Sita Rama Katha Day 3

3 May 2020

Day 3

Sita Rama Katha

Hare Krishna. Welcome all. Here devotees of ISKCON Pandharpur are participating in Katha. Katha is being telecasted from Pandharpur and hence it is obvious that Pandharpur devotees are taking part in this Katha. Devotees from different parts of the world are doing sravanam. Devotees from 862 locations are taking part in the Katha which has been organized on the occasion of Sita Navami.

Today is the third day of the Katha. Tomorrow is Mohini Ekadasi. The subject remains the same, whether you do Katha of Rama or Syama. Sometimes stupid people sing ” Kabhi Rama banke, kabhi syama banke ” or they sing ” Kabhi Sai Baba banke” If this is the case then you have not understood Siddhanta. So there will be no change in the topic. Krsna is Rama. As Kunti Maharani says…..

maya-javanikacchannam
ajñadhoksajam avyayam
na laksyase mudha-drsa
nato natyadharo yatha

Translation:
Being beyond the range of limited sense perception, You are the eternally irreproachable factor covered by the curtain of deluding energy. You are invisible to the foolish observer, exactly as an actor dressed as a player is not recognized. [SB 1.8.19]

…that in each drama the actor remains the same, but his dress keeps on changing. He looks different. His name also changes. His costumes are also different. The actor remains the same. Kunti Maharani is informing us of this .

kesava dhrita-rama-sarira jaya jagadisa hare
kesava dhrita-narahari-rupa jaya jagadisa hare

How many times does this have to be said?

advaitam acyutam an?dim ananta-r?pam

vede?u durlabham adurlabham ?tma-bhaktau

Translation:
“I worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda (K???a), who is the original person—absolute, infallible, without beginning. Although expanded into unlimited forms, He is still the same original, the oldest, and the person always appearing as a fresh youth. Such eternal, blissful, all-knowing forms of the Lord are usually not understood by even the best Vedic scholars, but they are always manifest to pure, unalloyed devotees.”[ Brahma-sa?hit? (5.33)]

anadi rupam. All expansions are one. These incarnations are eternal. Then there is Mina sarira (Fish incarnation). There are Varaha Rupa and Kalki incarnation also. All these are stories of the same subject only. Govindam adi purusam.

r?m?di-m?rti?u kal?-niyamena ti??han
n?n?vat?ram akarod bhuvane?u kintu
k???a? svaya? samabhavat parama? pum?n yo

Translation:
The Lord is situated as Himself, Lord K???a, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and He is accompanied by His expansions like Lord R?ma, Baladeva, Sa?kar?a?a, N?r?ya?a, Mah?-vi??u and so forth. The devotees worship all these forms according to their liking, and the Lord, out of His affection, presents Himself as arc?-vigraha.[Brahma-sa?hit? (5.39)]

There are many forms, but the cause of all incarnations is only one – Krsna. Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu showed His six hands Shad-bhuja-darsana to Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya in Jagannatha Puri. In two hands there was a bow and arrow. The colour of His hands was the same as yesterday when Radha Pandharinatha appeared as Sita Rama. In the other 2 hands, there was a flute with the colour like that of Ghanshyama. And in the other two hands was a danda and kamandalu having a golden complexion. At different times the Lord appears.

sambhavami yuge yuge

In Treta-yuga the Lord appears before ten lakh years. Very few people know this or have faith in this. Ramayana is an Itihaas, a History. But today’s historians begin their history from Lord Buddha, 2500 years ago. There was Lord Buddha and King Ashoka. They say there were no human beings before that, only monkeys. Darwin’s theory is there which is just speculation. They don’t know that the Mahabharata war happened 5000 years ago. They say all these are fictitious stories. 9 – 10 lakh years ago there was Ayodhya which was the best city. They say this is not possible and people were living in caves and were using stones to fight. This is the belief of most people today. It is also important for listeners to have faith that Lord Rama was there. He came to Pacavati and Ramtek, in Nagpur in Maharashtra. Lord Rama was there in Dandakaranya meaning Dandak Aranya just like Vrinda’s forests or Vrindavan.

I was in Los Angeles and they were celebrating the foundation day of Los Angeles. I asked them how old is your Los Angeles? They replied that Los Angeles is a very old city, 200 years old. Srila Prabhupada would say this is Kupamanduk philosophy or Dr. Frog’s philosophy. This is the understanding of people. They are our brothers and sisters. They think that if it is 200 years old means it is very old. How old is Ayodhya? Just saying 9 to 10 lakh years old is also an offence against the dhama.

The Dhama is eternal. This understanding is transcendental. We are trying to understand this Katha with the right understanding. Valmiki Muni had seen this dhama and he was shown all the pastimes by Lord Brahma and Narada Muni. All these pastimes can be understood by the soul, not by our mind or intelligence. These pastimes are inconceivable, hence they should be accepted as it is. This is called Avaroha Pantha.

Translation:
This supreme science was thus received through the chain of disciplic succession, and the saintly kings understood it in that way. But in course of time, the succession was broken, and therefore the science as it appears to be lost. [BG 4.2]

These pastimes are being explained since that time. Luv and Kush began it and then it continues by disciplic succession. We need to hear it with humility.

Translation:
The humble sages, by virtue of true knowledge, see with equal vision a learned and gentle br?hma?a, a cow, an elephant, a dog and a dog-eater [outcaste].[ BG 5.18]

Brahman is humble. The more one gets knowledge, the more one becomes humble. Knowledge makes one humble. The hope and prayer is that by hearing Katha we will become humble and qualified to understand this Katha and become patra. Do you understand Patra or vessel? There is a patra and there is a chalani or a vessel with holes. If you keep something in a vessel with holes then it may get lost and you won’t find it next time. It is necessary so that we become qualified.

When Lord Rama was young Vishwamitra Muni came from Siddha Ashram. He was welcomed in the Assembly of King Dasaratha. Then King Dasaratha asked Vishwamitra Muni what they could do so that all his requests could be fulfilled. He said, “Just give me your Rama.” In English we say, your wish is my command. When King Dasaratha heard this then his vatsalya bhava was awakened. King Dasaratha asked Vishwamitra Muni, “Where you are going to take Them?” Then Vishwamitra Muni said,”I will take Rama and Laksmana to the forest where we do yajna. They will protect us as. There are so many demons”. When Dasaratha heard this then he fell unconscious. When he came back to consciousness then King Dasaratha said, “My son is too young. He is just 15 years old. My son is a rajeeva locana.” How is he? He has eyes like lotus petals. He was not meant to say that his son is beautiful, but as He is rajeeva locana He feels sleepy at night. Then how will He protect the yajnas during the night? Then Vishwamitra Muni got angry. He knew who Lord Rama was. He knew Lord Rama is Purushottama. He knew that He can kill all the demons who are creating so many obstacles. King Dasaratha was not aware of this because of Yogamaya due to his fatherly affection. Both had different feelings. Vishwamitra Muni wanted to glorify Lord Rama and Laksmana as They would go to Siddha Ashram. Once Radha Govinda Maharaja was saying that when King Dasaratha heard all this he said: “He is my son and how is it that you can know more about Him?” Vatsalya Bhava hides the “bhagawatta” of the Lord. Then Rama and Laksmana went to Siddha Ashram, where Sri Rama kills Tadaka.

He starts the killing of the demons. In Krsna’s pastimes Putana was the first demoness to be killed by Him. Then Subahu was killed. Marici was wounded and was taken to Lanka as he was going to be useful in future pastimes. At the time of the kidnapping of Mother Sita, all things were explained to him by Ravana. Ravana had told him to become a deer and run. Rama would follow him and kill him. Then Marici replied, “ We should not go to Rama. I’ve experienced it and I know.” He was asking Ravana, “Do you want to die?” He said that he was just about to die, but was saved. Then Ravana said, ‘Do you want me to kill you?’ Then Marici agreed to die by Lord Rama’s hands.

Janakpuri or Mithila was not far from Siddha Ashram. Vishwamitra Muni along with Rama and Laksmana proceeded towards Mithila. On the way Ahilya Uddhar took place. They were welcomed in Janakpuri. At that time Sita’s Swayamvar was going on. Sita was about to garland Her husband. Who was to be selected as Her husband? One who can lift and string Lord Siva’s bow. No king was able to lift the bow and if someone was able to lift it, he was unable to string it. Ravana had also tried. Everyone wanted Mother Sita as their wife. King Janaka asked Vishwamitra Muni whether Rama could try.

They were taken to the king’s assembly by 5000 soldiers. I heard that Sita played with the bow as one plays with a toy horse. She is Rama’s Sita. She is not ordinary. Then Lord Rama came. Sita was also there. The groom was there and the bride was also there. Everyone wanted Rama to be successful. King Janaka started to think, “It would have been better if hadn’t kept this condition of lifting the bow”. He wanted Lord Rama as Sita’s husband. He was thinking what will happen if He could not lift it . Then Lord Rama took Vishwamitra Muni’s blessings and circumambulated the bow.

He lifted the bow with His left hand and put pratyancha on it and the bow broke into pieces. There was a tumultuous sound and only five personalities remained standing. The five personalities were Rama, Laksmana, Vishwamitra, Janaka, and Sita.

Everyone congratulated Rama as they got up. Mother Sita was ready with a garland and She made Her way to Lord Rama. But She was stopped by Lord Rama saying that He needed to take into consideration the opinion of His father. A message was sent to Ayodhya and all Ayodhyavasis came in 6 days. King Dasaratha agreed, but also said that his remaining sons should also get married. Then discussions started. King Janaka had two daughters Sita and Urmila. King Janaka’s name was Siradwaja. His other brother was there named Kushadhwaja who had two daughters named Mandavi and Srutakirti. Mandavi got married to Bharat and Srutakirti married Satraguna. Then the mass marriage took place as it is said today. They returned to Ayodhya.

Lord Rama had to go to exile. Mother Sita insisted that She will also follow Lord Rama. Laksmana also followed. They reached Ramtek and He took the vow to free the earth from demons. They stayed at Pancavati. The 5 trees are still there. Ravana abducted Mother Sita from there. Lord Rama was calling ‘Site Site’ but only the trees were responding. These lilas are taking place in Aranyakand. Then They meet Sugriva and Hanuman in Kishkindha kand. In Sunderkand Hanuman is successful in finding Mother Sita. As he shared this with Lord Rama, the Lord embraced him. Then they constructed a bridge over the ocean, fought the war, and emerged victorious on the day of Dasami. Sukadev Goswami has described the qualities of Mother Sita when he was describing Ramayana in Srimad Bhagavatam.

Translation:
Mother S?t? was very submissive, faithful, shy, and chaste, always understanding the attitude of her husband. Thus by her character and her love and service she completely attracted the mind of the Lord.[SB 9.10.55]

At the end of the war, Lord Rama went to Ashoka Vatika and saw Mother Sita. They saw and met each other. Then they flew back to Ayodhya where Bharat was waiting for Them. They were welcomed by all. And then Rama became Raja Rama.

Sita Rama Katha Day 2

2 May 2020

Day 2
Sita Rama Katha
Appearance Day of Mother Sita

Jai Sri Rama hor gaya Kama. All endeavours become successful with Rama Nama. Katha commenced yesterday. Today is Day 2.

We were remembering Balakanda, the first sarga of Ramayana which was spoken by Narada Muni. He can also be called Ramada as he gives Rama. He can also be called Krshnada as he gives Krsna. He is the acarya of our Brahma Madhava Gaudiya Sampradaya. Narada Muni gives us Rama, Krsna, and Narayana. He tells us Their Katha and for that purpose he travels throughout the universe. He goes out of the universe also. He even goes to Vaikuntha Goloka. Yesterday we heard Sankshipta Ramayana from Narada Muni. Valmiki Muni tells the latter pastimes. Valmiki Muni reached the banks of River Tamasa with Bharadwaja Muni. The water of that river was very clean, free from garbage. It’s said that this river was as clean as the mind of the sages. Valmiki Muni wanted to take rest on the banks of River Tamasa before taking a bath. At that time he saw two Krauncha birds – a male and a female. In English they are called cranes. One hunter came and killed the male bird. We heard about the state of the female bird. Seeing the condition of the female bird Valmiki Muni felt compassion and cursed the hunter. In his lamentation a verse came from his mouth.

maa nishada pratistham tvamagamahs?svati samaa
yat kraunchamithunaadekam avadhi kaamamohitam

Translation:
“Oh! violent Hunter, by which reason you have killed one bird of the couple, when it was infatuated by passion, for that reason you will never get a state of rest for everlasting years to come…” [1-2-15]

He was surprised as he hadn’t composed a single verse till then. It was in anushtup chandaha or meter. Most of the verses of Bhagavad-Gita are in anushtup chandaha (metres with 8 syllables in a quarter). So the verse being uttered by Valmiki Muni was in anushtup chandaha.

Then while bathing he was thinking whether he had done anything wrong by cursing the hunter? When he was returning from the bath he witnessed one more surprise as four-headed Brahma had appeared there.

aajagaama tatah brahmo lokakartaa svayam prabhuh |
chatur mukho mahaatejaa drastum tam munipungavam ||

Translation:
Then, the great resplendent four-faced creator of fourteen worlds, almighty Brahma, arrived there on his own, to see that eminent saint Valmiki. [1-2-23]

He did padaprakshalan and offered him a seat. While doing everything he was wondering how this verse was spoken by him. Then he asked Brahma who had made him say this verse? Lord Brahma replied, “Everything happened with my blessing. Mother Saraswati made you recite this verse. You composed one verse, but I want you to compose such many verses.”

raamasya charitam kritsnam kuru tvam rishhisattama

Translation:
You shall render the legend of Rama, in its entirety.

In this way, Lord Brahma instructed Valmiki Muni to compose Ramayana describing the life of Lord Rama. How long will this Ramayana remain popular?

yaavat sthaasyanti girayah saritah cha mahiitale |
taavat raamaayana kathaa lokesu pracharisyati ||

Translation:
“As long as the mountains and even rivers flourish on the surface of the earth, so long the legend of Ramayana will flourish in this world… [1-2-36]

Till the time there will be mountains and flowing rivers this Ramayana Katha will keep on spreading. It will be there till there is no annihilation. One person named Sanjay passed away in Delhi. People said that his name will br remembered till the sun and moon exist. The sun and moon are still there, but the name of that person is forgotten. People try to imitate the same things which happened with Rama. People make a big donkey a leader of the assembly of all donkeys. This takes place in the assembly of demons. Valmiki Muni said, “I haven’t seen or listened to this Katha and you are saying I should compose the whole Ramayana.” Lord Brahma replied, “Do not worry. The Katha will be revealed in your heart and you will be able to see all the pastimes.”

Ramayana was already composed when Rama appeared in this world. Only a few pastimes had happened and it was composed. He was 16 years old, He got married, stayed in Ayodhya for some time, went to the forest for 14 years. Yesterday we explained that one washerman was blaming his wife for something and chasing her out of his house and saying that he was not Lord Rama who took Sia back. Seeing this, Lord Rama sent Sita Devi to the forest. She stayed in Valmiki Muni’s asrama. Luv and Kusha were born there. Only 40 years of the 11,000 years had passed. At that time Ramayana was composed.

In one sense all the Lord’s pastimes take place in the present. Pastimes never get destroyed. Hence we call the Lord sat-cit-ananda. We should understand the pastimes of Lord in truth.

janma karma ca me divyam
eva? yo vetti tattvata?
tyaktv? deha? punar janma
naiti m?m eti so ’rjuna

Translation:
One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna.[ BG 4.9]

We should understand kathas with siddhanta or philosophy. We shouldn’t be lazy in understanding the siddhant. Srila Prabhupada also repeatedly spoke about siddhanta. We should hear and repeat katha while understanding the siddhanta. There is the Sandhini potency of the Lord which maintains everything. Sandhini comes from sat, Samvit from cit and Hladini from ananda.
Sandhini potency keeps everything fresh. What is the Hladini potency of the Lord? Lord Rama’s Hladini potency is Sita. This potency gets personified. She appeared today in this universe in Lord Rama’s pastimes. She appeared in the Prakat Lila. When there is a situation Lord Rama appears. Whenever there is a decline in religious principles the Lord has to descend. Hence such pastimes are called prasangika lila, Lilas which have a reason behind it. Lord Brahma is telling Valmiki Muni that he will witness all these pastimes.

iti uktvaa bhagavaan brahmaa tatra eva antaradhiiyata |
tatah sa shishhyo bhagavaan munih vismayam aayayau ||

Translation:
On saying thus that Divinity Brahma vanished then and there only, and then that godly sage Valmiki came by astonishment, along with his disciples. [1-2-38b-c]

By saying this Lord Brahma went back to Brahmaloka or Satyaloka on his hamsa. Then Valmiki Muni composed Ramayana.
Earlier Valmiki Muni was a dacoit named Ratnakar. He would rob many people. Then Narada Muni reached there. What can be stolen from him? He just has the pearls of the holy names of Lord Rama. He asked Ratnakar to chant the names of Lord Rama. He was chanting mra mra mra and then it became ram ram ram. Earlier he was doing offensive chanting and then ceto darpana marjanam happened. There is one verse in Ramayana about the glories of chanting the Lord’s name.

Rama Nama Rama Nama Ram namaiva kevalam

By chanting the holy name, he became Valmiki. Valmik or an anthill grew where Valmiki Muni was chanting the Lord’s name. All ants ate his flesh and just his bones and the Lord’s name was there. Hence Lord Brahma said to Valmiki that he was great amongst the sages. He composed the Ramayana and then he was thinking who will spread this Ramayana. He had accomplished his task. It was not only writing of the books, but distribution was also necessary. While Valmiki Muni was thinking like this Luv and Kusha came and sat in front of him. They were the sons of Mother Sita. They were reflections of Lord Rama. Seeing them Valmiki Muni thought that they will spread Ramayana. Valmiki Muni trained and taught them Ramayana. They were srutidhar hence they understood as they heard. They started to speak the Ramayana in song form. Similarly, Sukadeva Goswami became a preacher of Bhagavad Katha as he heard it. Both of them were practicing in describing the pastimes of Lord Rama which has all the mellows – virya, raudra, madhurya, hasya. This Katha is full of the different mellows and hence Ramayana is called Mahakavya or great epic.

Luv and Kusha spread this Katha at various places and Munis who were hearing this Katha were developing all the ecstatic symptoms. The audio would turn into a video and they would witness all the pastimes of the Lord. Then some of the Risis would come forward and embrace them, touch their feet, smell their head, and give them various gifts. In this way one day they reached Ayodhya and started Rama Katha. This became the talk of the town. As they were describing this Katha, people would sit and hear. If they started to walk people would follow them. This news reached Lord Rama. Lord Rama wanted to hear this Katha. Luv and Kusha were called into the assembly where all the personalities were present. Then the Katha started.

In this way, we come to the 4th sarga. As the Katha started Lord Rama was sitting on His throne. He thought, “I shouldn’t sit on a high throne,” Considering this as inappropriate from the point of view of the listeners, He stood up and sat at the feet of Luv and Kusha. And He started to hear the Katha from them.

Today is the appearance day of Mother Sita. Lord Rama appeared on Navami and Mother Sita also appeared on Navami. This is not a coincidence, but this is an arrangement of the Lord. Sita Mata appeared in Janakpuri or Mithila. Hence She is called Maithili. One of my god sisters was named Maithili Devi Dasi by Srila Prabhupada. She displayed her courage as the municipal officials came to destroy the altar of Sri Sri Radha Rasabihari at Juhu, Mumbai. She told them, “You have to cross over my dead body to get to the altar.” I’ve described the incident in Bombay Is My Office. Her name is Janaki also. There is Sita Sahasranam like Radha Sahasranam. Janaka Maharaja wanted to perform a sacrifice at that time and they were preparing the place for the sacrifice by ploughing the land. Janaka Maharaja was plowing it with the help of bulls, but the plough got stuck. There he found Mother Sita. In the same way, King Vrishabhanu also found Radha on the lotus. They didn’t appear in maternity homes. With this we can understand that the Lord’s birth is transcendental.

Sita Mata’s mother Sunaina was somewhere else and Sita Mata is appearing at another place. Who can give birth to a personality like Sita? She is sakti tatva. All such personalities are eternal and ever-existing. All incarnations appear from their respective abodes and like that only Sita appeared today. There is a place known as Sitamadhi where Sita Mata disappeared. She appeared from the earth and again disappeared into the earth. There is no doubt that by the mercy of Sita we get Rama. satyam satyam punaha punaha Without the mercy of Radha no one can get Krsna. In the same way, to get darsana and the service of Lord Rama we need to go through Sita. We get the mercy of Mother Sita through Guru parampara.

Soon we will get darsana of Radha Pandharinatha. Radha expands as Sita when Krsna expands as Rama. Krsna is theprimeval Lord and Radharani is adi prakrti. Krsna’s expansion is Rama and Radha’s expansion is Sita.

Thank you
Hare Krishna

Sita Rama Katha Day 1

1 May 2020

Sita Rama Katha

Ramayana – The Divine History!

Hare Krishna!

Welcome to all of you. It has been announced that there are many festivals and Vai?nava tithis in the upcoming 7 days till 7 May. There is Sita Navami, Rukmini Dvadasi, Narasimha Caturdasi and on 7 May there is thea appearance day of Madhavendra Puri and Radha Raman Deity of Vrindavan. The Sila became Radha Raman. There will be katha for 7 days. I was thinking whether we should do katha from 6.30 to 7.30 am or 8 to 9 am?

Let’s discuss this. We don’t have much time. Temple brahmacaris are also sitting here. What do you think?I think it’s good if everything gets done in one sitting. Otherwise you will also need to come back – first for chanting and then for katha. It’s better to have the chanting and katha in one go. Many devotees are in favour of 6.30 to 7.30 am. Katha will end at 7.30 am. I am of the opinion that the katha should be conducted between 6.30 to 7.30 am. Let’s do it then. We will not do kirtana as japa is kirtana itself. You have to stop chanting by 6.30 am. This class will be released in the evening on YouTube as well. This will be broadcasted later.

This can be called a katha mahotsava or ?ravanotsava sapta. There is netrotsava also – festival for the eyes. Darsana of Lord Jagannatha opens in Jagannatha Puri one day before Ratha-yatra. Jagannatha temple remains closed for some days and when it opens again, devotees eagerly gather to receive darsana of their Lord, thinking that for so many days they didn’t have darsana and that day they will have darsana. It is a feast for the eyes. Prasada is a feast for the tongue, darsana a feast for the eyes and katha a feast or festival for the ears.

Srila Gopal Guru Goswami has written a commentary on the Hare Krishna maha-mantra.

sva-presthena saha svabhista-lilam sravaya

Translation:
O Radha! O Hari! O Ram! O Sita! Please let me hear about your pastimes that you performed with your beloved. (9th Hare, of maha-mantra. Radha Krishna Smaran Paddhati, Gopal Guru Goswami)

This is ?ravanotsava. Then later he has said, sva-presthena saha svabhista-lilam darsaya

Translation:
O Radhe! O Hari! Please show me your pastimes that you performed with your beloved. Let me have darsana!(11th Hare, Radha Krishna Smaran Paddhati, Gopal Guru Goswami)

jagann?tha? sv?m? nayana-patha-g?m? bhavatu me

Translation:
May that Jagannatha Svami be the object of my vision

In this katha, there will be hearing and then darsana also. There can’t be darsana without ?ravana. Of the nine forms of devotional service sravana is the first. This will be a ?ravanotsava for the ears, then netrotsava for the eyes.

prem?ñjana-cchurita-bhakti-vilocanena
santa? sadaiva h?daye?u vilokayanti
ya? ?y?masundaram acintya-gu?a-svar?pa?
govindam ?di-puru?a? tam aha? bhaj?mi

Translation:
I worship the primeval Lord, Govinda, who is always seen by the devotee whose eyes are anointed with the pulp of love. He is seen in His eternal form of ?y?masundara, situated within the heart of the devotee. (Brahma-samhit? 5.38)

By hearing about the Lord, when will streams of tears glide down from our eyes? When this happens, we will have darsana of the Lord. As Rama Katha takes place, we will be taken to Treta-yuga. When there is Rukmini Katha, we will be taken to Dvapara-yuga and when Narasimha Katha takes place, we will be taken to Satya-yuga. This katha will allow us to have darsana of all these three yugas.

There will be katha of Sita Rama for the first 3 days. Then katha of Rukmini Dvadasi for the next 2 days which will include Rukmini Dvarakadish, Rukmini Haran. On Mohini Ekadasi, we will hear about the glories of Vitthala Rukmini and Pandharpur Dhama. Then there will be katha on the Appearance of Narasimha dev and on the last day on the appearance of Madhavendra Puri and Radha Raman.

Katha of Rama Sita is not just a story of a King and Queen. The story could be fiction also. But this is not a story, it is a history. There was a time in Treta-yuga when Lord Rama was there. Lord Rama and Mother Sita appeared from Saket dhama. Ayodhya dhama is in between Vaikuntha and Goloka. Lord Rama appeared from there. Lord Rama was on this planet for 11000 years.

dasa sahasra dasa shatani ca

Dasa sahasra means 10000 and dasa satani means 1000. For 11000 years, Lord Rama, Sita and Their associates lived in Ayodhya. They went to Lanka and returned to Ayodhya by Pushpak plane. Lord Rama became the King of Ayodhya. If rule or governance has to be there, then it should be like that of Lord Rama. Ramayana and Mahabharata are histories and the one who has written this Ramayana history is Valmiki Muni. He did not witness it, He was given special ability by Lord Brahma.

Ramayana was written by Valmiki Muni on the banks of Ganga in his asrama while Lord Rama was performing His pastimes. Only a few years had passed of the 11000 years and Bala-kanda was completed. There are 7 Kandas (cantos), 500 sargas (chapters) and 24000 verses in Ramayana. There is Bala Kanda, Ayodhya Kanda, Aranya Kanda, Kishkindha Kanda, Sundara Kanda, Yuddha Kanda and Uttara Kanda. Rama Vijay mahotsava had happened. Lord Rama killed Ravana, returned to Ayodhya and became king.

One time Lord Rama was roaming in His kingdom to get to know what the people of His kingdom think about Him. He heard one washerman chastising his wife. ‘Lord Rama might have accepted Sita Devi, but I won’t accept you.’ He was blaming Lord Rama. When Lord Rama heard this blasphemy, He ordered Laksmana to send Sita Devi away. Lord Rama was strict. Laksmana didn’t want to send Sita into the forest again, but Lord Rama was Agraj (elder) and Laksmana was Anuj (younger) even though They had appeared on the same day. Everyone respected Lord Rama. It was an order from Sri Rama and Laksmana fulfilled His order. Laksmana thought, ‘When We appear the next time, I won’t appear as a younger brother but as an elder brother and Lord Rama will appear as a younger brother.’ Hence in Dvapara-yuga, Laksmana appeared as Balarama and Lord Rama appeared as Sri Krsna. He didn’t leave Mother Sita just anywhere, but near the asrama of Valmiki Muni. Valmiki Muni gave shelter to Mother Sita. At that time Mother Sita was pregnant. When Prahlada Maharaja’s mother was pregnant, she was also given shelter by Narada Muni. Sita started to stay in Valmiki Muni’s asrama when she was pregnant. Luv and Kush were born and grew up within his asarama.

This is now the 7th and last Uttara Kanda taking place. Lord Rama had just returned to Ayodhya after exile. He went to exile once and sent Mother Sita to exile twice. At this time, Valmiki Muni had compiled Ramayana. The 1st sarga of Bala kanda is also known as ‘Sankshipta Ramayana’ or ‘Mool Ramayana’. It comprises of 100 verses. This sarga is compiled by Narada Muni.

One time Narada Muni came to Valmiki Muni’s asrama. He keeps on chanting the names of Radhika Raman and Sita Rama. Valmiki Muni asked Narada Muni,

ka? nu asmin s??pratam loke gu?av?n ka? ca v?ryav?n |
dharmajña? ca k?tajña? ca satya v?kyo dh??ha vrata? ||

Translation:
Who really is that person in this present world, who is principled and also a potential one, a conscientious one, a redeemer, and also a truth-teller and self-determined in his deed… (1-1-2, 2 verse, 1 sarga, Bala Kanda)

“At this point of time on Earth who is great in strength, truth personified and maintainer of the welfare of all living entities. I want to hear about such a personality.” This is an inquiry about absolute truth.

Narada Muni answered,

ik?v?ku va??a prabhavo r?mo n?ma janai? ?ruta? |
niyata ?tm? mah?v?ryo dyutim?n dh?tim?n va?? ||

Translation:
One emerged from the Ikshvaku dynasty and known to people as Rama by his name, and he is conscientious, highly valorous, resplendent, steadfast and a controller of vice and vile.and his own senses, as well.(1-1-8- verse, 1 sarga, Bala Kanda)

Sit like a yogi when you are hearing or chanting. When you sit like a bhakti yogi then there will be Sravanotsava or Karnotsava.

Narada Muni said, “That personality is Lord Rama.” Narada Muni described the whole Ramayana in one sarga or chapter of Bala Kanda. At the end of the 1st sarga, he described Treta-yuga and also described the miserable situation in the age of Kali. There was a different situation in Treta-yuga.

prah???o mudito loka? tu??a? pu??a? sudh?rmika? |
nir?mayo hi aroga? ca durbhik?a bhaya varjita? ||

Translation:
When Rama is enthroned then the world will be highly regaled and rejoiced, exuberant and abundant, also rightly righteous, trouble-free, disease-free, and free from fear of famine. Thus Narada is foreseeing the future and telling Valmiki.(1-1-90 verse, 1 sarga, Bala Kanda)

How were the people at that time? All the people in Treta-yuga were blissful, but now the people are unhappy. All of them were satisfied which means that at that time their nourishment was available. They were righteous, free from adhi and vyadhi. They were not diseased or ill in mind and body. Mental illness is more dangerous than physical illness. It is said that 20% of the population of America is fit to be sent to the mental hospital. Prabhupada would say that the people of Kali-yuga won’t give charity. There will be no sign of atithi devo bavah. Instead there will be a sign ‘Beware of the dog’ at the entrance. Since there will be no prosperity people will not be in a position to give charity. But at that time, people donated freely.

na putra mara?am kecit drak?yanti puru??? kvacit |
n?rya? ca avidhav? nityam bhavi?yanti pati vrat?? ||

Translation:
While Rama is on the throne men will not see the deaths of their children anywhere in their lifetime, and the ladies will remain husband-devout and unwidowed during their lifetime.(1-1-91 verse, 1 sarga, Bala Kanda)

At that time sons never died while their fathers were still alive. Seniors died first. Women were pati vrata (husband-devout). The women lived for lesser years than their husbands and hence there were no widows.

na ca agnijam bhayam kincit na apsu majjanti jantava? |
na v?tajam bhayam kincit na api jvara k?tam tath? ||

Translation:
In the kingdom of Rama there is no fear for subjects from wildfires, gale-storms or from diseases. (1-1-92 verse, 1 sarga, Bala Kanda)

One of thhe symptoms of Coronavirus is a fever. But in Treta-yuga, no one suffered from a fever.

na ca api k?ut bhayam tatra na taskara bhayam tath? |
nagar??i ca r???r??i dhana dh?nya yut?ni ca ||

Translation:
There is no fear from hunger or thieves, nor the cattle is drowned in floodwaters. May it be a township or a remote province, it will be replete with coin and grain. (1-1-93 verse, 1 sarga, Bala Kanda)

There was no hunger or thirst at that time. Today many people are dying because of starvation. At that time there was no stealing. Today security businesses has risen. There was no need for any protection or guarding anything at that time. This all happened at that time. This is history. Narada Muni is saying this. This is a 9 hundred thousand year old history, but still it’s very fresh. It remains fresh news. In Kali-yuga yesterday’s news becomes old today and we put the newspaper in the garbage. But scriptural news is always fresh. We should hear scriptures with faith.

idam pavitram p?paghnam pu?yam vedai? ca sa?mitam |
ya? pa?het r?ma caritam sarva p?pai? pramucyate ||

Translation:
This Ramayana is holy, sin-eradicating, merit-endowing, and conformable with the teachings of all Vedas… and whoever reads this Legend of Rama, he will be verily liberated of all his sins…(1-1-98 verse, 1 sarga, Bala Kanda)

Narada Muni said, “Whosoever will read or hear this Ramayana with attention will result in getting rid of their sins. This is a punya (holy) katha and one who will hear this, will become a pious soul.”

hari mukhe mahna hari mukhe mahna
punyachi ganana kon kari

Jai Jai Rama Jai Jai Rama Jai Jai Rama
Jai Jai Rama Jai Jai Rama Krishna Hari

Translation:
Oh Seeker, Chant Hari! Chant Hari all the time. Don’t worry about counting how much Punya gets accumulated. (Hari Path, – Hari Mukhe Mahna, Abhanga 1, Sant Jnaneshwar Maharaja)

By hearing Ramayana katha, one will become a pious soul.

mhanun mazi vitthala awadi

Then one can awake one’s love for Vitthala or Sita Rama and become free from all sins.

After describing this Sankshipta Ramayana Valmiki Muni and his disciples performed Guru Puja, A?arya Upasana, Malyarpana, Pushpanjali, Padaprakshalan of Narada Muni. After this Narada Muni left. Narada Muni is parivrajakacarya. He preaches everywhere. Therefore he has disciples everywhere. Valmiki Muni is a disciple of Narada Muni. Srila Vyasa deva is also a disciple of Narada Muni. Before the compilation of Srimad-Bhagavatam, Vyasa deva was guided by Narada Muni. Then Srila Vyasa deva compiled Srimad-Bhagavatam. In the same way, Valmiki Muni was guided by Narada Muni for the compilation of Ramayana.

Earlier Valmiki Muni had not compiled any verse on his own. But one day he witnessed a scene in which there were 2 birds. The male bird was killed by a hunter and then the female bird started to lament. Seeing this Valmiki Muni also started to lament and cursed the hunter. Within that lamentation, a verse was uttered spontaneously from his mouth,

maa nishada pratistham tvamagamahs?svati samaa
yat kraunchamithunaadekam avadhi kaamamohitam

Translation:
Not only human beings, but even animal couples should not be hurt/disturbed when they are romancing being Kamamohitam. You have done a sin by doing it.

Valmiki Muni cursed the hunter that he will never be peaceful for the rest of his life as he had killed one bird while it was romancing and had separated those birds. This ?loka is his first composition. A?aryas relate this incident with the story of Lord Rama and Mother Sita. The hunter in this story is Ravana who took Mother Sita which distressed Lord Rama in Her separation. This ?loka is the base in the composition of Ramayana.

We will take the same scene ahead tomorrow in which Valmiki Muni meets Lord Brahma and Lord Brahma instructs him to compile the Ramayana.

Tomorrow we will have japa from 5.30 to 6.30 am and then 6.30 to 8 am IST, we will have katha.

Jai Ramayana!

Rama Katha Mahotsava ki jai!
Sita Navami Mahotsava ki jai!

Haribol!

Guru Disciples Relationship is all Lord Krsna’s Arrangements.

Guru Disciples Relationship is all Lord Krsna’s Arrangements.

08 07 2017 [28:06]

Occasion: Vyasa Puja class, online class for Durban devotees.
Pune

You are seeing me? Yes? And I am seeing the Lord. Radha Radhanatha ki jai! You are seeing me, I am seeing Radha Radhanatha. Are you there, also? Okay. Hari Hari. There is some reporting? I see many faces there and the temple that is out of this world. Is there a temple that is out of this world? Radha Radhanatha temple. Yes, that was my experience, out of this world experience in this temple.

So, today is not my birthday. This year it was on the fourth of this month and then I was born on the 5th July 1949. Today is what date? 8th.You are just few days behind me.

On the July 4th in Pandharpur and passed many years, I have been standing the Vyasa puja day in Pandharpur because the day I was born or I was given birth by the Lord Vitthala Panduranga that is also, that same day is the biggest day for Pandharpur or in Pandharpur. Millions of pilgrims come on the occasion of the Shayani Ekadasi and the Caturmasya, commencement of Caturmasya is on that day.

So, Lord was very kind to bring me into this world on that day, very big and auspicious day. I’ve been spending my days in Pandharpur, the Vyasa Puja day. This year was a little special, in the sense that Lord Nityananda appeared on my vyasa puja day. There’s a little suspense, probably a surprise. What does that mean Lord Nityananda appeared on my vyasa puja day?

Well the footprints, footprints of Lord Niyananda from Mayapur, they arrived on my vyasa puja day. They also have come to Durban last year or a few times. They did the TOVP Fund Raising. Maybe some of you have done contribution for the TOVP project in Mayapur. Jananivasa Prabhu, from Mayapur, he came with the padukas, Nityananda padukas to Pandharpur. So, I was feeling very thrilled to have the presence of the padukas, the footprints, the shoes of Lord Nityananda. The shoes or the padugas of Lord Nityananda are non – different from Nityananda Rama’s padukas. When Bharat had come, he wanted to bring Rama back to Ayodhya but Rama would not move an inch.

He said, “Okay, here are my padukas, here are my shoes.” Bharat keeps them on his head and he returned happily to Ayodhya, thinking, “Oh, this footprints this is my sweet Rama. Jai Sri Rama! Jai Sri Rama!” These footprints are Rama Himself.

So, like I mentioned, that became the highlight of the vyasa puja day in Pandharpur and I also felt like Nityananda came back to Pandharpur after 500 years. 500 years ago, Lord Nityananda was in Pandharpur as one of His travels. He came to Pandharpur and guess what happened to Him? He took initiation. Nityananda Prabhu’s diksha samaroha happened in Pandharpur. And the day before yesterday, I was in my birth place. I went where I was born, not far from Pandharpur there is two hours drive to a place called Aravade. Probably, you have heard that name by now and lots of devotees, 200 – 300 devotees also had been coming, visiting my birth place. Then, I have been to Kolahpur where Mahalakshmi is worshipped. Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu also visited that money dham. This morning, I was there with the devotees of ISKCON in Kolahpur and right now, I am in Pune.

In three days, I have gone to three different places and I am here, not far from the exact location where aircraft from Vaikuntha had landed, some 350 years ago, and then the great sage, devotee, Tukaram had boarded that plane. Where I am sitting and talking to you, that place is just few miles from here. When there was no airports, no airplanes, no South African airways, no Garud Airlines, or no airlines. That time when an aircraft landed there and Tukaram boarded the plane and he took off and thousands witnessing. And, of course, for some days Tukaram has been chanting, “jai jai rama krsna Hari, jai jai rama krsna hari.”

So he was chanting,
hare krsna hare krsna krsna krsna hare hare
hare rama hare rama rama rama hare hare

And that chanting was very special. While chanting, he was only crying and praying to the Lord, “Oh Lord, please, please, bring me back home! I want to see you! Bring me home, back to you!” This was his prayerful mood. Then Lord took note and responded appropriately by sending a Vaikuntha vimana to Dehu Dhama, not far from Pune and he sat on and went back home.

Vaikuntha Dhama ki, jai!
Goloka Dhama ki, jai!

Tukarama has reminded, he reminds all of us and inspires us also, to prepare to return to Lord’s abode, while it is not only Lord’s abode but that is also our abode. Your father land is what, South Africa? You think so your father land is South Africa. When you think of a father who gave you birth or a mother who gave you birth or gave birth to your body then you think, “Yes, this is my mother, this is my father. So, this is my father land, mother land.” But we are not this body. This is the very foundational teaching of Sri Krsna. You are spirit souls. You are devotees of Krsna. Is that good news? Yes, Bhaktivinoda Thakur says so,

ei jiva krsna dasa ei visvasa
karle ta ara duhkha nai [Gitavali]

If you realize e jiva, the soul is krsna dasa, servant of Krsna. By knowing this, a person becomes joyful.

ei jiva krsna dasa ei visvasa
karle ta ara duhkha nai

So, you are all spirit souls and the spirit souls’ father is Lord Sri Krsna. This Sri Krsna is yours and mine and everybody’s father, everybody’s mother. So, that Lord’s land is our father land. That Vaikuntha, that Goloka, that land is our father land, our mother land. Do not forget this. I thought I would just remind you.

You know, this disciples – guru relationship are the whole guru tattva and the whole guru business, guru arrangement. This is Lord’s arrangement. It’s not the guru’s idea of taking up that position or the gurus in this world have got together and there are some union and then they make some declaration and then they started making false propaganda, “guru is this, guru is that. Jai gurudev, gurudev.” I was just talking to the devotees in Pune that this guru tattva, guru concept, guru personality, is all God’s arrangements. Since the beginning of the creation, the gurus have existed. When the universe were just now created, or just have come into existence, there was a Brahma, the only and the first living entity. So, Lord became Brahma’s guru. God became, Himself, the guru. And that disciple, Brahma, later on became the guru. Then Brahma, Madhva, Gaudiya, parampara, sampradhayas come down from Brahma all the way – Bhaktivinoda Thakura and Gaura Kishore Das Babaji and Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati and Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada ki, jai!

So, there was no time when guru did not exist or guru did not play his role in the human society. This way, these two, guru and Gauranga, become two prominent personalities in our lives. Krsna is Supreme Personality of Godhead. That is Lord’s representative – spiritual master, guru – Krsna arranges that. This is Krsna’s arrangement so that those who have forgotten the Lord, who have forgotten who they are, to remind them, to enlighten them, to wake them up and shake them up and bring them back or pull them in the path back home. With that purpose in mind, Lord has made this arrangement.

So, behind all these arrangements, Caitanya Mahaprabhu is right behind this foundation of the International Society for Krsna Consciousness. Caitanya Mahaprabhu made Srila Prabhupada a big instrument,

nimitta-matram bhava savya-sacin

And Srila Prabhupada founded International Society for Krsna Consciousness. Although, Caitanya Mahaprabhu predicted that His name will spread to every town, every village, all over the planet, Srila Prabhupada has made that prediction come true. As a result, the holy name is right there, right in Durban, the holy name has reached. You have the holy name. When the spiritual master – disciples relationship is formulized and some kind of contract is signed, then the guru gives the disciple Krsna in the form of the holy name.

Svarupa Damodar Prabhu, last time I was here he said that some of my disciples are very special and they kind of like me or they love me. If he says it must be true. That makes me happy you all are sincere, serious souls. Last time, while I was in Durban, we went to the goshala, there also we had a get-together and I think many of you spoke on that occasion and I have a fond memories of what you had to say that day.

All right. So, I will leave you alone with your cake. I am still there. I am still on the jet lag from the last visit. I kind of lost my heart in Durban. So, I’ll have to come back to get my heart back.

Ok. Hare Krsna. Time to go.
Srila Prabhupada ki, jai!
Radha Radhanatha ki, jai!
All glories to the assembled devotees. Hare Krsna.

Katha:Day 6
Venue: Theur, Pune

Jaya jaya sri krsna caitanya jay nityananda jay advaita-candrajayagaura bhakta vrnda

Everybody,
jayajaya sri krsna caitanya jay nityananda
jay advaita-candrajayagaura bhakta vrnda.
jayaadvaita-candrajayagaura bhakta vrinda.

Jaya Sri Krishna CaitanyaMahaprabhu, Nityananda prabhu, Advaitaacarya and gaura bhakti vrinda ki jaya. All glories to them all. Here we are continuing with our Karuna avatar Gaura Bhagavan katha. This is our sixth session. So, of course the topic is Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, we talked about Nityananda Prabhu also yesterday and we could be talking about a lot of things related with Gauranga. There are unlimited things to talk. There is Caitanya Caritamrita full of glories of Gauranga and Caitanya Bhagavad, Caitanya Mangal, Caitanya Carita, so many scriptures and so many acaryas have sung the glories of Gauranga, Nityananda, Advaita, Gadhadara, Srivasaadi Gaura bhakta vrinda. We are just taking a drop from that ocean of the glories of Gauranga, there’s an ocean, there’s a sindhu, we just take one bindhu and we are able to offer that or say that each day like today.

And there is one statement that talks about what is Gauranga known for or what is His philosophy. Caitanya Mahaprabhu mattaidam, this is the opinion of Caitanya Mahaprabhu and what is it?

Aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa-tanayas tad-dhamavrindavanam

That Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu recommends and He Himself follows that recommendation or reacts as per recommendation and what is that? Aradhyo bhagavan vrajesa-tanayas. He is worshipper of Sri Krishna. Again, He is Krishna Himself. However, He is taking role of worshipper of Krishna and not only He worships Krishna; tad-dharma vrindavanam as well as He loves Vrindavan, He worships Vrindavan. Ramya kacid upasenavraja-vadhu-vargenava kalpita. And this opinion, statement, philosophy continues and says if you wish to serve the Lord, serve the Lord the way gopis served or Radharani served. That is the best mode of worship, mode or mood of worship, Gopi-bhava. Srimad Bhagavatam pramanam amalam and the scripture for recitation for steadying, hearing Srimad Bhagavata. Why? It’s amalam purana, spotless purana and then at the end He says what is the prayojana, what is the goal of life? Premapum-arthomahan. We normally say purusharta. His statement says pum-artho, same thing. Purusharta, pum-artho, prema pumartho mahan. Attaining love of Godhead. Achieve love of Godhead is the goal of life. Did you get that?

And Caitanya Mahaprabhu mattaidam is Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s opinion tatra darah naparah. There’s nothing superior, this is it. Somehow there’s different items that we mentioned. Vrindavan dham ki jaya. Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu exhibited, demonstrated love for Vrndavan dham. As soon as He was initiated by Isvara Puri in Gaya. While He was chanting, His love revived, His love for chanting also revived, manifested and He wanted to run to Vrndavan. Somehow, His associates managed to stop Him and bring Him back to Navadwip from Gaya and Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu undergoes another initiation, sannyasi initiation. Now your name is, sannyasi name is Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu and this is sannyasa mantra that you chant and as sannyasi He was initiated into sannyasi order of life. Immediately, He wanted to run to Vrndavan, He thought He was free now, liberated, no strings attached, He was ready to fly to Vrindavan.

However, He was stopped by Sacimata and as they met, Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu met Saci Mata in Shantipur. She says, no no no, not Vrndavan, it’s very far, stay in Jagannatha Puri. Ok, so Caitanya mahaprabhu made Jagannatha Puri as His base and He was travelling out of Jagannatha Puri, travelling out and returning. But the place He wanted to travel to was Vrindavan. He was proposing to His devotees, associates, His travels to Vrndavan but they would not let Him go. They did not want to miss Him, they were not sure how they would survive in separation from the Lord. So, they were postponing Gauranga Mahaprabhu’s departure for Vrndavan when finally, nothing doing. “I have to go, I must go, I want to go to Vrindavan” and everybody wanted to go. Okay, if You are going, we also want to go. But he said no, only one person goes with me. Balabhadra Bhattacharya was chosen and just two of them travelled to Mathura Vrindavan, on the way, they passed through Jharikhanda forest. Now there’s a state of Jharikhanda and it was forest then, thick forest, still there’s a kind of forest there now.

So that is where Caitanya Mahaprabhu had performed His sankirtana with the jungle animals and the birds in the sky and revived their love for the lord also. Lord invested Krishna prema in them and they had forgotten their animalistic dealings and life-style and they’re acting like pure devotees although in the body of an elephant or tiger or deer or monkey whatever or the birds but they were pure devotees. Thoroughly purified in association of Gauranga Mahaprabhu and He felt of this is Vrndavan. There’s no envy, there’s no hatred, only love for each other, only friendly dealings amongst each other. Even animals were dealing like that so this is Vrndavan, Vrndavan dham ki jaya jaya, Vrndavan. He thought He was in Vrndavan. Although He was only half-way through to Vrndavan. So, then he proceeds towards Mathura and as he saw Mathura from distance, Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu He immediately offered His sastanga dandavat pranam to Mathura dham. He gets up and continues to travel and He enters Mathura and His at Vishramghat on the banks of Jamuna. Jamuna maiya ki. And His at Vishram ghat in fact and Mathura. Lord takes holy dip in Jamuna. Although He is Krishna Himself. His here on pilgrimage as a devotee. So, He’s taking holy dip. Hari hari.

He continues His journey towards Krishna janmastami, the birthplace of Sri Krishna. Through the town and of course from the time He had left Jagannath Puri, He had never ever stopped chanting and dancing so from Vishram ghat to birthplace of Sri Krishna, He has chanted and danced through the town of Mathura and finally arrives at a famous temple called Kesava dev. And as He takes darsaan, drinks the beauty of Kesava deva. He becomes more excited and ecstatic and He begins dancing like a mad-man although He is not a mad-man and now He is doing His udanda kirtaan, jumping high, golden form with the long arms. His clothes have a saffron ting and prakanda deha. His body was huge. Bigger than a normal human sized, even those days. That golden form was dancing and by this time, a lot of residents of Mathura had arrived.

His arrival had become talk of the town and as they had finally come to Kesava dev temple and seeing Gauranga and His beauty and His ecstatic dance, they not seen anything like this ever in their lives. They were enchanted, captivated and one brahmin called Sanodiya brahminin fact was dancing also in front of Caitanya Mahaprabhu. So finally, and slowly kirtana and dancing is concluded, the brahmin Sanodiya brahmin was initiated by Madhavendra Puri previously. He invited Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu to his home for diksha, prasad, lunch prasad. Lord was now the guest of this Sanodiya brahmin. So, practically all the residents of Mathura are gathered there surrounding the little dwelling of Sanodiya brahmin and they all want darsan of Gauranga. “We want Gauranga, we want darsana.” They are all around, some are even climbing up and through the windows they are trying to get a little glimpse. So, Caitanya Mahaprabhu had no choice but to come out and give them darsan saying hariiiiiibooool! And they were also shouting out loud, hariiiboool.

So, everyone was joyful to see and hear Gauranga Mahaprabhu then later on this Sanodiya brahmin he took Sri Krishna Mahaprabhu on a parikrama of Mathura. Mathura parikrama, Krishna Janmastami of course the birthplace of Sri Krishna and there is Rangeshwar Mahadev, Pipaleshwar Mahadev, Bhuteshwar Mahadev, Gokarneshwar Mahadev, there are four Mahadevas Siva temples in four directions of Mathura playing a role of dikpal, protectors of the four directions Shiva in four directions . and like that many, where Kamsa was killed, Kamsa Tila it is known as Kamsa Tila and like that. Then as He was taking darsana of Mathura. Spots, holy spots. Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu had desire to go on an entire Vraja mandala parikrama of all the twelve forests of Vrndavan He wanted to visit. And this Sanodiya brahmin of course Balabhadra Bhattacharya is with Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, he had travelled with Mahaprabhu, he is there.

This Sanodiya brahmin was local so he wanted to come along and be a guide of Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu so there they go, they started parikrama with Madhuvan and Talavan and Kumudvan and Bahulavan and then comes Vrndavan and there is a Kamavan and there’s Khadiravan and crossing of Jamuna is there and there is a Bhadravan and there is a Srivan. I skipped one Bhandirvan and then Belavan which is also Srivan and Lohavan, eleventh one and the twelfth one is Mahavan, Gokula. So, Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu was on the tour of these twelve forests of Vrndavan.

So, as they had come to Bahulavan one time there was a cow called Bahula. Some special pastime had taken place with a cow called Bahula and in that forest Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu as He is travelling and chanting and dancing,

Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna he!
Krishna Kesava Krishna Kesava Krishna Kesava pahi mam!

As he was chanting and dancing through Bahulavan, there is some distance cows were grazing and the cows also noticed Mahaprabhu, His presence and all the cows, they stopped grazing and they all ran towards Mahaprabhu and they all surrounded Mahaprabhu. And they all started licking the body of Mahaprabhu and Mahaprabhu started touching and caressing them, there in between the horns and “me too, me too.” Each cow wanted that she is touched by Gauranga and they all standing in a queue, they’re all around and Mahaprabhu is standing making like this arm long to reach cows all the way in the back or He is sahastra and has a thousand arms and He is dealing with thousands of cows simultaneously. Vatsalya, relationship between Lord and the cows of Vrndavan is that of the parenthood. The cows are the mother and Lord is the calf, vatsa, vatsalya. And that’s how they were dealing and enjoying that affectionate dealing. Vatsalya rasa was very juicy and as Mahaprabhu now wants to continue his tour, parikrama of Vrndavan. all the cows want to go right behind him so the cow herd men now they are struggling to keep the cows behind.

So Mahaprabhu proceeds and then there are the turn of the birds now. So many peacocks are now laded on the footpath and they are all facing Gauranga and as Gauranga proceeds, they are going in a reverse manner while dancing and the birds in the sky are chanting in a high pitch panchama in the fifth note. Very high pitched, chirping, singing they are doing. Hari hari. Then Mahaprabhu he came across a deer. Mahaprabhu is embracing him shedding tears and so is the deer shedding tears. By that touch of Gauranga Mahaprabhu. Then there were trees all around. Caitanya Mahaprabhu thought of and He did. He proceeded forward and embraced one tree. In fact before that happened. Mahaprabhu was experiencing how trees were greeting Him. They are shaking their branches and flower bearing trees were shaking branches and showering flowers mogra and champas and this and that variety of flower the whole pushpaabhishek of Sri Krishna Mahaprabhu was happening as He was proceeding and then there were fruit trees. They also start shaking their branches and they are all vaireties of fruit. Caitanya Caritamrit talks. This is all described in this Caitanya Caritamrit pastimes of Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu in Vrndavan or Caitanya personally performning Vrajamandala parikrama. As every year we do this parikrama during kartik, we do recite and remember this Caitanya Mahaprabhu pastimes through the twelve forests of Vrndavan. So, the trees were thinking “oh, friend is here so we have to greet Him.

Give Him some patram, puspam, phalam, toyam”. Some fruit, some flowers. So that is what they were doing. And Mahaprabhu feeling grateful, He starts embracing some of those tree and the tree next door says “me too”. And Mahaprabhu runs to that tree and embraces that tree and the next one, “me too”. And like that Mahaprabhu is running from tree to tree, embracing those tree and the tree are great devotees and certainly these cows are devotees, the birds are devotees, the trees are devotees and Vrndavan and Lord is reciprocating with all of them. I should have mentioned, all the residents of Vrndavan and Mathura, they thought of Syamasunda is back. He was Gaurasundar. Gaurasundar was in town. Mathura or now in Vrndavan parikrama but residents were thinking our Syamasundar is here, our Syamasundar is here and they were greeting, dealing with Him accordingly.

So, after more travel of Bahulavan Mahaprabhu saw in the distance on a branch in a tree. There were two bird. Suka and Sarika, male and female parrot. And Mahaprabhu could see that they were having some conversation, some talk, some matha. Now Mahaprabhu had a desire. Is it possible for me to hear what they are talking about? And as soon as Mahaprabhu thought of or desired hearing their dialogue. Immediately those two birds flew in the direction of Mahaprabhu and they were now right in front of Mahaprabhu. So Mahaprabhu extended His both arms and one parrot, male parrot sat on the right hand and the other one of the left and the dialogue continued. Of course they were talking about Radha and Krishna. The male parrot was glorifying Sri Krishna, advocate of Krishna trying to prove the supremacy of Sri Krishna while the female parrot was a Radha bhakta and she was trying to prove, “My Radha is superior to your Krishna”. It was a very nice dialogue; it is compiled in Caitanya Caritamrit by Krsnadas Kaviraja Goswami very beautiful.

So, male parrot says, “My Krishna is Madanamohana, He is the captivator of Madana the cupid, He is so beautiful.” kandarpa-koti-kamaniya-visesa-sobham. Sobham, the beauty of my Lord Sri Krishna is so much beauty that kandarpa-koti, koti, koti. Millions of kandarpa’s, kamadeva’s, kamadevatars are attracted to my Krishna’s beauty. So, he is known as Madanamohana but then the other, the female parrot, the Sarika says, “but do you not know that my Radhika is known as Madanamohana Mohini! Your Krishna may be attracting the cupids but your Krishna is attracted by my Radhika so she is madanamohana Mohini.” So after some sampling dialogue that Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu was able to hear or as they presented this little dialogue for information and pleasure of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, both the birds took off and back to the tree in the branch in the tree and they continued their dialogue and Mahaprabhu continued His parikrama tour of Vrndavan.

Then, He looked at peacock very closely, especially He was looking at the neck of the peacock and that complexion resembles Krishna’s complexion so by seeing the peacock’s colour complexion, all the devotion and emotion that aroused in Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu and He lost the external consciousness and He is on the ground, rolling very fast. He goes in this direction. Comes back in that direction. And this is happening in the forest, there were no bed of roses, there were ditches and the thorns and rocks and body of Lord was getting bruised and wounded and scratches. But of course He is not aware and now there is two prabhus Balabhadra Bhattacharya and Sanodiya brahmin from Mathura.

There are running right behind as Mahaprabhu is rolling. They both are trying to catch but His movements are like electric, so very f.ast, they are struggling, not able to catch. So, after a long, long time, they manage to catch hold of Gauranga and held Him tight Probably on the lap of one of them and the other one went to get some water and he dipped his outer garment in the water body and then squeezed and cooled the body of and cleaned the body of Gauranga but he still was unconscious and they started shouting, calling out the names of the Lord:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Or maybe they are saying: Jaya Radhe or Jaya Sri Krishna. They are chanting. So, finally they succeeded bringing Lord to external consciousness and as soon as He wascame to external consciousness immediately jumped and “haribol, haribol!” or “Krishna Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Krishna, Krishna he!” and parikrama continues and then travelling and travelling they come to the forest called Vrndavan. Sometimes confusing. All the forests put together, all the twelve forests put together is also called Vrndavan but amongst those twelve forests, there is also one forest that gets the name Vrndavan and so Mahaprabhu has travelled through four forests so far and has entered the fifth forest which is called Vrndavan. and as He arrives in this Vrndavan forest, He is making an inquiry, “Oh, is anyone around here knows whereabout Radhakunda. Has anyone seen Radhakunda. I am looking for Radhakunda.” And, no one has a clue what is He talking Radhakunda, no we are sorry, we haven’t heard of Radhakund, no no Radhakunda. But they said there are fields here or they also said, “oh we know Aristasuragram”.

This gram or village where Aristasura was killed, and he was killed on the banks of Radhakunda or even when Radhakunda came into being or existence he was killed and that region had become known as or was named after Aristasura as Aristasuragram. But we also know that there are two fields, one is called Gauri Badi one is called Kali Badi means one is blackish field, one is whitish or golden kind of field. So, Caitanya Mahaprabhu proceeds towards this Kali Badi, Gori Bali and of the two, He goes to Gori Badi. So, this Gori Badi refers to Syamakunda. Syama has Krishna, Syama complexion, ghanaevasyama. And Gori refers to Radha-Gauri. Radha is Gauri, Radha is tapta kanchana gaurangi. So, people had named or those places had become known as Kali Badi, Gori Badi no one knew Syamakunda, Radhakunda or one time Syamkunda and Radhakunda were there but they were filled with the earth and there were no traces of kundas as such.

And Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu found little puddle, little small pond. Little body of water and reaching there Mahaprabhu starts,

Jaya Radhe Jaya RadheRadhe Jaya Radhe Jaya Sri Radhe.

He is taking bath, taking a holy, not so much of a dip but taking bath as if He is taking bath in some holy kund or holy river and others who were watching are wondering, “This is our field, this is our farm, why is this man, this person taking his holy dip or snana as if this is some holy place”. Of course for Mahaprabhu that was the holiest of the holy place, that was Radhakunda and this was Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu discovered Radhakunda ki! And the next door was Syamakunda. So, Caitanya Mahaprabhu is also discovering and letting the whole world know what are the different various pastime places of Krishna in Vrndavan. Those days Vrndavan was neglected because of the Muslim rule and Vrndavan was abandoned. The deities were moved to Rajasthan Jaipur here, there and there are thrown deities in different kunds. And, the people have forgotten. Different locations in Vrndavan, different pastime places. So, here Gauranga Mahaprabhu is reviving the glory of Vrndavan, discovering the places of Krishna’s pastimes. Soon he is going to send His batch of followers. They will become known as six goswami’s of Vrndavan or even before that Lokanatha Goswami and Bhugarbha Goswami were also sent there to revive the glories or re-establish the glories of Vrndavan. So, if Mahaprabhu did that discovery kind of inauguration of the discovery by discovering Vrndavan, by discovering Radhakund and then Mahaprabhu now wants to perform parikrama of Govardhan.
Jaya Govardhan dhariki!

One is Govardhan, one thing is a Govardhan and there is a Govardhan dhari. Govardhan is a hill and Govardhan dhari is a person who held the hill on his little finger for seven days. So, Mahaprabhu begins His Govardhan parikrama. He comes up to place called Kusum Sarovar and He passes that Kusum Sarovar and is beyond and there He gets His first glimpse of Govardhan sila or Govardhan and immediately Lord starts running like a lightening and He is touching and embracing one rock. Holding tight. He is thinking He is embracing Govardhan dhri, the holder of the best of the mountains. Giriraj. And He is, with His tears, He is doing abishek of that Govardhan sila that He has held and then He rolls on the dust of, on the parikrama path and then He gets up and continues Govardhan parikrama and while performing Govardhan parikrama. He is chanting one mantra, mantra that was chanted or recited by the gopis or taught by the gopis. This is part of venugeet in the tenth canto of Bhagavatam and gopis had uttered hantay amadrir abala hari-dasa-varyo. The gopis are said “look, look, I am this one, in front of them”. Who is this, hari-dasa-varyo is the best of the devotees of Hari hari-dasa-varyo. Govardhan is hari, Govardhan is haridasa as well. He is Lord and He is devotee as well. There is two identities. So, gopis say “oh look at thosharidasaoh best of the devotees of the Lord. Jaya Giriraj hari-dasa-varyo”.

yad rama-krsna-carana-sparasa-pramodah

When Krishna and Balaram walk on the rocks of Govardhan, these rocks melt or they find a great pleasure as lotus feet of Krishna and Balaram touch the rock of this Govardhan Giriraj.

manamtanotisaha-go-ganayostayoryat

And this, Govardhan gopis are talking, He honours, Govardhan respects or does he respect go-ganayo. The cows and cowherd men or cowherd boys, tayor, Krishna and Balaram are honoured, respected served by this Giriraj. How does he serve?

Paniya-suryavasa-kandara-kandamulaih

He supplies water, he supplies the grass, the lots of caves for Krishan and Balaram boys to enjoy. kandara-kandamulaih and this Govardhan supplies lots of fruits and roots and leaves.

So, this is how the gopis had glorified Giriraj so Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu doing parikrama of giriraj govardhana, He is reciting this gopi geet or this recitation done by the gopis over and over again and again and again. And, traditionally they also try to do abhishek of Giriraj and other times they carry a pot filled with milk and there is a hole at the bottom, small hole and as they go around, they sprinkle that milk, pour that milk. They do pour on the path but that is considered they are pouring that on the top of Govardhan hill. In case of Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu He did not have to carry a water pot. There was a lot of water oozing out of His lotus eyes. He was shedding tears profusely and that is how He was doing abhishek of Giriraj all around.

Giriraj Govardhan ki!

So like that Mahaprabhu has travelled, toured, through Vrndavan, all the forests, forest after forest after forest and there is more description in Caitanya Caritamrita of Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s tour of Vrndavan and then finally He returns to Mathura and He decides to spend time at Akrura ghat which is between the pretend Vrndavan dham and Mathura town. In between is Akrura ghat. There is a less public, He wanted to settle in a place for his bhajana or chanting so He was stationed there and from there He would go to Imli Tala. There is a famous tamarind tree from Krishna’s time. So, one time he was sitting underneath that tamarind tree, it was just under the bank of Jamuna and He was chanting,

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna KrishnaKrishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare.

And, He becomes Krishna conscious and not only his consciousness is Krishna Conscious but He started looking like Krishna. He is Gauranga with the golden complexion but while chanting there that day, He changes complexion and He was Syamasundar looking bluish with bluish complexion. So Mahaprabhu spent some more time at Akura ghat but there were difficulties and while sitting on the bank of Jamuna and chanting and remembering His Lord, He would go in trance and few times He fell into the river and He was going down the stream and again Balabhadra Bhattacharyahad a hard time catching Him and dragging Him on the banks. So, this was happening every now and then so this was very risky so then there was a decision made that time has come for Mahaprabhu to leave Vrndavan and around that time also was maghamela in Prayag. The conference of Ganga, Jamuna Saravati at Prayag Allahabad. It is no more Allahabad, it is only Prayag, name of the town is Prayag… every year there is a special festival. So, it was decided that Mahaprabhu would of course He has to return to Jagannatha puri, that is His base but on the way they would stop at Prayag and so like that. Mahaprabhu having completed His Vraja mandala darsana Vraja mandala parikrama, He left for Jagannatha puri via Prayagraj and then also Varanasi and back to Jagannatha Puri dhama ki!
Gaura premanande hari haribol. Thank-you.

Siksastakam Seminar-Day 2

Siksastakam seminar-Day 2
Venue: ISKCON Mayapur
[1:48:54]

Thank you for coming again and again and again and again, four times. Then we don’t have to come back again in this material existence. If we could keep coming here and understand this subject matter of Siksastaka. This is ultimate. So we just make the point that how this Siksastaka is ultimate knowledge. There is like a Vedant, end of knowledge. There is nothing beyond this Siksastaka. Everything is in there. All the elements are there.
Yesterday how we were trying to understand with the help of the commentaries of Bhaktivinoda Thakur and Srila Bhaktisiddhant Sarasvati Thakur, the all aspects of bhakti, sadhana bhakti and bhava bhakti and prema bhakti is included in siksastaka. And sambandha, abhidheya, prayojana, this is there in siksastaka. From shraddha to prema all those different phases and stages the evolution is there as one goal. As one goes from ceto-darpana marjanam to aslisya va pada ratam pinastu mam which is the way of Lord’s talking. Caitanya Mahaprabhu is talking. These are His instructions. In just few words, few mantras all that is to be known is there, in condensed form, sutra. If sutras could become unfolded or open up to us, knowledge in there is revealed unto us, then that would be perfection of our lives and in that case apurnarbhava darsanam., apurnarbhava darsanam. There is no more darsana of this world. We don’t have to take anymore darsana, no more births, no more darsana of this world in the words of Kunti Maharani.

Now this is a post graduate study. The essence of all essence, sara, guhya, most confidential, at the same time because this has been very confidentially spoken by the Lord to His very pure hearted souls devotees, His close associates Ramananda Raya, Swarupa Damodar. So we covered kind of the first verse of Siksastaka. We cannot say we have finished, it is never finished. It is just the beginning, never ending. So today we wish to cover three more verses of the siksastaka. Number two, three and four and these, all these verses are part of sadhana bhakti all the way up to the verse number five. Yesterday we were understanding that there is sadhana bhakti and also sambandha, sambandha jnana the relationship so that’s our level. Our level we are sadhakas.

Let’s see when we go beyond verse five what happens. Now this is our level. We are devotees following rules and regulations. This is sadhana bhakti and trying to establish our relationship with the Lord, sambandha with the Lord. While there are so many sambandha, so many relations in this world, so they all begin ofcourse with this body, thinking I am this body. So when body become the basis, instead the knowledge is the basis or books are the basis, our body becomes the basis, basics. And with that life goes on and with the body we place ourselves in this world and we think this is mine, this is me, these are my people and all these are outside people, these are some other people.

ayam nijah paroveti ganana laghuchetasam

So all the sambandha, we have different kind of sambandha jnana. Not that we don’t have sambandha jnana but our sambandha jnana the knowledge of the relationships is all based on this body. So as soon as we make books as the basis or knowledge as the basis then everything changes. Then of course body doesn’t exist for us. We are not the body. Body is yantra rudhani mayaya, sitting in the yantra, machine called body. So with the knowledge we understand the position of the body seeing through the eyes of Bhagavad-gita, Bhagavatam, Caitanya Caritamrita. Then we understand. So making soul as the basis, not body as the basis, so soul as the base. Then soul’s relationship, that is the kind of sambandha jnana. So relationship not of the body or with the body but the relationship of the soul with the soul, ultimately soul’s relationship with the Supreme soul, so that’s the sambandha jnana.

So first five verses are talking of that sambandha jnana, today’s three verses also establishing that sambandha jnana and our regulated life of a devotional service. So yesterday the first verse glorified the holy name like anything. param vijayate, what kind of sankirtana?

param vijayate sri krishna sankirtanam

param vijay-Supreme victory. And then seven, seven attributes, seven qualities of that holy name, that nama sankirtan, also we heard about those seven qualities or attributes or virtues are also described as benedictions, seven benedictions.

ceto darpana marjanam bhava-maha-davagni-nirvapanam

You know yesterday we gave you hint where to stop, as am is there you stop. Sarvatma snapanam, anandambudhi vardhanam, begin counting seven and they are also described as benedictions sreya kairava chandrika vitaranam, sreya all the benefits, short term, long term all benefits are included in this sankirtana. And then entering into the next verse

utila visada, dainya,-pade apana sloka
yahara artha suni saba yaya duhkha-soka [[CC Antya 20.15]

So as we were informing you the context of siksastaka, Caitanya Mahaprabhu personally has recited. He is reciting and also giving commentary on each verse. Mahaprabhu has His own thoughts in Caitanya Caritamrita antya lila chapter 20, the eight verses of siksastaka are not one after the other. One verse Mahaprabhu says and He talks little bit about that verse and then next siksastaka, namnamkari bahudha then He has done little asvadan, He is relishing, He is contemplating on that, that astaka that thought that vers. He is making few comments and then the next and some more comments and the next like that. So at the end of the first astaka’s comments Mahaprabhu’s comment Mahaprabhu says this, lamentation and humility awoke within Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and He began reciting another of His own verses. By hearing the meaning of that verse one can forget all unhappiness and lamentation.

The next verse,

namnam akari bahudha nija-sarva-saktis

Is being introduced here by Caitanya Mahaprabhu and part of that introduction, Caitanya Mahaprabhu speaking and He says by hearing the meaning of that verse, meaning verse number two which we are now going to study little bit one can forget all unhappiness and lamentation. So that verse is

namnam akari bahudha nija-sarva-saktis
tatrarpita niyamitah smaranena kalah
etadrsi tava krpa bhagavanmamapi
durdaivam idrsam ihajani nanuragah [[CC Antya 20.16]

Translation: My Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, in Your holy name there is all good fortune for the living entity, and therefore You have many names, such as “Krsna” and “Govinda,” by which You expand Yourself. You have invested all Your potencies in those names, and there are no hard and fast rules for remembering them. My dear Lord, although You bestow such mercy upon the fallen, conditioned souls by liberally teaching Your holy names, I am so unfortunate that I commit offenses while chanting the holy name, and therefore I do not achieve attachment for chanting.’
Lord has names like Krishna and Govinda and so many many unlimited names. There is one list called Vishnusahastra nama, how many names of Vishnu? Thousand names. Then there is Gopal saharsta naam also, Gopal’s thousand names and Narsimha He has thousand names and Balarama has thousand names and Gauranga has thousand names, Gauranga sahastra nama and Radharani sahastra nama like that at least thousand and there is no limit.

So each of these name as we are understanding here is like expansion of the Lord. Lord expands in the form of His holy name. Lord has invested all His potencies in His names and there are no hard and fasts rules for remembering them. Caitanya Mahaprabhu is teaching, He is talking about Himself. I am so unfortunate. Lord is taking our position. He is speaking on our behalf as if we are addressing the Supreme Lord, the Lord Himself talking here in Siksastaka that is by putting those words in our mouths. I am so unfortunate that I commit offenses while chanting the holy name and therefore I do not achieve attachment for chanting.

anek-lokera vancha—aneka-prakara
krpate karila aneka-namera pracara [[CC Antya 20.17]

Translation: “Because people vary in their desires, You have distributed various holy names by Your mercy.

Different kinds of personalities, people have their different levels or evolutions of God consciousness Krishna consciousness. Hence, He has many names anek-lokera vancha–anek prakara, so many desires so many people, so many levels hence so many expansions so many different names. Some are personal names, principal names like Krishna, Govinda. Some are secondary names like Ishvara or Parameshvara or Brahma or Paramatma. So all these anek-namera pracara, because people vary in their desires You have distributed various names by Your mercy.

khaite suite yatha tatha nama laya
kala-desa-niyama nahi, sarva siddhi haya [CC Antya 20.18

This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s comment on the same verse. khaite suite, while you are eating, while you are sleeping, tatha nama laya. Chant His name, kala-desa-niyama nahi, kala the time, desa, the country or place, niyam nahi, there is no rule, no hard and fast rule sarva siddhi haya, just chant,

“Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare”

Just chant the holy name sarva-siddhi haya. This all perfection in chanting the holy names. These Siksastaka prayers are glorifying the holy name. And so the chanter keeps chanting the holy names with more faith and more understanding more attachment that’s the idea. This is all glories or this is like the mahatmya of the holy name. Like everything has a mahatmya, dhama mahatmya, many mahatmyas. Srimad Bhagavatam mahatmaya. Mahatmya means greatness or significance what is so special about whatever then there is the mahatmya. Like the mahatmya of cocacola is also there I mean what the advertisement that goes on the television. What is it? It is mahatmya. All varieties of products are glorified in kingdom of maya, so that people will be convinced about the product. Then they would like to buy. So these different mahatmyas.

We were in Bombay some time ago and we saw mahatmya of some drink cold drink. We saw a person young man summer season and he had opened his heart, Hanuman opening his heart. What was in the heart of Hanuman when he opened? Jai Shri Ram, Sita Rama. But this young man from Mumbai Bombay as we were driving down town for preaching mission we had to see. What we could do, happened. We saw big hoarding and we saw young man and with close look what he was trying to show in his heart. There was a Limca bottle. So this is mahatmya, mahatmya of Limca bottle. You take anything and everything. They all trying to glorify maya, package maya, glorify maya while this siksastaka is, is glorifying the holy name the greatness of the holy name mahatmya of the holy name, in the words of Mahaprabhu. Anybody could glorify and I mean that glorification of the holy name throughout sastras and acaryas have glorified. But here Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu is personally glorifying the holy name in the form of this Siksastaka.

So by hearing these glories of the holyname, param vijayate sri krisna sankirtanam, idea is one who understands the glories significance of the holy name he would take to the chanting seriously. He would take to the chanting first of all and of course seriously or even more seriously. We may be serious but these glories as we go through they would make us even more serious, chanting, serious chanter, chanting attentively, chanting offenselessly, which is a subject matter of this verse also. Let’s finish Mahaprabhu’s few more comments about this verse

sarva-sakti name dila kariya vibhaga
amara durdaiva–name nahi anuraga!! [CC Antya 20.19]

Mahaprabhu says sarva-sakti name dila. Lord has invested all His energie, tatrarpita, tatra arpita in that holy name. arpita He has invested nija-sarva-saktis. His whole energies He has invested. Sarva-sakti name dila amara durdaiva, but it’s my great misfortune, name nahi anuraga, name nahi anuraga. I have no attraction for this nama, this chanting.

ye-rupe la-ile nama prema upajaya
tahar laksana suno svarupa-rama-raya [CC Antya 20.20]

And then now He is going to be introducing following verse. Mahaprabhu is commenting, “Oh, yes but then how could one develop attraction for the chanting? How could one develop attachment, anuraga for the chanting?”And then He would say the third verse, trinadapi sunicena He would say. So before we get to that verse we will talk little more about the second verse, namnamkari bahudha nij-sarva-saktis. So in the commentary He says that sarva-saktis, Lord has so many different saktis, vividhaiva suyate. Lord has so many varieties of saktis. He is saktimana and saktimana has sakti or sakti come from saktimana or one is full of sakti he is saktimana or He is Bhagavana.

Aisvaryasya samagrasya viryasya yasasah sriya? (Vis?u Pursna 6.5.47).

These are the six opulences of the Lord and one of them is His virya, His prowess, His energies, His strength, He is strong, strength comes from Him.

So all those energies He has invested in the holy name. So in the commentary even the sakti of the dhama, you go to dhama and you benefitted because the sakti in the holy dhama. But the sakti in the holy dhama is also in the nama or you perform some yajnas, Rajasuya yajnas and there is some sakti, some benefit you derive by the performance of the yajna, Rajasuya yajna that sakti, that benediction also included in the holy name. Like this different saktis, the form has the sakti, form of the Lord all those saktis like a all in one, like we say two in one, three in one. Radio and what, what else also TV also, the two in one, three in one but this holy name is all in one. That is why it is said harer namaiva kevalam harer namaiva is enough. Is holy name enough? Of course. There is nothing more. It is complete.

om purnam ada purnam idam [Isopanishad Invocation]

Applying that principle, whatever comes from the Lord it is purnam. The holy name comes from the Lord as Lord’s name all energy is in there and it’s complete and perfect

nama cintamanih krsnas caitanya-rasa-vigrahah
purnah suddho nitya-mukto abhinnatvan nama-naminoh [CC Madhya 17.133]

The holy name is caitanya rasa vigraha, rasa- the juice or the mellows. Vigraha personified all the mellows are there, all the rasas are there. Caitanya is full of life. There is ecstatic not static, like this table. Table is static. Matter is static the holy name is Caitanya is full of life, lively in move, like if chanters chants and attains perfection then that caitanya inside the holy name in contact with the Lord begin shaking the body. Now this is not a genuine thing, this is demonstration like those who chant

mahaprabho kirtan-nritya-gita
romanca-kampashru-tarang-bhajo
vande guroh sri-charanaravindam

So the holy name or the soul comes in contact with the holy name and the holy name is caitanya rasa vigrah. As and the soul comes in contact with that caitanya rasa vigraha and becomes more nitya suddha eternal pure and mukta liberated. The holy name is non different from the Lord.

abhinnatvam nama namino

abhinna not bhinna not different from Nami. Nami means whose name, nama is the name and nami is Krishna whose name is Krishna. So not two, they are one. So such holy name as soul comes in contact with such holy name then that soul begins trembling. Romanca and all the symptoms are there they will roll on the ground, laugh or sometimes cry, sometimes like a pillar stop, motionless like a pillar. All these symptoms as soul comes in contact with the Supreme soul in the form of His holy name caitanya rasa vigraha.

So all Lord’s energies are in the holy name and nama reveals rupa, form of the Lord and then the relationships of the Lord and the pastimes of the Lord and abode of the Lord. All these things are further unfolded, revealed unto the chanter of the holy name. So chanter of the holy name has access to the Lord in the form of His holy name. So this,

namnam akari bahudha nija-sarva-satis tatrarpita

So all the energies are there niyamitah smarnena kalah, smaran, nama-smaran, smaran of what? Smaran means remembrance. There is a something called nama-smaran. There is lila smaran. There are different smarans, different things you remember in relationship with the Lord and when relationship with the holy name, it is nama-smaran.

As one does nama-smaran remembers the holy name that holy name is not very far from the holy form of the Lord. Not very far, even to say not very far, the holy name is the form. The holy name is qualities of the Lord. Holy name is pastimes of the Lord. Holy name is dhama of the Lord. Non different, you cannot draw line, ok this is form and this is the name and this is something else this is qualities, pastime this side and abode that side. No, they are same person has different svarupa, different manifestations. So Nama prabhu, Lord appears as Nama Prabhu.

kali kale nama rupe krsna avatara

Nama is one rupa, nama is one form of the Lord. Radha Madhav that is the form of the Lord but name is form of the Lord. So nama rupe krsna avatara.
Lord appeared in the form of His holy name and He has all the energies and full of potencies, potent form and there are no hard and fast rules for chanting these holy names. Even a dog could take part Prabhupada even dog could take part in the chanting. And five hundred years ago Caitanya Mahaprabhu as He was walking through the forest of Jharkhanda which is North part. After Bengal comes the next state Jharkhanda. This is new state now few years ago one state of Bihar was divided into two. One remained as a Bihar and another state another part of Bihar became Jharkhanda.
In Caitanya Caritamrita, in Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s pastime in Jharkhand forest, there was one state, one of the state of India called Jharkhanda not far. So Mahaprabhu there as He was chanting then you know that some dogs were there, tigers were there, the deer were there, the birds were there flying in the sky they all chanting and dancing in ecstasy and they were embracing each other. They gave up all their bodily concept. The deer and the tiger they were embracing each other they were kissing each other, alingan and chumban the words have been used.

So otherwise karma kanda and pancaratriki vidhi, so many rules and regulations but for chanting there is no hard and fast rule. Khaite, while eating, while sleeping. I just heard one story, one person said, “I have no time and I am so busy so many things to do.” Hare Krishna devotee said “You chant. You should chant, there is only way.” “I have no time. When could I chant? Only free time I have is when I am in toilet.”“Ok, no hard and fast rule, you chant there.” So this person, he was chanting Rama’s name in toilet and then our Hanuman, he realizes someone in the toilet chanting his Rama’s, his Lord’s name been chanting in the toilet. So Hanuman became very angry. He manages to slap or kick that person.“Aye! What are you doing here?“ “You know what I am doing and also I am chanting.”“But not here.” He gave a big kick.

So then next Hanuman was massaging the body of Sri Rama and massaging feet and hands. Then he came to the backside of Rama and Hanuman noted, “Hye! What is this mark, who has done this to you, my Lord? No, no, no don’t worry, forget it. Just keep massaging”. “No, no, no please tell me. One who has done this I will punish him”.“No, no, no”.“Please tell me, please tell me”. Then Rama had to tell, “You know, such and such person in Calcutta, he had no time to chant my name. So he was told there is no hard and fast rule you could chant anywhere and he was chanting. But then someone called Hanuman was not happy with this and then he did, whatever he did and you could see.” And then Hanuman felt very very bad, that although Lord was pleased with that person’s chanting even in the toilet Hanuman says, “Why is he not following rules and regulations why is he”? A humorous kind of pastime but the point is no hard and fast rule.

hunandhra-pulinda-pulkasa [SB 2.4.18]

From any country, kalua sudra sambhava, that is already there, everyone has gone so low in their consciousness. All become sudras but they could also chant holy name.

stri-sudra-dvijabandhunam trayi na sruti-gocara

The women, the sudras they cannot chant the Vedic mantras. But they could chant Hare Krishna mahamantra. The holy name is for anybody, from any country, from any age, man, woman, child, rich, poor, day, night, morning, evening, inside, outside, while eating, while sleeping chant the hole name of the Lord. So all this Caitanya Mahaprabhu is talking in this verse. All this kind of discounts or licenses has been given in this age of kali to the chanter made it easy, God realization made easy, just by chanting, no hard and fast rules. But in conclusion Caitanya Mahaprabhu says, “durdaivam, I am so unfortunate that I have no anuraga, I have no attraction, I have no attachment for this chanting.
idrsham iha na jani anuragaha, najani, not taken birth na ajani, ajani na anuragaha. That attraction has not been born, It’s not, it’s not there for the holy name. Rupa Goswami says,

no jane janito kiyadbhir amrtaih krsneti varna-dvayi

Rupa Goswami said in this Krshna, varna dvayi- two syllables, these Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna Krishna he there is so much nectar in this holy name, in this krsneti varna dvayi, two syllables just two letters, Krishna. So much nectar, unlimited nectar in this name Krishna. Rupa Goswami says this because his chanting is of different kind of chanting. And the mood that Mahaprabhu is exhibiting here confessing, admitting, “But I have no attraction”. Rupa Goswami has attraction, six Goswamis had attraction, Haridas Thakur had attraction. So many devotees have attraction. That Aindra prabhu has attraction for chanting the holy name.“But I have no attraction.” Durdaivam, this is my misfortune. And although it had not been mentioned in the verse the cause for not having attraction that is not stated in the verse but acaryas could read in between lines or could understand something that had not been stated.

It is to be understood, why not attraction? The obvious answer is because of my offenses. I am so unfortunate that I commit offenses while chanting the holy name therefore I did not achieve attachment for chanting. So offenses aparadha sunya haiya laha krsna nama Bhaktivinod Thakur says, “You chant the holy name, how? aparadha sunya hoiya. You are allowed to commit offenses. How much offense you could commit? Zero. Yes, yes you could commit offenses, go ahead. How much offense? Zero.aparadha sunya, shunyawad, means no offenses. Aparadha sunya haiya laha Krsna nama, this kind of holy name as one chants,

nadiya-godrume nityananda mahajana
patiyache nama-hatta jibera karana
sraddhaban jana he sraddhaban jana he

Nadiya-godrume not far from here is dvip called Godrumdvipa and in there five hundred years ago Nityananda Mahajana, he started nama hatta what is next? Patiyache nama hatta jibera karana. Nityananda Prabhu has opened Nama hatta. What for? patiyache nama hatta jibera karana for the benefit of the people of this age of kali, Lord has opened, started this nama hatta, the market place of the holy name. So sraddhavan jana, faithful, “O!, faithful people come. Come, come chant the holy name, but how? We have to chant aparadha sunya haiya laha Krsna nama. Chant offenselessly. Then anuraga is guaranteed.

So if you have time then, then you could get into the offense topic. There is whole chapter in ‘Nectar of devotion’, ten offenses against the holy name, nama aparadha. And on the top of that list is vaishnava aparadha vaishnava ninda, offending vaishnavas. They are so very dear to the Lord and you offend them this way and that way. There are so many ways of offending vaishnavas. So study and understand these offenses. There is nama aparadha, there is dhama aparadha and there is seva aparadha, there is arca-vigraha, deity worship aparadha, different kinds of aparadha. And amongst them there is nama aparadha. Bhaktivinoda Thakur’s Harinama Chintamani, he had devoted, dedicated one of his writing project, he wrote a scripture Harinama chintamani for understanding these ten offenses, what are the symptoms? How to understand this offense? How do I know which offense I am committing? Is it vaishnava aparadha or is it first one or tenth one, sixth one which one am I committing and how to avoid?
But at the same time Caitanya Mahaprabhu here He is pointing out that those who wish to derive full benefit of this chanting which is full of all the energies of the Lord and one who wishes to develop anuraga for the holy name what he has to do? How should he chant and then the next verse number three,

trnad api sunicena taror iva sahisnuna
amanina manadena kirtaniyah sada harih [CC Antya 20.21]

So one solution that has been stated, “Oh! I am, I am an offender of the holy name”. “Oh prabhu why don’t you chant?”“You know my chanting is offensive. So I decided to stop chanting.”That is easy way right? You know it is better not to accept spiritual master than accept and then disobey his order. “Oh, why you have no guru?” “I thought you know, I may be committing offenses, so just to avoid committing offenses I decided not to accept guru it is easy right? It is easy. Then I will not be committing any offenses. I don’t chant because I am offender. No!! Your chanting is offenseless you certainly keep chanting and if your chanting is offensive do not stop chanting. Chanting and chanting the way to become free from offenses. One way is keep chanting the holy name of the Lord, kirtaniya sada hari or if we wish to keep chanting the holy name then how could we achieve that stage of chanting all the time constantly? Chanting kirtaniya sada hari, and Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s formula is the four points, four elements are there. One is trinadapi sunicena. We should have read this consequently

uttama hana apanake mane trnadhama
dui-prakare sahisnuta kare vrksasama [CC Antya 20.22]

So uttama hana, all the devotees or some devotees may be advanced but even that advanced devotee think they have no attraction. That is also possible. I have no love for the Lord. He may be full of love but that is one kind of nature of a devotee. Dui-prakare sahisnuta kare vrksasama. So this is understanding. The two kind of understanding that devotee is expected, to be as tolerant as the tree or even what, more tolerant, more tolerant than the tree. eva and api the two ways of this mantra taroreva sahisnuna or tarorapi sahisnuna like, like the tree, tolerant like a tree or more tolerant than a tree. The two ways that verse goes

vrksa yena katileha kichu na bolaya
sukana maileha kare pani na magaya [CC Antya 20.23]

So, vrksa if someone cutting the tree, this is Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s statement, then it doesn’t say anything. If someone is cutting the tree, tree just tolerates and may be drying up because of drought, no water, still doesn’t asks for water, just keeps drying up, tolerates the hunger and thirst situation.

yei ye magaye, tare deya apana-dhana
gharma-vrsti sahe, anera karaye raksana [CC Antya 20.24]

So in the midst of vrsti, the torrents of rain or it is very hot sun, the tree doesn’t, keep standing wherever it is. Tree doesn’t ask, “Hye, get me umbrella!” A devotee is walking by the tree and it is raining. Tree doesn’t say “Hye, prabhu or you all the prabhus, you stand up and climb up and hold your umbrellas above me.” Then twenty devotees on the top of the tree, umbrella for the, no. So whatever situation these tree is tolerating.

uttam hana vaisnava habe nirabhimana

So the devotee may the uttam or first class devotee, situation elevation, but he has no abhimana, he has no false pride

jive sammana dibe jani krsna-adhisthana [CC Antya 20.25]

He is respecting everyone and one reason he is respecting everyone, every jiva, because he knows next to each jiva there is Lord, Lord is there or this jiva is my Lord’s jiva, my Lord’s atma. In Isopanisada also this is there. Those who understand Lord is in everything and in everyone, this is the way to become free from the hatred. The hate and love are just opposite. So we are expected not only to love the Lord but love the devotees of the Lord and respect them. So this is possible by knowing that Lord is in everyone, feeling. And to Lord jiva, the living entities are so very dear to the Lord so if I offend jiva, jivedaya. This what we expect jive daya name ruchi vaisnava seva. The compassion for the souls that way you respect the soul, you worship the soul, you worship the devotee.

Lord is great, God is great so we like to worship Him but worship devotee, become devotee of devotee. We do not always think like this. We should be thinking I am a devotee. We always I am a devotee of Radha Madhava. O! I am devotee of Radha Shyamsunder. O!I am devotee of Jagganatha. O! I am devotee of Sri Rama. But Lord is pleased when He knows, such and such devotee is devotee of my devotee. O! then he is my devotee. He is my devotee. Another famous this Lord’s statement, “One who thinks he is my devotee, he is not my devotee but if he is devotee of my devotee then he is my devotee.” So again the devotion for the devotees is not just lip service but practical. That is why then Rupa Goswami is giving sad-vidham priti-laksanam, six ways of expressing your priti, your love, affection for devotees.

Dadati pratigrhnati, guhyam akhyati prcchati,
bhunkte bhojayate caiva, sad-vidham priti-laksanam [NOI verse 4]

So this Mayapur festival this year is what, is theme of this year festival, loving exchanges, six loving exchanges, six loving dealings of devotees. This is theme of this Mayapur festival. Opportunity for us to cultivate this priti-laksanam, the symptoms of the devotion for the devotees of the Lord. We should be thinking each day, today I want to serve this devotee in this way, that way, make some plan, I want to serve feast prasadam, help carrying somebody’s baggage or whatever small way big way practical, it’s not just a lip service, theoretical. While in theory I accept yes the devotees are my worship able object but beyond the lips talking is also beginning, thinking talking. The Lord will be so pleased and then kirtaniya sada hari is possible.

One thing is being tolerant like a tree and respectful towards other living entities, fellow brothers, sisters and of course at our level according to the advice of the acaryas and Rupa Goswami. We love the Lord and serve Him. We are friendly with the devotees. Friendship amongst the equals. It’s not all one again, some levels, we serve senior vaisnavas. And the third thing is jivedaya, the faithful people, we try to help them up, helping hand, help them up, serve them prasad with the helping hand. With the hand you could give prasada. With the hand you could give book. With the hand you could give, the holy name. With the hand you could play drum or kartal, so help them out. But if there are big big demons which you cannot handle, big size demons then you could offer pranama from distance. Bye! We can make safer distance, avoid them, stay away or bring some bigger devotee and then let them face. I cannot manage doesn’t means other cannot face with him and defeat him. Maybe we could think. So our side we could manage, we can handle others we can turn them over to some other stronger devotee.

So through this trnadapi sunicena taroriva sahisnuna amanina mana den. Not expecting any respect for oneself ourselves. But it is such a difficult thing. It is other way around. We don’t like to respect anybody but we would like everybody to respect us instead. This is conditioning this is kind of training, upbringing and brainwashing that goes in this world. Who talks the language of trnadapi sunicena except Gaudiya vaisnavas or vaisnavas or some religionist. Who is talking like this? Forget it, these are the values. There is no value to this. You enter the material world and everything is upside down. No one wants to be dasa. Everyone wants to be boss. No dasa, boss and the top, no humility, pride, the first competition. And Caitanya Mahaprabhu in Varanasi as He was invited by Prakasananda Saraswati. He has sixteen thousand followers. So Mahaprabhu arrived and there is big asana, some kind of waiting for Him next to Prakasananda Saraswati.

But Caitanya Mahaprabhu as soon as He arrived He just sat down near the entrance where people washing their hands and leaving their shoes. There is no asana nothing. Mahaprabhu came and just sat down there out of humility. He wasn’t expecting any respect big honor big sit. He just sat down but that did big preaching. Prakasannanda Saraswati, “Oh! Look He is sitting there, right there sat on the floor.” The half of the preaching success was that humility part. He is humble. These mayavadis are always proud, aham aham,I am somebody. Not just ordinary body but aham brahmasmi. The last layer of maya. No one proud as proud as mayavadis are so proud. The materialists are proud. Impersonalists are proud. Everyone is proud in this world.

janma aishwarya sruta sri

Four Kunti Maharani says, four things, high birth, aishwarya, your wealth, your learning, your beauty these things become stumbling blocks. False pride into these things which is all temporary and then for this expecting all respect, then how could such person chant the holy name? There is no kirtaniya sada hari. kirtaniya sada hari becomes possible as one cultivates these four items mentioned here. Tolerance, humility, respecting others, not expecting respect in return. These four items, the more we study sastras, more association, more hearing, more we realize how, how tiny jiva, how insignificant we are, then we would become humble. We are made humble, we are humble by nature. We are humble. So to know ourselves, we have to know ourselves, then to know the Lord. Who am I? Who the Lord is? and we become humble, humility is one of the quality of vaisnava, meaning it is the quality of the soul.

Soul is humble by nature vidya vinayen sobhate. So we try to acquire knowledge. vidya dadati vinayam, vinay means humility. So vidya dadati as one acquires vidya, whether someone has acquired vidya or not how could we find out? See how much humble whether he is humble or not humble if he is humble then we can, “Oh!Yes, he is very good student. He has done studies. He has attained perfection. He is humble.”This is natural consequence or natural outcome result of doing the studies, studies of the sastras. Gita Bhagavat hearing and we know dasosmi and then we become humble. Then we also respect others. jivedaya vaisnavseva serve others and in that state of mind one can chant holy name of the Lord constantly. The next verse

Caitanya Mahaprabhu forth verse
na dhanam na janam na sundarim
kavitam va jagadisa kamayem
mama janmani janmanisvare
bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi [CC Antya 20.29]

So Kirtaniya sada hari, as one chants the holy name, what is the mood of the chanter? What is he asking for chanting? What is one asking for? Ya! please give me service, please engage me, please engage me. I am your servant, please engage me in book distribution. Please engage me. Please engage me. Then whatever humble service I could render. So as one does kirtaniya sada hari, as one chants the holy name then Lord is pleased. How do we know whether Lord is pleased or not pleased? He is engaging us. We have been chanting all morning and then temple president gives, temple commander gives some service. Then we say, “Oh! Lord is pleased with my chanting. Just see Lord has arranged some service for me.” The chanting results in getting service of the Lord. Chanting itself is a service but one should not hide behind the chanting. Some devotee says, “Oh Prabhu, I have not finished my rounds.” At eleven o’clock, I have not finished, at 2 o’clock, I am still chanting and even at 8 o’clock at night he is still chanting and he is chanting and chanting. I am busy, so is this serious chanting.

So one could be busy with chanting also. I was reminded when I was just a new bhakta, long time ago in Mumbai it was morning time and our temple president Giriraja, he was not swami that time he was just a brahmacari and he was chanting his rounds and one life member he had come and I happened to, he was looking for the president of the temple and I happened to meet this gentleman. He said, “Who is president here? I would like to see him. Could you please bring me to your president?” So I went to temple and Giriraja was chanting, chanting nicely seriously. Then I told, “One life member is here and he would like to see you.” And but he said, “No go and tell that life member that I am busy.” So my first thought was, what? you are not busy. You are just sitting around, just sitting and chanting. Because you don’t want to see him you are just giving some excuse that you are busy. So this were my kind of neophyte’s thoughts or offensive thoughts that time.

Later on I realized that one could be also busy. But chanting is a serious business in fact, the best business. So if someone is chanting seriously then if service comes to him, he would jump and do that service or he would also plan some service or there may be some instructions, do this, some direct service or general instruction and direct personal instructions of the spiritual master. Two kinds of instructions, you do this, disciple you do this, direct. Chant Hare Krishna, follow four regulative principles, read Prabhupada’s books general instructions. So to follow that, so kirtanitya sada hari and then this devotee he says, “O Lord! please engage me. Ahaituki, I want service causeless or unmotivated service. He begs for unmotivated service.

na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va

All these things, it’s a part of this material world. We ask for give me this, give me that, house by the beach. Badrinarayana Prabhu was saying that give me this kind of car or that kind of car, jai Jagadisa Hare swami Jai Jagadisa Hare and house by the beach and this color television jai Jagadisa Hare. So that was another business. This is a different. Caitanya Mahaprabhu says,na dhanam na janam, no wealth, not for me, not for my gratification of. So there are some of them they even don’t want to touch. No, no, no brahma satya jagat mithya, only jagat is jagat is false. Only reality is brahman.

So vaisnavas are not like that. So this na dhanam, but it was centennial time, 100th birth anniversary. As a minister of centennial, global minister of centennial I had my time to offer report and prayers to Radha Madhav, as GBC few days ago also. So my prayer was, “My dear Lord, please give dhanam. We did big glorification of Srila Prabhupada doing the 100th birth anniversary, funds required. So dhanam and also some janam, lots of people lot of devotee power. So we can’t reverse that prayer but because it was for the Lord, Lord’s pure devotee’s service then dhanam, yes please, dhanam please. Again like in some temple early morning prayer, I think in Los Angeles, also in Delhi, few temples, ‘Please send, o Lord, please send some devotees, sankirtana devotees. We want to increase book distribution, o Lord, please send us some devotees, some man power, so janam. Janam is people. But not into this kavitam. ‘Name, fame, glory same old story’ [laughter].

So we should leave that story behind as we enter. There are some easy things to give up. One way is give up this dhanam janam sundarim, but then this ‘puja labha pratistha’ these are even harder things to give up. Following four regulative principles this is damn easy. Any talk we can carry to do this; I mean kind of following four regulative principles is not such a big big thing. Bigger obstacle on the path, puja desire for being worshipped, some profit, some honoration, worship and glorify. And these things harder, these anarthas very very subtle. So many sadhakas, religionist they may give up their life, may be sinless, they are not committing any sin, following regulative principle but stuck with this puja labha pratistha.

Narsimha dev said,” Prahlad ask for some benediction.” Prahlad says, “No, no, please don’t encourage me to do so Lord.” No no my dear Lord, what are you talking? I don’t want to be like a merchant dealing.

yas ta asisa asaste na sa bhrtyah sa vai vanik (SB 7.10.4)

One who has desires one who comes to you and asks for this boon, that benediction, he is not your devotee. He is just a merchant. ya asisa, give me this baksisa, asisa, this benediction, this boon this, that na sa bhrtyah. He is not your servant. He is not pure unmotivated devotee. He is just a businessman. Prahlad Maharaja said this in Bhagavatam.

So none of this dhanam janam sundarim, this is for us to work on this. This is not just some story about someone else somewhere, no, it applies to us. Each one of us. So we may have learnt this verse by heart. It may be at our tip of tongue, say, what is the forth verse? dhanam janam sundarim kavitam, we say. We also say the mantra and translation word meaning everything. But then we were talking, yesterday, there is accumulation but there should be assimilation. Mahaprabhu is commenting just finish this na dhanam na janam na sundarim. So that’s like a big obstacle on the path of devotional service, “jnana-karmadyanavrtam ”. So this dhanam janam sundarim, this is all karma and karmi affairs and the bhakti has to be transcendental to karma and jnana. So this dhanam janam sundarim, this is karma items, karmic and what is jnana part, janmani janmani isvare, those who are jnanis, impersonalists they are hankering for liberation.

Chatanya Mahaprabhu says , mama janmani janmanisvare birth after birth after birth. I am not against taking birth. I don’t mind to be born again. So not caring for liberation, not caring for liberation, so this is transcending this Brahma realization or Brahman, karma jnana.

anyabhilasita-sunyam jnana-karmadyanavrtam
anukulyena krsnanusilanam bhaktir-uttama [Sri Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (1.1.11)].

Bhakti is uttama bhakti, tama means ignorance. utta means above, above ignorance, transcendental to ignorance. In karma, certainly this is all full of darkness. But even brahman there is darkness in brahman there is some ignorance, ignorance of Paramatma, ignorance of Bhagavan, the realization of brahman is there. But ignorance of Paramatma, an ignorance of Bhagavan because they know only one aspect, two more aspects are not part of their realization. So there is darkness there is ignorance. So one who has transcended this, there is uttama bhakta or there is uttama bhakti. So in this verse this sikshashtaka, free from karmatendencies that kind of mentality and free from jnanaa. So karma, jnanaa and yoga these are the three kind of main paths. Bhagvada gita also taught karma, jnanaa, yogabut then not again ordinary kind of yoga but bhaktiyoga.

yoginam api sarvesam mad-gatenantar-atmana
sraddhavan bhajate yo mam sa me yuktatamo matah [BG 6.47]

So topmost thing is bhakti yoga. So give me bhakti my dear Lord and bhakti has to be or when it is free from jnana and karma then it is bhakti otherwise this some kind of bhukti is there. Some kind of motivation is there, gratification is there. So praying for pure devotional service because I am servant, that would be said in the next verse, why you should, why I am asking for service, because I am servant that would be said in next verse. What is servant expected to do? Servant if not serving then he is not servant. So ayi nanda tanuja kinkaram that comes the next, before that’s for tomorrow, so before we end we will read just few comments by Caitanya Mahaprabhu on this verse,

dhana, jana nahi magon, kavita sundari
suddha-bhakti’ deha more, krsna krpa kari [CC Antya 20.30]

So Mahaprabhu says, He said the verse na dhanam na janam. Then He said, “na dhana na jana magi, I am not asking for dhan, jana, wealth followers kavita or sundari, suddha bhakti deha more, give me bhakti, suddha bhakti, pure devotional service, Krsna krpa kari. O Lord, please be kind to me, kripa kari give me.”

ati-dainye punah mage dasya-bhakti-dana
apanare kare samsara jiva-abhimana [CC Antya 20.31]

ati dainya punaha mage, so Lord is asking Caitanya Mahaprabhu in that mood that’s says in translation that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu again expressed His desire to be endowed with service to the Lord. He beg for service to the Lord and how He is going to be begging that service, in what words that is the subject matter of the next verse.

ayinanda-tanuja kinkaram
patitam mam visame bhavambudhau
krpaya tava pada-pankaja-
sthita-dhuli-sadrsam vicintaya [CC Antya 20.32]

So that verse we will discuss tomorrow. You could see how this continuity going from one verse to another, giving some kind of link. There is a relationship, one verse to the other one, there is revolution getting it condensed more and more. One thought leads to the other and other and so we are half way through, we completed four verses and there four more in next few days. So a task ahead of us. Did anyone do homework? Yesterday we gave you homework to do. Who remembers yesterday’s homework? Remembering slokas was a homework. At least you remember what the homework was. Good! At least someone remembers and mananam, meditation, contemplation, that’s important. So don’t leave this subject matter just in pandal as you walk out, leave this behind and then take it up again the next day as you enter. No, carry this with you even in the bathroom, even there you could think. Then Hanumana may come or he may not come. And discuss amongst each other. Keep this subject matter alive and fresh. This is very important, listening is most important thing to do and then keep thinking of that subject matter is even more important or most important. So who did someone memorize any of the verses? Eight verses yesterday? Did anyone learn? No? May be already knew these verses. Yes, that’s why. One mataji said, “Ya, we already knew.” Yes, stand up. Say the verse, which one did you memorize which verse did you remember. Give her microphone.
(One mataji recited verse, haribol!! Nice!

So let’s go little deeper, also good to be by yourself always surrounded by devotees just good. So as we come in contact with the devotee when time you should be churning that subject. Think more so that it becomes our, it is also said that when you hear with the idea of sharing that subject matter with someone then what happens? While hearing you are thinking. “O, today I am going to share this with somebody or when I go back to France or whatever I am going to share this with my family members or my temple devotees.”With this aim in mind if you hear then what happens you will have to remember, you will remember, you will have to remember. Otherwise how could you share that with others. In order not to forget you will have to keep fresh. In the evening I am going to meet someone also so all day you will be from time to time at least you will be thinking, “I have to say this, I have to share this after few weeks I have to share this.” Like this we remain fresh. So good to note down things. That’s another way of remembering things or even if you forget sometimes you can look at, open and look. So please stay in this mood.

Question: I am doing sixteen rounds daily I feel formalities just doing sixteen rounds in Krishna conscious how can I improve?
Answer: I think this is a good question. Is that? Although one person has asked this question. This is good chance that this is not only his question but question of many of us. Yes, you are not the only one. You feel bit relieved now for you are thinking I am the only one in this situation. So I think this the main solution to this is getting up early and chant your rounds before your business hours or before the phones begin ringing phones, before people begin knocking at your door, before your office hours, before people get up and begin making noise pee…pee…bho…bho…honking horns. So once, if you have finished only half of the rounds then during the day the mind is already invested, distracted this way, that way thinking and then bringing it back and focusing on hearing with attention and concentration that it becomes more tough job.

Not that one couldn’t do it but the most favorable circumstances for chanting the holy name are the morning, morning hours. So those who face this difficulty, I think for the round chanted in the morning I think are, but then one may try to I have only so much time now before I leave so and rushing through the rounds because we have to do the quantity, sixteen quantity then quality drops. You are sacrificing the quality but if you have sufficient time it takes about two hours, little more little less. So of course with two hours so if those two hours could be the morning hours or it is also advised that if you are not able to finish in the morning then some time of the day again when you have no business you are free or you designate such and such time, this is my chanting time.

Like we were talking of that example of my temple president and he was so busy when chanting that he did say to me go tell that life member I am busy. I am busy fixed up I can’t move now I could not I am busy committed to the chanting. Not that as soon as phone rings and we run and we are chanting and with left hand we are doing this that or looking here looking there finding that’s, we are, that’s a halfhearted job. You are not there in that chanting you are not investing yourself fully because you are not hearing it or not hearing with the with the proper mood. ayi nand tanuja kinkaram, I am your servant, please, please engage me. I am yours, Lord. That mood like a crying like a baby. Prabhupada says chanting crying like a baby. So if you do not cry please remember you are expected that kind of mood. So early to bed early to rise. Person has difficulty getting up early morning. Actually difficulty more difficult thing is to go to bed on time. Getting up early is not difficult, going to bed is difficult. People just don’t go to bed early. They stay busy with different affairs and then goes to bed late and then body requires so many hours of rest in order for you to get relief from fatigue and mind is fresh. Then you wake up and when you again chant after body has sufficient rest and mind rested then you chant and also you can absorb that chanting you are tired and you are yawning and sleeping still chanting struggling because you have to do your quota that’s a subject matter. I don’t have attraction ajani, ajani not taken birth. What has not taken birth? Raga attachment because that verse says my offenses. So there are ten offenses, yes but then not chanting attentively or inattentive chanting is source or cause of those ten offenses. Bhaktivinoda Thakur’s analysis, so if your chanting is inattentive you do not become free from these ten offenses all the ten or five or few or one offense will be committed by you if that inattention inattentive chanting is there.

So most important thing to do, doing chanting with attention and morning hours are favorable and when we are not deep needed or no demands we are just committed this is my time for chanting when you just do that you can try to improve, following this guideline, how to chant in the morning, quite peaceful hours, mode of goodness time. Mornings are in mode of goodness, day is full of passion and the night is ignorance. Of course one could transcend these three modes. Haridasa Thakur is chanting in the middle of night but he is not influenced by ignorance of the night. He is chanting during the day he is not influenced by passion. But that not the case with us. So we cannot imitate. So we could take the advantage of the best time, the favorable time season. A businessman always knows; o this is a good season for making this money or selling this part of the good season. So good season for chanting is morning. Yes you have to say in the microphone.

Question: Srila Prabhupada said that we have to chant at least sixteen rounds Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Maharaja said if you don’t chant one lakh you are fallen. So how to consider this?

Answer: Prabhupada is merciful. But he said minimum sixteen, minimum sixteen. So you could chant more. Prabhupada also gave us lots of service, more than Gaudiya Matha, Bhaktisiddhant Gaudiya Matha. Ya, so many missionary activities, distribute books and food for life and build the temples centers of Krishna Consciousness, Farm projects and Harinama parties and padayatras and festivals. So this would not happen if we keep chanting all day but one could of course Bhaktivinod Thakur also says, namasraya kari jatane tumi takah apan kaje

That while you are working, you are chanting. You chant while working. hath me kama mukha me nama. Service in the hand and holy name in the mouth. You can keep your hands and mouth busy in the same time. So while service the chanting doesn’t stop. So we may not be chanting on the beads as such but there is chanting and when there is param vijayate sri Krsna sankirtanam. Sothe definition of sankirtan is not limited. It’s kirti, it’s glories. Chanting the holy name in sankirtan or that is the whole sankirtan moment to be expanded and that is sankirtan. Building temple in Juhu Mumbai and Prabhupada was staying next door and construction site, so much khat khat, all those sounds were going on, hammer, so devotees were proposing, “Prabhupada, this must be bothering you. We will shift you to another location. You could stay peacefully.” Prabhupada did not agree he was saying these, these sounds were like a music to his ears. these sounds khat khat phat phat, whatever this was service of Radha Rasabihari as temple of Radha Rasabihari was under construction. Even those sounds was kirtan, sankirtan. So you could chant, you could distribute books, you are also chanting, the book you are bringing to other

Question [not clear]
Answer: Prabhupada introduced chanting in the west or in New York. The rules and regulations they came much later. In the beginning he was just encouraging everyone to chant. That 26 second Avenue storefront ‘Matchless Gift’ anybody everybody, they were coming with their girlfriend boyfriend, with the boots, long hair, smelly bodies, he was there, take bath. If you go to South Indian temple you have to wash your hands and feet, you go to Jaggannatha puri at the entrance you have to wash feet and mouth. But Prabhupada no restrictions, everyone was welcome whether they are clean or not clean. Most important is ya smaret pundarikaksam sa bahyabhyantar suchi. If one could remember the Lord, lotus eyed Lord, sa bahyabhyantar suchi he would become clean bahya externally internally. So keep chanting and that leads to the remembrance, chanting results in remembrance, sarvanam kirtanam visnouh smaranam that is perfection. This is side issue. So we said if someone is committing offenses, the main solution that rectification of solution is chanting. Chanting itself is a means and the goal. So on the side there are few rules, main rule is chant. kirtaniya sada hari is the main rule. You don’t follow that rule and you follow so many other, you have learnt namapradha and this and that, you became learned pandit and you know all yama-niyama, do’s and don’ts and vidhi and nisedha and but not chanting then you would nowhere. But in the midst of some of the offenses of being committed, if you continue chanting then you will take care. So more emphasis is on chanting and not on the offense part, that is real, the main rule is chant. Then you take care of other things. And the spiritual master is giving us some guidance, his examples, he is giving, giving us Krsna in the form of, at the initiation time Guru is giving us Krsna or he has already given some siksaguru has given already us Krsna in the form of the holy name and the formality of diksa. He gives knowledge, he gives holy name and as one accepts this, then ksa, kshay he becomes free from the reactions of the sins committed in the past. So the word diksa is explained like that. Guru gives the holy name, the holy scriptures, holy dhama. We were talking yesterday how Srila Prabhupada revealed this dhama unto us or revealed pastimes of Caitanya Mahaprabhu unto us. Lord made him nimittmatram and then by coming in contact with these gifts in the form of holy name and holy scriptures and holy prasad then our connection is made with the Lord and we become free from reactions also. So this is Lord’s arrangements this is how Lord works.

Question [Not clear]
Answer: We became qualified to chant other mantras by chanting first mahamantra. You chant the holy name and you are no more sudra. Your sudra business finished, smashed. You are more than a Brahmin. You go ahead, chant different mantras, so with the help of shelter of the holy name mahamantra you can, you became qualified, you became eligible, in every possible way. Prabhavisnave namaha, Lord is powerful. His name is powerful. So all those punindra pulkasa, all those castes and countries mentioned in Bhagavatam. One who takes shelter, he may be from Magnolia from Afghan, from Andhra, from Pulinda one time these were countries now there are different names so you don’t know which one is which. There is some, Prabhupada is pointing out in the purports, this country was Kasya, this country was Pulinda, this is Pulkasa so these were, people were low born low qualities. Even people of those countries taking shelter of the holy name they transcend because of the power of the mantra, the holy name.

Question: Is chanting of mahamantra sufficient?
Answer: Mahamantra is sufficient. Mahamantra includes all the mantras all the prayers. So whether you could stick to chanting,

“Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare”

Then you have chanted all the mantras, all the prayers. So when we chant mahamantra it is sufficient. Ok we will stop here.

Srimad Bhagavatam teaches us know the Lord

Srimad Bhagavatam teaches us know the Lord
Krishna Lila Vrindavan Pastime Part 3
Venue: Durban, South Africa
11 07 2007

Hare Krishna, say ‘Hare Krishna!’ Thank you for coming again and again and again you could come . This is good, coming again and again to see Lord Krishna, to His lotus feet. May you be never tired of coming and hearing, haribol!!!

We shouldn’t only come to the temple for darsana of the Lord. His darsana becomes more possible in the pages of Bhagavatam and Bhagavad Gita. That’s the way to see the Lord, not with the eyes but with the ears, that’s how we see Krishna. In the very beginning of Bhagavatam there’s talk even of Lord’s returning to His abode and the statement says,

krsna sva dhamopagate dharma jnanadibhih saha (S.B 1.3.43)

He took everything, even jnana, the knowledge, everything He took everything with Him and as a result there was a total darkness. That was the age of kali. Darkness was everywhere, not being able to see. See but not see at the same time. Seeing the world, seeing the matter is not really seeing. See beyond the matter or see beyond the material existence. See something that is out of this world.

The first time I came to South Africa and visited this temple, as I entered I kind of understood the term that we use ‘Something out of this world’, haribol!!!. The first time I came in here (shouts of haribol)! In the airport and then on the way to the temple, that was the world, that is the world but then when I came in here and had darsana of the deities and all that which we are seeing here, I thought ‘This is out of this world!’ So eyes could see things beyond matter, a personality who is the source of this matter, a personality who is the controller of this matter.
So when Lord departed, when He took everything with Him.
Kalau nashta drisam esha [S.B 1.3.43]

Some people lost their eyesight and at that time the Lord kindly arranged

puranarko ‘dhunoditah [S.B 1.3.43]

This Purana, Srimad Bhagavad Puran, is described as brilliant as sun. Bhagavatam which is brilliant as sun appeared over the horizon. It appeared in this world. The Lord returned or disappeared and Bhagavatam appeared in place of the Lord. This is as good as the Lord and can try to give us better eyesight but what do we see with our eyes or glasses? Not much. We need ‘divya chakshu, castra chakshu, Srimad Bhagavatam’ to acquire that vision.
Srimad Bhagavatam ki Jai!

I am trying to say something to glorify Bhagavatam. One time North America devotees were travelling, preaching and distributing books. One particular party they had so many books for carrying that they had no additional space for deities to be carried, so that devotees could offer arati to the deities. So they approached Srila Prabhupada, the whole thing is full of books! Gita and Bhagavatam so there is no room to have deities to be worshipped.’ Prabhupada said ‘Put the books on the alter and worship the books, worship Bhagavatam’ [Haribol]. So that is as worshipping the Lord. So Sukadeva Goswami ki jai!

As he was about to begin recitation of Bhagavatam, he was going to do that for seven days and seven nights. Sometimes (they ask) why seven days? The solution to a big problem of dying. We all die within seven days you would be all, me included would leave in these seven days.

Means someone will die on Monday, someone Tuesday, Monday, Friday, that means in seven days everyone dies [laughter]. So if you hear Bhagavatam for seven days then no more birth, no more death. A kind of reward that we get. And just the liberation is not the goal of recitation of Bhagavatam. Demigods probably found that way so when they got the news that King Parikshit, ‘he has been cursed to die within seven days!’ Then they rushed to Hastinapur and by that time, Sukadeva Goswami he had already taken his asana to recite Bhagavatam and the Demigods arrived. They said ‘We have Amrita, we have nectar.’ With churning of the ocean, the demigods did a big churning of the ocean and different items emerged. Finally the amrita was there. Kumbha mela time the amrita comes back again and everyone comes, hundreds and thousands of, millions of people come to get that nectar. So they said ‘We have some of that nectar! Please offer this to king Parikshit and in exchange you could give us Bhagavatam, Bhagavatamrit. We have amrit so in exchange of this amrita you give this to king Parikshit to become immortal and give us Bhagavat in exchange.’

Sukadeva Goswami said ‘Get lost, you do not understand the value of Bhagavatam.’ It is not meant only for becoming amar or attaining moksha, becoming immortal. Bhagavatam gives something beyond mukti and that is bhakti. We were discussing yesterday how bhakta gets Bhagavan through bhakti. This bhakti sastra, by doing bhakti we get Bhagavan.
Granth Raj Srimad Bhagavatam Ki Jai.

sachidanand rupaya vishvotpatyadi hetve
tapatraya vinashaya shri krsnaya vayam namah

The Lord is Sac-cid-anand. He is the cause of creation, maintenance and destruction of this whole existence, and He could also become the cause of tapatraya. The three kinds of miseries are adhyatmika, adhidaivika and Adhibhautika. Sri k???aya vayam namah, to such Sri Krishna who could pray to make us free from tapa traya vinasaya. Unto such Lord Sachidananda, Sri Krishna vayam namah, we offer our most humble obeisance’s.

King Parkshit, of course he had seven days then he was hearing Bhagavatam for seven days. If you have seven months you should be reciting Bhagavatam for seven months and if you have seventy years at your disposal, you should be reciting Srimad Bhagavatam, hearing Srimad Bhagavatam for all those seventy years. Nityam Bhagavata Sevaya is in fact the recommendation.

nityam bhagavata sevaya
bhagavaty uttama sloke
bhaktir bhavati naisthiki

Recite Bhagavatam constantly, all the time. Bhaktir bhavati- you will achieve bhakti. Irreversible, the listener of Bhagavatam gets established his relationship with the Lord and he doesn’t get any further U-turn, becoming mouse again. He keeps going, moving forward because he achieves bhakti which is nistha. Yesterday we said in the beginning that there is a need of shraddha, but shraddha could be komal shraddha – tender.

By hearing Srimad Bhagavatam we become dridha shraddha, nisthavan. Dridha shraddha becomes nisthavan by reciting Srimad Bhagavatam. The goal for King Parikshit and each one of us is to ‘ante narayana smrtih.’ ante – at the time of death, remembrance of Narayan, if you could remember Narayan at the last breath. It does become difficult during those last moments.

kanthavarodhana-vidhau smaranam kutas te [Mukunda Mala Stotra 33]

Translation: When my voice would get choked up by kanthavarodhana – mucus, kanthe ghura ghurayate – it becomes tough to remember the Lord as of course one king, king Kulasekhar says ‘now is the time my dear Lord. Let my mind settle in thinking of you.

krsna tvadiya pada pankaja panjarantam
adyaiva me visatu manasa raja hamsah [Mukunda Mala Stotra 33]

My mind, he is comparing his mind with a swan and ‘dear Lord, with your lotus feet, your feet which are lotus-like and my mind which is swan like, let them be together, lotus and swan. Now is a good time for remembering you my Lord.’

So ante narayana smrtih, remembrance of the Lord.

yam yam vapi smaran bhavam tyajaty ante kalevaram [Bg 8.6}

So what we remember at the time of death determines our future. So we need to practice remembrance of the Lord. It won’t just happen {clicks fingers}. Practice, we are remembering the Lord. Practice could make us ladies and gentlemen perfect. We sent few devotees, they were in Haridwar and they saw that some big free coca-cola distribution was going on, free coca cola. Devotees were seeing so some were enquiring that ‘how come? There’s also Ganga jal here, you can have water and nimbu pani also’ [lemon water]. ‘Those kinds of things including charanamrita so why is coca-cola on free distribution?’ So as devotees were a little curious they found that a few brothers were there ‘Our father departed you know’ they said ‘our father died.’

They said ‘that’s fine but what has that got to do with the coca-cola distribution?’ So the brothers they said ‘You know at the time of our father’s departure he was remembering coca-cola. He was a devotee of Bhola, Shiva.’ So they said ‘We kind of kept reminding him that ‘father father please say Bhola. You only have a few more breaths to go so say ‘Bhola.’

‘No, no get coca-cola.’ His sons were really endeavoring, making a special appeal ‘Daddy, daddy please, please say Bhola.’ The last thing daddy said was ‘coca cola.’ So the sons were kind of executing the will of last minute, what he said it was ‘coca cola.’ Anyway their father went to Coca-Cola loka [laughter].

The goal is ante narayana smrtih, Krishna smrtih, and Bhagavatam helps us to remember the Supreme Lord all the time including the time of the last breath as well.

Grantha Raj Srimad Bhagavatam Ki Jai!

If you say ‘just remember the Lord’ it would be difficult. But if you say ‘Do you remember my friend?’ ‘Oh, which friend are you talking about? Where does he stay? How does he look like? Please tell me all this and then I can tell whether I remember him, whether I have met him before.’ So how could anyone remember the Lord? Remembering the Lord is remembering his name, fame, glories.

sri radhika madhavayor apara madhurya lila guna rupa namnam
prati ksanasvadana lolupasya vande guroh sri caranaravindam [Guru Astaka ]

Our acaryas, predecessor acaryas have set an example before us. Prati ksanasvadana lolupasya, at every moment they have become addicted, addiction for hearing. What do they hear?

Radha madhavayor apara, Radha Madhava or Radha Radhanath guna rupa namnam.

His name, His qualities, His pastimes, His abode. So Srimad Bhagavatam helps us. ‘Here is how the Lord looks like!’ And then you could remember the Lord, by seeing His form you could remember the Lord. ‘These are His qualities, His wonderful qualities.’ So we do not know and we do not love the Lord, maybe not enough because we do not know Him enough. The more we know Him, the more we would love Him. He is the most lovable object in the form and not just any and every form, we have an eternal relationship with that person Sri Krishna. This is just revival, by hearing Bhagavatam, our relationship is revived and established and further solidified. The bonds of relationship and love and affection become stronger as we hear about the Lord. Chant His holy names.

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare

So chanting the holy names and hearing Lord’s pastimes, worshipping the Lord and His form and rendering lots of services unto the Lord. As we said that the Srimad Bhagavatam is a bhakti sastra so it teaches us how to first understand the Lord, know the Lord, serve the Lord.

So yesterday we heard of the Lord’s appearance in this world, how many years ago? Probably there are 300 different answers [laughter].I couldn’t process all those. The Lord appeared, He exists. The world is still debating that ‘Does God exist?’ All debate going on and here we are talking that the Lord appeared. So here is the exact date, the year and everything. We need to know, it’s available, the knowledge is available. You could even go to those places where Krishna performed His pastimes, the hill that He lifted. The Govardhan hill is there. Seeing is believing, go see the footprints of Krishna here and there all over Vrndavan. You are very close ‘Oh! Footprints of Krishna right over here!’ Some devotees try to touch, their hands tremble as they try to touch that spot and then they take that dust and they smear that all over their bodies. ‘They eat some of that dust that Krishna entered. Oh! This rock was touched by Krishna’s lotus feet and this dust is touching that footprint, let this dust enter me.’ Then they take a little pinch and eat, Krishna enters them in that way.

Prabhupada used to say Distribute books

Prabhupada used to say “Distribute books!

Venue: Vrindavan

01 12 2016

Today is the first day of the marathon. It’s a very auspicious day. Srila Prabhupada’s transcendental book distribution ki jay. So we should be talking, remembering book distribution service as Diti asked to do. She was asked to do worship in a given process. For us also, we worship brahmins and acarya, we serve our acarya Srila Prabhupada. One of the best services we can render on to Srila Prabhupada is by distributing his books. Book distribution was very dear to his heart. That service was given to Srila Prabhupada by Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Thakur. Right here on the banks of Radhakunda when Srila Prabhupada had come from Allahabad to join his Guru Maharaja.

Prabhupada was asked if you would ever get money print books. Then later on Bhakti Siddhanta Saraswati Thakur Said: “You preach in the western world in the English language.” In the same Vrndavan at Radha Damodar, he was doing lifetime preparation. When He was translating his books, there was no help. Prabhupada was translating, typing, editing, proof-reading, traveling to Delhi in a low-class train. Now that trains are not running. They are abandoned now. He used to travel that type of low-class trains. Giving his books printed there. There is a place called Chhipiwada near Red fort. He was promoting that as an office. There is a Radha Krsna temple where he is allowed to use the facility. That was his office. And one place in Vrndavan that is Vamsi Gopal Temple that was his home also. He was promoting that. And Prabhupada was getting his books printed. Sometimes he would carry paper on his head, just to save rickshaw money and getting books printed. Sometimes he would be coming to the print press without eating. He would save money for book printing. After the books were printed, the printer would not give all the books. The printer used to say “You sell this when you have money we will give you more books”. Like that Prabhupada took so much trouble to translate and the print and publish his books. That was his instruction by his spiritual master.

And then he went overseas with those books. And on the boat Jaladuta, he sold those books to captain Pandya. He sold books worth 20 dollars. So Prabhupada had 40 rupees when he arrived in New York and he also had 20 dollars. And then book distribution continued in New York. Prabhupada was personally selling books in the books stores in sell or return basis. He would travel by bus, check how many books have been sold or not sold and check all the transactions. And then gradually the book distribution was picked up by his followers. Initially, there were some Bhagavatam but not so many copies. Millions of copies of Back to Godhead were printed. Time Magazine used to print thousands of copies.

So Prabhupada used to say that Back to Godhead also should become popular like that. And he used to call Back to Godhead as the backbone of ISKCON. Smaller and bigger books were being distributed all over the planet. In 1976 7 million books were distributed by followers from around the world. Prabhupada was pushing the book distribution. He used to say “Distribute books! Distribute books! Distribute books!” That was his instruction. Of course, he also wanted his books to be read. He had complained. Complain was disciples were not reading his books. Prabhupada wanted his books were meant for reading. Prabhupada was expecting that his followers, his disciples, grand disciples, his family members would read his books also then distribute his books. So that book distribution which is also considered as Gaudiya Vaishnava’s family business.

One business we do is printing and distributing books. Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Thakura had his printing press right in the temple. The deities could see the printing press. While printing the deities were able to see that printing press. He called that as Brhad mirdanga. The sound of this mridanga, the sound which is packed in this would reach far and wide. Bhakti Siddhanta Sarasvati Thakura was into printing and distribute books. So Srila Prabhupada took that very seriously and that is like a number one service or business. Prabhupada used to say “He will not die, he will stay alive in his books forever.” And he would feel very very enthusiastic when a big pile of mail used to come through the post. There was no E-mail in those days. The postman would deliver a big bundle and Prabhupada would prefer to hear the sankirtan reports from those who were doing correspondence secretarial jobs during the last days. The reports would be the book score from various devotees like Rameshwar, Gopal Krishna Goswami or some temples. He used to give priority to such mail and used to hear those books scores.

I remember in November 1977, just one week before Prabhupada’s departure we were also distributing books. The whole world was distributing books, each one us were into book distribution. Pujaris would also rotate. They would also want to go and distribute the books. I had a traveling party that distributed books. The name of the party was Narada Muni traveling sankirtan party. And we were traveling like Narada muni all over. We had come one week before to see Srila Prabhupada and as we were allowed in his quarter. Prabhupada was off course lying on the bed. I reported my traveling party to Srila Prabhupada, he was so anxious and happy to hear. He asked, “Which book is selling the most?” He was hard, barely able to speak but he was enquiring, enthusing me to go on. He told, “Say more about book distribution”. And I remember I said one thing to Srila Prabhupada. That time I returned from Badrikasram. For distribution books, we had gone all the way to Badrikasram. And then returned to see how Prabhupada was doing health wise. So we reported to Prabhupada. I said, ” Srila Prabhupada while we were in Badrikasram, we had gone to see Vyasa cave (The cave of Vyasadev), so there we showed your Bhagavad Gita As It Is to Srila Vyasadev.” I thought Srila Vyasadev resides in the cave, we didn’t see him but for sure he is seeing us and the Prabhupada books. So I said, “We showed your books to Srila Vyasadev.” Srila Prabhupada liked it.

So this book distribution was very very dear to Srila Prabhupada’s heart. Books are the basics and preaching is the essence, purity is the force, the utility is the principle. So you could utilize those principles, strategy to distribute books. And this year is Srila Prabhupada’s ISKCON Golden Jubilee celebration year. And this is the last month, last chance. We have been glorifying ISKCON and ISKCON is glorifying Srila Prabhupada. They are not separable. Sometimes Prabhupada would say “ISKCON is my body.” So this is the last month. The best we could do in this month is to distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books. I think it is GBC and book distribution ministerial together has a proposal for all of us, all the followers and members of ISKCON including members of the congregation, even visitors of ISKCON and those who are benefitted by ISKCON, each of those devotees have to distribute 50 books this year. Minimum 50 books as this year we are celebrating 50 years of Srila Prabhupada’s ISKCON. Is everyone ready? This is the minimum.Prabhupada used to double it, triple, quadruple. Like Chanting, 16 rounds is the minimum. In one Conversation When I asked Prabhupada “Just 16 rounds Prabhupada “. He said you could chant 16000 rounds, who could stop you? But the minimum is 16 rounds. So I mean devotees distribute 1000 of books, there are such devotees amongst us. There are so many ways and means to distribute books. So get ready and I am sure this time devotees having special istagosti to make a strategy to distribute books. This morning I heard yesterday’s scores. They were just normal. Nothing big and special. I hope from tomorrow onwards scores have to be doubled and tripled and quadrupled. So devotees don’t have to wait for the people to come here, you have to go to the people. Make some plans like that. Go to Mathura, and towns nearby and everywhere.

By hook or cook, yena kena prakarena you distribute Srila Prabhupada’s books during the marathon. December is the month in which Krsna spoke Bhagavad Gita. This is also the reason we distribute more books in the marathon and emphasize the distribution of books. On the 10th of this month, there is Mokshada Ekadasi. The Battle of Kuruksetra would begin on that day and Krsna spoke Bhagavad Gita during morning hours. Battle used to begin in the morning and go on till sunset, then they would take a break and then get together. Even they would meet enemy friends. And next morning again they would become enemies and do battling and fighting. During early morning hours, Dh?taras?ra spoke,

dharma-ksetrekuru-ksetre
samavetayuyutsavah
mamaka?pan?avascaiva
kimakurvatasanjaya

Translation: Dhrtaras?ra said: O Sanjaya, after my sons and the sons of Pandu assembled in the place of pilgrimage at Kuruk?etra, desiring to fight, what did they do?

gita sugita kartavya kimanyah shastra vistaraih
ya svayam padmanabhasya mukha-padmad vinihsrita [Gita Mahatyam]

Translation: The wonderful song called Bhagavad Gita has been spoken by the lotus mouth of the Supreme Lord Krishna Himself. What other scriptures do we need to seek then?

Something that comes out of the mouth of Krsna is also Krsna. So Bhagavad is non-different from Krsna. So when we distribute Bhagavad Gita that means we are distributing Krsna. It is Krsna in the form of His speech and sound.

krsna se tomara, krsna diteparo,
tomara sakatiache
ami to kangala, krrsna krsna boli
dhai tava pache pache

Translation: Krsna is yours. You have the power to give Him to me. I am simply your servant running behind you shouting, “Krsna! Krsna!” [OheVaisnavaThakura song by BhaktivinodaThakura]

That Krsna is with you in the form of Bhagavad Gita, you could give that Krsna to others, be kind and share Krsna to make the whole world Krsna consciousness. Caitanya Mahaprabhu also gives this instruction:

yare dekha, tare kaha ‘krsna’-upadesa
amara ajnaya guru hana tara’ ei desa [CC Madhya 7.128]

Translation: Instruct everyone to follow the orders of Lord Sri Krsna as they are given in the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. In this way become a spiritual master and try to liberate everyone in this land.

nadhauta-padaprayata
nardra-padaudak-sira?
sayitanaparannanyair
nanagnanacasandhyayoh [SB 6.18.51]

This is Kasyapa muni speaking to Diti, giving various series of instructions.

Translation: You should not lie down without having washed both of your feet or without being purified, nor with wet feet or with your head pointed west or north. You should not lie naked, or with other women, or during the sunrise or sunset.

This is list of do’s and dnt’s. Please repeat.

dhauta-vasasucirnityam
sarva-mangala-samyuta
pujayetpratarasatprag
go-vipransriyamacyutam [ SB 6.18.52]

Translation and purport by Srila Prabhupada ki jai.

Translation: Putting on washed clothing, being always pure and being adorned with turmeric, sandalwood pulp and other auspicious items, before breakfast one should worship the cows, the brahmanas, the goddess of fortune and the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Purport: If one is trained to honor and worship the cows and brahmanas, he is actually civilized. The worship of the Supreme Lord is recommended, and the Lord is very fond of the cows and brahmanas (namobrahma?ya-devaya go-brahmana-hitayaca). In other words, a civilization in which there is no respect for the cows and brahmanas is condemned. One cannot become spiritually advanced without acquiring the brahminical qualifications and giving protection to cows. Cow protection ensures sufficient food prepared with milk, which is needed for an advanced civilization. One should not pollute civilization by eating the flesh of cows. A civilization must do something progressive, and then it is an Aryan civilization. Instead of killing the cow to eat flesh, civilized men must prepare various milk products that will enhance the condition of society. If one follows the brahminical culture, he will become competent in Krsna consciousness.

So Diti vows to kill king Indra, is the title of the chapter. Just to protect king Indra and the company, the Lord has killed Diti’s two sons, first Hiranyak?a followed by Hiranyakasipu. And of course, this was too much for Diti to handle the loss of two children. And they were killed just to favor Indra. And the killer is of course Vishnu. So she is not tolerant and also envious of Indra. So now she wants to kill that Indra who kind of became the cause of the killing of her two sons. So now she wants to give birth to a son who would be the killer of Indra. She has approached her husband Ka?yapa muni and she has confidentially disclosed or revealed her mind. She said “I want your help! help! help! My dear husband.”

Then Kasyapa Muni has come with some strategy. You do some do’s and don’ts, as a result, you will have a son and for sure he would be the enemy and killer of Indra. And off course, you have to do perfectly well, flawless. If there is any flaw or any shortcomings that will spoil the whole thing and the son to be born, instead of him becoming a killer of Indra, he would be a supporter and friend of Indra. So it was ok with her. And of course, where we stand now in this chapter she is in the middle of receiving the instructions, the process. The first verse that we read has the nishedha part (Don’t do this), the second verse which we read says you do this. This has been spoken by Kasyapa Muni. The verses which we read says nadhauta-padaprayata. Before you lie down make sure you have washed both the feet.

Both feet have to be washed. nardra-padaudak-sirah. Then you have to wash and wipe them dry. They should not be wet before you sleep. That is taken care of washing, then wiping the feet, making them dry. Make sure when you lie down your head is not towards the north and not to the west. Nanyair, when you lie down, there should be no one else. But you alone. Nanagna, make sure you are not naked. And do not lie down. Two times mentioned, sandhyayo?. The joint of the night and the day that is morning, another joint of day and night that is evening, so during these two periods, you should not lie down. Quite a details list. All these rituals. Much easier to just chant Hare Krsna. Not to worry about all these details and then no hard and fast rule also.

Translation: “My Lord, O Supreme Personality of Godhead, in Your holy name there is all good fortune for the living entity, and therefore You have many names, such as K???a and Govinda, by which You expand Yourself. You have invested all Your potencies in those names, and there are no hard and fast rules for remembering them. My dear Lord, although You bestow such mercy upon the fallen, conditioned souls by liberally teaching Your holy names, I am so unfortunate that I commit offenses while chanting the holy name, and therefore I do not achieve attachment for chanting.

There are no hard and fast rules for chanting. Here there are lots of them. And not easy also to follow in the age of kali. So we are asked just to chant Hare Krishna. But Kasyapa Muni goes on, and this is to do part. This is easier. This is something we could also do.
dhauta-vasa, make sure your clothes are clean. sucirnitya?, always being cleaned. Sarva-mangala-samyuta, and once done this purification part, clean clothes etc. She is a woman. You could put on some ornaments. Your body could be decorated with turmeric, sandalwood pulp. Not lipstick and the whole cosmetic industry. During Vraja Mandal parikrama we recommended all the ladies to take some Vraja raj with them, take the dust of Vrndavan and just applied that whole over body or face. The body will be sanctified, purified and beautified also. That’s not going on, but instructions are here for the civilized society.

Pujayet, you worship, pratarasatprag: before breakfast, you have to do puja and puja of go-vipran. Personalities are mentioned. You worship cows, Brahmana, Laxmi (The goddess of fortune) and Supreme Personality of Godhead. And then Prabhupada is highlighting,

Translation: “My Lord, You are the well-wisher of the cows and the brahmanas, and You are the well-wisher of the entire human society and world.” [Visnu Purana 1.19.65]

This is done in a civilized society. They worship the cows and the Brahmanas. There is a culture of worshipping Brahmanas and cows. Even Lord worships the cows and Lord worships the Brahmanas. Krishna – Balarama takes care of the cows. Krishna has one job, one service He has. Everything is past times. But He has one job to do that is all day He has to take care of cows.

Translation: He who sneaks around to steal yogurt and butter, then hides to eat it, and who tends the cows in the company of His cowherd boyfriends – unto He who is the reservoir of playful pastimes, I offer my most humble obeisances again and again.

Our God is herding cows all day long. He also does stealing. Our God is a thief. He steals butter that comes from the cows. It’s like salary He gets. The fruit of His labor. He is laboring hard taking care of the cows all day long. In return, He gets little butter. This is all He gets for taking care of the cows all day long. Krsna has set the standard of serving Krsna and serving brahmans and also honoring brahmanas.

namobrahmanya-devaya

He is the worshipper of the Brahmanas and cows. Sudama brahmin came to Dwarka visiting his friend. He was a poor friend of Krsna but was a Brahmin. Lord Krsna was sitting with Laxmi (Rukmini) on the throne. As soon as He saw, He didn’t even take permission from her, He ran and rushed and He welcomed him by deep embrace. And the Lord was shedding tears. That way He was doing abhishek of Sudama brahmin with His tears. He brought him into the palace. He made him sit on the same throne on which He and Rukmini used to sit. Brahmin didn’t even have the proper clothes. Very thin and skinny body. But Lord Krsna worshipped him. He offers worship to the cows. He serves the cows. He even massage the calves’ feet. When the calf is tired and straggler (left behind) then Krsna picks him up and carries him.

Or Krsna may sit down with the calf on his lap and do gentle massage to the calf. He is grazing them all day long. That is serving the cows. He was very anxious to serve the cows and the calves. And Krsna from Gokul they came over to Vrndavan. Krsna was 3 years and 8 months old only, He proposes that He want to serve and take care of cows. Yashoda was not in favor of His proposal. She said, “You little boy, still drinking my breast milk, you never left home or our home town.” In Gokul, Krsna used to be just in town. He has never been out of the town. Now He is proposing I will go to the forest to take care of cows. And then Yashoda and Nanda were having a debate. She was not in favor nor letting her darling Krsna go into the forest at such a tender age.

But Krsna was insisting that “No no I want to go.” He was anxious to serve the cows and calves. Nanda baba was in favor. And In this way, Krsna had become vatsapal. the calf herd boy. That was the first service that He was given. But as He grows in age and become more competent. When He becomes 5 years old (pauganda) all the assembled Vraja -vasis decided in favor of Krsna becoming a cowherd boy. Krsna was very eager to care and serve cows of Vrndavan. And the cows also were very eager to be in the company of Krsna all day if that was possible. Cows were not going into the forest without Krsna. Cowherd men were struggling to bring the cows into the forest, but they were making a U-turn and come back and be there in front of Nanda bhavan. They said if Krsna will not come with us then we will fast and will do a hunger strike. And the cows were just sitting there. They were serious. They would not go. So Gopas were compelled to make a decision.

This is His manifest past times. He is taking birth and then He is a young boy. Then He begins the herding the cows. This is manifest lila. But it is eternal pastime, unmanifest lila. He is always a cowherd body. Eternally herding and serving the cows, watering the cows. He brings them to various kundas. There are so many kundas in Vrndavana so that cows can graze in the forest, grazing lands and fields and when their belly are full they also need water, so they brought to nearby kunda. When Cows drink water, Krsna also likes to drink water. He drinks the water, the way the cows drink. Cows don’t use their hands or feet for drinking water. They just directly drink with the mouth. So Krsna also right there on the bank of kunda, He bows down with His hands on the ground and He begins drinking the water the way cows drink. He likes to imitate the cows.

Krsna loves and serves the cows. Krsna entertains cows with His flute playing. I think I was talking about this on Gopaasthmi day also. When their bellies are full they sit down and then they chew their cud. Then Krsna climbs up the tree and plays His flute and while they are chewing the cud Krsna entertains them with the sweet flute. Krsna is playing flute for their pleasure. So many dealings for the service and pleasure of cows and the service of brahmanas also.

Caitanya Mahaprabhu returns back way to Vrindavan

Caitanya Mahaprabhu returns back way to Vrindavan

[1.01.16]

Venue: Durban

Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu took sannyasa at the age of twenty four. Of course could Lord be just twenty four years old? I could be twenty four; I was also twenty four old one time. So that is age of my body, Lord’s body is eternal. This is how we end up saying yes when He was twenty four years old, He took sannyasa, for the benefit of whole world. That sannyasa initiation aroused additional devotion within the heart of the Lord. Well, He is playing the role of the devotee, Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krsna Himself and not only just Krsna but He is also Radha Rani.

sri krsna caitanya radha krsan nahe anya

We say He is not different from Radha and Krsna, but as He is playing role of a devotee, bhakta avatar. He is experiencing intense love for the Lord, which was resulted additional love, which was resulted by this sannyasa diksha. The first thought that Caitanya Mahaprabhu had, was I would like to go to Vrndavan, where is Vrndavan? I want to go to Vrndavan.

Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu was just totally absorbed in Krsna. Where is Krsna? Where is Vrndavan? Few devotees, Nityananda Prabhu and two more devotees were accompanying the Lord. Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, came across some cowherd boys. He inspires them to chant, “Bolo Krsna, Bolo Krsna, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna” and they chant Hare Krsna, may be difficult for me to get you to chant Hare Krsna but for Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He is the Lord, He is the Lord of their hearts. So, yes they were all chanting and Mahaprabhu was going closer to them and blessing them, touching their heads.

So Mahaprabhu asked them which way is Vrndavan? Could you please tell me which way is to Vrndavan. And Nityananda Prabhu, he had already kind of prompted, these cowherd boys, if this sannyasi inquires from you which way is to Vrndavan. Just tell Him, go along the banks of Ganga that way, this is Nityananda prabhu’s trick. So the cowherd boys, you want to go to Vrndavan, this is the way just go on the banks of this river and then Caitanya Mahaprabhu was going that way, chanting and dancing. Caitanya Mahaprabhu as you know, He never walked. Did He fly by Air Mauritius, He only danced or He walked but His walking is so artistic like a actor, when He walks, you could watch His steps, its pleasing.

So Mahaprabhu would walk, but only dance and Nityananda Prabhu was following Him. Caitanya Mahaprabhu was was totally absorbed in His, the mood of Krsna. And at one point He notices that Nityananda Prabhu is also following. He said, “Hey, where are you going? I am also going to Vrndavan. So they are walking after some distance Caitanya Mahaprabhu inquires, How far is Vrndavan from here, to this inquiry Nityananda Prabhu said, “Oh, you have reached Vrndavan, here is Yamuna” and as Mahaprabhu heard that He was in Vrndavan and here there was Yamuna, immediately His ecstasy increased now thousand fold and He jumped into the river.

Jai Jamuna Maiya ki Jai……
Jamuna Maiya ki Jai………….
Vrndavan Dham ki Jai………….

At some point , he was kind of finished with his holy dip of Yamuna, but he had no additional garments, he had wet clothes and there He sees Advaita Acarya, I have some clothes for you my dear Lord. Seeing Advait Acarya Caitanya Mahaprabhu, oh how come, how did you know that I was in Vrndavan, soon Mahaprabhu realised and he was thinking, have I come to Vrndavan or am I in Shantipur, in his home town. And that is what had happened, this was trick of Nityananda Prabhu and this was planned that Nityananda and Advait Acarya bring the Lord to Shantipur.

So that residents of Navadvipa (Mayapur) and specially Saci Mata would have another opportunity of having audience with the Lord. So there he ends up, Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He was in Shantipur and devotees in great number turned up for darsana and Saci mata was invited to come, she comes running, she takes her Nimai, in her lap and profusely shedding tears as if she was doing abhishek with her tears. Abhishek of her nimai, Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu spent several days in Shantipur, specially doing kirtans, big kirtans, for long many hours of kirtans that was life of Gauranga Mahaprabhu, chanting and dancing, Kirtaniya sada Hari, always chanting. Always chanting the glories of the Lord, always chanting the holy name.

So this is place, Saci mata knew Nimai has taken sannyasa, of course you cannot come back home, I know that but could you stay in nearby holy place, of course you could go to, where ever, the whole world is open for you, you could go to Durban also. Door- van oh that, that Van, which is at the long, long distance, Door, because doordarshan, door-van this is one of the vans, one of the vans like Vrndavan, door-van, like another van, another forest. So you could have stayed in Vrndavan or Haridwar or Banaras or Pandarpur or so many places. No, no you please stay in Jagannath Puri, which is not far from Navadvipa (Mayapur) and I will get news from time to time. Devotees from Navadvipa (Mayapur) could visit you more conveniently, so no problem.

Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu gladly accepted the proposal of Saci mata and then he proceeded for Jagnnath Puri. Chanting and dancing again accompanied by a small group of devotees. Caitanya Mahaprabhu proceeded towards Jagnnath Puri and now as they are very close to Jagannath Puri.

Jagannath Puri Dham ki Jai

They could see, Jagannath Puri and at this place Nityananda Prabhu had broken “Danda”, Caitanya Mahaprabhu had taken sannyasa but Nityananda Prabhu took away “Danda” of Caitanya Mahaprabhu and broke into pieces and threw it away, you have nothing to do with this Varna-asram. You don’t have to accept sannyasa and have all these symbols. Caitanya Mahaprabhu was bit annoyed with avadut, Nityananda Prabhu is avadut, he is above the rules and regulations and he didn’t want Caitanya Mahaprabhu also to follow such rules. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu as He was bit disturbed with this act of Nityananda Prabhu, should I go by myself to Puri and from that point onwards Caitanya Mahaprabhu kind of ran towards Puri leaving the main party behind, as if he was getting pulled up by Jagannath, the powerful magnet.

As Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu entered Jagannath Puri temple and as He saw Lord in front of Him. He couldn’t even utter the full name Jagannath, well we could say nothing happen much to us, but for Him, He could only say, Jag- Jag and His voice was choked up and He fell unconscious losing all the external consciousness. He fell on the temple floor, in the temple hall there was a great personality Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya, well he had seen others in the past coming and exhibiting this ecstasies but just as show, they were show portal, the fake ones, Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya was very curious to understand ecstasies, the symptoms of this personality of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He lifted Mahaprabhu and bought Him to his own residence and examined all the symptoms and he realised that this was not an ordinary bhava but this was mahabhava, genuine symptoms of ecstasy. As soon as the main party arrive, they had darsana they were expecting Mahaprabhu to be there in temple waiting for them, but that wasn’t the case. There was no Mahaprabhu in the temple, as they inquired, they were informed you go to Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya’s home, probably you would find him there. Then all the devotees ran to Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya’s home, they found Lord totally unconscious, they all started chanting and the result was, some good reason for us to sing also, or as by singing this way, we try to become part of that party, Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s party. I tried experience that we are also there and we are witnessing this pastime and we are hearing that party singing and then we also sing along. So Mahaprabhu gradually came to external consciousness. Haribol,

Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu ki Jai.

So, this is how Mahaprabhu entered Jagannath Puri, because He was thinking of Lord Jagannath all the time on the way to Jagannath Puri as “Akrura” was thinking of Sri Krsna on the way to Vrndavan from Mathura. Srila Prabhupada reminds us, this is the way, if we are going to Vrndavan, go to Vrndavan the way Caitanya Mahaprabhu went to Jagannath Puri or the way Akrura went to Vrndavan. You cannot purchase a ticket, train does not bring you, plane doesn’t bring you to Vrndavan, to Jagannath Puri, the mood on the way to Puri or Vrndavan will bring us there. Otherwise our body will be there but our mind back in Durban always in touch with mobile phones, keeping in touch with the family, as a result you will be disconnected from the Lord.

So Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, was there in Jagannath Puri for total 18 years of which six years He is travelling all over South India. One time He goes to South India and then another time He goes to Bengal and Bangladesh and back to Jagannath Puri, so this second time, back to Jagannath Puri. Third time He goes to Vrndavan through Jharkhand forest, have you heard of Jharkhand forest pastimes? There is also one state now in India, newly formed state like Maharashtra is one and Bihar is another one and Gujarat is like that, there is another new state called Jharkhand. Caitanya Mahaprabhu travelled through Jharkhand forest danced and made the animals also dance in ecstasy, Mahaprabhu goes to Vrndavan, He does His Braja mandal praikrama and comes back. So like this three times He went on travels.

Hare krsna nama gaur karila prachar
Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu had appeared to establish the Yugdharma.
dharma samsthapanarthaya sambhavami yuge yuge (BG 4.8)

I appear, in every age, to establish the principles of Dharma, the prime principle of Dharma in this age of Kali, is chanting the holy name of the Lord, Lord travelled all over the establishing, chanting dharma, sankirtana dharma. So finally, He was back, also from Vrndavan, now He would be spending twelve more years in Jagannath Puri dhama, which has very similar mood like that of Vrndavan. Soon after as He took sannyasa as we mentioned, He wanted to go to Vrndavan, but He ended up in Jagannath Puri, which is abode of Lord Jagannath, who is Krsna Himself.

Jei gaura, sei Krsna, sei Jagannath.

Caitanya Mahaprabhu is Krsna, Jagannath Swami is also Krsna, so in Jagannath Puri, Caitanya Mahaprabhu experiences being in Vrndavan. In Jagannath Puri Caitanya Mahaprabhu would go for darsana of Jagannath everyday and two Lords would be taking darsana of each other. Caitanya Mahaprabhu was very anxious to see Jagannath. One time Mahaprabhu, He was inquiring, could someone take me, show me the Lord, could someone show me the Lord, He was just stopping the people. Could you show me the Lord? Could you bring me to the Lord? That person, he didn’t know what to do, how to respond and then to another, what about you. Please bring me to my Lord, that also didn’t work and then another one, another one. He was going to shop to shop, stopping people. So anxious, so curious to meet His Lord, to have darsana of His Lord. So finally He came across one smart Jagannath Puri vasi, resident of Jagannath Puri. Oh, you want to see the Lord, yes, yes, please come along, please come along and He took Mahaprabhu , where did he take Him, to the temple, please come along and brought inside Jagannath’s temple. Oh you want to see the Lord, “There you see” and as Mahaprabhu saw, it was no Jagannath there that time, He saw Murlidhar, Shyamsundar playing flute in the place of Jagannath Swami.

jayati jayati devo devaki nandano’sau
jayati jayati ko vrsni vamsa pradipah
(CC madhya lila 13.78)

Caitanya Mahaprabhu also, at the time of rathyatra, He would offer this prayer. Oh Lord, all glories unto you, all glories unto you, jayati jayati devo devaki nandano’sau you are Devaki Nandan, Son of Devaki, you are Krsna Vrsni vamsa you are Vrisni Vansi, Krsna you are in Jagannath Puri. Jagannath Swami is very special Krsna, what is the speciality, what is the special feature of Jagannath? Jagannath is that Krsna, who is feeling very, very intense separation from His devotees, specially Vrndavan vasis, specially gopis and Radha Rani, that is the mood, where are they, where are they? And Lord’s eyes are, that’s why they are bigger. So that is that Jagannath Swami Krsna, feeling separation from His devotees and here is Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He has a mood of devotee, He has a mood of Radha Rani and He is feeling separation from Krsna, the Lord. So this is the match.

Krsna, Jagannath Swami feeling separation from the devotees, He is looking of for where are my devotees, where are my devotees, how are my devotees and here is Caitanya Mahaprabhu where is my Lord, where is my Krsna, Where is my Krsna. So this is a perfect match, Jagannath Swami and Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

In Jagannath Puri temple, there is a Garuda stambha, Garuda is one pillar, Garuda is a carrier of Jagannath, Vishnu, he is like the vehicle. Like yours vehicle is parked in front, as soon you are out of your home, your vehicle is there ever ready. So Garuda also parks himself at the entrance, when ever Lord wants to go, he is ready to go. Caitanya Mahaprabhu would be allowed only to go up to that pillar and not forward, if He would go forward then, finished. There would be a stronger magnetic field, so better to keep Him at a safer distance. So devotees would not allow Him to step forward. He had to stand next to Garuda stambha and take darsana, see Jagannath Swami. So as Mahaprabhu would hold the Garuda stambha, by the touch of the fingers of Caitanya Mahaprabhu there are finger prints of Caitanya Mahaprabhu in that Garuda stambha. I was just there in the past and I had seen and this time also, I not only saw but placed my fingers in the same place and was trying to feel something, trying to go into the past and imagine Mahaprabhu standing there, Him holding that pillar.

suni jara guna gatha
pasu pakhi jhure, pasana vidare
suni jara guna gatha

Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s guna gatha, His qualities, His pastimes are, even the birds, they go in trance as they listen pasu pakhi jhure, pasana vidare, and the rock would melt by His touch or by hearing His pastimes. Such is THE power of Caitanya Mahaprabhu and His pastimes, His qualities.

gaurangra madhurya lila
jar karne pravesila
hrdoya nirmala bhelo tar

gaurangra madhurya lila, jar karne pravesila as the pastimes of Gauranga Mahaprabhu enter the ears and it is not sufficient to enter the ears, this pastimes would finally reach the heart because our soul is not in ears, what is the sitting place of the soul? Heart, so it has to go all the way to the heart, not again entering one ear and coming out from the other one. So we take this pastimes in and arrange the meeting, meeting of Lord’s pastimes with the soul, that is the goal. Soul has to be brought in contact with the pastimes of the Lord. Lord is non-different from his pastimes, lila and Lord is non different from His holy name, His holy form or His holy dhama, some of these are Lord’s personal features.

So Narottam Dass Thakur sings that as the pastimes of Gauranga Mahaprabhu are heard, hrdoya nirmala bhelo tar, that person’s heart will become nirmal, free form dirt, free form contamination, free from three modes of material nature. I think that is the purpose of what we are doing here, by hearing this pastimes of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu in Jagannath Puri, we would like to be purified, yes, is that the purpose?

The pastimes of Gauranga in Jagannath Puri are unlimited, it is the ocean, ocean of pastimes, we just need a drop because we are very tiny, tiny souls, the drop is like a ocean for us, if we get just few drops, we will be drowned in that drop of the past times of Gauranga Mahaprabhu.
Caitanya Mahaprabhu in Jagannath Puri, as He was returning from His travels, Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya he approached King Prataprudra, and he enquired where could Lord stay? Please make some arrangement. Prataprudra, he was a great devotee of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu , although king of Orissa, king of Puri but very humble, pure soul, pure devotee he was.

He was always very anxious to serve Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He said, that Kashi Mishra’s home would be a very appropriate place for Mahaprabhu to stay and that is where Caitanya Mahaprabhu, when He returned, Caitanya Mahaprabhu stayed at Kashi Mishra’s place. I don’t know, whether you have heard the name “Gambhira.” Gambhira also means very serious, gambhir, serious place, that place is very serious place, that place was chosen because it is not very far from Jagannath Puri temple and it is secluded and is very quiet, for this reason, Kashi Mishra’s home was chosen as residence of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. And the place where He stayed was very tiny, very tiny place, very, very small place. Sannyasi as He was renounced, He was happily residing in that small place although Kashi Mishra had a big, big palace quarters, but Mahaprabhu choose that small corner, small quarter, where next 12 years, He would be spending here.

Jagannath Puri is going to be His base. No travels and from there He would go everyday for darsana of Jagannath and after having darsana of Jagannath. Next place Caitanya Mahaprabhu would visit every day, this was a daily practice, visit “Siddha Bakul”, where Namacarya Haridas Thakur, that was his residence.

Nama-acarya Haridas Thakur was born in a Muslim family, as a result he was banned from darsana of Jagannath, don’t think this is just some new policy of modern times, even 500 years ago Haridas Thakur, because he was from a non Hindu family, he was not allowed .

I was also not allowed to have darsana of Jagannath one time. One time as I was, that was my first time, first time in Jagannath Puri must be 1977, as we were going with a group of ISKCON devotees and the panda stopped us. Panda you understand panda, pandit becomes panda and as we why, why not, he said you, you are Christian and this ISKCON people they have converted you. I don’t know where they, they got this very secret, so I tried to convince but didn’t work, panda’s were well built and I am small, they literally picked me up and put me outside. But while as we were battling with the Panda, there was one of my God brother from America born in Christian family but he was having some Indian kind of complexion, skin. So he took advantage panda’s were busy with me, so he was there in front of Jagannath Swami praying for me and he soon returned outside the gate. Maharaja, Tulasi for you, Tulasi for you from, lotus feet of Jagannath. So by his mercy I had at least Tulasi of Jagannath that day. So Haridas Thakur, at least I was fighting to go in there but Haridas Thakur didn’t fight.

He considered himself not qualified for darsana of Jagannath. He would just take darsana of “Chakra” at the top of the temple and that was good enough that is considered good enough, even offerings of food could be made offered to the Chakra, a lot of people do to this day. This is, you could offer food to the Chakra, so Haridas Thakur he would just take darsana of the chakra at the top of the temple dome, but then Mahaprabhu would come to meet Haridas Thakur. So he was not allowed to go in for the darsana of Jagannath but then Jagannath would be walking, He would walk, who is Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

jei gaur, sei Krsna, sei Jagannath

So Jagannath Swami is Gauranga Mahaprabhu, he would come to Haridas Thakur and give Him darsana, embrace him and this was every day. Haridas Thakur he would just chant, that’s all that he did. Haridas Thakur would simply chant and chant and chant and chant and chant. And if we are asked we say can’t chant, can’t, can’t , can’t chant. Chant, chant, chant, can’t can’t, can’t. Prabhupada also said this. So he would always chant, very little rest, very little food always chanting that is why Mahaprabhu gave him title to Haridas Thakur as Nama-acarya Haridas Thakur and nama-acarya. He has another name, he is also Brahma, Haridas what is the name, Brahma Haridas, because he is not different from Brahma. Brahma appeared, but Brahma took little break from his management, managerial affairs , too much stress, so he decided to do little mantra meditation and he is acarya. Srila Prabhupada comes in that parampara, first acarya of our parampara, is Brahma. So he is acarya, so he is setting example, teaching in this age of Kali, chanting is the way, so he didn’t, well delivered so many discourses on this topic but he simply chanted and has set the glorious example. So at this place where Haridas Thakur, there was not so much shelter, lot of times he would be chanting in the hot sun, so one day Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu as He comes to see Haridas Thakur, He brought a tooth brush, it was a “Bakul Tree, the tree like the neem, little twig is used for brushing. So every day as Jagannath Swami is woken up they offer Him this brush. So that day’s brush, the twig Mahaprabhu carried with Him and planted that. And soon that grew into a tree, the shady tree and became known as “siddha bakul”. So the tree that was planted 500 years ago, that tree is still there, giving nice shade, then Haridas Thakur, then he was sitting in the shade of that bakul tree and chanting.

Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare
Hare Ram Hare Ram Ram Ram Hare Hare

So “Siddha Bakul” is another very famous spot in Jagannath Puri. In Jagannath Puri, you feel strong presence of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, where ever you go, the whole atmosphere of Jagannath Puri is surcharged with Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s memories and pastimes and so many places. he Haridas thakur’s samadhi is there, there is Gundicha temple, Gundicha you heard of Gundicha? The day of rathayatra, before a day of rathayatra , Caitanya Mahaprabhu would go there personally and clean the temple. He did not order call up some coolies on phone, 10 rupees okay, or bring some more sweepers with you, no He didn’t, He would personally go, take His devotees, take brooms and take many pots, it’s a wonderful pastime.

Tomorrow we will talk about Gundicha marjana and that is also, a series of festivals which took place 500 years age and for thousands of years. In fact this festivity is just one after the other, one leading to other and to other and other leading to the Jagannath ratha yatra. Jagannath Swami staying in Gundicha temple then “ulta ratha” and Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s visit to “Alarnath” while no darsana available for two week, Jagannath Puri temple is closed. You should know this, from snana yatra time to ratha yatra time about two weeks, if you want to take darsana, you have to go another temple that is where you take darsana of Jagannath or taking darsana of that deities is as good as taking darsana of Jagannath, Caitanya Mahaprabhu would do this.

So I think, so we talk about different festivities in Jagannath Puri and how Caitanya Mahaprabhu was part, how he participated, how He relished making those festivals memorable unforgetful experiences. Because ratha yatra that we are celebrating here, it is because of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He made this ratha yatra’s. He was there for 12 years attending ratha yatra after ratha yatra, after ratha yatra and not just witnessing or taking photographs or standing on the roof tops and making some observations.

But He was integral part of this rathayatra festival, Jagannath up there, He is Krsna and Caitanya Mahaprabhu in the mood of Radha Rani in front of Him, on the streets of Puri in front of ratha Yatra. So we will discuss that series of festivals and events tomorrow and before we close, we could sing a little and then what happens. Maha Prasade Govinde, it is very popular manta, everyone is waiting for that movement , the two popular mantra’s Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudaye and then you sleep and mahaprasade, you really jump, jump, two popular mantras.
