastra and this time Duryodhan, he came to know that such advice is being by Vidhura so he gets very angry and he did not appreciate this advice. This was not being appreciated for a long, long time and then some insulting words coming from Duryodhan.

and Vidura, right there on the spot he just walked out, he went to the forest and went on pilgrimage and in the meantime – I’ll give you a little Mahabharata background information. In the meantime the battle of Kurukshetra took place. Vidura was away from the family and Lord Krishna from Kurukshetra where battle took place, he had returned to Hastinapur. From Hastinapur Krishna went to Dwarka and then Krishna left the planet and that’s the time Maitreya and Uddhava had met Krishna and Vidhura was out of touch, he didn’t know all that what had happened. He didn’t know about this Kurukshetra war, he didn’t know that Krishna was no more on this planet, that he is very anxious to know – very, very anxious.

Hare? katham eva kathasu saram – the essence of all the topics – as the bees, Puspebhya take honey from each flower. Honey in the flowers are the essence of the flowers, the most essential thing is the honey. The honey bees are coming and they’re taking. So Vidura who had come to associate with the Lord, he had association with the Lord – Lord was very kind. You all know the story how the one time Duryodhan had arranged a nice lunch engagement for Krishna and Krishna had gone also, with the intension of eating there but once when Krishna reached he did not get good vibes.

This is all american way of saying things, so that you understand this I have picked up some of this. So Duryodhan – his intentions were not good. The lunch, this food that he had cooked and invited Krishna, the whole purpose was kind of, was trying to bribe Krishna. Trying to impress upon him, take him on his side. This is the time when Krishna had gone to see if there could be some compromise – this was before the battle of Kurukshetra. Krishna had gone to avoid the war, see if the war could be avoided. ‘Whatever, five villages – at least five villages?’

‘No! Five villages, that’s a lot of land and property you are talking about! I will not even part with how much land? Land that sits on top of the needle, not even that much land I will spare for the Pandavas. and you are talking about five villages? Forget it!’

So what Krishna was trying, what they say that he encouraged arjuna to fight, but ultimately when everything was tried and nothing worked then Prabhupada said that violence is a nice quality. It’s nice to be non-violent but non-violence is not a policy to be adopted under all circumstances, sometimes violence is necessary. So Krishna and arjuna, they are known for being non-violent but if there has to be violence for the benefit of the society and the world then let there be violence. Let’s prepare for killing, let there be bloodshed. So that is why at that time Krishna had come and he was just trying different things.

Duyodhan had also erected nice gates, arches, he knew what way Krishna was going to come from and he had arranged very nice receptions but his whole intention was to just get him on his side and not go for this compromise and all that. So Lord did not eat there, everything was all ready, ready to go, all set so Krishna just walked away. and then he was very happy to eat in a Kutir –Vidura’s kutir a little hut, his dwelling – Vidura and Vidurani. Vidura and his wife were staying and when guests like Krishna, not only VIP but VVIP, very important person had come to their simple residence they all became overwhelmed. They didn’t know what to do and how to receive such an exalted personality. When time came to feed Krishna, then we know what Vidurani did? She was giving Krishna some banana peels. She chopped them nicely. Maybe she was cutting banana and she put them on the plate and threw away and she offered peel to Lord Krsna. and Krishna is absorbed in talking and is eating and says ‘aha, where did you get nice fruit like this, which garden is it?’

‘Yes’ Vidura is talking and is spicing his talks with his banana peels, so Krishna was not eating banana or banana peels, he was eating the devotion of Vidura and Vidurani. Krishna is not hungr, Krishna is hungry for our devotion. It doesn’t matter – patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya.. If there is bhakti, then Krishna is ready to sit down and relish your offering. It doesn’t matter how small or big it is but here it was a big offering Duryodhan had prepared, Krishna was not interested – he just walked away.

So this is Vidura we are talking about, this is Vidura who was one time – he is Yamaraja. So certainly being a Mahajana, he is interested in hearing about Krishna and he was away from Krishna for a lot of time and he had no news of the Panadava family and whereabouts of Krishna so naturally as he is meeting Maitreya, the first thing on his mind ‘please tell me about Krishna and how is everything?’

Kathasu saram – the essence. Tad asya kausarava sarma datur – one who awards good fortune, he is addressing Maitreya ‘Kausarava. Oh Maitreya. and you are what? You are one who awards good fortune.’ also he has been described here as ivarta bandho. He is Bandho, he is friend of one who is in distress. ‘So please talk, please talk’

Sivaya nah kirtaya tirtha kirteh- bring some auspiciousness to our life, kirtaya by glorifying the Lord. and Prabhupada talking again in the purport how the world is either talking about some mundane topics or how the world is talking about some impersonal topics, topics about the impersonality of God and both of these topics are useless. and they are not certainly sara, or the essence of all the topics, one thing is just mundane and material and the topics about impersonalism, that is not completely true – it is the truth but incomplete. Brahman is one of the aspects of realization.

Brahmeti paramatmeti bhagavan iti sabdyate {S.B 1.2.11}

Lord could be realised as Brahman, as Paramatma and ultimately as Bhagavan. So some talk of Brahman, that is the truth but not complete, it is incomplete, so it not certainly the essence of all topics. Our acaryas are engaged in talking about Krishna’s guna, rupa, namnam.

Sri radhika madhavayor apara madhurya lila guna rupa namnam {Guru astaka 5}.

Sri radhika madhavayor apara – for Radha Madhava the spiritual master what does he do? Why do I offer my humble obeisances at the lotus feet of my spiritual master? Because he is always engaged in talking about Radha Madhava. Radha madhavayor apara madhurya lila – in conjugal, loving pastimes and guna their qualities, rupa their form, nama their names.

Prati ksanasvadana lolupasya vande guroh sri caranaravindam

Prati ksana means at every step, Prati ksanasvadana – asvadan means drinking. Prati ksanasvadana lolupasya – Lolup means he is addicted, his addiction. He is addicted to drinking or feeding others all the time Prati ksana, topics related with Radha Madhava’s Madhurya Lila, their qualities, their names, their form. This is what all Vaishnava acharyas do and that is the essence of all the topics.

That is very pleasing to the soul, the soul is pleased and that is the way to develop detachment from the worldly things – mundane or impersonal topic, you have no more interest. So that means topics in Bhagavatam, all those topics by hearing and reading those topics, one would naturally develop distaste for anything that is mundane or speculative, speculation impersonal talk.

‘Yes, yes God exists’ Mayavadi may say ‘but He doesn’t see’ and Prabhupada says in Isopanishad ‘a person who cannot see we call him what?’ He is blind, so Prabhupada says ‘So Mayavadi says Yes, yes God exists but he is blind. Yes, yes God exists but he doesn’t speak.’ One who doesn’t speak we call him dumb. They say ‘God exists but God is dumb, God is deaf, God is lame or helpless.’ Is that God; is that the description of God? Who would care for such a God? ‘I can’t see, I can’t see – I am just a nobody. I have a form and even I am attracted to my own form, such a beautiful form I have. and I’m trying to make it more beautiful by applying different things and cutting nails properly and hairstyles. But God doesn’t have, he has no form. Poor God has no form.’

So Prabhupada he has simple argument ‘so that means you are more than God. Even you have form but God cannot have form so what kind of God are you talking about?’ Who would care for such a God? Even you are superior tom him, you have form and he has no form.’ That God is described as Purnam.

om purnam adah purnam idamm purnat purnam udacyate
purnasya purnam adaya purnam evavasisyate {Isopanisad 1}

Lord is Purnam, complete. If someone could be complete and incomplete, both- If you say he has no form, then God is incomplete or in order for God to be complete, Purnam then God should have form and no form. That is how God is personal and impersonal.
But that impersonal, even that has origin in personality, the impersonal feature, the Brahman the light comes from the personality of Krishna.

any questions, comments?

I don’t know much, anyone could tell more about? I don’t get to hear much. There’s some other Puranas that focus more on his life and Maitreya Muni. There must be one of his confidential associates when the Lord left the planet he chose – Lord chose to meet with Maitreya.

We have limits so being living entities, first of all tiny living entities and then the conditioning is also there and in the process of preaching and teaching we want to make sure we really are able to maintain our spiritual life without any casualty or setback and not go for imitation.

‘Oh! Nityananda Prabhu did this, oh! Chaitanya Mahaprabhu did this.’ Prabhupada writes in Chaitanya Charitamrta, I think he says ‘Chaitanya Mahaprabhu indiscriminately chanted and dances amongst anybody everybody including animals.’ So he says ‘We cannot do it. Especially chanting and going to the forest and especially where there are lions and tigers and snakes.’ Im not sure whether I would. Yesterday I took this little walk and went this way and first turned left while chanting and then one big dog came running.

a big black dog, you know dogs – it took me some time to realise that he was tied by a strong rope. It took fifteen seconds for it to just come all the way and reach me so I stepped back, I was trying to go away from the dog. Somehow I didn’t remember the pastimes of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and this is just a dog, what to speak if he was a lion or a tiger. and this is just in the midst of this Denver town and what to speak of being in a forest by yourself. Then Prabhupada makes a point that the present day society is like the animal society. They are like the tigers and the lions in that they eat and bark and fight.

Prabhupada said that we could be happy in limiting ourselves and preaching to the human beings and that is as good as Chaitany Mahaprabhu’s preaching to the animals. He preached to the animals and let us preach to the human animals, he considered that as the same. Then there is further guideline from the scriptures that one who is in second class position, there is discrimination. We serve God, we are friendly with the devotees and we preach to the faithful and avoid the demoniac – those who are not faithful they are not going to give aural reception to what you have to say. They don’t go by logic and argument there’s no way -like fanatic Christians – they are useless to try to make your points and you are just wasting Krishna’s energy because your energy is Krishna’s energy so you should be wise.

Prabhupada also explains that this is the whole art of preaching, no imitation – you are only a small person and you have only so much energy and so much time and it should be appropriately utilised in the service of Krishna without wasting. So preaching to the faithless is considered an offence against the holy name and because we have limited power we are limited in number, there are only so many devotees and the public is a large population so there has to be some discrimination.

Prabhupada gives an example that when on the battlefield, fierce battle going on and arrows going back and forth – no more arrows these days there are guns and missiles and so many casualties, some half dead and hand broke off or neck chopped off or bullet stuck in the chest. So all kinds of casualties so there are the red cross mission and there are doctors there – it is their desire to help everyone, cure everyone, recuperate everyone but Prabhupada makes a point that a wise doctor knowing his limitations and knowing that only so many doctors are there and that unlimited person need medical care, they will not waste their time in trying to fix up somebody’s body who is kind of a gone case.

It is hopeless, there is no way – ‘In five ten minutes he will be gone but let me use this five, ten minutes to do a little first aid and he will be okay. He will even get up and fight. Let me just get the bullet out of his chest and he will be okay or let me apply some ointment and little ointment and he will be probably.

So the doctor will not spend time with those who are lost cases, not under war going in all that. He will handle only those who are easily curable cases first before going for those who are bad ones the worst ones, the hopeless ones. So this is our position also, everyone needs our help – devotees, Krishna’s help but the devotees are only a handful. We must pick and choose so our energy is properly utilised and these persons end up becoming Krishna conscious and they come closer to Krishna. Doesn’t that make sense? So being compassionate for all the fallen souls and wanting to help everybody, fine but how are we going to manage?

So it’s kind of some management, preaching and some priorities for preaching to new devotees from what I could handle, no? If there is some more advanced senior devotee he can handle much more. So we should also be like ‘No, no not me. I will introduce you to Jayapataka Maharaja who is coming this afternoon. Why don’t you come over?’ Like that we should do, not that I can preach to anyone and everyone – no, no. Don’t see that I could handle him; I have enough emanation of power.

Or temple president may even hand over some visitor to Bhakta, ‘Yes you preach. He is only nine months but definitely he will handle him.’ Or temple president will say ‘no, no, no let GBC come or some temple sannyasi and then I would like you to come and you could sit down and talk.’ So like that we should be doing how much we can handle, who we are and the party that I have to preach to – what is his status and what is his field of knowledge and what are his arguments and who could defeat them on behalf of Krishna?

This has to be all worked out and then approach, something like that no? You don’t agree with this, so what is your policy? God doesn’t – God is not material. a material God, a non- material God, a spiritual God would not enjoy something that is material. He is disinterested in the matter, that is the external energy and it is there for the conditioned souls to think it to be real and try to enjoy it – not for God.

and Brahmin is eating and then Lord is eating also, you want Lord to eat then feed the Brahmin and Lord is eating at the same time. That kind of enjoyment, transcendental enjoyment the Lord is very much there.

Otherwise Lord could have eaten that food cooked by Duryodhan, he did not because he saw some material flavour, and the smell was all mundane so he did not look at the food. He has made it very clear – patram puspam phalam.. and he has many also – ‘If you want to feed me okay I have already told. When I met arjuna I told him what I like and what I dislike and at the same time it has to be with devotion.’

Devotion is something spiritual we are talking about – it’s not a material thing. and the Lord, he described how the body is compared to a tree and there are two birds on this tree. and there are the supersoul and there is the soul. The soul is trying to enjoy this body through the senses. and as a result the conditioned soul is sometimes enjoying sweet fruits and sometimes bitter ones but the supersoul is just there to witness. He does not want to enjoy any material fruits – good or bad are both material. as soon as you transcend this materiality – good and bad, and come to the transcendental then the Lord is not a witness anymore, he is participant, he will grant things and will enjoy also.

He is waiting for you to stop enjoying material and good or bad, both sides of material thing. So each time the conditioned soul is watching supersoul is only standing there, peaceful, blissful each time as you are going through the bitterness, bitter experiences– nothing changes for the supersoul. He is wanting also to attain a position like that then he remains this way adjusting and begins acting transcendentally.

Damodarlila

Venue: Durban, South Africa

17 07 2017

This is Krsna speaking,

"maiya, chanda khilona laiyo, lauta jau dhartipar teri goda na ayo, maiya" Krsna says, If you do not give Me this toy, I will not sit or lie down in your lap. From now onwards, no. I would prefer to lie down on the floor not in your lap because you are not giving Me that toy."

"surabhi ko pai pana na kariya sira choti na kariyo"

Yasoda, one time told Krsna, "You see Balarama's long hairs? He has a big sikha also." Krsna inquired, "why I do not have?" She said, "Because you did not drink cow's milk. Balarama is drinking lots of cow's milk. You do not drink. If you drink your sikha, your hair, will also grow long." But today, Krsna says, "from today onwards, I will stop drinking the milk of the cow. Now, I will not tie my sikha. Better now give Me that toy." "maiya, chanda khilona laiyo"

Finally, Lord gives the final, kind of ultimatum to Mother Yasoda.

"kaho nanda baba ko tero suta na kahiyo"

He says, "From today onwards, I will tell everybody that I am son of Nanda Maharaj. No, no, I'm not son of Yasoda. I'm only son of Nanda Maharaja. Today, I am going to hire public address system, I will go all over Gokula declaring that I am son of Nanda Maharaja and not son of Yasoda!"

So, this way or that way, He is threatening Yasoda and is demanding, "maiya chanda khilona laiyo" So, like this Krsna spent His childhood days in Gokula. Mostly spent time with Nanda baba, with Yasoda, Rohini, Balarama. But as He grows, He meets His friends, begins playing with them, going door to door. Also, He loves butter like anything. Krsna likes butter and He does not mind stealing, buy, borrow, steal, to eat butter. His goal is to eat butter (laughter). He likes cow, He
likes their butter. This is His service to the cows. As He grows older, He is going to be serving cows by herding in forest of Vrndavana.

Complaints come of the butter stealing. "Hey , Yasoda!" Everyday, some gopis are there, knocking at the door of Yasoda and complaining and warning, "do something!" Yasoda never believe her son would do such things. "He is such a nice boy, such a good boy, He will steal? No, forget it! You prove it. If you catch Him red handed or white handed (laughter) with the butter all over His hands, you bring Him to me. Then, I would believe!"

This is the 10th canto, 9th chapter of the Bhagavatam. It deals with, what we called, yesterday, as Damodara lila. Damodara refers to He is bound with a rope to the mortar, hence, Damodara. It is also called ukhal bandhana, bound to the mortar.

sri-suka uvaca
ekada grha-dasisu
yasoda nanda-gehini
karmantara-niyuktasu
nirmamantha svayam dadhi [SB 10.9.1-2]

So, Sukadeva Gosawami begins the narration. Who is the speaker of Bhagavatam? Sukadeva Goswami. We are hearing from Sukadeva Goswami. What Sukadeva Goswami has written, I'm presenting as much as it is, with the help and blessings of Srila Prabhupada. Sukadeva Goswami begins the narration with ekada, once upon a time, one day. Stories begin like this, right? One day, there was a King and he had a Queen. The King was Rama and the Queen was Sita. And it goes on like that. So, ekada, one day. That day was Divali. This Damodara lila took place on day of Divali, in month of Kartika, also known as month of
Damodara. A vaisnava month called Damodara also.

That day, Yasoda took charge of the churning of the butter. Butter churning, do you have experience any of the ladies here, matajis do butter churning? Butter churning is good for health also (laughter). My mother did this every morning. Every single morning when I would get up, I would hear churning of the butter by my mother. This was, of course, very common part of our culture. Now, that has change with the push of a button, machines.

There is a big difference between butter that is churned by your mother and that of the machine made butter. No feelings. You become machine like, with no feelings and many things are just like that. Life is machines centered, computerised, as we have become soul-less. Every day, some other ladies would do the churning. But that particular day, as mother Yasoda was getting these complaints, Yasoda was thinking, "maybe the quality of the butter churned at my home is not of the best quality. Maybe the best quality is next doors, my neighbours. That is why, maybe, Krsna is going for better quality of butter. So, let me work myself, to butter churning to make the best quality. He will be satisfied and will forget going to other doors for
stealing butter." With that idea in mind also, mother Yasoda was churning the butter. And not churning the butter. We always say work is worship. But it depends what work and how we are performing before you call that a worship. But you see here Yasoda's work and how she is working.

yani yaniha gitani
tad-bala-caritani ca
dadhi-nirmanthane kale
smaranti tany agayata [ SB 10.9.1-2]

She is not only physically churning butter, but the pleasure of her son Krsna. So, that is physical activity but then in the mind she is thinking, smaranati. In fact, before thinking, she is doing gitani caritani gayata. She is singing different pastimes of Krsna. With the mouth she is singing different pastimes of Krsna then, , she is thinking about those pastimes, about her son, Krsna.

So, it is a physical activity, vocal activity, mentally.

kayena mana sa vaca
Kayena, body; manasa, mind; ca, by words. She is busy. This is yoga, samadi, everything.
kayana parasa buddhya kevale indriye rati
yoginah karma kurwanti

Yogis remain busy, karma kurwantu yoginah. Yogis perform activities with their body, mind, intelligence, everything in service of the Lord. That is what Yasoda is doing. Best example for us to get inspired. Example of Yasoda is here.

[Text 3]
ksaumam vasah prthu kati tate
bibrati sutra naddham

Sukadeva Goswami is describing mother Yasoda, meditate upon mother Yasoda while her churning activity. First of all, her clothing. Ksaumam vasah. She is wearing silk. The pujaris also when they perform worship they put silk clothing. Silk is considered pure. Prthu kati kate. prtu means big, she is a well built lady. Sutra naddham, and she has a belt around her waist. She's on duty, belt is on.

Sometimes, when police is not on duty, their belt is hanging loose. But as soon as they hear "attention!" Or, whatever the officer says, immediately, they tie their belts together, ready, fully focused. Otherwise, loose or spaced out, or all over. Belt means yes, you are now ready for action. So, Yasoda is like that, sutrana dham, fully commited and fully focused on her duties.

putra sneha snuta kuca yugam
jata-kampam ca subhruh

Because of her affection for her son, Krsna – that is why Yasoda is ca maha bhaga. It is very natural one think of her children and here, she is thinking of her child and her child is Krsna. She is singing and thinking and her affection gets aroused. As a result, from her breasts, milk is flowing, just by thinking. As a cow thinks of her calves, her milk begins flowing. Sukadeva Goswami is making the observation that milk is oozing, flowing from her breasts as she is churning the butter and as she is absorbed in thinking of the Lord. She has beautiful eyebrows.

rajjv-akarsh-srama-bhuja calat-kankana kundale ca

And there is a lot of srama, lot of labour involved in this churning activity. And her bangles are moving and sounding. And the earnings are moving.

svinnam vaktram kabara

There is perspiration in her face because of the srama, the labour that she is undergoing.

vigalan-malati nirmamantha

Some of the flowers from her hair are dropping down as she is busy with this churning service. And as this was going on for some time, Krsna comes.

[Text 4]
tam stanya kama asadya mathnantim jananim harih

Krsna comes in the scene. This morning, uthi uthi gopala, that did not happen. Yasoda did not wake Him up. She got up and she is busy with her household duties and churning butter. Krsna got up on His own, mother is not around and He is looking for her. And what is on His mind is, stanya kama. He is looking for mother, why? He is hungry, stanya kama, so He could drink the
breasts milk of Yasoda.

He is supposed to be atmakama or atmarama. Lord is self – satisfied but here, He does not seem satisfied, He is unsatisfied. He is hungry, He needs milk, He wants His mother. He has to depends on His mother for His satisfaction. Harih, Sri Krsna, Bala Krsna, He noticed that janani is busy, "my mother is busy with butter churning."

grhitva dadhi-mantanam nyasedhat pritim avahan

Krsna was not at all happy with this. She was thinking, "oh, work is worship. I am doing my duty and I am okay." But this was not okay with Krsna, "this is your duties, this households, this is your secondary duty. But what about me? Are you not thinking of me? This is time to feed me! You forgot me and you are busy with your household duties. What is this? Am I not a priority for you? I am somewhere at the bottom of the list." No, devotees keep Krsna at the top of the list. So, He wanted all this business to stop. How to stop as mother was not going to listen to Him. So, He moved forward and grabbed the churning rod and everything stopped. Pritim avahan, by seeing this mother Yasoda was pleased. She was thinking, "what an intelligent boy! He is not only growing in age and body, but His intelligence is also growing."
"He came on the scene took the stop of the situation. He wanted to stop me and he took decision on His own how to stop me and He was able to stop me by grabbing the churning rod." Thinking so, she started smiling. She was very happy, "good boy, good boy." Next thing is,

[Text 5]

Krsna, immediately as the churning stopped, He jumped on her lap and mother helped, knowing that He was hungry and it was time for milk. She sat down and she was feeding the breasts milk. She was also feasting her eyes on the beautiful face of His son. She is not just sitting there but also thinking of the face of her son and she is pleased and smiling, watching how He is drinking and the His beautiful face.

While that went on for only sometime, and Krsna was not fully satisfied, yet, His belly was not full. Then, mother Yasoda, in the middle, dropped her son and ran back into the kitchen. Because she was hearing the sound of milk over flowing. She had to pay attention to so many affairs. Knowing that milk is over boiling and spilling, she dropped Krsna and ran into the
kitchen.

Now, the story of the milk. The milk was thinking, cow milk was hoping to render service to Krsna by feeding Himself to Krsna. But when milk realised that "Krsna is feeding His belly with all mother's milk, He is not going to drink me today." That milk in the pot was thinking, "Oh, my life is going to be just useless. It is not worth existing, worth living. I will give up my life!" Thinking so, milk was over flowing and jumping into the fire of the stove. Milk was committing suicide there.

Everyone wants to serve Krsna in Vrndavana. Everything is living in Vrndavana, Krsna centered. Perfection is in serving Krsna, pleasing Krsna. The milk pot was too hot so, mother lifted the pot and placed on the side and ran back. But there was a different scene when she got back. What was the scene like?

[Text 6]
sanjata-kopah sphuritarunadharam sandasya dadbhira dadhi-mantanam-bhajanam

bhittva mrsasrur drsad asmana raho
jaghasa haiyangavam antaram gatah

When mother Yasoda left Krsna in the middle of His breakfast and ran to the kitchen, Krsna did not like this and He became very angry. He was so angry that His lips were trembling. Aruna dharam, Krsna's lips are pinkish in colour. Seven parts of Krsna's body are pinkish in colour, including the lips. I think some ladies have found out that Krsna lips are pinkish (laughter). Krsna's nails also are pinkish. So, that news also have spread around, some imitation goes on (laughter). But Krsna does not need any lipsticks.

His pinkish lips are just trembling out of anger. When you are angry you press with your teeth your lips. Krsna held His lower lip with the teeth to express His intense anger. When you are angry you end up doing something not desirable. So, Krsna picked up a rock and threw at the big pot of the butter milk. Mother Yasoda was working hard all this morning, churning butter.

Krsna broke it and, soon, the butter milk was all over.

Immediately, "ah, mother Yasoda is going to come here soon and going to get me." So, He wants to get some tears ready so that He would be forgiven for His act. He was still hungry, so, He enters another room and climbs up a mortar and reaches the pot of butter which was hanging from the ceiling. You could imagine, right?

These days you do not do it, but we have seen it in our country (India), in our village, from we were born. For safe keeping, they keep different products, milk products, yoghurt, some other things hanging from the ceilings, with ropes. So, Krsna was reaching that out and feeding Himself some butter.

Yasoda is back in that room where she was churning butter earlier and

[Text 7]
bhagnam vilokya sva sutasya karma taj

When she saw that broken pot and butter milk and butter all over, she immediately concluded, "this must be act of Krsna! It must be Him." Especially, as she noticed that He was not in the room, it was beyond her doubts that for sure He did it.

jahasa tam capi na tatra pasyati

Now, she is looking for this naughty boy, Krsna. "Where is He?" She was to get Him, beat Him. She is looking for Him everywhere. Finally, she notices, "In that room oh, He is there." By this time Krsna, His belly was full. Then He was thinking of doing some charities. Charity begins at home (laughter). Now that His belly was full, He was thinking of others. Who are the others? Some monkeys. He starts feeding monkeys the additional butter.

These monkeys were of great help to the Lord when He fought that battle with Rama, Hanuman and company, was that big army battling. But He was not able to render much service to these monkeys army. So He thought, "let me be grateful. I am going to do something in return. Please, have some butter, monkeys." With that thought in His mind, He is thanking them and feeding them. While Krsna is busy with all this,

[Text 8]

He knows what He is doing is not proper. Not only He had broken the butter but He was stealthily eating butter and distributing that, now, to the monkeys. He knew mother Yasoda could come and find this out. So, He was looking here, there, all sides and checking whether she is noticing.

niriksa pascat sutam agamac chanaih

Yasoda came from behind and Krsna quickly noticed that mother was approaching. Cautiously, she was coming, not letting Him know that she was coming. He did find out that she was getting there and He also saw that she has a stick in her hand.

[Text 9]

Quickly, she is coming with a stick in her hand. Krsna quickly jumped down and fled. He was scared, so He ran. Yogis perform austerities and they go in meditation.

tana vastita tada gatena manasa pasyanti yam yoginah

They try to capture the Lord in the heart, lots of meditation for long, long time. They may or may not have access to the Lord. So, that Lord mother Yasoda is trying to catch. Yogis do not always become successful. After long endeavour they become successful. That Lord Yasoda is running after and trying to catch Him.

Yasoda is a little elderly and well built with her big hips and breasts and thin waist. Krsna was quickly running and she had hard time catching up with Him. She was slowing down with Her heavy weight. In the course of time, her hair have become loosen, her flowers are dropping in the back. But she did not give up. She kept trying. She thought she was very close, very close and then she would slow down and He would run faster. But she would not lose enthusiasm, determination, patience. She was following all this. Finally, she managed capturing Krsna. It was not good news for Krsna (laughter).

[Text 11]
krtagasam tam parudantam aksini

Because Krsna was thinking, "I am offender, I have done so many things wrong this morning!" He is caught hold by mother Yasoda. She has a stick in her hand and Krsna is in tears. With His both little lotus hands, He is rubbing His lotus eyes.

As a result, the tears mixed with the kajal, anjan, the blackish ointment, now, His whole face is
black as He is smearing that.

Yasoda, after some time, she threw away the stick that was in her hand because He was too much afraid. She wanted to minimise His scare and give some relief. Now she thinks she should punish Him by tying Him to something so that she peacefully could do some of her remaining household morning duties.

[Text 13-14]
nacantar na bahir yasya

He has no inside, no outside, no beginning, no end. He is unlimited. That kind of Person she has intention of tying Him. She is thinking He is just her little son whom she could tie. She wants to tie Him to a mortar. She wants to punish not only Krsna but also the mortar. Mortar is also punishable. Mortar helped Krsna climbing up. He was standing on that mortar so, it was teaming up with Krsna. It also should be punished. She was to punish Krsna and mortar by tying both of them together. Lucky mortar, right? (Laughter).

[Text15]

So, she was tying. She managed to get a rope and she was tying. But what was her experience? It was too short. How much? Two fingers short. So said, "I can get another rope." She got an another one and tied to the earlier one to make it longer and tried to tie Krsna. Again, the rope was two fingers short. She got more ropes and more ropes. Everytime she tied
the additional rope to the earlier rope, it was shorter again, two fingers short.

[Text 16]

Neighbouring ladies were all watching the scene. Yasoda was running all over. She went to goshala and brought some ropes from cows. All the cows are running free (laughter) because all the ropes are being used to tie Krsna. The ladies, "finally! We have been complaining! Now you realise! He stole butter at your own home, now you know. You did not believe us but today
He stole butter at your own home, your own butter, didn't He steal? Yes, He stole! He should be punished!" They are getting kind of happy. Finally, He was getting punishment so, they were enjoying.

[Text 18]

But Krsna saw that Yasoda was making so much endeavour, she was not going to stop. "She is not going to give up. Her goal is to tie me up, and she is going to do it." Finally, He allowed, "Okay, if you are so much determined, go ahead and tie me." Then she was finally able to tie Sri Krsna.

That two fingers short was that her endeavour was not sufficient. She had to endeavour more and more when it was to Lord's satisfaction and Lord pleased. So, from both side. God helps those who help themselves. So, God finally helped. Krsna finally helped Yasoda as she was helping herself, endeavouring to tie Krsna. That task was completed by tying Krsna to the mortar.

This is not in Bhagavatam, but we find from other sources, that day Balarama, when that pastime took place, He was not at home. But then He returned to see Krsna in that very awkward position, tied to the mortar, not being able to move. He has never seen His younger brother Krsna in helpless condition like that. When powerful Balarama, elder brother Balarama
returned and when He saw this, He was furious. He said, "who has done this?!"

"What has He done wrong that someone has tied my brother Krsna to the mortar? Who could dare to do this?"

He has become an advocate of Krsna and wants to release Him so, He is giving all these arguments. "Who is doing this? He is just five years old! Maybe someone is thinking that He is teasing those gopis. Come on, He is only five years old! He is not going to tease gopis and do this and that. No!"

(Laughter). "And such Krsna, someone has tied my brother!" mama ko ave tarasa mat ya ko mata maro ri He says, "I feel bad seeing my brother in condition like this." He is kind of doubting, "most probably, this is a job of Yasoda." And Balarama says, bare yugan se nanda baba ne yako palo ri "Nanda Maharaja has to take so much trouble, anxiety and endeavour to make maintain, look after, protect this child! Look what mother Yasoda is doing! Nanda Maharaja, on one side, cares and concerns, protects, and so much. And someone else is tying and beating and punishing
Him like this. Is this fair?" And finally, He says, Krsna kanhaya chotha bhaiya mero bhoro bharo ri "This Krsna Kanhaya is small little brother of mine. Bhoro bharo, such an innocent brother. Who is accusing Him for this and that? Why He has been tied like this?!"

This is a prayer Rupa Goswami Prabhupada. He is praying to the Lord. He is very anxious to have darshan of Krsna as son of Nanda. Kada raksami, "when will I be able to see nandasya balakam, nanda balaka, the darling of Nanda and Yasoda." Nipam malakam, he says, "oh that baby Krsna with a garland of kadamba flowers around His neck, oh that Krsna, when will I be able to see Him? Lasata tilakam balakam, and that Krsna has tilaka on His forehead. He looks so beautiful with a tilaka. That balaka is also palaka, He is also protector. All His devotees are protected by Him."

kasturi tilakam lalata pathale
"When will I be able to see Him?" The Lord with kasturi tilakam. Lalata pathale, Lord Krsna has a broad forehead. He has a broad shoulders and broad forehead. These are some of the special features of His personality. He has a raised nose. The standard of beauty is Krsna. There are 32 different features described in different sastras and also in Bhakti Rasamrta
Sindhi.

32 features of Krsna's form. There you will find this list. Seven parts of His body are reddish or, as we said, pinkish. Seven parts of His body are lotus like: lotus face, lotus feet, lotus navel, lotus hands. His hands are like a lotus. They not only look beautiful like a lotus but they are also very tender like lotus. The palms of Krsna's are also pinkish in colour, like lotus. You may ask, "oh, Krsna hands are tender and pinkish like lotus. Then, are they fragrant also
like lotus?" Yes, they are. You could smell Krsna's body or hands. They have sweet or madhuram fragrant like lotus. In fact, all the fragrance of this existence, including that of lotus come from Him. Krsna's body is fragrant, naturally fragrant. There are no need of powders, cosmetics to freshen His body.

If Krsna spends some time in some place and when He walks away, goes away He leaves the fragrance behind. Whether Krsna was or wasn't in such and such place and you want to find out, you go there and what you do? You breathe in and there is the fragrance. "Oh, sweet smelling place. Where is that sweet smell coming from? For sure Krsna was here some time
ago. He has left His fragrance behind."

kasturi tilakam lalata pathake vaksastale kaustubham

He has kasturi tilaka. Where do we find kasturi? The mrig, the dear, the must. He wears kaustubha mani, special jewel, only one in existence, around His neck. When they did the churning of the ocean, they found different items. One of them was this kaustubha Mani. "Who should get this kaustubha Mani?" The assembly was deciding. "Oh, that should goes to Visnu, Krsna!" Then Krsna is wearing that kaustubha mani.

nasa agreha vara motikam

nasa agreha, nasa, nasika or the nose and there is one one diamond on middle of His nose. It is sometimes photographed like this. Motikam, special pearl that Krsna wears.

karatale venuma

He holds flute in His hands.

karecha kanganam

And he has bangles around His wrists. Krsna like all these ornaments. Visnu, Krsna, they love these ornaments.

Surya, sun like the namaskar. Surya namaskar. Ganesha likes laddoos. Shiva likes water. Visnu likes alankara, these abhushana, or these ornaments. This is statement like that. He puts on lots of ornaments.

sarvange harih candanam su lalitham

All over His body, there is candana. Yasoda puts lots of candana on Lord's body because He has to go all day, herding the cows in the sun, so, to have a cooling effect on His body. In summer there is also candana yatra, a special festival for  21 days. For 21 days, everyday, the body of the deities are smeared with candana.

kanthe ca muktavali

He has a full necklace. In the pearls necklace that He wears, is like swans. Because the body of Krsna is bluish in colour, it is like a sky and then swans are flying. And He has His peacock which is like a rainbow.

barhapirama nathavaravabu karanayog karnikaram

The beautiful Krsna's feet, madhuradhipater akhilam madhuram talking something related to that. The sweetness of the Lord, the beauty of the Lord. Sukadeva Goswami describes the Lord in Bhagavatam as barhapiram nathvara. Lord is a nathavaravapu. Lord is a nathavara, is an actor. The best of actors, king of all actors. He dresses like, also, actors, meticulously He dresses.

The sastras describes Lord's dressing "as meticulously He dresses," as if someone is going to take photograph of Him. Somebody is going to do video filming of Him. He is dressed like that all the time, meticulously dresses.

Nathavaravapu. His body and dress is like an actor. Barhapirama, He has a turban with lotus and peacock feather. Karanayo karnikaram, in His ears, Sukadeva Goswami describes that there is one flower that he puts in two ears, He wears in two ears. Flower is one, ears are how many? Two ears, flower one.

How could He wear one flower in two ears? Do you have some ideas? You have to be smart, South Africans here (laughter). He says (an American devotee), "break the flower into two." American idea (laughter). I think he said something else too. Oh okay, "flower sometimes here (right ear) same flower after sometimes, here (left ear)". That is what Krsna does! Karanayo, two ears. Karnikaram, one kind of a yellow flower. Same flower sometimes in this ear, sometimes in the other ear.

vipravasa kanaka kapisam

He has yellow garments that dazzles, that shines like a lightening.

vaijayanti ca makam

He wears a garland and that has a name. One kind of garland is called vaijayanti mala. Have you heard? Or, you have heard the name of one actress, her name was Vaijayanti Mala (laughter). Mala means garland. When garlands have five different kinds of flowers with five different colours, which those five colours are mentioned, that kind of combination in a garland then that garland is called vaijayanti mala. Sukadeva Goswami says that He is wearing that kind of garland.

venorandhan adharasudhaya pudayan gopa vrndaya

Now, Lord is with his friends. Lots of time He spends with His friends. He is playing His flute, venorandhan. The nectar from His lower lips, He fills in the flute. As He plays His flute, He sprinkles all over, it reaches all Vraja Mandala. The gopis are hearing the flute playing of Krsna.

That venunaga, the sweet.

vrndavanam prahisata gopakirtihi

Krsna enters Vrndavana while playing His flute, surrounded by His friends. What are the friends doing? Gopakirtinhi, they are all chanting glories of Krsna, some talk about about Krsna. All the residents of Vrndavana are known for what? Their talks about Krsna. If there has to be some subject matter to talk about, then you could talk. Unless you are have heard, unless you have read or realised, how could you talk?

But there are so much to talk about Krsna, unlimited talk. Some may be saying, "oh, He is undescribable!" He cannot be described. Mayavadis may be talking impersonalist. They do not appreciate the lila, pastimes, the form, abode of the Lord.
Ananta Sesa is always talking. Ananta Sesa has one thousand mouths. With one thousand mouths, he is chanting the glories of the Lord. And not that all the mouths are talking about the same thing, no. Each mouth is talking about one topic. There are thousands hearing near that mouth. Then you go next door to another mouth and there is another topic and there is a large
crowd to hear. Then another mouth, another topic, and crowd. He is talking and talking since the beginning of creations and he has not seen the end of the topics and he has not repeated the same topic twice. So much to talk about or hear about.

So, basically first, when there is the hearing then comes talking. How many mouth we have? One. And ears? Two. So, we should be talking more or hearing more? Hearing more because there are two ears and should be talking less. But normally, what do we do? We talk more, hear less or do not hear. We think we are all the ideas of the world. We are independently thoughtful
and complete. In this way, we have locked the source of knowledge. We are deprived and stay in full ignorance and we think that ignorance is bliss.

So we should be hearing, fill in our ears with all this topics, fill our existence with this topics. Purify our ears. Who is here for first time, have not come to festival or temple before? So, you are around and connected for sometime. You have been hearing and now you are hearing more, marathon hearing. Now, you could talk about Krsna. This is perfection.

Do you like to talk? Yes? How many of you like to talk about Krsna? Some are thinking (laughter). No, I am not giving you microphone. But you could talk to someone next to you. We can give you 2 minutes to talk. He talks for one minute, you finish his talk, wined it up. Speak something that you have been hearing. Yes? We could do this for a couple of minutes. So, select your partner, you tell him you want to talk for a couple of minutes about Krsna. Then both of you talk. One talks, the other hears. Okay, go ahead. We want everyone to talk and hear.

One person talking, other one hearing. Not laughing, talking. Talk of something that you have heard that you like. By pairs, two together. I want to see two person facing each other and talking.

(Devotees talking in pairs about Krsna)
Nitai Gaura Premanande, Hari Hari Bol!

Did you talk and hear? Did you like it? Yes? Did you like that program? So, carry on. You got to talking about Krsna. You are going to hear some more topics to talk about.

Lord Krsna, one time, is with mother Yasoda and He is expressing His special liking for butter. He says,

"maiya re, mohe makhana bhavei"
"I love butter, oh mother!"
"jo meva pakawana kehti tu mohe nahi ruci avei"

"You are feeding me pakawana, chappan bhoga, 56 offerings but you know, what I really like is butter more than anything else."

"Braja yuvati ekapiche pache thari sunnata shyama ki baat"
As bala Krsna was talking to Yasoda in Gokhool, Nanda Bhavan, there was another gopi. She was behind Nanda Bhavan, near the window and she was hearing this statement and appeal of Krsna, "I like butter, you should just only feed me butter. Forget all this cooking and just give me butter." She was all hearing about what Krsna has to say.

"mana mana kehti kabahu apane ghara dikho makhana khai"

In mind she was thinking, "oh, You are making so many appeals to Your mother! You see, she is not giving You enough butter. Why don't You come to my home? I will feed You lots of butter, please come. Be guest of honour at my home and eat as much butter as to Your heart content." "bhaitega hi mathani maiy kaba raho chappani" "You come and as I take note of Your arrival, I will just hide somewhere. Then You will think that owner of this house, owner of this butter is not around and then You eat butter. I will make Your job easy."

"suradasa prabhu antarayami"

This is compilation of great devotee Suradasa and he says that prabhu is antarayami. So, what this gopi was thinking outside there, behind the house as she was hearing and as she was thinking, Lord immediately took note of what she was thinking. Because He is antarayami, He is Lord of the heart, He knows what is on our mind and He is sarva abhigya svaratha. He is
knower. As she was thinking, Lord took note as He is antarayami Krsna.

gvalini ki mana ki jani

He took note of what she was thinking and, in due course of time, Lord did go to that gvalini, gopi's home and stole and ate lots of butter.

Krsna is known as makhana chora. God is very famous or infamous (laughter). The thief is not very famous. One of His titles is makahana chora or the butter thief. But is He the thief? Or, we are the thieves? Everything belongs to Him. Butter at His home is His and butter at other homes, who's property is it? It is His property.

It is His property but if you claim it, then you are a trespasser. You should be persecuted. And that happens, in fact. This is what is happening. We are getting punished. It is Lord's property but we are claiming that as our property and we are enjoying, exploiting.

In the words of Srila Prabhupada, he says, "we like kingdom of God without God." "Why do I need God for? I am God. Iswaro aham, I am iswara, I am the enjoyer," that is the spirit, unfortunately.

Although they call him butter thief but, in fact, they pray, "may Lord come and steal butter at our home." This is their prayer. They are waiting, "when is He going to come? He looted butter at this home other day, and that was yesterday and there also last month. And He has left us! He is not stealing butter at our place. How unfortunate we are!" This is how they are thinking. They think, "when Lord comes and stealing, eating butter at other homes, how fortunate they are!" So, gopis in Vrndavana, there is a big competition. Which gopi gets up first and does the
churning of the butter and keeps butter ready. Because they think, "what if Krsna comes and the butter is not ready? Then, naturally, He'll go next door. So, I will have butter ready. Whenever He comes butter should be ready."

So, there is a big competition of getting up early. It is a good reason of getting up early, right? (Laughter). Early to bed then early to rise. That would make someone healthy, wealthy and wise.

So, gopis are getting up early morning and churning butter and keeping it ready so that Krsna would come and steal butter. But then they, outwardly, are making this complain, "oh Yasoda, stop Him stealing butter. Why don't you feed Him your own butter? You are not looking after your child! Your butter is not good! Do something! Stop this!" They are complaining like this. Yasoda keep saying, "no, no, no, my boy is such a nice boy. He would never steal. Catch Him,
prove it!" And all the gopis are endearing also to catch hold of Krsna. They made so many attempts but every time their attempts fail.

One time, one gopi was very successful. Her name was Prabhavati. She managed to catch hold of Krsna right in the middle of His act of stealing butter and she was very jubilant, thinking, "I have become successful, victorious!"

She was dragging Krsna towards Nanda  Bhavan. She was dragging Him in through this lane to that street all the way to Nanda Bhavan, telling everybody, "yes! See, I have caught hold of Krsna!" Everybody was surprised how this lady managed to catch Him and they were all happy, "yes, finally, He is going to be punished!"

So, she comes to Nanda Bhavan. She was screaming from a distance and letting Yasoda know, "yes, yes. Look! Look! Yasoda, come out and see! I have caught hold of your son stealing butter!"

This lady, as in Vrndavana, she had her head and half face covered by her scarf. She has held Krsna with one hand and dragging Him. The other hand was holding the scarf covering her head to prevent it from falling and she was calling out for Yasoda.

Finally, Yasoda comes. Prabhavati presenting Krsna to Yasoda, "just see. Here is your child. I caught Him white handed with the butter."

Then Yasoda says, "you fool! That is not Krsna, that is your son!" (Laughter). As she looks she was surprised. That was really her son. Now you could imagine, she must have really covered her face fully. How could she show her face. While coming to Nanda Bhavan she was thinking, "oh, my name is going to be in the front page of Mathura Times!" (Laughter).

Now she is thinking, "I better cover my face otherwise cameraman may take my photographs, foolish lady." So, as she was, with big embarrassment, going towards her home, Krsna was waiting for her (laughter). He said, "hey Prabhavati come here. So, this is last time, okay? If you make another attempt and catch Me and try to present Me to Yasoda, today I turned into your son, next time I'll maybe turn into your husband!" (Laughter). So, that news spread. Then, they were not daring to catch Him (laughter). He is unpredictable, he could do anything.

So, His attempts of stealing butter and pleasing residents of Vrndavana, pleasing His friends and monkeys and cows, He is serving that way goes on and it is going on to this day. Devotees take pleasure in hearing these pastimes and cherish this and preserve as a big treasure. It makes the souls happy more than anything else. Any wealth of this world would not make the
soul happy.

You just sit, you do so much run around and still do not become happy. For a change you could just sit down and chant,

hare krsna hare Krsna Krsna Krsna hare hare hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare And be happy. Or sit down and hear Bhagavatam, hear Krsna katha, Caitanya katha, Rama's pastimes, hear Bhagavad Gita, read, share with others, talk to you family members about Krsna, remind them of Krsna and Krsna's instructions, remind your neighbours, friends and
countrymen. Increase this Krsna katha in the whole world for it to be peaceful, prosperous; it would flourish not perish as it is happening.

Man of character would be born out of such sessions as they hear about Krsna. Caring, concerned citizens, knowledgeable, pure hearted, friendly, equipped with all good qualities. Government should promote this program, push on Krsna consciousness movement, facilitate Krsna consciousness movement. It will be a big  transformation. Otherwise, is there any hope?
Crime is rising and everything.

I was here last year and this year. Has this country made progress? Has crime rates gone down? No, it is on rise. What means do you have to minimise it? Unless there is a goodness within. Krsna consciousness is meant to revive the good qualities in all souls, in all people, of whole world. So, go on pushing, spreading this Krsna consciousness movement far and wide,
for the benefit of humanity at large.

Damodarastakam Prayer

 (1)
namamisvaram sac-cid-ananda-rupam
lasat-kundalam gokule bhrajamanam
yasoda-bhiyolukhalad dhavamanam
paramrstam atyantato drutya gopya

To that iswara, I offer my obeissances who is sac cid ananda rupam, whose rupa is sac cid ananda.

lasat kundalam, and He has kundalam, earrings dazzling, shining. Yasoda bhiyolukham, out of fear of Yasoda, He has jumped down from that mortar and is running, Yasoda is running after Him to catch hold of Him.

(2)
rudantam muhur netra-yugmam mrjantam
karambhoja-yugmena satanka-netram
muhuh svasa-kampa-trirekhanka-kantha-
sthita-graivam damodaram bhakti-baddham

Rudantam muhur netram yugmam mrjantam, same description of Bhagavatam we find here. They do not consider Him Lord. We are calling Him Lord, Lord. For them, in vatsalya bhava, the parenthood, as those residents of Vrndavana, especially, Nanda and Yasoda, they take the position of parents. They are parents and that is their son. So, they have right to beat, teach
Him lessons. So, at that time He is crying and rubbing His eye.

Muhu svasa kampa, He is breathing very heavily as He is crying. As a result, khanka kantha, on the Lord's neck there are three lines. Sthita graivam damodaram bhakti baddham, He is bound by love of Yasoda.

(3)
itidrk sva-lilabhir ananda-kunde
sva-ghosam nimajjantam akhyapayantam
tadiyesita-jnesu bhaktair jitatvam
punah prematas tam satavrtti vande

These kind of lilas – the residents of Vrndavana are drowned in lila like this. Kundas, like a lake, are filled with these ananda kunda. What is the cause of ananda is these lila. Everybody is floating, jumping, diving into that ananda.

Unto this Lord, sattavriti vande, I offer my obeissances again and again.

This Lord is bhaktair jitatvam, He is conquered by bhakti. The bhaktas are conquering the Lord just by their devotion for Him.

aham bhaktana paradhinu, Lord says, "I am not independent, I am paradhina, I am dependent, I am controlled by my devotees.

(4)
varam deva moksam na moksavadhim va
na canyam vrne ‘ham varesad apiha
idam te vapur natha gopala-balam
sada me manasy avirastam kim anyaih

My Lord, varam deva, I do not want this benediction of moksa. No, no, I do not care for moksa or any other kind of benediction.

Just one thing, idam te vapur natha gopala balam, your form as bala Gopala,  sada me manasy, all the time let this be on my mind. Kim manyaih, what else do I need? What else do I care for?

(5)
idam te mukhambhojam atyanta-nilair
vrtam kuntalaih snigdha-raktais’ ca gopya
muhus cumbitam bimba-raktadharam me
manasy avirastam alam laksa-labhaih

Idam te mukhambhojam, His devotee is praying, "oh that beautiful face of the Lord, with curly hair and hence, seeing the beauty of His face,

Muhus cumbitam bimba raktadharam me,

As sometimes Yasoda kisses her child, as a result the child's face, Gopala balak's face becomes reddish. She leaves some signs and He looks beautiful and that I would like to contemplate on that beautiful face for those signs of kisses from His mother.

Alam laksa labhaih, this is all that I need. There are kinds of millions of benedictions I do not care for.

(6)
namo deva damodarananta visno
prasida prabho duhkha-jalabdhi-magnam
krpa-drsti-vrstyati-dinam batanu-
grhanesa mam ajnam edhy aksi-drsyah

Oh damodara, You are ananta, unlimited Visnu. Be kind to me. I am just drowning in this jala abdhi, dukh sagar. It is the ocean of miseries and suffering. Get me out if here. Krpa drsti vrsatydi, let Your merciful glances fall upon me.

(7)
kuveratmajau baddha-murtyaiva yadvat
tvaya mocitau bhakti-bhajau krtau ca
tatha prema-bhaktim svakam me prayaccha
na mokse graho me ‘sti damodareha

Kuveratmajau, the way You liberated those, two sons of Kuvera, Manigriva and Nalakuvera, Tomorrow, we will be talking how Lord He is just bound here, right? Now, he wants to do something more naughtier. So, more lila's are going to be unfolding. As you keep coming, you will have next scene presented.

Lord crawling out  two huge trees, he pulled and they fell down and two personalities emerged. They were there in the form of tree, and they offer obeissances. So those details of that will be presented to morrow and what follows. The uprooting of the trees and cause of havoc in Vraja Gokula. And they had a big assembly, istha gosthis of Gokula vasis.

Then they took a resolution, they have to leave this place and in all unanimous and how they prepared to leave Gokula, how they crossed Yamuna, how they arrived in Vrndavana. This is all the subject matter of tomorrow's presentation regarding Krsna's childhood pastimes. So many details we are leaving because of time constraints.

Continuing with the Damodarastaka.
The way you liberated sons of kubera,

Tvaya maucitau bhakti, and You gave them lots of bhakti and devotional service. Tatha prema bhaktim,  just like You did to them, tatha, likewise, do that to me also. Na moksa grha, I want to remind You oh Lord, I do not want moksa, I do not want liberation. I want Your bhakti, I want eternal devotional service at your lotus feet.

namas te ‘stu damne sphurad-dipti-dhamne
tvadiyodarayatha visvasya dhamne
namo radhikayai tvadiya-priyayai
namo ‘nanta-lilaya devaya tubhyam

Finally, namaste, please accept my obeisances unto damne. I offer my obeisances to that rope that was binding Krsna and the mortar.

Sphurad dipti damne, that brilliant rope.

Tvadiyo, and I also offer my obeisancs unto Your belly that was bound.

That was visvasya damne, now it is being revealed to us that why it was difficult for Yasoda to bind Krsna. She was thinking, "long rope and His waist is round like that. So, if I get 9 inch rope, one foot, that should be good enough."

But here we are informed that udhara, that belly of the Lord is visvasya damne. It is abode of whole entier visva, entire bramhana is in it. So, long rope is required? That goes around bramahana, around the universe then He could be tied. Mother Yasoda also was short and that is an another pastime we will uncover.

"Oh, yes, He has eaten dirt!" They complained. Balarama also was part in that complaint. "No, no,I did not eat. I have not eaten!" Mother Yasoda comes again with a stick asking what is going on. Krsna says, "if you think or you really believe In Balarama, what are you afraid of looking into my mouth?" Then Krsna opened His mouth and Yasoda was looking right into the mouth. When she saw within the mouth of the Lord, what was there? The whole bramhana was there.

"Oh, you are complaining about me eating a little dirt, but you could see his much dirt is in there (laughter). Whole world which is made up of earth, water, fire, ether, is all there, why you should be complaining me eating a little pinch of dirt? No big deal."

As mother was seeing inside she saw the whole universe, so many planets. The she saw, "oh, there is earth there! Oh look! New Delhi there (laughter). So, let me follow. High way going to Agra. There is a Vraja mandala. Yamuna is flowing and there is Gokula. And in the courtyard on the banks of Yamuna, oh, I'm there! Inside the mouth!" And she is seeing Krsna with His mouth opened inside there also. Baby Krsna with opened mouth, Yasoda is there, same the scenes.

Visvasya damne, You are abode of the whole universe.

Namo radhikayai tva diya priyayai I offer my obeisances unto Radhika.
Tvadiya priyayai, She is very dear to You.

Namo nanta lilaya devaya tubhyam. My unlimited obeisances into You, oh Damodara deva. You performed unlimited lila's, my obeisances unto You, Lord Damodara.

Damodara Lila ki, jai!

Nanda ke ananda bhayo Bhagavat Katha, Part 4

Nanda ke ananda bhayo
Bhagavat Katha , Part 4
11 07 2017

Venue: Durban_South Africa
Vrindavan Dham ki Jai
Gokul Dham ki Jai.

So two scenes, Krsna’s appearance, He appeared in the middle of the night, 12 midnight and Vasudev brought the child back, baby daughter of Yashoda, he brought her to Mathura. So what more events took place in Mathura. The next day as well events in Gokul, so these are two episodes. The aspects of Krsna’s pastimes will be dealing with today.

devakyah sayane nyasya
vasudevo tha darikam
pratimucya pador loham
aste purvavad avrtah (SB 10.3.52)

So Vasudev was back in the prison house, he placed the daughter next to Devaki and the shackles around his wrist and ankles are placed as before. Yesterday we did watch the drama, some of that scene is here in the Bhagavatam, that will be dealing with

tato bala dhvanim srutva
grha palah samutthitah (S.B. 10.4.1)

So when, Vasudev was in imprisoned state, bound by the shackles, immediately everybody is getting up, Yoga maya’s influence was there, fast asleep, but now they are woken up and first thing they hear is “bal dhavani” child is crying.

te tu turnam upavrajya
devakya gaarbha janma tat (SB 10.4.2)

They got up and the guards they all ran “bhoja rajaya” to report to Bhoja Raja, that is Kamsa.

yad udvignah pratiksate (SB 10.4.2)

And he was awaiting, anxiously waiting to get, hear such news.

sa talpat turnam utthaya (SB 10.4.3)

And he jumped, when he heard that baby has taken birth, and we just heard the crying, Kamsa jumped says

mukti murdhajah (SB 10.4.3)

Hairs were all scattered and he ran, rushed to Vasudeva and Devaki

tam aha bhrataram devi
krpana karunam sati (SB 10.4.4)

So, Devaki made all kinds of appeal, please spare the child, please spare, she is “striyam”, she is just daughter of mine.

hantum arhasi, ma hantum arhasi (SB 10.4.4)

You already have killed so many children, please at least save this one,

sunseyam tava kalyana ( SB 10.4.4)

She may become your daughter in law, when she grows up, she is trying to establish some kind of relationship like that.

bahavo himsita bhratah
sisavah pavokopamah ( SB 10.4.5)

My brilliant children you have killed, but you spare this one.

putrikaika pradiyatam ( SB 10.4.5)

Please give this daughter as a gift to me but nothing, everything is falling on the deaf ears of Kamsa. All he thinks of yes, oh this is the eighth child and I was waiting for eight years. Devaki was giving birth to one child every year, next year, next child, he had been waiting finally the 8 th child took birth.

rudatya dina dinavat (SB 10.4.7)

She was caring, Devaki but Kamsa was powerful also, he just snatched the baby,

tam grhitva( SB 10.4.8)

And he held the feet of the baby and he is about to dash, the baby was not there,

devy ambaram gata (SB 10.4.9)

Devi, another devi appeared, the baby turned into a devi, Durga devi.

sayudhaste mahabhuja (SB 10.4.9)

She had eight arms, holding eight different symbols in those hands.

siddha carana gandharvair
apsarah kinnaroragaih upahrtoru ( SB. 10.4. 10-11)

Siddhas, Caranas and Gandharvas, they started praising Durga Devi, they started showering flowers and played music for here pleasure.

kim maya hataya manda (SB 10.4.12)

And she spoke boldly, you manda, you dull headed kamsa, kim maya hataya manda, what will you gain by killing me,

tavanta-krt (SB 10.4.12)

Your killer, yatra kava va purva satrur, ma himsih karpanan vrtha (SB 10.4.12)

He has taken birth elsewhere, don’t kill me, don’t kill other babies.

iti prabhasya tam devi
maya bhagavati bhuvi
bahu nama niketesu
bahu nama bahuva ha (SB 10.4.13)

This is yoga maya, she was already informed by the Lord that once you assist me with this appearance day, my appearance past times, then you become known in this world by different names like Durga, Bhadrakali, Vijaya, Vaishnavi, Kumunda, Chandika, Krsna, Madhavi and on and on and Sharada, Ambika, Narayani, Maya. So after this, she takes different forms and appears in
different parts of Bharat Varsha and the worship continues. Now Kamsa, he was really surprised after eight years anticipation, expecting that child, eighth child he was also expecting a boy child and a girl has taken birth and she has taken the form of Durga and scaring Kamsa and then she disappears and Kamsa was thinking oh that voice, I thought that was Godly voice, some God’s voice, people in this world do tell lies, but now demigods have started telling lies, that predication has not come true. What happened and there is full of regret.

aho bhaginy aho bhama (SB 10.4.15)

His whole mood has changed and he is approaching Vasudev and Devaki, touching their feet and begging for forgiveness and he is releasing them as they are all bound up, so you may kindly return to your homes, so Vasudev and Devaki were set free and Kamsa returns to his palace, he spents a night and next morning.

tasyam ratryam vyatitayam
kamsa ahuya mantrinah
tebhya acasta tat sarvam
yad uktam yoga nidraya (SB 10.4.29)

So he has called special meeting of all his ministers and what he experiences the day before, in fact it was during the night, after mid night he wants to share all that experience , what he had to go through with his ministers.

akarnya bhartur gaditam

tam ucur deva satravah (SB 10.4.30)

He said, yes but the demigods are our enemies, we have to wipe them out from this planet, I beg to your proposal then with to Kamsa, all children born in previous ten days, we will kill them all, you just order us.

kim udyamaih karisyanti
devah samara bhiravah
nityam udvigna manaso
jya ghosair dhanusas tava (SB 10.4.32)

And they started praising and flattering Kamsa, sir, when you have your dhanus, the bow and the arrow, the string the sound of the string as the demigods hear, they all began trembling that’s the kind of power you have, Kamsa and they say, this Vishnu is always scared of you, is always hiding in the hearts of his devotees that is Vishnu, what about

?ambhun? v? vanaukas? (SB 10.4.36)

And the Shiva is always in cremation ground smearing ashes all over his body, should need not to be worry.

Kim indrenalpa viryena (SB 10.4.36)

And Indra is, doesn’t have much power,

brahmana va tapasyata (SB 10.4.36)

And Brahma is always busy with his tapasya

Tatas tan mula khanane (SB 10. 4.37)

We should uproot all of those from this planet and the mula (source) of all the demigods or strength is Vishnu

Mulam hi visnur devanam

Yatra dharmah sanatanah (SB 10.4.39)

And where there sanatana dharma is being practised, it is where the Vishnu resides.

tasya ca brahma go vipras

tapo yajnah sa daksinah (SB 10.4.39)

And sanatana dharma, the brahamins, the cows yajna, so we should all stop this. We should attack sanatana dharma.

tasmat sarvatmana rajan
brahmanan brahma vadinah
tapasvino yajna silan
gas ca hanmo havir dughah (SB 10.4.40)

So now the proposal is all in favour is, please raise your hands, there is a big assembly, all the big parliament is there. So we want to kill they are making a list, the cows are on the list, tapasvasi’s whose who perform austerities they are on the list, specially the Brahmins and cows should be killed.

namo brahmanya devaya
go brahmana hitaya ca
jagad dhitaya krsnaye
govindaya namo namah

The cows are very dear to Krsna, the brahmana’s are very dear to Krsna, so we should kill Brahmana’s , we should kill all the cows because from cows come all the ghee and other items required for yajna, for worshiping the deity, so they made this Brahman and cows are target. So even 5000 years ago this thing and this of course even to this day goes on attacking the sanatan dharma or the brahmana’s and the cows, even in India the cows are killed, some years ago,

Radha Radhanath ki Jai.

And the parliament does the question, the cows, the cows killing, the slaughter house in India were being discussed, the concern was, the cows when they are slaughtered in Indian slaughter houses because the blades used for killing, they are not sharp enough, as a result it takes little extra time to kill. So what to do, of course they could have easily resolved, no more cow killing still it was proposed that we should modernise our slaughter houses. We should sharpen the blades,
the cows could be killed faster, less suffering, when they are killed like that, the kind members of the parliament out of kindness of the animal slaughter house out of kindness for the cows they were proposing. We should modernise the slaughter houses. So that sharpens blades could kill cows like that. Okay there is all in favour and majority in favour of modernising the slaughter houses in India,

The cows is so dear to Krsna.

Gopal Krsna Bhagwan ki Jai.

Krsna cares for cows so much luta luta dadhi makhana khayo, as we go through these chapters, we come across Lord Krsna’s butter stealing pastimes. Krsna likes to steal butter which comes from cow gvala bala sanga dhenu carayo, all the Krsna’s cow herding cows.

He doesn’t even wear shoes while herding the cows in Vrindavan, his feet are worshiped by Brahma, Shiva and Lakshmi but with those lotus feet of the Lord, he is using in the service of the cows all day’s using his those pinkish lotus feet, soft lotus feet, tender lotus feet walking all over the Braj serving the cows, so much practical affection Krsna has for his cows and for the Brahman’s. Brahmins are worshipped by the Lord. In Dwarka Sudama was worshipped, Narada Muni comes, another Brahmin, Krsna worships brahmana, Krsna worship cows and this is by protecting Dharma, one protects himself or herself or protects the country by Dharmo rakshati rakshitah , this was Krsna’s.

Then Yashoda had proposed Krsna please take shoes, please wear shoes in the forest they will help you but Krsna say, No, No, I will not wear the shoes, cows don’t have shoes, cows don’t wear shoes. No, No please you wear, as mother Yashoda was insisting, Krsna says, okay, if you get the shoes for all the cows, then how many cows Krsna is looking after, nine hundred thousand cows, so how many shoes are required , so many shoes were so many shoes which part, which company who provide so
many shoes. So Yashoda gave up this proposal, but at least take umbrella and hold, but the cows don’t have. No, No, but you please take. Okay if you get the umbrella’s for the cows, nine hundred thousand umbrella’s, but cows have only feet and no hands. Now nine hundred thousand persons are required to hold nine hundred thousand umbrella’s over nine hundred thousand cows. So Krsna flatly refused no, no shoes for me, no umbrella for me.

That time Krsna says Dharmo rakshati rakshitah , my dear mother, Dharmo rakshati rakshitah , if we protect religion, dharma then that dharma will protect us. So let us just protect our religion and to take care of the cows, serve the cows, serve the Brahmin’s this is our dharma. So the Kamsa and the company here, he was, there proposal is to kill Brahmin’s and cows and the babies. All the babies born in last ten days that of course, they were talking of killing the born babies, newly born, these days babies are not even allowed to take birth while they are still helpless with in the womb, kill them. So mothers is killing the babies and the society is killing the mother in the form of cows.

Gomata ki jai…..

So this is the kind of the program, is Kamsa they are now going on campaign. On this campaign will last for ten more years, because Kamsa has just heard that you killer have taken birth elsewhere. It is going to be, all his associates to crush dharma, principles of dharma, persons following the practices those principles, killing babies and the goal was of course eighth child. Where is that eighth child, who has taken birth elsewhere? So they were looking and looking and it took, they
could never find after ten, eleven years again Narada Muni, Narayana, Narayana. As he comes, you know that Krsna and Balaram, in the house of Nanda Maharaja, that is seventh and eighth children of Devaki and then Kamsa makes plan to bring Krsna over to Mathura and with a wrestling match was excuse and he was going to attempt to kill Krsna. In fact this is big ignorance, anyone who thinks he could kill God, he has no clue of what God is, Just thinking, it is demonic idea/ thought of killing God. God cannot be killed, even soul cannot be killed.

nainam chindanti sastrani
nainam dahati pavakah (BG 2.23)

Bhagavad Gita, No weapon could kill the soul, the soul cannot be killed, the super soul and is but Lord is certainly, couldn’t be possible to kill. So finally as we go through chapters thirty, forty chapters of Krsna’s past time and then past time of Krsna, killing Kamsa.

Haribol.
You like that idea, some of you didn’t do haribol, we are wondering which party you belong. So when demon is killed devotee rejoice. So that’s god program.

paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam
dharma samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge (BG 4.8)

So Lord had appeared to protect his devotees “vinasaya ca duskrtam” to annihilate the demons, miscreants , by doing so he establish “dharma samsthapanarthaya” he establishes principles of dharama, so that’s the kind of, this one final statement of that chapter 3 says.

hanta sreyamsi sarvani
pumso mahad atikramah (SB 10.4.46)

When the, the brahman’s, the Vaishnava’s, sadhu’s, general when they are offended what to speak of killing them, this will kill or diminish the killars of the bramanical culture, offenders of Vaishnava’s and Vaishnav Culture that person’s life will be minimised.

ayuh sriyam yaso dharmam
lokan asisa eva ca (SB 10.4.46)

Their beauty will, they will lose beauty, fame, lost, elevation to the higher planet forget it . If one is offender of Vaishnava’s, vaishnav culture, Krishna conscious culture and with that we want to remember the very special event of Nandoutsav, or Nanda Utsav. Nand Maharaj had a big celebration in Gokul Dham.

Gokul Dham ki Jai…..
yashoda nanda patni ca
jatam param abudhyata
na tad lingam parisranta

nidrayapagata smrtih (SB 10.3.53)

So Yashoda, it is from previous chapter alos, end of chapter 3, Yashoda because she was tired, as the child labour, she was and also influence of Yoga maya, she could not she didn’t take not, whether she gave birth to a daughter or a boy “na tad lingam” she didn’t know, have I gave birth to a boy or a girl, she didn’t, so she had given birth to the daughter we heard yesterday and that daughter was taken to Mathura and child born in Mathura was now in Gokul, in front of Yashoda. One devotee
yesterday asked me question, question was did Yashoda give birth to just one child or two children.

I deeper study into this subject matter, it is confidential, we don’t tell anybody and for sure you won’t tell. This is goswami’s of Vrindavan, literature, the talk of Yashoda giving birth to two children. A daughter which she gave birth to, she described in the shastra’s as Krsna’s Anuja, anu means afterwards, ja means taking birth, Krsna anjua means Krsna took birth first and then anuja then this yoga maya is appearing as daughter. The theory of two children, Yashoda two children. So the
Krsna, Devki Nandan coming from Mathura side and Yashoda Nandan, Yashoda give birth to, this two becomes one. Devaki Nandan enters Yashoda Nandan and then one and the daughter was taken away to Mathura.

nandas tv atmaja utpanne
jatahlado maha manah
ahuya vipran veda jnan
snatah sucir alankrtah (SB 10.5.1)

So, there in Gokul, “nandas tv atmaja utpanne” the good news of Krsna’s appearance and Nand Maharaj ji is very, very ecstatic , very happy “alahad” he is full of joy.

Haribol.
“Maha-Manah” Nanda Maharaja described as “maha-manah”; great soul, broad minded Nand Maharaj Nanda “ahuya vipran” they are having a different programme planning here, where they were planning to kill Vipran’s, Brahmin’s and here as child has taken birth in the family, he is gathering all Brahmin’s. Yes, all brahmin’s please come. Invitation for all the brahmin’s vedagya’s those who know the Vedas. There was a special word around “snatah” Nanda Maharaja takes his bath, chanting all the mantras.

Gange yamune cha-ev Godavari sarasvati sannidhim kurum

Requesting, inviting all the rivers, please come, kindly allow me to take bath, “sucir alankrtah” and he is putting on special clothes and some ornaments also, child has taken birth and this nanda baba, he is baba by this time, Baba you know who is called baba elderly, Nanda Maharaja is an elderly person, when he had his first child, soon after marriage and when child come, some joy is of course there but when you have no child and you are waiting and waiting, happening and not happening and finally the child comes. Haribol, anticipating in the arrival of child and then the child is finally here. So he is joyful and he is not just alone joyful, the word has spread all over Vrindavan, every where they all come to know.

Nanda Ghar Anand bhayo,

Vrindavan in Braj they talk like this way, Nanda ghar anand bhayo, oh what happen, where are you going, people of so many village and town are running, rushing to Gokul. So those who didn’t know what is this all about, why so many people are going in direction of Gokul, oh! you don’t know “nanda ghar anand anand bhayo” that ananda has taken birth at Nanda’s home. They are not saying indirectly that child has taken birth or the baby boy, nanda ke ghar anand bhayo or other meaning is
home of Nanda Maharaja is filled with ananda, filled with joy.

Haribol.

The joy has taken birth in Nanda Bhavan, as soon as people will find out, they would also keep running to Nanda Bhawan, nanda gram to have a grand festival.

Nanda ghar anand bhayo,
Jai kaniya lal ki……
vacayitva svastyayanam
jata karmatmajasya vai
karayam asa vidhivat
pitr devarcanam tatha (SB 10.5.2)

So the brahamana’s have come and they are chanting different auspicious mantra’s and Nand Maharaj, this is, he is giving out so many gifts to the Brahmana’s. What are the gifts, what are the rewards.

dhenunam niyute pradad
viprebhyah samalankrte ( SB 10.5.3)

By now he has given out two hundred thousand cows in charity. Yes the cows, samalankrte the golden cows, their horns, around the necks are different bells, cloth, embodied cloth on their backs and some of them their horns pointed, they have lemons and lemon in that incense and incense is lit, the cows walking and all this. Two hundred thousand cows all, and all well dressed cows, well decorated cows, all this distributed to the Brahmins.

taladrin sapta ratnaugha
satakaumbhambaravrtan (SB 10.5.3)

There are the big heaps of grains, little mountains, little hill grains, “tiladrin”, sesame seeds they are very useful grain, you get til oil and you could do “swaha, swaha”. Til has lots of, til is used, so tiladrain, mountain or hills of sesame seeds are they are covered with silk clothes and some other ornaments and they are also being distributed in charity to Brahmins.

kalena snan saucabhyam
samskarais tapasejyaya
sudhyanti danaih santustya
dravyany atmatama vidyaya (SB 10.5.4)

So, by taking bath, one purifies his own body, we don’t have just a body, we also have minds, so we should not be only cleaning the bodies, cleaning/ the cleansing of the mind is important so how to do that “sudhyabtu santustya atnatna” when the mind is santusta, the satisfied mind, oh this is enough for me, I am satisfied, mind that is satisfied and when mind is purified then mind is satisfied. So purification of body and purification of mind , “yatra chala va santusto”, I am santusta whatever he has sent, whatever is in my quota, I am having it. I am satisfied those kinds of mind, purified minds. So minds are purified the conscious is purified by “ceto darpan marjanam” chetna, the consciousness is purified by “param vijayate Shri Krsna sankirtanam”.

As the Sankirtan movement is, this Hare Krsna movement, Sankirtana movement does the cleaning of the consciousness, consciousness is cleansed, mind is cleansed, everyday our minds and consciousness becomes polluted because it is contaminated, we are worried about air pollution but what about mind pollution, Isn’t it polluted. So begin with purifying the mind then surrounding also become, right actions, then thoughts, then speech and action, so origin is in the thought, thought process. Everyday so much dirt gets into the mind, what about cleansing that mind, you do lot of good to the family, to that individual, to that family, to that society, country, humanity at large could be benefited. So residents of Vrindavan, Gokul, they are doing that. These minds are satisfied.

sa vai manah Krsna padaravindayor (SB 9.4.18)

sa vai manah Krsna pradra vindayor, on their mind, there are charnar vinda, lotus feet of the lord is, always thinking meditation upon the lord’s lotus feet, the mind becomes purified, “atma atma vidyaya”, and they my Krsna consciousness, the atma and our consciousness about my , so samaskara , then sanskara’s are meant for purifying, our whole existence, samsakara “sanskarate bhajte dvijah”

One becomes, twice born by undergoing some samsakara, processes different vidhi vidhan, different undertakings, they are meant to purify, from womb to dome. Child with the right consciousness, purified consciousness would appear, Garbhadhan Samskara, then Namakaran samsakara, vidhya arambh samsakara, time to go to school, learning reading writing, vidya samsakara, vivah samsakara, marriage ceremony, vivah yajna or vivah samsakara, the scared thing to do, the vivah is only in human society, you get some invitation, wedding invitation from other societies , that dog is getting married, in fact this marriage institution is a special feature of the human society. You can’t stay brahmachari, naishtika brahmachari for whole life, can’t stay, so you are happy when I say you can’t stay and enter Grastha ashram, Grastha ashram, you have to belong one of the four ashram, if you claim that you are human being, then you have to be part of one these ashrams.

1. Brahmachari ashram
2. Grastha ashram
3. Vanaprastha ashram
4. Sannyasa ashram

One of these ashrams, so this grastha ashram entrance is yajna, this is samsakara, so lot of people are not getting married these days, like other species, other bird society, animal society, no marriages, now human society alos no more marriages, no way, no better, we are no better not different. Someway we are trying to prove we are no less then you animals. We also don’t marry but these are samskara’s meant for purification and more and more and then there is antim samsakara.

So, these samskara’s are meant for purification, so this child has taken birth and jata karma, at that time, there is a samsakara, so this is all culture being followed, practiced. Here we are getting, example is there.

saumangalya giro viprah
suta Magadha vandinah
gayakas ca jagur nedur (SB 10.5.5)

There are different, just talk different instruments were being played, creating all auspiciousness.

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna hare hare
Hare Ram Hare Ram ram ram hare hare (kirtan by Gurudev)
Nitai gaur premanande, hari haribol

So like this singers are singing, musician are playing different instruments.

gavo vrsa vatsatara (SB 10.5.7)

Cows are being decorated, maharha-vastrabharana ( SB 10.5.8) people are arriving , wearing new cloths,
some of them are wearing turbans.

gopah samayayu rajan
nano payana-panayah (SB 10.5.8)

And different gifts are also, gift giving was on Nand Maharaj is so happy, just giving so many gifts on
this occasion of his son’s birthday, birthday party, first ever birthday party also.

gopyas cakarnya mudita
yasodayah sutdbhavam (SB 10.5.9)

Word is spreading, what is the word, “yasodayah sutodbhavam” Yashoda has given birth to son,
Yashoda has a son, Yashoda has a son, whole Braj is just happy.

nava kunkuma kinjalka
mukha pankaja bhutayah (SB 10.5.10)

People are, they are all beautiful features, lotus face they have, lotus eyes they have and they are filling their ears with this news, this news is becoming the decoration for the ears, not because of the ear rings, ears are decorated with this news, Krsna has taken birth, it is the decoration and those who are coming, also bringing lots of gifts for Nand, Yashoda and for Sri Krsna specially. “gopyah mani kundala ( SB 10.5.11) gopis are arriving , they have lockets, they have so many ornaments around their necks, ankle bells “citrambarah” ambarah they are wearing different garments of different colours and they have flowers in the hair decoration, but as they are going little faster, they want to get their quickly, so some of the flowers are falling down and because hundreds and thousands of gopis are walking so whole, the path is flowers everywhere, flowers fallen from gopis head.

nandalayam sa valaya vrajatir virejur
vyalola kundala payodhara hara sobhah (SB 10.5.11)

Sukhdev Goswami, as is describing, giving so many details of how people look like, those who are coming, How Kundala, as they are walking, they are, the earrings are moving and as all they arrived, “asisah” they want to go where is the child, where is the child, the big crowd, all want to go and see the child and blessed the child and offer ciram pahiti balake ( SB 10.5. 12) let god protect the child, god himself is here and they are , “let god protect the child’. They don’t know, that is God, it is vatsalaya of Braj wasis. In Vrindavan he is just their child, this kind of affection, this kind of understanding they have. Not majestic Lord, they don’t have over reference to this child, as considering him as a Lord, otherwise they cannot express that affection. So they are full of vatsalaya bhav.

haridra curna tailadbhih
sincantyo janam ujjaguh (SB 10.5.12)

So, they are all throwing some powders, or some mixture of the turmeric and oil, is being sprinkled, causes auspiciousness on the child.

vaditrani mahotsave (SB 10.5.13)

Vaditarni, so many instruments are, musical instruments being played.

krsne visvesvare nante
nandasya vrajam agate (SB 10.5.13)

The Krsna, Krsna has appeared, visvesvare, Vishva Ishwar, Ishwar of the vishwa, as the master of the universe, Lord of the universe “anante” he is unlimited but now he is appearing as just a son, Nandasya Balakam, leap Balakam.

Kada Lakshyami balakam, leap malakam

They are very anxious to see the child, Nandasya Balakam, leap Malakam, the Balak is also wearing garland of Kadamba flowers, other flowers. “ Lasat tilak bhalkam”. He has tilak on his forehead “palakam sarva satvanam” as he is the protector of all the devotees and they want to see.

kada darshyami nandasya balakam

The one who see the child and offer gifts, blessings

gopah parasparam hrsta
dadhi krisa ghrtambubhih (SB 10.5.14)

And now they started the throwing of different milk products at each other, dadhi, yoghurt and butter being thrown form all different directions, throwing the time of holi, as they throw colours, this is tons of yoghurt and milk products in Vrindavan. These all residents of Vrindavan, they all have cows, those cows navnitam ‘navanitais ca ciksipuh (SB 10.5. 14) they started throwing at each other and having a big festival.

nando maha manas tebhyo
vaso lankara go dhanam
ye nye vidyopajivinah (SB 10.5.15)

Everyone has come, the ladies and gentlemen and vipra’s and Brahmana’s, they depend, their livelihood, some of them there livelihood depends on just teaching, education and they are gifts also from Nanda Maharaj.

tais taih kamair adinatma
yathocitam apujayat (SB 10.5.16)

So, Nanda Maharaja, is like that all those guests “atithi devo bhava” is treating them as if God have come. All there Braja vasis and this wonderful reception for them and they are getting so many different gifts, in return.

vishnor aradhanarthaya (SB 10.5.16)

All these residents of Vrindavan, they have come for darshan of Krsna and that way they are doing aradhana of Vishnu, of Lord Sri Krsna.

rohini ca maha bhaga
nana gopadbhinandita (SB 10.5.17)

And amongst them, the specially has been mentioned here is Rohini, she is very fortunate, “maha-bhaga”, “rohini ca maha bhaga” she is mother of Balaram and she will alos have now opportunity to serve Krsna and Balaram, what a great fortune , “rohini ca maha bhaga” and one of her services is reception, receiving the guests looking after them, so “vyacarad” she is kind of wondering all around over receiving the guests.

tata arabhya nandasya
vrajah sarva samrddhiman
harer nivasatma gunai
ramakridam abhun nrpa (SB 10.5.18)

So Sukhdev Goswami, is making a comment as Lord appears now in Gokul and specially Nanda Bhavan, and Nanda Bhavan has become Harer Nivas, Hari Nivas, the abode of the Lord and where there is Lord “ramakridam abhun nrpa” there you will find Lakshmi, where there is Narayan, source of Narayan, Sri Krsna, Lakshmi is also there. So Lakshmi is residing now in Gokul, according to Brahma.

lak?m?-sahasra-?ata-sambhrama-sevyam?na?
govindam ?di-puru?a? tam aha? bhaj?mi

Where there is Krsna, krsna’s lotus feet are served by Lakshmi, how many lakshmi’s , lak?m?- sahasra-?ata-sambhrama, hundreds and thousands of Lakshmi’s, they want to serve the lotus feet of the Lord. Then there will be no shortage of anything. Just worship, Govinda worship, Sri Krsna, Lakshmi pati, He is Lakshmi pati, otherwise Lakshmi is chanchal, Lakshmi comes and goes but if you catch hold of Hari, Narayan then with that comes Lakshmi also.

Lakshmi Narayan ki Jai

But lot of time, preference is given to Lakshmi and forgot Narayan that is Rawan Program, he took away Lakshmi, sita is Lakshmi and one was the, not interested in Ram. His interest is Sita, the death was the result, lost his life.

gopan gokula raksayam
nirupya mathuram gatah
nandah kamsasya varsikyam
karam datum kurudvaha (SB 10.5.19)
Nanda ke lala ki jai.
Krsna Kaniya lal ki jai.

Nanda utsav, very grand, Sri Krsna appearance day festival concluded. So that days description of that festival is here, this description brings us closer to Krsna, closer to Gokul and helps us to enter eternal celebration gives us experience of be there and what are those 5000, so many hundred years that distance doesn’t felt. This pastimes of Lord are eternal, they are not old pastimes, old history, it is dead history, this is life, this is lively, every time we hear, read the past time appears come alive.

So when festival gets over, we don’t want to leave the festival, we like staying with the festival, but as we keep hearing, after hearing comes, hearing is the beginning that’s not end, next thing we have to do is thinking , contemplating remembering that past time.

Bhagavat Katha, there is another Bhagavat katha that took place, it was recited by Gokarna for the benefit of his brother Dhundakari. So many others also heard that katha, there was conclusion/samapan the last day, yagya took place. Then one little plane arrived to bring someone back to Vaikunth, back to Lord’s abode. But the air host was kind of signalling you come, he was Dhundakari, brother of Gokarna, you come, you come. So this person was like getting ready to board the plane, as they are going to start the engine again, before take off, so Gokarna the speaker of Bhagavat say, hey, wait a minute. What happened, thousands were hearing katha and you are bringing only one person back to godhead. I was expecting you to come with big Jambo Jets and give lift to everybody, all have heard katha. What happened? What’s the difference?

This person who you are working to bring back, he heard, others also hear, what is the difference between hearing and hearing and those hari dasa’s who had come from Lord’s abode bring this one person, they explained, yes, yes everyone heard that’s true, but they walk out the door, they left the katha, they didn’t do mananam. They have used the word (Haridas) Mananam. There was no Mananam, no contemplation, bringing that topic back, if thinking, contemplating and other reasons, how desperately this person was hearing, with a really anxious and he also had all the faith in the words spoken. So this particular person hearing was special, that made him eligible to Krsna’s abode. So these Haridas said, you organise katha one more time, in the beginning you could tell them okay mananam has to be there.

sradha balwati dhyanam

Faith has to be there, sanshay atmanan visnasyati, if you doubt, you are doomed, let them hear following these conditions. We could come back. There is no shortage of air craft’s, we could lift everybody. So they, this is what they did, next time when katha was organised, this time they really heard with full attention. They were desperate, all day they were thinking, calling each other and reminding past time no hai, hello kewal Hare Krsna bolo. Sharing this and making that as a treasure and preserving/contemplating that, this katha is Lord, has to be preserved. Go back, revisit. I thought to say this towards the beginning of the Katha, not towards the end. So it is not too late, we have few more days to do. So just to conclude this chapter. Vasudeva has a visitor Nanda Maharaj. Nanda Maharaja goes to Mathura to pay all the taxes. He wants to be in good books of the kind. So he is personally going, making all the payments and upon the payment dues were paid then there was a
great meeting between Nanda Maharaja and Vasudev.

upalabdho bhavan adya
durlabham priya darsanam (SB 10.5.24)

This is very rare to meet our own people. We are always busy but today we are meeting so they are, as soon as Vasudev saw Nanda Maharaj, Vasudev gets up and receives him with deep embrace, they are over whelmed and as far as the topic is Krsna, how are children. Vasudev is interested of course in the welfare of Krsna, Balaram, specially he knows about Krsna but Vasudev says you better should go back right away. Nanda Maharaj, you go back to Gokul right away and he gives his warning that there may be some troubles expected in Gokul.

So you should rush back, so Nand Maharaj is now returning from Mathura to Gokul and that is the sixth day, Krsna is six days old and when he was one day old, this festival, Nanda utsav, when he was six days old, another festival was going to be held in Gokul and as Nanda Maharaj ji is returning there are really. It is not very good and what has happened is “Putna had come”. “Putna had come”. So that’s the next pastime, Krsna is six days old
and putna is killed and many interesting details of that past time, very famous past time of lord. Sri Krsna devotees relish this all the time and the kindness Krsna has even showed to this Putna is also known for that.

So we will remembering that, hearing, unless we hear difficult to remember. So will be hearing that past time which will help us many interesting details which we will be sharing tomorrow. What Krsna was thinking, he had his eyes closed, he is in the lap of Putna, he is thinking this way or that way, even the thoughts of Krsna, what Krsna was thinking about. So we will get more closer to the Lord as we narrate the past time of “Krsna Killing Putna” tomorrow.

Nitali Gaur Preamanande, hari Hari bol.

Lord treated equally the poorest Kolavecha Sridhara and the richest King Prataprudra

Lord treated equally the poorest Kolavecha Sridhara and the richest King Prataprudra

04 04 2020 [1:02:09]

Katha Day 4

Venue: Theur, Pune

Hare Krishna!

We could sing that prayer again. Every time we recite Gauranga, Gauranga’s pastimes or karuna avatar, Gaura Bhagavan’s pastimes, or whatever qualities pastimes in the beginning we do sing this prayer. You could sing with me or after me.

jaya jaya sri caitanya jay nityananda
jay advaita-candra jaya gaura bhakta vrnda

“All glories to Sri Caitanya, Nityananda, Advaita as well as the Gaura bhaktas, devotees of Gauranga!”

So, I think this is our fourth talk in this series. Gauranga is kind, karuna avatar and He’s equally kind to all His devotees. Maybe He’s more kinder towards His devotees than the non-devotees, special mercy towards the devotees. But, even amongst the devotees, some devotees are poor; some devotees are rich in worldly sense. In fact, poor devotees or rich devotee, they’re equally enriched with love of Godhead.

I thought I would talk to you about one devotee, Kolavecha Sridhara and then King Prataparudra. One is from Navadvipa Mayapur – Kolavecha Sridhara and King Prataprudra is a king of Orissa, king of  Puri. Of course, we’re talking about both of these devotees 500 years ago, at the time of Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu or they were devotees of Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. So, Lord was equally kind, magnanimous, merciful towards both of these devotees.

samo ‘ham sarva-bhutesu
na me dvesyo ‘sti na priyah  [BG 9.29]

Translation: I envy no one, nor am I partial to anyone. I am equal to all.

Lord has declared in Bhagavad Gita, samo aham, “I am equal to all.” So, that is exhibited here  by the Lord in this case of these two prabhus, two devotees,  Kolavecha Sridhara and King Prataprudra.

Kolavecha Sridhara. “Kola” is banana. The inside, inner stuff of the trunk of the banana tree. “vecha” means one who sells kola. Of course, he was also specialist in selling banana products. Also bananas or banana flowers, banana leaves, banana cups. He was making some money and maintaining his household affairs with that income but he was a great devotee of Gauranga.

He always chanted, “Haribol! Haribol! Haribol!” Or, he chanted day and night,

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna krsna Krsna Hare Hare

Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Even all night long he would chant out loud. Neighbors would feel troubled and would complained and they would say, “Look at this poor Kolavecha! He must be hungry that’s why he’s crying.” His chanting, singing was like crying. He was crying for the Lord. So, they considered that was a crying and they thought that the crying was because he’s hungry. They were angry because of his singing in the middle of the night also.

Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu used to visit Kolavecha Sridhara. There’s a sridhara angan for those of you who wish to know the whereabouts of Kolavecha Sridhara. In Mayapur, there’s Rajapur, where ISKCON has Jagannatha mandir. Not far from ISKCON Jagannatha mandir, there is Sridhara angan. He had a little farm and he stayed there. That’s where he came from.

Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, without fail every day, He visited the shop of Kolavecha Sridhara. Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had a very special relationship with him. The humorous dealings of Gauranga or even teasing Kolavecha Sridhara are very famous or very palatable to hear. Sri Krsna Chaitanya, Gauranga, Nimai, Vishvambhar, so many names, He would go there to do shopping and He would ask,”What is the cost of this banana? What is the cost of this kola? What is the cost of this banana flowers?” And Sridhara would quote a price and Gaura, “No, no, no, you said this is 80 paisa. I will give you 40 paisa!”

Sridhar was very honest. A small businessman, shopkeeper, but very honest. Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu would just argue with him and try to get a discount, as bigger discount as possible and Gauranga would say, “I’ll just give you this much, take this!” He would take the products He had selected and try to leave and Kolavecha Sridhara would try to catch up with Him and take that products back. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu would say, “You must be making a lot of money! You have been selling these  banana products for a very long time. You must have a lot of wealth. Why don’t you give a little discount?” And Chaitanya Mahaprabhu also would say, “You worship Ganga with 50% of your income.” Yes, Sridhara was also known for spending 50% of his income for Krsna consciousness, for God consciousness, worshipping Ganga, Har Har Gange! “You are spending 50% of your income for worshipping Ganga. I am the father of Ganga!” And hearing this, Kolavecha Sridhara would be like, “What? Vishnu! Vishnu! How could you make such a claim, that you are the father of Ganga?” Chaitanya Mahaprabhu would say, “Please, give Me this product charge with less money.” Sridhar would say, “You could check the next door, shop if it’s cheaper there, please purchase from there. Why are you insisting getting products from me if you think they’re costlier?”

Like this, Mahaprabhu and Kolavecha Sridhara, would be arguing and go on for hours, striking the deal. Finally, Sridhar would let Mahaprabhu take anything and everything from his shop for whatever price that He would want to pay. So, this is Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and His loving dealings with Kolavecha Sridhara, who was kind of poorest of the poor. But Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was very kind, very affectionate towards Kolavecha Sridhara and He was so much pleased with Kolavecha Sridhara .

Hari Hari! I was just thinking that it is not that how much wealth you have, what quantity of whatever, the goods or what big offerings you are making to the Lord or big funds you are giving. That is not what really counts, the quantity doesn’t count. What counts is love, devotion, dedication, surrender, whole hearted surrender unto the Lord. The Lord is pleased.

I was just thinking, in pastimes of Lord Sri Rama, when that bridge was being built from Rameshwar to Sri Lanka and Hanuman and company, construction  company, were building, some monkeys were building, some bears also, they were throwing big big boulders and trees and hills and what not. So, while Hanuman and his company’s associates were doing a big job of throwing big, big objects, rocks into the ocean, there was a squirrel, gilahari, she was also doing her part. What was she doing? She would go to the beach, roll in the sand, pick up some sand in her hairy body, and gently walk onto those rocks and then she would shake her body and all the sand particles would get downloaded or dropped in between the rocks. The sand was working like a  cement so that the bridge would be strong.

So, Hanuman was watching the act of squirrel. He said, “Come on! What good is your few grams of sand? Get out! You may get crushed under the feet of my associates. Big, big monkeys here are doing big, big jobs. You are just little and these few grains of sand. Please, go, save yourself.” Rama was overhearing this. That wasn’t so much of a conversation. It was a  one way traffic only. Hanuman was talking or threatening or warning that squirrel, “Go away!” And Rama noticed that. He called Hanuman over, “Come here! I say, Come Here!”  And as Hanuman was close to Rama, He rebuked Hanuman saying, who do you think you are? Whatever the strength I have invested in you, you are offering all of that in My service. Whatever energy or strength I have invested in the body of the squirrel, the squirrel is giving 100% back to Me in my service!”

She was building the bridges in service of Sri Rama. So, like this Sri Rama pointed out the faulty thought and his pride was crushed. So, the point is atmanivedanam.

manasa deha geha jo kichu mora arpilu tuwa pade, nanda kisor

Whatever we have, offer that manasa, your mind. Better offer your mind. Deha-your body. Geha- your home, and jo kichu, whatever you have, dedicate that in service of the Lord, is advice of the sages and the sastras, scriptures. Although we described Kolavecha Sridhara as a pauper or the poorest of the poor, no, he was the richest. He had all the wealth. he was the wealthiest person around. What was the wealth? Well, he was satisfied, he had peace of mind. He wasn’t greedy trying to grab more and more. He never thought, “I lack something, there’s some shortage in my life and I must run around and make more and more money and buy this and shop that.” He was self satisfied. This self satisfaction, satisfaction of the self and that meant satisfaction of the soul. That is the goal, to satisfy the soul. Not just to satisfy the senses or to gratify the senses, to satisfy them or to try to satisfy the mind by entertainment and satisfy the body. No, go deeper. Within the body is our real self seated in the heart, along with self is super soul. So satisfying the soul is the goal.

So, this Kolavecha Sridhara was fully satisfied.  He was atmarama. So, he was happy, more than happy. Lord Gauranga was making him happy. Giving him all the ananda, all the joy and he was enjoying his life. And of course, he was chanting the holy names of the Lord and that was satisfying the soul. This is the gift of Gauranga Mahaprabhu, that karuna avatar. We are talking about karuna avatar, Gauranga. So, kindly, He has given the holy name to Sridhara. Kolavecha Sridhara had that wealth, wealth of the holy name.

golokera premadhana harinama sankirtana

This harinama sankirtana is the wealth. So, Sridhara was wealthy. Hence, he was happy. In order to be happy, he had to be wealthy. But the trouble is we do not understand what’s the real wealth and who do we have to really make happy. Not the senses, not the mind, not the body. We have to try to make ourselves, real self happy. Those who have received this gift of the holy name, as Gauranga Mahaprabhu is handing out this gift, then their souls are satisfied.

So, we could also be happy like Kolavecha Sridhara was happy. Okay, he was poor but he was happy and so was king Prataprudra. He was a king and he was also happy. Not because of all the luxuries he had at his disposal. Or, the palace or the chariot or whatever the costly clothes or the big position post. That was not the cause of his happiness. Whatever was the cause of happiness of Kolavecha Sridhara,  same thing. Why I say same thing? Same  one, Gauranga, Sri Krsna Chaitanya was the cause of happiness of Kolavecha Sridhara and so was Gauranga, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the cause of happiness of king Prataprudra. Lord is sarva karana karanama, He is the cause of all causes. Especially, cause of happiness, joy. Lord is the cause.

King Prataprudra ruled the Kingdom of Orissa. Jagannatha Puri was his capital. Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, we were talking yesterday, after 24 years in Navadvipa, He took sannyasa and His mother, Sacimata, appealed to her son, “Why don’t You stay in Jagannatha Puri? Mahaprabhu wanted to go to Vrndavana. “Oh, Vrndavana is very far. I will never ever get to see You. Jagannatha Puri is closer from Navadwipa, Bengal. So, please stay in Jagannatha Puri.” “Tathastu mother. So be it!” And then Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, after of course, travelling, there is Madhya Lila, for six years, Mahaprabhu made Jagannatha Puri as His home base and He spent next 18 years in Jagannatha Puri. Every day, He was performing pastimes. Or, His whole life is full of pastimes. Not every act of Mahaprabhu, every minute, all that He does is lilas, His pastimes. Unlimited pastimes He performed.

Amongst those was Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s  participation in Jagannatha ratha yatra festival. Lord was there and He performed His pastimes in Puri for 18 years and, for sure, all those eighteen ratha yatras, one per year, He attended. Not only attended, He was the very center of that festival. Well, Him and Jagannatha were the center. Because Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is Jagannatha.

sei gaura, sei krsna, sei jagannatha. One who is Gauranga, He is Krsna, He is Jagannatha.

As Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu would participate in ratha yatra festival, He would be in front of the chariot. As He would come, although He is Jagannatha himself, He is playing the role of a devotee. He is in the mood of Radharani. As Chaitanya Mahaprabhu would come on the site or in front of the chariot of Jagannatha, He would offer His full dandavats, prostrated. Then, He would stand in front of Jagannatha with folded hands in awe and reverence; He would offer prayers unto Jagannatha.

jayati jayati devo devakinandano sau
jayati jayati vrsni vamsa pradipaha
jayati jayati meghashyamala komalango
jayati jayati prithvi bhara nasho mukundah

Like this He would pray. He was saying the prayer with full understanding. What is He saying? jayati jayati devo. “All glories to You, Jagannatha! All glories to You.” Who are You, Jagannatha? Who are You? Devakinandanaso. “You are Devakinandana. Krsna, you are Devakinandana!” Lots of times, when people see the form of Jagannatha, they are kind of bewildered. They do not know what to make out of that darsana. “Who’s this?” They do not know lot of times, that He is Krsna in that form, Jagannatha form, He Krsna Himself.

So, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is praying, devakinandanaso vrsni vamsa pradipa. “You are the lamp, deepak of vrsni vamsha, vrsni dynasty.” jayati jayati meghashyamala komalango. “You are shyamala, bluish-blackish complexion. When I’m looking at You, You are shyamala. If  I was to touch You, then you are komala. Your form is very, very soft. So, shyamala komalango. Your anga, your form is shymala and komala.” Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is praying like that.

jayati jayati prithvi bhara nasho mukunda

“You are minimizing the burden of the earth.” By doing what? Vinasaya ca duskrtam By killing, destroying the miscreants, the demons. That is why mother earth is feeling burdened. Anyway that’s another story. Earth had approached the demigods, “Could you please help? There are so many demons around, demoniac nature around and miscreants around. I’m feeling burdened. They are harassing and what not.”

So then, the demigods, by hearing there is a corona virus around. “Please, do something” and then the demigods said, “no, no! This is not our cup of tea. Sorry, we cannot help you.” They said that to mother earth, who had gone there in the form of a cow, shape of a cow. Then the demigods decided to approach the Lord and, on behalf of all the demigods, Brahma did wireless communication with the Lord. Now this was happening in the milk ocean, Kshirsagar. Lord was reported of what is happening on the planet earth. Dharmasya glanira bhavati. There’s so much decline in the religious principle. Abhyutanam adharmasya, irreligious is spreading like a wildfire everywhere. No one is there to check religiosity.

When Brahma communicated, reported what is happening on the earth. Lord said, “OK, I understand. So, if you, demigods, cannot handle them, then I’m the next, I’m the one. So, I will appear. I will make my appearance, sambhavami yuge yuge. Then Lord had appeared as Sri Krsna, this is 5000 years ago. Then He had done what? paritranaya sadhunam, protecting the devotees, vinasaya ca duskritam, annihilation of miscreants, demons, demonic nature and dharma samsthapanarthaya the Lord was establishing dharma.

Here Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, while praying to Jagannatha, He is taking note. Prithvi bhara nasho mukunda. “Oh Mukunda.” He has also addressed Jagannatha as Mukunda. Mukunda means one who gives liberation. Earth was kind of relieved or liberated from this burden. Prithvi – planet bhara – the burden  of the earth. “You relieved earth.”

Hari Hari! So, after the prayer, it was time to begin the ratha yatra procession of pulling the cart. That time, Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu noticed that there was King Prataprudra. Although he had the attire of a King, had a sword there and a crown there, but he was holding a broom and he was sweeping the street in front of Jagannatha’s cart. By seeing this act of humility, Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was impressed, He was pleased. His thought was, there is nothing wrong in meeting this devotee, this King Prataprudra. Anyway this is a long pastime. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was avoiding meeting, having an audience, with King Prataprudra thinking he is a King and Kings are attached to their powers,  attached to their wealth. They have isvara bhava, means controller.

Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu being sannyasi, in the renounced order of life, “I have nothing to do with the King. No, no! I won’t see him.” Devotees were appealing, “Please, meet or give audience to or interview to King Prataprudra.”

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had been avoiding for a long time. Finally, that ratha yatra day, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu noticed King Prataprudra with a broom sweeping, that was it.  Chaitanya Mahaprabhu wanted to meet him. Well, that is enough, as soon as He wanted. He wished and His yogamaya, His spiritual potencies and energies, lila shaktis, they make all the arrangements. So, that day, there is going to be a meeting with King Prataprudra.

As the procession, “jai jagannatha! jai jagannatha! jai jagannatha!”, the cart is rolling down on the road to Gundica Temple. During Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s times, He used to divide all the devotees into 7 different kirtana  mandalis, 7 different groups, I think, 4 in the front, 2 on either side, something like that and one behind also.

Then as kirtana started,  chanting and dancing started, it was noticed while those kirtaniyas were performing kirtana all around the chariot that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was dancing, “Oh you know what, chanting with our group only.” They were thinking like this. Each group was thinking. “Look! Look! We must be very special group! Just see, Mahaprabhu is chanting and dancing with our group!” But the mystery that He was chanting with all the 7 groups, simultaneously, was revealed by Gauranga. He was concealing that from all the groups, keeping it hidden, but He was revealing it only unto King Prataprudra. Very special blessing, benediction upon King Prataprudra. King Prataprudra was the only one to take note that Mahaprabhu was dancing with all the 7 groups, simultaneously.

By this act, by this lila, Gauranga Mahaprabhu is also proving, He does not have to really prove, but we understand that He is Krsna Himself.  Sri Krsna Chaitanya is Krsna Himself. Krsna has now become Sri Krsna Chaitanya. Sri Krsna, who is known for His rasa dance and while dancing in the rasa and expanding, becoming as many gopis are there, those many Krsnas. Here, as many groups are chanting, those many Gauranga Mahaprabhus. Krsna there in Vrndavana dancing in rasa dance and here chanting in sankirtana, also by expanding simultaneously with different groups.

So, the chariots rolled down, they are making progress. Half way through, the chariot stops, time for making offering to Jagannatha. Time for His meals. The chariot stopped, offering is being made, offering is being offered. Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu enters into the garden and He is lying down. He had been chanting and chanting and chanting, He is a little fatigued, tired. He is lying down, trying to relax.

So, this is the time, Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya and some other devotees inspired, encouraged King Prataprudra, “go and massage the lotus feet and full body massage of Gauranga. And he was asked to put on vaisnava clothes instead of his kingly robes or attire. As Caitanya Mahaprabhu is lying down with His eyes closed King Prataprudra approaches Mahaprabhu,  offers his obeisance’s and begins massaging the body, transcendental form of Gauranga He was also told, “While massaging, you should sing gopi geet . This will nourish Mahaprabhu’s emotions. The gopi bhava, Radha bhava.” Mahaprabhu, during ratha yatra, is exhibiting his Radha bhava. He is Radha,  radha krsna nahi anya. “If you recite gopigeet, Mahaprabhu would be relaxed, relieved and very, very happy. So King Prataprudra started reciting gopi geet. While singing he reached that very famous stanza:

tava kathamrtam tapta-jivanam
kavibhir iditam kalmasapaham
sravana-mangalam srimad atatam
bhuvi grnanti ye bhuri-da-janah

The last, end part attracted Mahaprabhu’s attention. Bhuvi grnanti ye bhuri-da-janah. The meaning of that particular stanza is, those who recite kathamrita, propagate kathamrita or Krsna kathamrita, Gauranga kathamrita, Rama kathamrita, share that with others, broadcast it far and wide, those personalities are bhuri da janah, they are charitable. They’re magnanimous people, bhuri da janah. Of course, gopis have spoken this, this is gopi geet, that those who recite, kathamrita, Krsna kathamrita and share that with others, they are bhuri da, they are magnanimous persons.

So, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu as He had heard this word bhuri da janah, Mahaprabhu started calling, “you are that bhuri da! You are that bhuri da.” He did not even know who that person was, who was massaging and who was singing that Gopi geet because, He was lying with His eyes closed.

He said, “You are reciting, you are feeding Me this kathamrita, so, you’re  bhurida. You have done great service to Me. You have given great charity to Me. So, I consider you to be very, very magnanimous. And I am very grateful for this gift , for this kathamrita. You have done so much for Me. I wish to do something in return for you.”

Saying so, Sri Krsna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu said, “What could I give you? I am just a mendicant in renounced order. I do not own anything. Oh, what could I offer you?” Mahaprabhu was saying this and then He was kind of getting up and then saying, “But, could I offer you My embrace?” He said this and then He gave a deep embrace to King Prataprudra. “This is all that I could do!” Well, Lord gave Himself to King Prataprudra . What more, there’s nothing more to give. Nothing remains, He’s purnam. Lord Himself gave to King Prataprudra in exchange of what? This tava kathamritam. King Prataprudra gave kathamrita, he recited kathamrita and that was karnamrita for Gauranga Mahaprabhu. In return, Mahaprabhu gave Himself to King Prataprudra.

So, we see how Lord treated equally the poorest of the poor, Kolavecha Sridhara of Navadvipa and the richest, wealthiest King Prataprudra of Jagannatha Puri, Orissa. This kathamrita is glorified.

I was just thinking, that the founder acarya of International Society of Krsna Consciousness, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada has given so much kathamrita to the whole world. He has given some 70 books packed with kathamrita. He gave Hare Krishna mantra kathamrita, namamrita, to the whole world. He gave so many, so many talks globally as he travelled. He sang himself also, bhajans and Hare Krishna kirtans. He wrote so many letters with nectarian instructions, sikshamrita, and he gave ocean of amrita to the whole world.

So, the Lord was pleased with King Prataprudra as King Prataprudra gave kathamrita to the Lord or he recited kathamrita. And our Srila Prabhupada was confident that Mahaprabhu must be giving His deep embrace to our spiritual master Srila Prabhupada also. So please accept this kathamrita on behalf of Srila Prabhupada that we’re trying to share with all those who are willing to listen and take advantage.

Of course, I am not the only one, there are so many around the world. Especially, these days, trouble times, to give the relief to the suffering humanity. We are sharing this nectar of the holy name, namamrita, sharing the nectar of kathamrita or Bhagvatamrita or Ramayana amrita. There are many forums where this amrita being made available. Just look around, explore, and search, you will find more and more kathamrita by very many devotees, leaders of this Hare Krsna movement.  Okay, we thank all our listeners for joining us. Of course, this stays on, I think, on Facebook, YouTube. Those who could not listen while we were talking, they can listen to this whenever it is convenient for you. Anyway, very thankful for your attention, Hare Krishna!

Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s travel from Navadvipa to Jagganath Puri

Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s travel from Navadvipa to Jagganath Puri
Day 7
Venue: Theur, Pune
08 04 2020

jai jai sri caitanya jai Nityanandaa jai advaitcandra jai gaura-bhakta-vrnda

Welcome yet again, this is our seventh and final of the series of talks of katha of karuna avatar Gaura Bhagawan katha. We end here with this seventh and final presentation. We will tell you at the end how we wish to continue this at least for another week in lockdown period. So,

anarpita-carim cirat karunay avatirnah kalua
samarpayi tum unnatojjvala-rasamsva-bhakti-sriyam
harihpurata-sundara-dyuti-kadamba-sandipitah
sadahrdaya-kandaresphura tu vah sacinandanah

This invocation mangalacaran at the very beginning of Caitanya Caritamrita, Krisnadasa Kaviraja Goswami is talking of the karunya, magnanimity of Gauranga. ‘karunaya avtirna kalau’, at the beginning of this age of kali, Gauranga appeared and he says, He is appearing after long time. ‘carim cirat avatirnah’ that meant, I think we mentioned one day, that after one kalpa, one day of Brahma which is a long time, Gauranga has appeared again and what does He do as He appears, ‘samarpayitum unnatojjaval rasam’ and He distributes, in fact He relishes madhurya rasa, sweetest of the mellows and that’s called brilliant rasa the topmost rasa.

So as we hear the pastimes of Lord Gauranga, they are full of madhurya, they are full of sweetness. The sweetest thing in the existence is Mahaprabhu’s madhuryalila,

Gauranger madhurlila jara karne pravesila hrdaynirmal bhelo tara

So that is Gauranger madhurlila. It cleanses the heart, the consiouness and there is the cooling effect of that lila, cooling effect on the mind and the heart. In fact the soul, ultimately the soul is in the heart. So as the soul hears, who hears? Whatever you are hearing, you are doing some kirtan, you are doing sravanam, you are hearing. So who is the hearer, not the ears, they are just a medium. They are in between you, the soul and the speaker. So soul or atma is the actual hearer of this katha. As one hears katha of Gauranga Mahaprabhu,

Sadahrdaya-kandaresphura tu vah sacinandanah

And that Sachinandana, within the heart and heart is described here as hrdaya-kandara. Hrdaya is heart and kandara is a cave. So, we reside, the soul resides in the cave called heart. So Krsnadasa Kaviraja Goswami this is his, he is wishing mangalya, all auspiciousness for the listeners.
So, Gauranga Mahaprabhu He is only solace and shelter specially difficult trouble time like this. It’s time to take shelter of Gauranga. So, we also pray on behalf of Krsnadasa Kaviraja. Let that effect, desirable effect of katha, this Gaur Bhagavan katha Gauranga Nityanandaa katha may sphuratu vah sachinandanah. That Gauranga inspire you, delight you, make you happy, full of bliss, the ananda that we are looking for.

So as Lord is non different from His pastimes. So as we recite His pastimes, as we speak His pastimes, as we hear His pastimes then as we remember the pastimes, Lord is even appearing in that particular lila that is being spoken and is being heard. So, it is expected that we feel the presence of Gauranga Mahaprabhu as we hear about Him or hear His pastimes. And as, as we hear with attention, with devotion, with faith, and Lord makes His appearance, He appears to us in our hearts or He appears on something called smriti patala. There is screen in our, in our heart or soul’s consciousness, there is a screen smriti patala and on the screen we begin visualizing Lord’s pastimes. And ultimately in most purified state, we see them literally, scene darsana of lilas which we talk and hear. I was going to say that, that is yoga, we relink, we reestablish our lost relationship with the Lord and there is yoga bhakti yoga. The soul and Supreme soul are connected, they are united, what unites is, the bhakti unites. We say soul is a bhakta and Lord is Bhagavana and the bhakti, the devotional service is sravanam kirtanam connects soul with the Supreme soul atma with paramatma bhagavana. It’s perfection as that union reunion takes place that yoga the link takes place.

So today we, we are thought of talking to you like yesterday we talked about Mahaprabhu, His visit of Vrndavana and H is tour of Vrajamandal Vrndavana. Today we thought of talking about Lord’s travel from one dhama that is Navadvipa to another dhama Jagganath Puri and this takes place as Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu takes sanyasa. He is now twenty-four years old and He is in Navadvipa. So in middle of the night, one night Mahaprabhu and of course He had informed selected five persons about his plans. No one knew only Sachimata knew, Nityananada Prabhu knew and like that.

So middle of the night Gauranga Mahaprabhu gets up and He leaves home for his destination which is Katwa which is some 27 kilometers or so, away on the banks of Ganga. So as Sun rises in the east and normally devotees would come to Nimai’s home to meet Him, to greet Him and later on to go on sankirtan prabhat-pheri, as we, we go on to take darsana of the Lord in the temple. We take darsana of the deity arcavigraha. For the residents of Navadvipa, their murti their vigraha was Gauranga. They didn’t have to go to some other temple other than Yogapitha, the home of Jagganatha Misra and Sachimata and their son Nimai. Of course, Hare Krisna I just want to say that Jagganath Misra wasn’t there as Lord has taken sanyasa and He also had a brother called Visvarupa, He also had taken sanyasa. This was a second person of the family taking sanyasa, second son of Sachimata.
Next morning everyone arrives to meet and greet Gauranga but He is nowhere to be found. They saw Sachimata just sitting very morose and shading tears and saying nothing. After a while all those who had come to visit Nimai, they realized what have transpired during middle of the night that Nimai had left home for good to take sanyasa.

So as they realized they were all broken hearted and Hari Hari, they all start crying and calling out, Gauranga!!Gauranga!!Nimai!! where are you? They also crying and falling on the ground and rolling and tears and what not. Whole scene was there. They were also saying, “yes, let’s go to home, our respective homes, let’s put our homes on fire and let’s go. Why should we stay here in this village or town, Mayapur, where there is no Gauranga here.”Such was the affection of all residents of Navadvipa, of Mayapur.

When Sachimata, she had some clue in which direction He hadgone. So she begins running in that direction. Soon she comes on the bank of Ganga. There was a small small village. And she was inquiring from the residents, “Have you seen my Nimai?” They did not know what to say. They were just speechless, clueless. So she was approaching this person, that person, “Have you seen my Nimai? Have you seen my Nimai?”As there was no response from nobody there, Sachimata declared, ”You all residents of this village, you are heartless, you are nirdaya, you have no daya.”Even these days, even to this day you could visit that village not far from Navadvipa, not far from Mayapur and it is called Niday in Bengali, Bengalis say niday, it’s nirday, niday. So that village was named after, named Nirday because Sachimata thought that these are heartless people.

So disappointed as she was she returns from. So by this time CaitanyaMahaprabhu had reached Katwa and those who are, they were informed by Mahaprabhu about His plan for taking sanyasa they also had arrived. Nityanandaa and three others, Candrasekhara, Mukunda. So as Nimai or Visvambhara, Sachinandan approached the acarya and begged from him, “Please”, Keshav Bharti was, Kesavabharti was his name, “Please make me free, please liberate me. I want to take sanyasa.” So initially he was not ready. Finally, “Ok, I will give you sanyasa.” And so by this time lots of people had gathered in Katwa, huge crowd and this is observed in Caitanya Mahaparabhu’s pastimes that you know people from nowhere villages gathered in big, big numbers. So as He is to be given sanyasa, so first the shaving has to happen. So many barbers have been asked to come and shave.

They were coming and they were trying but they do not wish to shave Mahaprabhu’s golden hair. So they come and go. Finally one barber agreed to finish the task of shave Him up but as he was also attempting his hands were trembling and all those who were in the assembly there, they, “No, no, no,no sanyasa, why take sanyasa? Who has come up with this sanyasa business or this process or vidhi of taking sanyasa? And this person’s mother, old mother at home and young wife, oh, what would happen to them? How would they survive? And also what about the residents of Navadvipa Mayapur.”
And some of them are also residents of Navadvipa or Gaur mandal. There is Navadvipa mandal Gaura mandal, bigger mandal, bigger circle. So somehow barber manage to shave up Gauranga Mahaprabhu. And He goes to Ganga take holy dip, back on the scene with sanyasa robes put tilaka, all that.
Krsnadas Kaviraja Goswami and Vrndavandas Thakur, they described how Mahaprabhu looked extraordinarily beautiful that day as He was taking sanyasa, shaved up and saffron robes and soon he was going to be holding dand and kamandalu in his hand. That was the beauty to be hold.So just before giving, receiving sanyasa mantra, there is sanyasa mantra.

Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, whispers a mantra right into the ear of Keshav Bharati Maharaja (mantra) and He asks, “Is this mantra ok?” Yes, yes this is perfect mantra. “Ok, now you give this mantra to me”. So, Lord has tricked Keshav Bharti. He belongs to impersonal advait school of thought. So Mahaprabhu gave him, Keshav Bharti the mantra, kind of initiated him, made him into vaisnava and said, “Ok, ok, ok, if this ok, mantra, please give me this mantra. So that’s what the Keshav Bharti did said, “Your name is Sri Krisna Caitanya.” Hari Haribol! Haribol! Everyone shouted Haribol! Mahaprabhu,Vishvambhara, Nimai received sanyasa diksa name Sri KrisnaCaitanya.

Now He was going to even exhibit, display more of Caitanya. This is jada and cetana. Jada means dead and cetana means living or lively. So He has received name Sri Krisna Caitanya. That Krsna who is lively Krsna, very ecstatic, very dynamic, enthusiastic, enthusiastic Krsna. So He is Sri Krsna Caitanya. So now as soon as he has taken sanyasa he is free, mukta and immediately He thought of going to Vrndavan. And after this ceremony is over now Caitanya Mahaprabhu along with very selected handful associates, Nityanandaa Prabhu and others they, they departed. Mahaprabhu wants to go Vrndavan but in His ecstasy He has lost the sense of direction. He has to go to the west worldly direction, Katwa or Navadvipa, this is in Bengal, in east India and He has to go to Vrndavan which is to the west.

But He is going round and round not making much progress, He is trying to ask, which way and they are giving some replies. Also, Nityanandaa Prabhu and he has a strategy. Of course, he doesn’t want Mahaprabhu immediately, atleast, not immediately go to Vrndavana. He should meet those broken hearted residents of Navadvipa especially mother Sachi must meet otherwise how could she survive? So, this was the plan of Nityananada Prabhu. So as Mahaprabhu was proceeding and there were some cowherd boys, boys taking care of the cows from nearby village, villager’s boys. So Niytananda Prabhu assured that Mahaprabhu would ask these, these boys which way is Vrndavana? So Nityanandaa Prabhu goes ahead of them. Tells these boys, “You know boys, this mendicant just now coming if he asks you which way to Vrndavana, tell Him this way.” And that way met to the banks of Ganga Yamuna and Shantipur. So that is what happened Mahaprabhu for sure he asks these boys, “Will you please show me the way to Vrndavana?” And boys exactly did as Nityanandaa Prabhu had prompted them.

And then now Gauranga, Sri Krisna Caitanya now and Nityanandaa they arrived to the bank of Ganga and Nityanandaa Prabhu is asking Caitanya Mahaprabhu, “Where do you want to go?” and Mahaprabhu says, to Vrndavana” and Nityanandaa Prabhu says, “You have reached Vrndavana, see this is Jamuna.” When Caitanya Mahaprabhu looked at the bluish waters of the river He thought, “Yes, yes, yes, this is Jamuna. And He jumped into Jamuna, Jamuna maiya ki, He wanted to take holy dip inJamuna and as He was bathing, enjoying swimming in Jamuna. In fact, it was Jamuna also it is explained because in as the river flows through Navadvipa it turns into two rivers again.

The confluence has taken place sangam, at Prayag, Ganga, Jamuna, Saraswati, also here in Navadvipa they again become two rivers, the eastern bank is Ganga and western bank is Jamuna. So the side Nityananda Prabhu and CaitanyaMahaprabhu were on the western bank of the river, so that was Jamuna. So soon,as Mahaprabhu was still taking his Jamuna maiyaki, taking his holy dipin Jamuna He saw Advaitacaryain a boat and He was wondering,“Aye!Advaitacarya and inVrndavanaa?”He was wonderingand then soon Mahaprabhu, Sri KrsinaCaitanyaMahaprabhu realizedthat He was not far from Shantipurand Advaitacarya had come with the boat.

Andthis wasagain strategy made between Advaitacarya and Nityananda Prabhu. Idea was to bring Mahaprabhu to Shantipur and as they arrived with the boat to the other side of the Ganga, arrived in Shantipur, by that time it was also planned. The whole strategy was there. Thousands of, hundreds and thousands of residents of Vrindavana had reached and so was Sachimata brought there to Shantipur. And the great reunion takes place. The separation has taken place. There is viyoga as He had left for.

He left Navadvipa for Katwa to take sanyasa. Now yoga the reunion was happening here. They had gone through vipralamba experience and now it was sambhoga, meeting with the Lord. Sothe meeting between Lord and his dear devotees, dearest of all the devotees, Navadvipa devotees, Sachimata and his very close associates of Navadvipa, Mayapur. We cannot even imagine the happiness they all must have experienced as they united. They got united again, that milanmilanotsav and Mahaprabhu had to, had to stay. They would not going to be happy just meeting for few minutes or just for a day. So Mahaprabhu stayed in Shantipur for several days and they were always extending His stay appealing to Him, “please stay longer, please stay longer in Shantipur.”

So Sachimata as usual as she used to cook for her Nimai in Mayapur she immediately take charge of the kitchen. She has become a head cook of the deity, deity kitchen head cook. Who is deity? Her Nimai is her deity and she wants to cook and she is cooking for Nimai and feeding Him. ForSachimata He is not Sri Krsna Caitanya, He is just Nimai for Sachimata.“Nimai!Nimai!”

And, and those days during the stay of Caitanya Mahaprabhu at Shantipur there were performances of great kirtans. Kirtan,“mahaprabhau kirtan nrtya-gitavaditra-madyanmanso-rasen”. It’s Mahaprabhu’s kirtan and nrtya and udandanrtya.

He would jump high.

ajanu lambit bhujo kanakavdatau sankirtanai kapitarau kamalayatakso

Just Lord golden bodied Lord long arms, kasturitilakam, nice tilak and He has also brahmin thread around arunvasana, His sanyasa robes and He is dancing, He dancing up high and falling, crashing down to landing to the ground and when that landing, crashing would happen for Sachimata, it was heartbreaking experience.“No!No!”She would think, “my Nimai must be getting hurt so much.” So Sachimata has prayed those days or maybe she prayed once and for all the time to mother earth, “My dear mother earth, whenever whenever and wherever my Nimai falls, comes down heavily and gets dropped please make sure He is not hurt. Take him in your lap.”So these are the feeling emotion bhava, vatsalya rasa of Sachimata and then finally.
So there is, one day Sachimata and Nimai are meeting and as Sachimata, she has found out that Nimai is planning to go to Vrndavana and she doesn’t want this to happen. So she sat down with Nimai and make a very special appeal, “Why Vrndavana? It’s very far.”Of course she also says, “The best thing would be that you come back home to Mayapur.” But then Sachimata is thinking and also said, “But then people also would criticize you, you are sanyasi and you have come back to your family and that criticism would hurt me.

So, you can’t come. I know you can’t come and you should not come to home. But why not at least stay nearby dham Jagannath Puri and if you stay there, I will get some news about you. Devotees coming going to Puri, returning would get the news.”So Caitanya Mahaprabhu says, “Tathastu mother! Your wish is my command. Yes, I will stay in Jagannath Puri.”

And then Mahaprabhu He prepares to leave for Jagannath Puri. Initially everyone, everyone wants to go right behind, right with him to Jagannath Puri. But Mahaprabhu, He fixed up few handful of His associates, Nityananda Prabhu Mukund, Jagadanand Pandit and Damodara Pandit. So Mahaprabhu plus four others were selected allowed to go with Him. So journey now from Shantipur to Jagannath Puri. So they are travelling. This is not air, air travel or rail travel or, they are walking bare feet and throughout the journey Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu is nonstop, as we say akhanda akhanda kirtan, nonstop kirtan, that was Mahaprabhu’s lifestyle. kirtaniyasada Hari, that is what He did. He always chanted and danced. Not walked, or even some kind of walking also was like a dance.

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

He is going from village to village to town to village to town on the way to Jagannath Puri. Those passersby people encountered with Mahaprabhu on the way, Niyananda Prabhu and these party and they are they would get immediately enchanted and attracted and drowned to Mahaprabhu like a magnet. Mahaprabhu was a powerful magnet and they were some kind of iron particles. So people from some distance away as soon as they noticed Mahaprabhu chanting and dancing and His effulgence and His influence, like a magnet has afield, magnetic field depending on the size or the power of the magnet, each magnet has it’s field smaller or bigger field, magnet has a field. So magnet has a influence, surrounding iron particles they get drowned to the magnet. So Mahaprabhu also like a huge big magnet, moving magnet, so all people were getting drowned to him as they came closer and then they would want to go with Him.

But Mahaprabhu not want them to accompany Him. He would appeal to them, “Please stay wherever you are and chant Hare Krisna.

yare dekha, tare kahakrsna-upadesa
amara ajnaya guru hanatara’eidesa

Some instructions like that, “Bolo krsna bhajo krsna karo krsna siksa” and He would give them deep embrace and appeal them to stay behind.
And travelling and travelling the party arrived at Tota Gopinath. They have now crossed the border Bengal border. They have entered Orissa. There is town called Baleswara and near Baleswara is Remuna very famous holyplace. Ksircora Gopinath temple. They have, they were staying overnight there. Of course they had darsana of Gopinath and sure they enjoyed, relished ksira, ksira of Gopinath, Ksirchora Gopinath. So that night as the team was gathered, Caitanya Mahaprabhu recited the pastimes or glories of Madhavendra Puri for whom Gopinath had stolen the ksira and hence He gets the name Ksircora Gopinatha. Before He was only Gopinatha, because He stole the ksira, it’s condensed milk preparation, for His dear devotee Madhavendra Puri, He became known as Ksircora Gopinatha. And Madhavendra Puri was a very great, greatest of all the Gaudiya vaisnavas, in fact he was, he is origin of Gaudiya vaisnavism. He is the first one, Gaudiya vaisnavisam kind of was born, sprouted within, manifested within, his heart. And then he had initiated Isvarapuri and then Isvarapuri had initiated Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Hari Hari!!And this Madhavendra Puri.

Mahaprabhu personally glorified Madhavendra Puri, Madhavendra Puri’s samadhi is also there in Remuna. Then Mahaprabhu and party proceeds. They are heading toward Jagannath Puri. On the way there is big town called Kataka and there is famous temple of Saksi Gopal. So party has stayed there, spent overnight and Nityananda Prabhu was the one to narrate the story of Saksi Gopal, the deity of Gopal that was once upon a time was in Vrndavana. How and why He walked, a deity walked to Kataka to become witness, saksi, the pastime, and Nityananda Prabhu that night he, he took the microphone, he became narrator of glories of Saksi Gopal.

Now they are, party next morning they, they get up and proceed. They passed through Bhuvanesvara Lingaraja. They take darsana the pastimes in Bhuvanesvara also and now Jagannath Puri is some sixty kilometers away and they are hurrying towards Jagannath Puri. On the way as they were taking bath or Caithanya Mahaprabhu was taking bath in one river, Nityananda Prabhu there is inconceivable pastime that’s what happened, Nityananda Prabhu broke danda of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, sanyasa danda and threw in the river. As Mahaprabhu had returned and asked, “Where is my danda? And hearing what had happened Mahaprabhu was very upset and He said, “I cannot travel with you anymore. Either you go first or you stay behind and let me go first ahead of you.”And they said, “Ok you first.”

Mahaprabhu was heading towards, running towards Jagannath Puri temple. There comes a place called Atharanala, one bridge and those days kind of buildings and some skyscrapers we see in Jagannath Puri around Jagannath Puri temple that wasn’t there. So from Atharanala the Jagannath Puri temple, the dome and the chakra and everything would distinctly visible and by seeing that Mahaprabhu became very, very excited and He speeds up and literally runs to Jagannath Puri temple. And finally as He enters in temple, He is in darsana mandapa as He saw Jagganatha and He wanted to say Jagganatha but He couldn’t say. Only He could say was Jag, Jag, Jag and He falls on the temple floor and He lost, gone inside, no external consciousness and this is, luckily that time there was Sarvabhauma Bhattcarya was present. So he arranges Mahaprabhu to be brought to his home and then he does little, not little much of a pariksa, testing and comes to conclusion that this ecstasy, this is genuine, This is not just some Bhava but this is Mahabhava. Hari Hari.

And His pastimes are unlimited and then rest of the party soon comes and they also arrived at Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya’s place and they trying to chant holy name out loud and finally Mahaprabhu gets up and then He stayed there for two months during this visit. And, and then Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya had strongly recommended that whenever He goes for darsana in Jagannath Puri temple He should be all the way behind where these Garuda stambha pillar,Garuda pillar is there in the back. So that is where Mahaprabhu used to stand and take darsana of Jagganatha.
One of my last visit to Jagannath Puri temple as we had gone for darsana of Jagganatha and we had a panda, local panda guide, guiding us.

So he made me also stand next to the Garuda stambha. He held my hand and ask me, “Here do you see some hole marking here? I felt, “Yes, yes.”And he said, “Where you are standing Mahaprabhu used to stand right here and He used to hold pillar with His hands and by the touch of His hand the fingers, the pillar melted and that is, left the marks on the pillar.” When I heard that and when I was taking darsana of Jagganath, oh that was something happened inside.

I was following the footsteps of Caitanya Mahaprabhu taking darsana from the same spot taking darsana of Jagganath swami ki jay!

Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu ki jay!
Jagannath Puri dhama ki jay!
Gaur premanande hari haribol!!

Bal Krishna gives liberation to Putana

Bal Krishna gives liberation to Putana

Krishna Lila Vrndavana Part 5

15 07 2007

Venue: Durban, South Africa

I suppose we are getting there, we started in Ayodhya then we switched over to Vrndavana. Our goal is Gokul dham ki jai! Go for Gokul, go for cows. At night time Krishna would drink milk with some stories then he would go to sleep. This was in Nanda Bhavan. The next morning he had to be woken up. ‘We are leaving here’ they were leaving with Krishna. They were leaving with Krishna in Gokul, baby Krishna – babies have to be woken up or when they are hungry they wake up. Yashoda wakes up Krishna every morning, very gentle. (Sings Bhajan Uthi Uthi Gopala). We have heard this before, it is a long song but we are just..This is the beginning part. ‘Hye lal’ Yashoda is addressing Nanda ke lala [Nand’s Lala, son]. So children, they call them ‘lal, lal, hey lal nanda lal’. So little darling, small, He was a sweet boy, son of Nanda Maharaja, Nanda lal.

They call Krishna ‘lal’ and they call Radharani ‘Ladali, Ladali Lal. If you go to Varsana in Vrndavana you go to the main temple and go to the top there, the deities are called ‘Ladali Lal.’ Ladali Radharani and Lal Sri Krishna, Ladali Lal ki jai! So Nanda Lal., Yashoda dulal, He is also Dulal. Uthi Uthi Gopala, please wake up please wake up. She has to give some reason why he needs to wake up, ‘why should I get up?!’ Then Yashoda says ‘the reason for you to get up is that the sun has already risen in the east – time to get up.’ Arunodaya, Arun the sun, Udaya, ‘the sun is rising in the east it is about to rise O Lal. Please wake up.’

Gopal Krishna Lal ki jai.
‘Krishna Kanaiya Lal ki jai.
Yashoda Maiya ki jai.
Nanda ke Lal ki jai.
Gokul dham ki jai.

We also have to follow the footsteps of Yashoda Maiya.
Yashoda ca maha bhaga, Yashoda is very, very fortunate [SB 10.8.46]

So she could directly wake Krishna up and she continues to do so and this is how we should be thinking. Not that this was five thousand years ago, she used to get up Krishna by singing songs like this one. Krishna’s pastimes are eternal, Vrndavana is not dead, it’s alive, eternal. Everything else in this existence goes back to the dust. It comes from the dust and goes back to the dust, but Vrndavana is not dust.

vrndavanae prakara sadmasu kalpa vriksha
laksavriteshu surabhir abhipalayantam
lakshmi sahasra-shata sambhrama sevyamanam
govindam adi purusham tam aham bhajami [Brahma Samhita 5.29]

Vrndavana is made of Chintamani, different elements and it eternally exists. To this day Krishna’s pastimes are on and to this day every day, every morning Yashoda wakes up Krishna. Certainly Yashoda ca maha bhaga, but we could certainly wake up Krishna, you’d like to wake up Krishna? Yes? Then we have to wake up first. Who would wake you up? Nobody’s going to sing a song for you. In our Brahmachari asram, if you don’t get up they have a bucket of water, from sleeping bag you can go straight to the temple. They would bathe you right there. We have seen this.

Anyway these are some inside stories but I thought you were our own people. So we have to wake up Krishna, Krishna in the temple of our home. Our home is a temple and Krishna is there. You wake Him up, just see how Yashoda is waking Krishna up, she is the best example.

aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa tanayas
tad dhama vrndavanam

Krishna is worshipped as the son of Nanda Maharaja, aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa tanayas. And Vrndavana is also worshipped, Vrndavana is worshipable.
So we could make our homes little Vrndavana dhams and we could have our worship at home, take a little photograph of Radha Radhanath or Nrishma, Gaura Nitai, Pancha Tattva or Sita Ram! Or Vitthala, Panduranga. Wake up the Lord,
Uthishtothishta Govinda trailokyam mangalam kuru [Lord Sri Venkatesa Suprabhatam]

In Balaji and some other temples they would pray to the Lord ‘Uthishta Uthishta – Please wake up please wake up.’

uthishtothishta govinda trailokyam mangalam kuru

‘And you become cause of auspiciousness for the entire universe O Lord, please wake up.’ And there are some prayers are offered in praise of the Lord, or we could simply chant sing

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

If you do not know any other mantra, then just chant this mantra, mantra for all seasons. Makes your life easy.

Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya

yatha dharmadayas cartha
muni-varyanukirtitah
na tatha vasudevasya
mahima hy anuvarnitah [SB 1.5.9]

Translation: Although, great sage, you have very broadly described the four principles beginning with religious performances, you have not described the glories of the Supreme Personality, Vasudeva.

In all the scriptures Vyasdev wrote until now he had described ‘dharma, artha, kama and moksha’ but Narada Muni said, vasudevasya
mahima hy anuvarnitah. Where are the glories of Vasudev in all these Vedas, Itihasas and Puranas that you have complied? Then Srila Vyasadeva compiled yet another scripture that is Srimad Bhagavatam ki jai. It becomes topmost of all the scriptures including Puranas.

purananam idam tatha nimna ganam yatha ganga [S.B 12.13.16]

Of all the rivers Ganga is the topmost.

Vaishnavanaam yatha shambhu. Of all the Vaishnavas, Shambhu Shankar is the topmost Vaishnav.

devanam achyuto yatha and achyuta, Sri Krishna is the topmost among all the God, He is the top.

purananam idam tatha, likewise amongst all the Puranas Srimad Bhagavad is the top. Srimad Bhagavatam is the best Puran

Sri caitanya mahaprabhor matam idam

And this is also the opinion of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

Srimad-bhagavatam puranam amalam [S.B 12.13.18]

Srimad Bhagavatam is Praman, authority, why? Amalam. Because Amal Puran. There is no mal, there is no dirt, no contamination of any kind.

dharma? projjhita kaitavo ‘tra paramo nirmatsara?am satam [S.B 1.1.2]

The kaitava dharma, lower forms of dharma,
karma ka??a, jnana ka??a, kevala vi?era bhanda

This jnana kanda, karma kanda is out, kicked out of Bhagavatam! There is no place in the Bhagavatam and that makes Bhagavatam the topmost Puran, scripture in existence and it helps one achieve pancham purusartha.

prema pum artho mahan srimad bhagavatam pramanam amalam

When one studies Srimad Bhagavatam, Nityam Bhagavata Sevaya, you do seva, service unto Bhagavan and Bhagavatam, Prabhupada translates that as two Bhagavatams. One book Bhagavat and one person Bhagavat, you serve Bhagavatam, hear Bhagavatam, you share or distribute Bhagavatam. If you wish to establish Bhagavata dharma that’s possible, the basis -books are the basis. Which book is the basis of Bhagavad Dharma? Srimad Bhagavatam is the basis of Bhagavad Dharma. We are laying a foundation here of Bhagavad Dharma while getting more seriously study of Bhagavatam. Scrutinizingly as much as possible study Bhagavat, become students of Bhagavat.

Nityam Bhagavata Sevaya, by doing so one achieves prema pumartho mahan. So normally there is talk of only four purusharthas culminating in moksha but here Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is adding a dimension. Pancham Purushartha and what is that? prema pumartho mahan, prema. Love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, nothing in return – na dhanam na janam. What about a little moksha? No.

mama janmani janmanisvare, I don’t mind another birth but one condition I have. In every birth I wish to get ahaituki tvayi, bhakti tvayi unto your lotus feet. I have rendered pure devotional service O Lord. And pure devotion, Srila Prabhupada always, always translates Bhakti as service, not just sitting idle and ‘oh I have a lot of devotion and lots of devotion. I have lots of devotion.’

Show your devotion, translate your devotion in action. That’s Bhakti Yoga and that’s devotional service, not just lip service. Service with our hands, service with our feet, service with all the parts of your body.

hrsikena hrsikesa sevanam bhaktir ucyate (CC Madhya 19.170).

Bhakti is defined as when we are engaged as ourselves – our whole existence.
Hrsikena hrsikesa sevanam bhaktir ucyate – our senses are used in service of the proprietor of the senses. So Lord is not only proprietor of his own senses, the senses which we have, the proprietor of those senses is the Lord, hence He is known as Hrsikesa, Hrishika-Isha. He is the master of our senses so our senses should be serving His senses and that is yoga, Bhakti Yoga and Lord is satisfied and soul would certainly be more than happy, pleased in rendering that kind of service.

That is vyavasthiti that is the best situation, that is the ultimate constitutional position of all the living entities. Grantha Raj Srimad Bhagavatam ki Jai. We will talk something little about Bhagavatam and glories of Bhagavatam. You should all have Bhagavatam, not just big pile of newspapers and all horror stories and crime what-not. You should immediately discard such best thing is to not let them come in your way and make your mind dirty. You just finished cleaning your body and you just had a shower and next thing is you want to dirty your mind, make your mind dirty.

By taking all that garbage in to the mind the mind becomes like a dustbin. All the dirt from all over the planet, as it is shrinking now and becoming a global village and then that Gram Katha of that village, it is all right there on fingertips. You watch, see, smell, touch all those. Nectar is available, Srimad Bhagavad purifies mind, satisfies the soul and that’s the goal. So His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada ki jai! He has kindly shared Bhagavatam with the rest of the world. The only thing Srila Prabhupada carried with him physically is Bhagavatam. There was him, his bead bag and he had a few trunks filled with Bhagavatam, he travelled like that with his Bhagavatam. That was the wealth of Bharat Vasrha he was carrying. He was travelling and his destination was New York which is the capital of this age of Kali Yuga. Capital of Kali Yuga is New York. Prabhupada, his destination was the capital of Kali. And he was travelling with his Bhagavatam, later on they became known as his time bomb- Bhagavatams. They exploded in due course of time they would be exploding.

Why have you come to our country?’ This question was asked to Srila Prabhupada.

It was way back in ‘70’s one reporter asked ‘Why have you come?’ Prabhupada said ‘You also came to our country. And whatever valuables you thought all those items you bought to New York, you looted them. You exploited even the diamond called Kohinoor.’ You heard of that one? ‘Kohinoor ka hira’ [Kohinoor diamond] it’s there on display in the London museum, so many other things. Prabhupada said ‘You know they forgot the most valuable gift of India!’ When Prabhupada said that they immediately said ‘Oh what is that? Which one is that which we left behind?’ He said ‘our ancient India’s culture that you left behind. The treasure in the form of Gita and Bhagavatam you left behind and the gift of the holy name.’

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

These are export quality items, this is India’s treasure. So you ask me why I have come. I have come to deliver these goods to you.’ Free home delivery, so in that gift he not only delivered to Englishmen, but to all the men in this planet. Fourteen times around the world, sharing Bhagavatam, he was a mahabhagavat himself and sharing Srimad Bhagavad as it is, Srimad Bhagavatam ,the holy name. Go Mata ki jai!

The cows and Krishna conscious culture, the beautiful deities, Radha Radhanath is a gift of Srila Prabhupada. Prabhupada gave us the Lord. Some people they left Krishna behind when they came to the west they left Krishna behind but then Krishna caught up with them. Prabhupada bought Krishna with him and then Krishna was available, Radha Govind in New York, Radha Londonisvara in London and Radha Parisisvara in Paris. Rukmini Dwarkadesh in Los Angeles, Sri Pancha Tattva in Hawai, wherever he went he installed beautiful deities of the Lord. Then the beautiful festivals of the Lord, Janmasthami, Ram Navami, Ratha Yatra festival and Tulsi Maharani ki jai!

tulasi krishna preyasi namo namah, so very dear. So Gita, Ganga, Tulsi, Bhagavad.

You may be pleased to hear that forty two years now, ’ISKCON was founded in ’66 so we celebrated forty two years of ISKCON. Forty two years of ISKCON and it has spread in a hundred and sixty countries [Shouts of Haribol!]

Janmasthami was celebrated, Krishna Janmasthami, Krishna’s birth. In a country in which they did not even know who Krsna is. Did you say that this is Krishna? What is that girl doing there?’ They didn’t even know. A little child knows in India that is Krishna so that must be? Next to Krishna who is that? Radha! If that is Rama that must be? Sita. And if that is Narayan then? Lakshmi! From birth they know.

They didn’t know Krishna to begin with. So they’re Krishna’s, they don’t have another God. Everybody’s Krishna’s part and parcel, this is Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s programme. He was Himself a lover of Bhagavatam, talking about Bhagavatam again. He is the Lord but ‘Bhakta avatar’ appeared as a devotee and spread the message of Love and affection in the form of Bhagavatam, not just giving discourses and praising Bhagavatam but hearing Bhagavatam every night. He would spend nights hearing Bhagavatam with Gadadhar Pandit and with other Vaishnavas and associates, He would share Bhagavatam with them, Radha Madhava topics with them. So we are very, very unlimitedly and eternally grateful to Srila Prabhupada for giving us the gift. So many gifts and to begin with the gift of the holy name. ‘Krishna, here’s Krishna, you take Krishna, take Krishna.’

nanda? pathi vaca? saurer na m??eti vicintayan [S.B 10.6.1]

Nanda Maharaja returning from Mathura, he has paid all his taxes and he has met with Vasudeva. Vasudeva has given some hints ‘there could be some troubles in Gokul. You better return, rush back.’And Nanda Maharaja and other residents of Gokul are returning. Nanda? pathi, on the way back home he is thinking ‘the words of Vasudeva can’t go wrong. There could be some difficulties.’ And thinking like this ‘okay difficulties and what to do?’

Harim jagama sara?am, he took shelter of Hari, he started thinking of Hari, praying to Hari. Namaste Narasinmhaya. We pray to Lord Narasimha, pray to a worshipable deity. Well if we do not do so we should, that’s what we should be doing! In need of difficulty don’t call police. You will be in more difficulty, so stop calling police and it is said that you call out,
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

That is his phone number, Krishna’s phone number. It’s the only phone number you need to know. So we take shelter of the Lord.

kamsena prahita ghora putana bala ghatini [S.B 10.6.2]

Sukadeva Goswami continues the narration, Putana, what a horrible person, terrible, causing terror in the hearts and especially making bala ghatini. Killing children was her target, she was specialized in killing children.

na yatra srava?adini rak?o ghnani sva karmasu

Sukadeva Goswami says ‘Wherever Lord is not remembered, Lord’s is not remembered and Lord’s glories are not chanted, there will be trouble all the time.’ In other words to get out of the trouble the solution is

srava?am kirtanam vi??o? smara?am pada sevanam

Think of the Lord, pray to the Lord
Man mana bhava mad-bhakto [B.G 18.65]

We can pray to the Lord and become His devotee, offer Him your obeisance’s and worship Him. Where that is done, then you will stay out of trouble. The ghosts will not come and if you want to get rid of the ghosts then big kirtan in each room. Kirtan should be first done in the mind, not outside, in the mind. Fill up the mind with the glories of the Lord. Nanda-g?he, as she entered Nanda Bhavan, she goes all the way into the interior chambers and there is Krishna on the lap of Yashoda and immediately they mention here how Krishna was like a fire but covered with ashes. She couldn’t see that underneath all what I am seeing here [there is] a fire that could burn and could cause my end.

vibudhya tam balaka marika graham
Lord as He looked He immediately understood who she was and what was her intention. No one informed and no-one else, he knew the one person that was..

He was little Lord, He is the knower of everything; He doesn’t depend on His size. The Lord’s strength, the Lord’s knowledge doesn’t depend on how small. He constantly the same, the Lord, in his Lila. Caracaratma, He describes that He is the soul of cara and acara the moving and non-moving, he is the sole cause of all that.

nimiliteksanah, immediately the Lord closed His eyes. He saw Putana arriving then Yashoda handing him to Putana and then He looks at her and then immediately He closes His eyes. We will be talking in a minute about,

anantam aropayad ankam antakam [SB 10.6.8]

Beautiful, wonderful sweet poetic selection of words here by Sukadeva Goswami. He says ‘Anantam, Sri Krishna is unlimited and she keeps Krishna in her Ankam, lap.’ Lap is called ‘Ankah’ but she doesn’t know that this Ananta is Antakam, who would become the cause of the end of Putana. Antakam – end, death. So Ananta is in Ankah, in the lap of Putana and she is not aware that this person will get her.

Yathoragam, just like a snake, suptam abuddhi rajju dhih. But a less intelligent person may think ‘oh this is just a rope!’ Less intelligent person would think ‘this is just a rope’ and would try to pick up that rope and what would be the outcome of that? So this is what is going to happen to Putana which she is not aware of. She thinks she is very smart but now soon it will be proven who is smarter. So Putana has also closed her eyes.

Srila prabhupada in Krishna book also mentions reasons, there are some additional reasons, Putana, because she is in the dress of a lady but Lord knows she is a Raksasi, she is a demoness. And she is not very straight forward – she is a tricky person and especially a killer of children so that, such kind of Lady’s face he doesn’t want to see so then He closes His eyes.

And then He thinks that ‘soon she will be wanting to feed me, feed me her breast milk and she has also applied poison on her breast. I came to Vrndavana bhumi to eat some butter mixed with some sugar candy and some camphor but now all this poisonous stuff is here.’ This reminds me that when they were churning up the ocean the first thing that emerged was halahal, poison and then Shiva helped out the whole world in drinking poison. He has in his neck place of drinking poison and holding it, Nilakantha blue throat. So Lord closes His eyes and is remembering Lord Shiva ‘please come and clear up this poison and then I will go for the milk [laughter].’

So He has His eyes closed and He thinks ‘I don’t know what kind of milk is raksasi’s milk. Is it regular milk?’ So then you have to drink some bitter medicine or something? What do you do? Medicine is there so you want to close your eyes to drink and then throw a tablet [in your mouth]. ‘So if it is that kind of milk I will have to close my eyes’ so Krishna has another reason for Him to close His eyes. Then He is also thinking ‘If I look at Putana in a merciful way, a merciful glance then she will be cured. If I glance upon her mercifully then she will not die.’ But then He thinks ‘if I open my eyes and show her angry eyes, she will be burnt right away and how could this lila continue?’ So He didn’t want a merciful glance and angry glance so he has closed His eyes.

He also thinks ‘but she has come all this way, maybe some pious credits, maybe some ajnana sukriti.’ If we want to remember something what do we do? Close again our eyes, try to remember. So Krishna wants to go through the history of charts and computer or whatever. The information is stored of all previous activities ‘she has never done anything nice and so she deserves to be here.’ So He is closing His eyes and He is just taking the stock of all her history, all her acts before action. So like that, these are more reasons for Sri Krishna to have his eyes closed.

vara striyam tat prabhaya ca dhar?ite

When Putana was taking care of Krishna, putting on the lap and now she wants to feed the baby, Yashoda and Rohini are watching from a distance and they’re kind of impressed with how they are getting along. Krishna is just lying on her lap and she is fully in her service attitude, so they are just watching from a distance and then finally she tries to feed the poison to Sri Krishna. Krishna has been, He is holding her breast with both of His hands and is trying to drink but ,

pra?ai? samam ga?ham karabhyam bhagavan prapi?ya

He is holding one breast so tightly and trying to take not just the milk out with her poison but the whole life of Putana! Then she really woke up, she gets up and she is two miles tall and Krishna is also up there. ‘Vancha vancha Leave me, leave me!’ She cried ‘give it up, give it up’ then she is trying to throw Krishna away. But He is clinging so tightly there is no way she can get rid of Him and He is drinking and drinking and drinking her life. She is not able to stand, she falls down crushing a big chunk of the forest trees and then,

Viv?tya netre cara?au bhujau muhu?

So now her eyes are now like big eyes and throwing her kicking the hands and feet and struggling with her life and finally she is no more. Haribol!! Everybody said Haribol? Haribol! So you could imagine, you could only have a little imagination of what next? The twelve miles long person fell raising all the dust and all the sounds and especially Krishna was with her and ‘where is Krishna? Where is Krishna? Where is Krishna?’
And everybody’s running around the dust and not being able to see, they must have walked by her body ‘okay your ankles, okay the knees are here, okay your thin waist over here and her breasts’ running twelve mile marathon.

balam ca tasya urasi kri?antam akutobhayam

And finally when they reached where the breasts were, they were surprisingly pleased to see Krishna there. And what does he do? Kri?antam, He was playing.
Akutobhayam, no fear of any kind, fearlessly He was playing there.

gopyas turnam samabhyetya jag?hur jata sambhramah

Radha Radhanath ki jai!
They picked up Krishna from the body, chest, breast from there and immediately they want to make sure there is no influence of any sort of baby Krishna. Bathing Him in

go-mutrena snapayitva, in cow urine, sacred item, purifying and pleasing for the Lord is being used for bathing little baby Krishna. Go rajasarbhakam, when the cows walk so much dust is raised and when that dust is you catch the dust before it settles on the ground. So that dust is what they are using. They are also bathing Krishna with that kind of dust and smearing that all over His body. And they have cow dung, all cow products. Go Mata ki jai! Dear to Krishna so this is their wealth, this is their culture. With the cow dung they are putting different marks like we do with the tilak marks.
Dvadasangesu namabhih – dvadas
Twelve names they are chanting one after another applying the cow dung tilak.

om narayanaya namah, madhavaya namah, govindaya namah, madhusudanaya namah, trivrikramaya, vamanaya, srhidharaya, hrishikaya, padmanabhaya, damodaraya, vasudevaya namah.

Twelve names, twelve places with the tilak. The prayers are going on, the other day we heard Purusha Sukta,

indriya?i hrsikesa?
pra?an naraya?o vatu
svetadvipa-patia cittam
mano yogesvaro vatu [SB 10.6.24]

Translation: May Hrsikesa protect Your senses, and Narayana Your life air. May the master of Svetadvipa protect the core of Your heart, and may Lord Yogesvara protect Your mind.

prsnigarbhas tu te buddhim

Translation: May Lord Prsnigarbha protect Your intelligence, and the Supreme Personality of Godhead Your soul. While You are playing, may Govinda protect You, and while You are sleeping may Madhava protect You.

bhunjanam yajnabhuk patu
sarva-graha-bhaya?karah [SB 10.6.26]

So there were lots of prayers for Krishna to be protected. The concern for Krishna and the protection of Krishna is their prime duty. Soon we will be hearing that Garga Muni, he instructed them that ‘take care of this child, be cautious be careful in looking after Sri Krishna.’ So while they were purifying the body, chanting their mantras and praying to the Lord, there comes Nanda Maharaja ki jai! Nanda Maharaja is entering, so many other residents in Gokula also -they have been to Mathura paying taxes, they are all returning.

So they are all returning. Vilokya putana deham, when they saw Putana’s body there and then they heard all the explanations they said ‘yes, yes. Whatever Vasudeva had said, see? It has all come true.’

He is not ordinary person, He must be some kind of Rishi, this Vasudeva.’ They are saying ‘how did he know?! Whatever he said, exactly you see?’ Kalevaram and so her body was long and they wanted to burn the body so they came with different instruments to cut the body. They bought some axe to cut her body into pieces or where they would get such a big piece of wood to burn? So they are making body into smaller pieces and it’s all piled up on top of each other and the final rights are performed.

And when the body was burning, dhumas caguru saurabha?. There was a nice fragrance everywhere, as if Chandan were being burnt, sandal. Her body was, all the smoke or Aguru, there’s a scent ? Special, we also use in worshipping the deities. But the fragrance is like that but this is all because Krishna blessed this Putana. He killed her and that was a blessing in disguise.

Krishna drank the milk of Putana, Krishna treated Putana as mother, so her whole existence was spiritualized and her purified body as it was being burnt, there was a fragrance all around and with that there are few comments that Sukadeva Goswami..

putana loka bala ghniraksasi rudhirasana
jighamsayapi harayestanam dattvapa sad gatim [S.B 10.6.35]

‘Just see, just see Sri Krishna’s glories that Putana who normally drank blood especially of little children and she also had intention of killing Krishna, but because she treated Krishna as a child and had intention to feed not right thing – poison; but she had this thing of rendering some service, tattva – Lord gave her Sadgati. The Supreme destination was given to this Putana. And the question has been raised

kim puna? sraddhaya bhaktya krsnaya paramatmane [SB 10.6.36]

And her attitude was not even favourable but she rendered some kind of service- or made some kind of presentation that she wanted to serve. When someone- raktas tan mataro yatha someone in proper consciousness following in the footsteps of the ladies in Vrndavana or Yashoda Maiya of Gokula, If Lord is worshipped following in the great footsteps of his devotees then what kind of responses, benedictions you could expect from the Supreme personality of godhead? Something to think about.

And phala stuti, towards the end of many chapters you- what is the benefit?

ya etat putana moksam krsnasyarbhakam adbhutam
srnuyac chraddhaya martyo govinde labhate ratim [S.B 10.6.44]

He does what? Govinde labhate ratim- he hears this chapter is known as ‘Putana Moksam’ Putana was liberated so this pastime of Krishna killing Putana, those who hear this with the shraddhaya (faith), the benefit is labhate rati. You will develop attachment. And attraction for Govinda – Haribol!

It is most purifying although you have to deal with bloody scenes. You’ve heard of ‘five days of nectar’ and thinking ‘this is not nectar!’ But the result is nectarian.

So Putana- So Krishna is six days old that day, the special festival, they took opportunity to take part and everyone is in festive mood and the first demon Krishna has killed is demoness, woman so I was just remembering that Sri Ram also killed demon. First demon He killed was Tadaka, yes Tadaka.

Also it all started with a woman killing demoness inauguration. So there’s so many demons – this is Svahah, Putana Svahah. Then another one, Shaktasura Svahah and whirlwind demon Svahah, they are coming one after the other and each one taking different different forms. They are all sent, dispatched, assigned all these duties by Kamsa. Dhenukasura would be coming in the form of Ass then there would be Baksura coming as a big duck, crane and Vatsasura would come, a demon would take form of a calf and mix with other calves and Krishna catches hold of his hind legs and whirls and throws him.

And each time there’s a –Pralambasura would be coming, Pralambasura, lamba means long demon, he was killed – Balaram killed him. Dhenukasura and Pralambasura they were killed by Balaram. Then one would come as Vrashabhasu, one demon would come and take a form of a bull, Kesi would come and he would take a form as a horse.
There would be Vyomasura, always residing in the sky, he lands and he tries to steal Krishna’s friends. There were all these personalities who were making some kind of offering unto the Lord and they are sent getting one way tickets, huh? One way traffic, they only go they don’t come back.

paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam
dharma samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge

So Kamsa in fact he had travelled all over the planet and all over the world and he was very powerful and he had defeated all these demons in different countries and planets and that is mother earth, we heard other day – first day. She was feeling burdened because of the presence of these demoniac kings and rulers and demons. So Kamsa had kind of gone all around picking up all these demons. He would defeat them and make them his associates, some kind of his colleagues and servants.

So when would return and go and bring with him, then he would go another time so he had a big stock of demons making Krishna’s job much easier, right? So he would make Krishna’s job much easier. He doesn’t have to go door to door every town and every village looking for demons. They all have been gathered and they have been sent ‘okay you go and now it’s your turn today.’ And Krishna’s purpose, he has appeared to – and he likes to give good fight also, likes to fight. Not only play flute, he likes fighting as well.

He has a wrestling spirit and he does most of it, in Vrndavana He does killing by Himself, all the cowherd boys are scared and they climb up the trees and they watch the scene from there. And when everything is over they say ‘O Haribol Haribol!’ Of course demigods come every time because they knew all these demons are harassing and so they would come showering flowers, playing their instruments and singing and dancing, every time this kind of gets repeated.

Sukadeva Goswami talks of Devatas coming and this putana and other demons their previous lives have been recorded, who they were in their previous lives. Very interesting study, so Putana was Bali Maharaja’s sister, or daughter – both references they find. Although Bali Maharaj is one of the Dvadas Bhagavatas [twelve Mahajanas] -Balir vaiyasakir vayam. So he was performing big sacrifice and Vamandeva, Lord Vaman arrives at the scene. Vaman dwarf in the dress of a Brahmacari holding Kamandalu and umbrella, ornaments and beautiful features.

As he was arriving, Ratnamala the daughter or sister of Bali Maharaj, she was captivated by the beauty of this child. So charming, she was thinking ‘I wish I could have a son like this boy, I wish I could have a son like you.’ So Lord had taken note of this, this lady has expressed an intense desire to have a son like me.

‘There is no-one like me, there’s just me [laughter] so I have to appear. I have to give her an opportunity to be my mother.’

So that desire was fulfilled, Krishna here came as son of Vasudeva and Devaki. Prishnigarbha first time and then Vaman second time and Krishna third so three times Vasudeva and Devaki had Lord as their son and when the Lord appeared as Vamandeva, this lady had a desire and she had to wait for Krishna to appear as Sri Krishna and then here she goes.

For a few moments at least she made that role of Krishna being her child but later on in that pastime as Vamandev arrives and Bali Maharaj is so charitable, wants to give charity, ‘yes Brahmacari what could we give you?’

‘Oh just three steps of land.’ ‘Oh that’s all? You are insulting me, I am proprietor of the whole universe! Just three steps of land? No no no.’ So we don’t need to go through the whole pastime and story, so ‘okay go ahead, three step.’ And then Vaman becomes Trivrikram, this short person he grows up and up and up. He was so tall now – he had asked for three steps.

So he is going to take the three steps, He took one step and half of the universe was covered. Then one more and okay one more, another step – narakam (the lower planets).

There’s no more property anywhere is left. ‘You promised me three steps! Third step please- where should we keep the it?’ And Bali Maharaj said ‘now I have only my head at my disposal, you may put your foot on my head.’

And with that he surrendered everything and he took everything from Bali Maharaj and Bali Maharaj also was tied up and here Ratnamala, the sister or daughter of Bali Maharaja also was watching this scene. ‘Oh I thought he was such a nice, sweet boy. He looked sweet but look how he behaved, how he has treated Bali Maharaj. I would like to give him poison- kill him and finish him.’

That was the second thought she had and the first one ‘could I have him as a child?’ And then Krishna becomes her child and then the second thought ‘oh i would kill him!’

And also she had that opportunity to try to kill Krishna. So by hearing killing pastimes- Krishna killing this demon and that demon- the tendency a lot of times is to go for nectar and avoid all those bloody scenes, go for nectar. And of course some of them skip everything and go all the way to rasa lila nectar. His killing pastimes have been so interspersed throughout Bhagvatam, they have purpose why they are there. These pastimes should not be skipped or jumped or – one should read those pastimes, purifying. What happens is the – each demon has a special identity – in a bad way, a bad quality.

Each represents one or few of the anarthas- someone lusty or some angry, some greedy or this or that. And by hearing those pastimes we also become free from that bad quality which that demon represented.

Sri Narasimha Caturdasi

Sri Narasimha Caturdasi

Please pray to Lord Narasimhadev that He may destroy the demoniac propensities within us which are there to a small or large degree. Lust is our enemy. We are our own enemies. This is an important day. The day will be 12 hours long only. But its greatness is important. We are observing various festivals in the last few days such as Sita Navami and Rukmini Dvadasi. So today we have one more important day of Caturdasi.

A long, long time ago it was Caturdasi. We offer our obeisances to Lord Narasimha. Lord became Narahari. We daily offer this prayer where Prabhupada was making all Deity standards. Srila Prabhupada introduced this arati and Narasimha Pranam. No one was singing arati of Lord Narasimhadev. Srila Prabhupada inspired all of us to pray.

We should say completely prahalada alhada dayine. How else is He? hiranyakasipur vakshah – He tore the chest and stomach of Hiranyakasipu. These things are not new, but we don’t sing understanding its meaning. Alaya means collection. Dukhalaya Sukhalaya Devalaya. Nakhalaya – means nails are prominent in it.

ito narasimha parato narasimha – I’m not giving an Uccharan seminar. Lord is here and Lord is there. We should take care of the rules of grammar. Wherever I go may Lord Narasimha be there! This is the same as a prayer in which we say jagannatha swami nayana pathagami bhavatu me. Hiranyakasipu asked, “Where is your Lord? In this pillar?” Prahlada Maharaja replied, “Yes, my Lord is in this pillar.” We should get up with conviction on such a day. If we don’t get up on days like this then when will we get up? Such Narasimhadev who is adipurusa, whose nails are very sharp. They are just like the peak of a mountain. There are various kinds of bees. Few bite and a few are poisonous. You have killed wicked Hiranyakasipu just like that. Our dealing with a mosquito is just like that.

See one fly came over there. Hiranyakasipu has been compared to a fly and the Lord is very great. He was not supposed to use weapons. Narasimhadev is famous for his teeth and nails. Sukadev Goswami is telling us that the form of the Lord frightened everyone. We have more fear of a lion than any other animal. Lions are the most fearsome. Narasimhadev became very ferocious.

matta? paratara? n?nyat kiñchid asti dhanañjaya
mayi sarvam ida? prota? s?tre ma?i-ga?? iva

Translation
There is nothing higher than Myself, Oh Arjun. Everything rests in Me, as beads strung on a thread. [BG7.7]

When the Lord becomes ferocious then no one can be more terrifying than Him. The Lord becomes a lion. ‘When someone makes an offence at the feet of any of My devotees then I become Narasimha and teach that offender a lesson.’ Seeing this Hiranyakasipu’s dhoti would have turned yellow. When does a dhoti become yellow? When one urinates. There is one Purana named Narasimha Purana. In Srimad-Bhagvatam 7th canto the Lord’s pastimes have been explained.

There are three kinds of offences – body, words, mind. One can slap someone with the help of the body. What to say of mental offences? munijana manasa hansa Sukadev Goswami says this. First we think then we say and then we act. This is not a sleeping session. Haribol! Offenders beware!

Narasimhadev took that action of destroying demons. The place of pride is always at the bottom. Those who feel pride end up at the bottom. The Lord doesn’t tolerate pride. What do you think? The Lord was not tolerating it in those days and He is tolerating it these days. No, the Lord has His own ways to deal with offenders.

satyam vidhatum nija bhritya bhashitam

To reveal that form of Himself the Lord appeared. Sridhar Swami has given his commentary on this verse. Caitanya Mahaprabhu was very pleased with this commentary. Prahlada Maharaja had said that My Lord is everywhere. To make the statement made by Prahlada Maharaja true the Lord appeared over there. Is there any proof that the Lord is everywhere? Is He in the pillar? He is within you also. The Lord appeared from that pillar. The Lord thought, “Let Me appear from that pillar.” Isn’t this a wonderful appearance? Has anyone taken birth from a pillar?

janma karma cha me divyam eva? yo vetti tattvata?
tyaktv? deha? punar janma naiti m?m eti so ’rjuna

Translation
Those who understand the divine nature of my birth and activities, O Arjun, upon leaving the body, do not have to take birth again, but come to my eternal abode. [BG 4.9]

The Lord’s birth is transcendental. He took birth from Lord Brahma’s sneeze. He doesn’t have to take birth like ordinary living entities.

This is one thing. Hiranyakasipu had asked to be immortal for all the time. Lord Brahma had said that he was not immortal even though he have a long life. Then Hiranyakasipu asked, “May I never be killed by any astra sastra during the night or day.” May I not die by a virus? He thought of all the ways by which people have died. May I not die inside or outside? To make all these benedictions true, the Lord appeared. He said he shouldn’t die during the day or night. He hadn’t said that may he never get killed in between the day and night. The Lord said, “I have nails.” He made him lie on His lap. Then the Lord tore the belly of wicked Hiranyakasipu. Why was the Lord angry? Remember this reason. It was against the person who offended His devotee. Hiranyakasipu also looked like a demon. Nowadays gentleman wear suits and ties. They might be dressed like gentleman, but might not be gentlemen from within.

Taking into consideration all the benedictions of Lord Brahma, the Lord killed Hiranyakasipu.

I was saying that all incidents which are there such as Sita Navami, Rukmini Dvadasi are all an Itihaas. All these pastimes took place. The Lord appeared on day of Caturdasi at Ahobilam in Andhra Pradesh. What’s there in an Itihaas or History? Place and time have been mentioned. In grammar it’s called saptami.

Which place, at what time and which person did what? This is called an Itihaas.

dh?itar??htra uv?cha

Translation
Dhritarashtra said: O Sanjay, after gathering on the holy field of Kurukshetra, and desiring to fight, what did my sons and the sons of Pandu do?[BG 1.1]

Mahabharata is an Itihaas. These are all facts. Mythology is one thing and Itihaas is another thing. We devotees should understand that whatever is written in Srimad Bhagvatam is an Itihaas. So many personalities were there in Mahabharata and everyone has their own attributes. Can anyone think and write this? Everyone has their own attributes. In Caitanya-caritamrta also there are millions of characters. Everyone’s details such as birth, parents can be explained. Then there is the description of Vaikuntha also. What happened in Vaikuntha? The four Kumaras are there who are the sons of Lord Brahma. They went to Vaikuntha and were stopped by the gatekeepers. Then they became angry and cursed them. It’s been described that the Lord came walking along with Garuda. Lord said that these gatekeepers couldn’t understand who the visitors were. He said to the gatekeepers, “You may become demons for three births or you may take birth 7 times in the association of devotees.” In Satya-yuga Jaya Vijaya became Hiranyaksa and Hiranyakasipu. It was a condition that the Lord will liberate them by killing them. This was also nija bhrtya bhashitum. The Lord is showing that He is killing Hiranyakasipu and at the same time also liberating Hiranyakasipu.

Lord had said in Bhagavad-Gita that na me bhakta pranashyati- “Kaunteya I take a vow that My devotee will never perish.”

To protect this vow the Lord has appeared. The Lord proved this by appearing in the form of Narasimhadev. This has been explained by Sridhar Swami in his commentary.

Today’s Narasimha Caturdasi celebrations carry a special meaning. Coronavirus has created situations and the whole mankind has become afflicted because of it. Today is the appearance day of Narasimhadev and we offer prayers at the feet of Lord Narasimha. Worshipping Lord Narasimhadev is important.

What does the Lord do by appearing as Narasimha? Sometimes we have to offer prayers at the feet of Narasimha for the good of health of Srila Prabhupada, for protection of the movement of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. The Lord is protecting and reaching everyone through prasada. We are locked down. We can’t get out. Few people were passing by Pandharpur and they contacted ISKCON Pandharpur as diseased persons are hungry. Then Mohan Rupa Prabhu and one more devotee delivered the prasada. So much kirtana is going on. This has not taken place. Everywhere kirtana melas are going on. 5 pm kirtana is there. So the Lord’s mercy is reaching all through prasada, books and kirtana.

anya dharman tiraskrtya mahotsavan puraskrtya By means of festivals bhakti is being spread. This is the mercy of Srila Prabhupada. I started to say in the morning that Narasimhadev who is appearing today is Ugra-Narasimha. Take darsana of Ugra-Narasimha. We have Hiranyakasipu within us. For those who like sona there are 2 kinds of sona – one is gold and another is sleeping. Let that Hiranyakasipu within us get frightened and be killed. One time HH Radhanath Maharaja was saying that the Lord becomes the enemy of the devotee’s enemy. He takes a ferocious form when He becomes the enemy of our enemy. He becomes the death of death which kills us.

Narsimhadev Caturdasi Mahotsav ki Jai!

Mohini Ekadashi Bhu Vaikuntha Pandharpur

Bhu-vaikuntha Pandharpur!

We will sing one of the abhangas of Tukarama Maharaja. It is a famous abhanga and is especially sung on every Ekadasi all over Maharashtra. It is not an exaggeration that it is the most favourite of all. In this abhanga Panduranga, who has many names is described. There is Vitthala Sahasranama like Visnu SahasranamaIt can also be called a Pandurangastakam. I have mentioned all these things in my book Bhu-vaikuntha Pandharpur, which I have written many years back. This is like an advertisement. The first chapter is about the glories of Pandharpur dhama. This book has become very popular. It has been reprinted eight times already, 5000 copies each time. It has been translated now in Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and English. Whichever language you know you can read it in. In this also Vitthala Sahasranama has been mentioned. Tukarama Maharaja mentions the sweetness and beauty of the transcendental form of Lord Vitthala.

sundar the dhyana ubhe vitevari

Translation
The Lord is very beautiful, and He is standing on a veet ( brick) . Because He stands on a veet, He is named Vitthala.

There is a history of this also as to why He stands on a brick and how He stands?

Kar katavari thevoniya

Translation
He has kept His hands on His waist.

This signifies that He is waiting for somebody. That somebody can be you also.

Tulasi har gala kase pitambar

Translation
He is wearing a garland of fresh Tulasi and pitambar, bright yellow ( dhoti).

The Lord wears a garland of Tulsi and manjaris around his neck. There are a lot of glories of Tulasi offerings in Pandharpur. So many Tulasi leaves and garlands and manjaris are offered to Lord Vitthala over here. Hardly anywhere else so much Tulasi gets offered to the Lord. Tulasi Krsna preyasi namo namaha. Lord likes Tulasi so much that He wears her around His neck and also on His lotus feet. The devotees over there dress Him in pitambar when they decorate the Lord.

makar kundale talapati sravani kanthi kaustubh mani virajit

He wears fish shaped earrings – makar. When the Lord moves around, the shine of these effulgent kundal spreads on His face and enhances the beauty of His face.

kanthi kaustubh mani virajit

Lord wears a Kaustubh Mani around His neck.

In 1984 while on Padayatra we came from Dvaraka to Pandharpur. I have started a story again. Do you all like stories? Lord Vitthala also came from Dvaraka in His chariot. We arrived here walking, doing padayatra. When we reached here, we were a group of around 200 – 300 devotees, including many foreign devotees. At that time the pujari welcomed all of us in Pandharpur Dhama and we were blessed to do not only pad-praksalan, but sarvanga maha-abhishek of Vitthala, All of us participated, including some African Negros. Here nobody is differentiated on the basis of country – foreigner, black or white. Here everyone is allowed in the temple, unlike temples of South India, where only Hindus are allowed. Everyone is welcomed here. All of us did maha abhishek.

That time the head priest gave us darsana of all the details on the sarvanga vigraha of the Lord. They showed us the sign of Bhrugu Muni’s feet on the Lord’s chest. Once Bhrugu Muni was testing Brahma, Shiva and Visnu to see who was the most tolerant and forgiving as that would mean that one would be supreme. He came and kicked the Lord on His chest. Lord Visnu or Krsna passed the examination and Shiva and Brahma failed. Then he broadcasted the result of his examination to the other sages on earth. Lord Visnu had passed the test. Devotees of the Lord kick the Lord with their feet on His chest, not on His back. The Lord’s chest gets imprinted with the sign of Bhrugu Muni’s feet. The Lord preserved it, as He thought that His form was purified due to the touch of the feet of His devotee. The Lord could have removed the sign of that kick by doing some plastic surgery. It was easy fro Him to remove it, but He preserved it forever, till today. We viewed that on the Vitthala Deity that time.

Tukarama Maharaja explained that his happiness lies only in one thing. pahin sri mukh aavadine, Pahin – I will see the face and nabhi and chest and lotus feet of the Lord. I want to keep seeing this. All my happiness lies in this. He mentions that he desires to keep taking darsana forever. Such teachings have been given to us by our acaryas. All glories to Sant Tukarama! He has composed 4000 abhangas. When he was filled with bhava for Lord Vitthala, these abhangas used to sprout in his heart, and someone else wrote them after listening to them. While moving around, he composed Abhangas spontaneously.

Translation
He opens my darkened eyes and fills my heart with transcendental knowledge. He is my Lord birth after birth. From him ecstatic prema emanates; by him ignorance is destroyed. The Vedic scriptures sing of his character. (Guru-Vandana , verse 3 , from Prem-Bhakti Chandrika by Narottam Das Thakur)

This famous abhanga is specially sung on Ekadasi. Tukarama Maharaj’s abhangas have reached all over. Sarvatra prachar hoibe more nama. During my childhood. they would sing the abhangas of Tukarama Maharaja whole night long in all the villages. I attended such kirtanas. Someone played the harmonium which I liked. From that time I started liking the harmonium and then slowly became addicted to it. We have a Vitthala Deity over here. Tukarama Maharaja writes,

Govind Govind Mana lagaluya Chand
Govind the Kaya Bhed nahi Deva taya

For Tukarama Maharaja and for everyone, Vitthala is Govind or Krsna. He is Dvarakadhish over here in one sense as He arrived here from Dwaraka. He is Dvarakadhish as well as Govinda, Kanhaiya Lal ki Jaya! Pandharpur is here and Gopalpur is also there. Lord of Pandharpur is Dvarakadish Vitthala, Krsna, Govind! He is makhanchor also. Abhishek is offered to Him. You did kirtan and now are doing sravana. You can’t do kirtana if you haven’t done sravana. For doing kirtana, first you need to do sravana.

Vitthala Deity is the Lord. That way all Deities are the Lord appearing in the form of the Deity. Radha-Pandharinath ki Jaya! Radha-Pandharinath appeared, This Deity was carved in Jaipur and then installation Pran-prathistha was done. So many great devotees had arrived. In presence of all pran-prathistha was done. Radhanath Maharaja, Deena-Bandu Prabhu, Radharaman Maharaja, Yasodadulal Prabhu from New Zealand had come. Pran-prathistha mahotsav was celebrated in the presence of all these Vaisnavas. When Pran-prathistha is done ‘prana’ appears in the vigraha. The Lord enters in the Deity. Acaryas request the Lord to kindly appear in that Deity. After that is done worship starts. But such a thing didn’t happen in the case of the Vitthala Deity. There was no Pran-prathistha needed. When the Lord’s manifest pastimes were taking place in Dvaraka He had to come to Pandharpur. The Lord came to Dindirvan on the banks of River Chandrabhaga. Manini Rukmini maiya had reached there. Radharani is also famous for her Maan-Lila. Rukmini can also exhibit maan. Sita or Kaikeyi would also get angry. When queens got angry , they went into in krodhbhavan. That was the indication that there is some problem.

Rukmini also got angry. Radharani and the Gopis had reached Dvaraka. The Lord had said that He would come soon, but He didn’t return. Instead of returning to Vrindavan from Mathura He went ahead to Dvaraka. Nearly 80 years had passed by but He didn’t return. He had said He will return soon. Anyway, I have started with other story.

Here there is Gopi-talav where the Lord enjoyed His pastime with the Gopis like in Vrindavan. He didn’t remain Dvarakadhish but became Vrindavan Krsna. Purna Purushottam! Dvaraka Krsna is Purna, in Mathura He is Purnatara and in Vrindavan purnatam. It’s a matter of good, better, best. Dvaraka Krsna becoming Purnatam with the Gopis, in Rasa Lila etc.

Parakiya bhave jaha vrajete prachar

He exhibited parakiya bhava. Rukmini and the others queens saw such deep loving exchanges between the Gopis and Krsna. Which wife can tolerate this? “Look at my husband! How He is exchanging love with them. Who knows from where these ladies have come. He never showed this kind of love to us, never have been so close to us. Never lets us sleep in His lap. But with these ladies He is having all such exchanges.” Rukmini got very angry and without going to krodhbhavan she came to her Father’s house. Dvaraka is sasural of Rukmini. If there is some spouse abuse or strain in the relation with husbands, wives go to their fathers’ house. For Rukmini Maharashtra is her father’s place. Rukmini came to Pandharpur. She should have gone to Kaundinyapur in between Amravati and Vardha, where she was born. The Lord came in search of her the way Rama was searching for Sita. Rukmini! Rukmini! Then He came to Pandharpur and Dindirvan on the banks of Chandrabhaga. Chandrabhaga is non different from Ganga. This is also the glory of this place.

bhima aani chandrabhaga tyzya charanichya ganga

This river is also known as Bhima. On the top of Sahyandri at a place called Bhimashankar is the origin of Chandrabhaga. In Himalaya, Shiva held Ganga in his matted hair. That same pastime took place here also. From the matted hair of Shiva Chandrabhaga appeared here again.

mahayog pithe tate bhim rathya

When Sankaracarya arrived here he composed the Pandurangastakam. In the first line he called this Dhama Yoga-pith. In Mayapur also there is one Yoga-pith . In Vrindavan also there is a Yoga-pith Radha-Govind temple is Yoga-pith of Vrindavan. Vitthala-Rukmini temple is Yoga-pith of Pandharpur. Sankaracarya wrote, mahayoga pihe tate bhimrathya

One more name of River Chandrabhaga is mentioned here as Bhimarathi. At many places in the Bhagavatam pious rivers are mentioned, in which Bhimarathi is mentioned. Godavari is also mentioned.

Rukmini met Dvarakadhish over here. He tried to console her. In the first round of talks some things were resolved. Then He left from there.

Then He went to give darsana to Pundalik. He had promised Pundarik in his previous birth to give him darsana. The Lord went to give him darsana. Pundalik said that he was busy serving his parents and threw a veet ( brick) towards the Lord to stand on it. This was not an ordinary brick from a factory. Once Indra was cursed to be a brick. Indra keeps getting such curses in the same way Ahalya had become a stone as we heard yesterday. When the Lord stood on this veet, Indra was delivered. Pundalik met Vitthala and then offered prayers and his special request was, ‘I am blessed to have Your darsana.’ aham anugrahitosmi.’ as is expressed in Sanskrit. Pundalik said, “You have given me darsana, but in future many devotees will come here.” As this Dhama is not new. It was not created, it is Bhu-vaikuntha. I have named my book also Bhu-vaikuntha – Vaikuntha on the Earth. Is Vaikuntha created anytime? Is there any time when Vaikuntha doesn’t exist? It is eternal. When the earth was not existing, Maharashtra was also not existing and Sangli district was also not existing. Jevaha navate charachar (when nothing moving or non moving was existing) When the whole of this world was not there, at that time Pandharpur was there and it will remain even after the annihilation of the universe.

Pandharpur is an eternal dhama, beyond creation and annihilation of these material universes. “If you stay here, then in future devotees who will come here will be benefited. You have showered your mercy on me, but there will be devotees, varkaris, pilgrims coming from all over world.. From Uttar Pradesh, from which place are you? Chattisgad, Karnatak.Haryana, etc. Hari came there and so we get the name Harayana. The Lord gave a benediction Tathastu! Tatha astu. ‘Let that happen which is your desire’. And it happened also. What happened? The Lord who had come from Dvaraka stayed here only.

Kar katavari thevoniya

Earlier He was waiting for Pundalik to become free. “When he will come to greet Me? When will he come and touch My feet?” Here devotees were not satisfied by only touching the feet of the Lord. 150 years back when pilgrims came, He gave darsana to each person one at a time. Not that 1000 people at a time and then the next batch. One at a time , face to face. He is so personal. They would embrace the Deity of Vitthala.

Tuka mhane aali na urechi vegali

Tukarama Maharaja has experienced this and then expressed it in his abhangas –
“When will You embrace Your devotee deeply” then, na urechi vegali – “What more does that devotee need?” Embrace means you have given yourself to the Lord. Darsana can be done from a distance also. Oh! Keep your distance. Even the Lord doesn’t like to give darsana from a distance. No! Let them come! Other places you may get to touch the feet of the Lord. Other places there is only darsana of the feet of the Lord once a year. Last week on the day of Akshay-Tritiya we got Caran darsana of Banke-bihari which happens once a year. But here , you not only get darsana of the feet, or touch the feet, but one gets to embrace and touch the whole body of the Lord. This was a custom at one time over here. But times have changed. Kaliyuga has arrived. Now people have changed. One can’t say who will come with what intensions. There was some such experience, and so they stopped this embracing of the Deity by pilgrims. Now no one can do that. Point to note is that the Vitthala Deity was not carved by someone in Jaipur or by local artists of Pandharpur who carved deities. Vitthala Deity was never carved by someone. There was no Pran-prathistha. He came from Dvaraka and stayed here in this form. In one form He returned to Dvaraka. But in another form He appeared here.

That is what Tukarama Maharaja says in many of his abhangas. If someone even thinks that someone carved this Deity with carving instruments ( chinni and hathoda) and then did pran-prathistha, beware! One who holds such an understanding, his mouth will get filled not with Rasgulla but with worms from the gutter. It is a big offence at the feet of Vitthala Bhagavan. Such are the special glories and fame of Pandharinatha, Vitthala Bhagavan. This is advitiya glories! The one and only like it. No one else could have that.

What can I say about the glories of this Dhama in a few minutes. There are innumerable glories of this Dhama. I have mentioned all the glories of this Dhama in my book. Do read it sometime.

In this dhama Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu came and stayed here for long. Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Vitthala. 5000 years back, His form as Panduranga is described. Why was He called Panduranga? You must have heard. He went herding the cows as Gopala. When the cows moved around, the soft, light dust of Vrindavan spread in the atmosphere and after sometime it fell on the trees, stones and even on Krsna’s face, head and cloths. If you look at Kanhaiya, then you will have to say what? Panduranga! Pandu means light or yellow. The Colour of the dust of Vrindavan is yellowish whitish. Kanhaiya is dark or blue like Ujjwal nilamani. But that Ghanasyama form gets covered with the whitish dust of Vrindavan and then He doesn’t remain Ghanasyama, but becomes Panduranga. Then have you understood how not only Dvarakadhish, but Vrindavan Krsna is Panduranga. In the morning after Abhishek He is offered arati. Then the Lord is reminded of the butter stealing pastime in the morning. In the middle of the arati He needs butter. Maiya mohe makhan bhave. O mother! Feed me butter. zunaka bhakar or puranpoli. Mohe makhan bhave. What all things you keep feeding me! I like butter. Everyday during the arati He is given a big ball of butter. Who is the Lord who eats butter? Dvarakadhish doesn’t eat ? He does eat, but not that much. May be little bit on the chapati. Dvarakadhish also eats butter. Rama must also be eating, but not like Kanhaiya, who steals and eats it. Lord Panduranga who eats butter is Krsna. There is also Rukmini and Radha along with Him. Then He becomes Radha-Syamasundara and also Rukmini-Dvarakadhish.

That same Panduranga becomes Gaura. During the South India yatra Caitanya Mahaprabhu came to Pandharpur. Devotees of Jagannatha Puri were not allowing Him to leave from there. He said, “I must go. I have to search for my elder brother Vishwarupa.” Vishwarupa was the elder brother of Mahaprabhu who had taken sannyasa at a very young age. Have you ever thought of taking renunciation? Oh! We can think about it in old age. ( laughs) When the fruit is fresh, then it should be offered to the Lord. When the body starts rotting and dwindling, then what will you offer? When you are fresh, young, you should offer yourself to the Lord.

Kaumaram aacharo pradnye In young age we should do such work.

Caitanya Mahaprabhu has said that He wanted to search for Vishwarupa. But Krsna Das Kaviraj Goswami had mentioned in his book, before starting from Jagannatha Puri Mahaprabhu knew that Vishwarupa has left his body and has left this world, but He wanted to have a reason to leave Jagannatha Puri.

When Caitanya Mahaprabhu reached Pandharpur, His search ended as He received confirmation from Sriranga Puri. You, all those of you who are sitting here and listening from all over read Caitanya-caritamrta chapter 9 from 281 sloka onwards about Mahaprabhu’s pilgrimage. In many slokas Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s Pandharpur yatra has been described. Before coming to Pandharpur He went to Kolhapur and then He must have gone to Aravade where Radha-Gopal temple has been established.

Translation
From there Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu went to Pandarapura, where He happily saw the temple of Viththala Thakura. (CC Madhya 9.282)

Tatha means from there, Kolhapur and other towns villages around, passing from there He, p???arapure ?il? gauracandra. It must be the name of Pandharpur at that time. There are many names of Pandharpur. People from Karnataka utter the name in their way and from Andhra Pradesh they utter it is their own way. As time passes there could be some changes and vikruti in the name. He took darsana and embraced Lord Vitthala and was immersed in bliss. He wanted to do the same in Jagannatha Puri, but it was not possible there so He did it here. He embraced Vitthala. They are both the Lord. One form of the Lord is embracing the other form. Gaur Bhagavan’ is in the role of a devotee. Pandharpur is on the banks of River Bhima. It is said that He initiated Tukarama Maharaja in Pandharpur. Not at that time as at that time Tukarama was not there. Tukarama appeared later. But when he appeared and wherever he was Caitanya Mahaprabhu gave him initiation. Tukarama has said , “Raghav-Caitanya, Keshav -Caitanya gave me initiation.” Who is Raghav Caitanya or Keshav Caitanya?

Krsna Kesava Krsna Kesava pahi mam
Rama Raghava rama Raghava rama Raghava raksha mam.

This way Tukarama acarya became the disciple of Mahaprabhu and became famous in Maharashtra. He spread the Sankirtana movement in all the places around.

Today also Tukarama Kirtana groups are famous in Mumbai. His abhanga book is famous. Their Sankirtana party is like the Gaudiya Vaisnava kirtana parties. They also do kirtana with Karatala and Mridanga.

Translation
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu chanted and danced in various ways as usual. A brahmana, seeing Him in ecstatic love, was very pleased and invited the Lord to his home for lunch. ( CC , Madhya 9.283)

In those days the appearance of Pandharpur was different and the houses were also different, unlike the jungle of concrete houses today. That time ISKCON was non-existent. Caitanya Mahaprabhu came here so ISKCON was established. While taking bath Caitanya Mahaprabhu may have glanced at this land thinking in future, there will be Hare Krishna dhama of Gaudiya Vaisnava over here. The Lord is Trikalagyana ( knower of past present and future). He is sarvagya. The Lord doesn’t see things after they are constructed. He views it even before construction. There was a lot of ecstatic kirtana and dancing by Mahaprabhu.

One of the Brahmins called him for Bhiksha one day where He received the good news that Sriranga Puri had also arrived in Pandharpur. Sriranga Puri was the direct disciple of Madhavendra Puri from whom our Gaudiya Sampradaya begins. He is the pratham acarya of our sampradaya. This way there is a Gaudiya connection of Pandharpur. Isvara Puri was a disciple of Madhavendra Puri and Caitanya Mahaprabhu was a disciple of Isvara Puri.

Sriranga Puri was the god-brother of Isvara Puri. In ISKCON also we talk that way. Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Sriranga Puri did a 7 day Katha over here. In the whole of the South Indian yatra Caitanya Mahaprabhu stayed for this long only in three places. One is at Kovur on the bank of River Godavari where there was a dialogue with Ramananda Roy which continued for many days. I think 10 days. Then when he reached Srirangam He stayed there for 4 months in Caturmasa. Pandharpur is the third place where He stayed for 7 days. At other places He just stayed for a night. Sometimes He never even stayed for the whole night. At midnight He would start for the next destination. This is also the glory of this Dhama. Caitanya Mahaprabhu increased the glory of this Dhama by His auspicious stay over here.

Then when he met Sriranga Puri who informed him that Shankar Aranya Swami had come here and left this mortal world. Mahaprabhu explained, “He was my brother.” This that was a big event. Caitanya Mahaprabhu stayed here for so long. He did kirtana and katha for so many days over here. His brother Vishwarupa who was a partial expansion of Balarama left his body in Pandharpur. Nityananda Prabhu also came here and was initiated in Pandharpur. All glories to Nityananda Prabhu. The way so many devotees get initiation here in Pandharpur. The initiation of Nityananda Prabhu in Pandharpur is not a small event. Nityananda Prabhu who is Adi guru accepted a guru over here. He took initiation from Laxmipati Titrtha, who is from Madhvacarya sampradaya . This way so many acaryas came here, even from Ramanuja Sampradaya, Nimbarka and Visnu Swami. Nityananda Prabhu took initiation from Laxmipati Titrtha. Some also understand that Nityananda Prabhu took initiation from Madhavendra Puri. In Bhakti Ratnakar, it is mentioned clearly that He displayed His pastimes over here.
