Sharing mercy of Srila Prabhupada

Venue: ISKCON Nagpur
Dated: 16th August 2015

We should hear katha with shanti and silence and then hearing will give you all benefit, in between the ear and atma there is mana you should take care that mana does not create disturbance in hearing.

“ankulasya sankalpa pratikulasa varjanam”

Yo u are all welcome for Sunday feast, last time in Purosotam masa we heard the Mahima of Harinam. Yamraj said to his dutas bring those who don’t bend in front of Lord and those who don’t chant harinam. In vrindavan we did Bhagvat mahatmaya that was shown online on mayapur TV. Do you watch TV? yes this TV you can watch, iskcon TV you can see sitting at home.

Then I went to Jagannath puri for Navakalevaram utsava new deities were installed. It was a great experience. Special darshan of Lord Jagganath. Lord Jagannath walks in a special style His devotees carry Him. Lord puts His merciful glance on all His devotees.

“jagannathah svami nayana-patha-gami bhavatu me”

May that Jagannatha Swami be the object of my vision. Please come on the path of my vision. I experienced at a moment that Lord is just looking at me. Then at Pandarpur I reached for ashadi utsava. Do you go to Pandarpur? Haribol Pandurang is also Krishna.

“panduranga panduranga vithala vithal”

Lord standing on brick, 20 lakh people had come for darshan of Vitthal. Some came walking in that we had two Hare Krsna dindis. They walk for 18 days then 18 hours they stand in queue for half second darshan of Lord Vitthal that’s enough for the devotees darshan of Lords lotus feet. There are very less temples in India where they allow touching the lotus feet of Lord and Lord Panduranga is one of them.

“sadhavo hrdayam mahyam sadhunam hrdayam tv aham” (S.B 9.4.68)

The pure devotee is always within the core of My heart, and I am always in the heart of the pure devotee. My devotees do not know anything else but Me, and I do not know anyone else but them. Once in Pandarpur devotees could hug Lord Vitthal they call methi in Marathi, the two hearts very close. Lords heart and devotees heart that was 100 years back now they stopped that system.

Then I went to China from Pandarpur, “sarvatra pracara haibe mora nama” “In every town and village, the chanting of My name will be heard.” (Caitanya-bhagavata, Antya 4.126)

This preaching has reached to China also; I was not the only one to go. Srila prabhupada send HH Tamal Krsna Goswami to china for preaching. There are 2000 serious Hare Krishna devotees. Bhagvat gita is translated in Chinese language and distributed all over. Our team distributed 1200 Bhagvat gita to Chinese. The people there were kirtan preme, once in kirtan they were sitting and clapping then they all stood and then they started dancing. I was surprised and very happy to see them dancing. We distributed mantra cards to them. They can’t pronounce hare they say hale hale and then slowly they said hare hare…they all paid fees to attend kirtan program it was not free.
Hindi chini bhai bhai, I told them this in one program; in 1962-63 childhood I heard this Hindi chini bhai bhai. I was confused what is this- Hindi is language and chini is sugar how’s that possible a language and sugar are brothers. Then as I grew older I understood what it meant when I came in contact with Srila Prabhupada. So how we become bhai bahi? When we have common father the Lord then we become bhai bhai. Same Lord is sitting in every bodies heart “aham bija-pradah pita”. We are all brothers Hindi Pakistani bahi bhai . People all over the world are brother’s bhai bhai.

In China some people following Christianity had also come for the program their rosary beads also had 108 beads. Many people are ignorant also they don’t know who the Lord is. Lot of preaching of Buddha dharma is there in China. Then I returned back to Delhi then Kolkata for the celebration of Srila Prabhupada’s journey to west on 13 August 1965; 50 years completed. Prabhupad was born in Kolkata and in Kolkata he got instruction from his guru to preach in English in the west in 1922. Then full life Prabhupad was preparing to go to the west. Prabhupada lilamrita describes his entire mission. In 1922 he got instruction and in 1933 he got initiated your name is Abhay Caran, ac not ac of railway its Abhay Caran Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada. Then in 1944 he printed back to god head magazine, in 1955 he took vanprasta -you want tea or me he asked his wife and humorously she said of course I want tea. She was not aware that Prabhupada was serious. Then he went to Jhasi.

Then in 1966 ISKCON was established in New York. Jhasi devotee said ISKCON was conceived in Jhasi and delivered in New York. Prabhupada said ISKCON is my body. But how he went to New York via Nagpur. Prabhupad wrote dairy the name of that diary is Jaladutta dairy. Then in 1977 Lord gave Prabhupada 11 years for establishing dharma. “dharma-sthapana-hetu sadhur avatar” (Sri Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya-lila Chapter 17 Verse 185) he established dharma in the whole world.

So in Kolkata we celebrated golden jubilee at Netaji stadium its capacity was 12,000. And it was full pack for 12 hours. Delegates from 107 countries had come. Srila prabhupada ki jai.
That was the most auspicious moment when Prabhupad went to west that was the starting of his preaching mission. We all devotees went for darshan of birth place of Prabhupada. When Prabhupada was small he used to go for darshan of Radha Govindev and used to keep looking at the Lord.

His father was a great devotee. In such family Prabhupada was born. Many sadhus used to come to his house. And his father Guar Mohan Dey used to ask the sadhus please bless my son that he becomes a devotee of Radha rani. Prabhupada used to organize small ratha yatra when he was small. And used to tell his sister after ratha yatra we will distribute prasad so keep prasad ready. This was all preparation lifetime preparation. Senapati bhakta -Srila Prabhupada. So many of us collected here but Iskcon started with one person that’s Srila Prabhupada. Caitanya Mahaprabhu preached in India during his yatra but for the foreign land preaching he appointed Srila Prabhupada he left it all to Prabhupada to ISKCON.

Srila prabhupada made famous Lords name all over the world in a very short time. Because of his efforts we are all blessed by golokera prema dhana he made us rich.

Vivekanada swami also preached in west and one lady was inspired and came to India and Prabhupada brought many and many devotees.

The glories of Acharyas should spread in all brahmanda. Prabhupada ki jai

Lord’s activities are always Superhuman – ‘atimartyani’

Venue: Pune
Dated: 21/02/2011
So this is Canto 1, chapter 1, text number 20th.

“krtavan kila karmani saha ramena kesavah
atimartyani bhagavan gudhah kapata-manusah” (SB 1.1.20)

Translation and purport by Srila Prabhupada ki jaya!!
Translation:
Lord Sri Krsna, the Personality of Godhead, along with Balarama, played like a human being and so masked He performed many superhuman acts. Sri Krsna Balaram ki….…jai

Purport:
The doctrines of anthropomorphism and zoomorphism are never applicable to Sri Krsna or the Personality of Godhead. The theory that a man becomes God by dint of penance and austerities is very much rampant nowadays, especially in India. Since Lord Rama, Lord Krsna and Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu were detected by the sages and saints to be the Personality of Godhead as indicated in revealed scriptures, many unscrupulous men have created their own incarnations. This process of concocting an incarnation of God has become an ordinary business, especially in Bengal. Any popular personality with a few traits of mystic powers will display some feat of jugglery and easily become an incarnation of godhead by popular vote. Lord Sri Krsna was not that type of incarnation. He was actually the Personality of Godhead from the very beginning of His appearance. He appeared before His so-called mother as four-armed Visnu. Then, at the request of the mother, He became like a human child and at once left her for another devotee at Gokula, where He was accepted as the son of Nanda Maharaja and Yashoda Mata. Similarly, Sri Baladeva, the counterpart of Lord Sri Krsna, was also considered a human child born of another wife of Sri Vasudev.

In Bhagavad-Gita, the Lord says that His birth and deeds are transcendental and that anyone who is so fortunate as to know the transcendental nature of His birth and deeds will at once become liberated and eligible to return to the kingdom of God. So knowledge of the transcendental nature of the birth and deeds of Lord Sri Krsna is sufficient for liberation. In the Bhagavatam, the transcendental nature of the Lord is described in nine cantos, and in the Tenth Canto His specific pastimes are taken up. All this becomes known as one’s reading of this literature progresses. It is important to note here, however, that the Lord exhibited His divinity even from the lap of His mother, that His deeds are all superhuman (He lifted Govardhana Hill at the age of seven), and that all these acts definitely prove Him to be actually the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Yet, due to His mystic covering, He was always accepted as an ordinary human child by His so-called father and mother and other relatives. Whenever some herculean task was performed by Him, the father and mother took it otherwise. And they remained satisfied with unflinching filial love for their son. As such, the sages of Naimisaranya described Him as apparently resembling a human being, but actually He is the supreme almighty Personality of Godhead.

“krtavan kila karmani saha ramena kesavah
atimartyani bhagavan gudhah kapata-manusah”
(SB 1.1.20)

Lord Sri Krsna, the Personality of Godhead, along with Balarama, played like a human being, and so masked He performed many superhuman acts.
Jaya Sri Krsna Balaram ki jaya!!

Radheyshyam prabhu said that we have just now returned from Vrndavana or Vraja Mandal. So this would be an appropriate topic. So this is his wish that becomes our command. Vrndavana is a playground of God. Bhakti Caitanya Maharaj published a book; ‘Vrndavana-the playground of God’. Like a song of God, Vrndavana is the playground of God. But because we know the name of God, so we do not just call Him God. We call Him Sri Krsna and we know more about God. What more is mentioned here in this verse by the sages of Naimisaranya,’ saha ramena, saha ramena kesavah’, it appears that they knew, they knew also. It was not just Lord Sri Krsna who performed ‘krtavan kila karmani’ activities of the Lord. What are those activities? ‘krtavan’ He performed, ‘kila’ what are those ‘karmani’ activities. Not alone but ‘saha ramena kesavah’ that Keshav performed ‘karmani’ activities along with Balaram and ‘atimartyani bhagavan’. Both Krsna and Balaram are ‘atimartyani.’ They are superhuman; they are not ‘martya’, among those who die. Lord has nothing to do with death. So They are beyond mrtyu, ‘atimartyani’, ‘jatasya hi dhruvo mrtyur dhruvam janma mrtasya ca’ (BG 2.27). This is the law not applicable to these Personalities of Godhead, ‘atimartyani’ and They are also Bhagavan. That Keshav, He has a brother. Well, relationship has not been mentioned, but we know from other sources Balaram is the brother. He is and Krsna is Bhagavan ‘atimartyani bhagavan’.
The Personality of Godhead, ‘gudhah’ but they cover themselves up hidingly. The translation of ‘gudhah’ here is masked. They put some other mask above them, around them. ‘kapata-manusah’ and present themselves to be some kind of ‘manusah’. They act like, they try to act like ordinary human beings but they are not. They are Bhagavan, why would sages be interested in, why would sages be interested in activities of some ordinary human beings? Their keen interest is in Keshav, Sri Krsna, His activities along with activities of Balaram. The brother Balaram, the bigger brother Balaram. Jaya Krsna Balaram!!

Krsna become, He became the eighth son of Devaki and Balaram is seventh son of Devaki. Even with Their birth, Balaram was in the womb of Devaki and He is transferred from Devaki’s womb to Rohini’s womb. They talk of heart transplantation but they have not talk about womb transplantation. Not necessary transplantation of womb but transferring child from one womb to another womb. So right there is ‘atimartyani’ this is the superhuman activity. They are in one womb and they take birth in another womb. Both are wives of Vasudev, Devaki as well as Rohini and they are wondering, what happen, how come? Rohini’s husband is in the prison and she gets pregnant and she delivers child. There was a big surprise and there was lot of rumors spreading around. Then Srila Vyasdeva and Narada Muni had to appear. They were very much curious to take darshan of Balaram. When they saw Balaram, immediately they bowed down to Balaram and they began offering prayers to Balaram. Later on it was revealed by them that, in fact, this is, He was in the womb of Devaki. And then God transferred for sake of protection, for safety reasons. And there they declared in Mathura, the word spread around as it was a miscarriage, a miscarriage. What happen? What happen to the seventh child? She was pregnant, now we don’t find the child, where is the child? So right there is the human activity, I mean superhuman, ‘atimartyani’ superhuman activity of Balaram. All these arrangements also were made by Lord Sri Krsna in His own abode. Lord had dispatched Yogamaya, ‘you go to Vraja and your task is this, this, this, that, you have to transfer’. And as He gets transferred, He would become known as Sankarsana.

Lord Sri Krsna had already named Balaram as Sankarsana. Yogamaya comes and she has a job description as per job description, she is performing all her activities. Later on, Krsna appears as son of Devaki. Yogamaya was asked to also take birth at the same time at midnight, take birth as the daughter of Yashoda. She is described as Krsna anuja, means another child had taken birth as son of Yashoda and then Yogamaya is taking birth. In fact, two Krishna’s are appearing at the same time, this is also another superhuman. Krsna is appearing as Devika’s son, Devakinandan and He is also appearing as Nandanandan. And Vasudev in prison house of Kamsa, Lord appeared as four-handed form as we read it here in the purport.

Later on, on the request of Devaki, ‘It’s very difficult to hide your Godhood Supreme Personality of Godhead, Godhood. If you have four hands, so could you hide the two hands please?’ Immediately Lord dropped His two hands and He becomes two-handed, ‘dvibhuja’ that is superhuman. Vasudev is very much tied with the shackles and chains. He is hardly able to move and then this little baby Krsna says, ‘could you bring Me to Gokula?’ And Vasudev probably said, ‘what? I cannot even get up, I cannot even move and You want me to bring You to Gokula?’ This must be first thought, ‘but okay if You wish I will do so.’ With that desire as Krsna, the baby Krsna, Bala Krsna was lifted by Vasudev. Immediately the shackles were broken into pieces. Haribol!! That’s another superhuman. The baby Krsna doesn’t have the cutters, the saw or welding, nothing. He is just baby, helpless child and all the shackles are broken into pieces. And this is what happens also as one accepts Krsna. Well or realizes Krsna as He is, Krsna as Supreme Personality of Godhead.

‘janma karma ca me divyam’ (BG 4.9), these sages are taking keen interest in knowing ‘krtavan kila karmani’. And Lord Sri Krsna says in Bhagavad-Gita, this is also season of Bhagavad-Gita jayanti mahotsava ki jaya!! So that Sri Krsna says, ‘janma karma ca me divyam’, My karma, My janma is divya, ‘atimartyani’ and ‘evam yo vetti tattvatah’. Anyone who knows My birth, My activities ‘karmani tattvatah’, what is outcome? ‘tyaktva deham punar janma, naiti mam eti so arjuna’ (BG 4.9). These sages are very much interested in knowing the Lord as He is. They know the science of God. They want to be realized, God realized, self realized. Well, they want to be Krsna realized, Balaram realized. One who realizes Krsna, Balaram and Their activities, Their appearances, ‘tyaktva deham punar janma, naiti’ no more births, no more death, what happens? ‘mam eti, mam eti’ they go. ‘tyaktva deham punar janma na eti, mam eti’ two ‘etis’ are there. ‘punar janma na eti’ they do not attain punar janma, ‘mam eti’, they attain Me. They come where I reside, where does the Lord reside? Goloka Dham, He resides in Goloka. He resides, well in another form resides in Vaikuntha. So they go, who knows whether they go or they don’t go. What is the proof? What is the proof that they go back to Vaikuntha or back to Goloka.

Life of Tukaram is the proof,
Haribol!! Which you will see tonight, baap dakhava nahitar sraddha kar (Laughter). We say this in marathi. Show your father otherwise perform sraddha. So many people say, ‘could you show me God? And if you cannot show me, then He doesn’t exist!!’ So like that who has seen people going to God, going to Vaikuntha, show me. So Lord also shows sometimes. Lot of times it happens, aprataksyaha, aparoksyaha, para aksyah, beyond our aksha, beyond our eyes. But in case of Tukaram, there are other examples also, of Ajamila and Dhruva Maharaj and some other examples are there. Right in front of thousands of witnesses, they went back to Godhead as Tukaram did some 400 years ago.

When this ‘Loha gaon’ International Airport, is that the name? That did not even exist and there was no Air India or Air Canada or Air China. Air Vaikuntha (Laughter) appeared right next door from here. And they saw Tukaram boarding the plane and they saw Tukaram went as the whole witnesses, they heard what Tukaram had to say “ ami jato, ami jato amuca gava” Is that the name of the production? jau deva achiya gava, jau devachiya gava. Ami jato amuca gava, jao deva achiya gava, there he says jao deva achiya gava. Let’s all go…. I am going, let’s all go to gaon to the kingdom of Lord, so he went.

So as Vasudev lifted Vasudeva, Sri Krsna, he became freed from all the shackles, all the bonds. So as we accept Krsna within our hearts, He is there within our hearts. Well, we just don’t know Him, we don’t know Him that He is within our heart. So to become Krsna conscious meaning to realize that He may be everywhere, it doesn’t matter. What really matters is for me that He is within me. He is with me, that is more important for me than to know that He is everywhere. Gopis were not interested knowing that Krsna is everywhere. They wanted their Krsna to be with them. When Uddhava was trying to pacify, ‘Krsna is everywhere, Krsna is everywhere’, kan kan mein bhagavan. Gopis were not happy. ‘Oh, we did not know kan kan mein bhagavan, (Laughter), oh, now we know.’ They wanted their Krsna next to them. They wanted to be with the Lord. So when we realized that the Lord is in my heart, Lord is with me and that’s the end of everything. That’s the end of material existence and one goes back to Godhead, back to Krsna.

So then Vasudev took Vasudeva and he, well he doesn’t know what next. He does know that there are so many doors of the prison or gates and they are all closed with big locks. And there are lots of chaukidars with big guns and sticks. How is he going to manage? Does not matter, ‘my son wants me to bring Him to Gokula and that is what I know and I will do it.’ So he has picked up Krsna and he is proceeding. As he comes to the first door, first of all he is noticing that all the extraordinary, the security arrangements; because Kamsa knew that ‘one of these days, one of these days, the eighth child is going to be appearing. He is my killer and before He kills me, I want to kill Him!’. So this is his strategy so he had an extra chaukidars. But what did Vasudev noticed was, they were all fast asleep, uhrrr…..( gurumaharaj making the sound of snoring), all sleeping, okay that’s out of the way. All the security force are out of the way. What about the doors and the locks? As he comes to the door, all the locks are, they are dropped down and door opens automatically.

I had experience of this automatic business. First time I ever went to airport, anyway I don’t tell you all details. In 77 I had to, I was on a special assignment of bringing doctor. Srila Prabhupada’s friend doctor, he used to stay in Allahabad. So Srila Prabhupada sent me to fetch his friend doctor. So thus, that was in November maybe October of ‘77. So I went to Delhi airport with little bag and little card. As I came to the door, so I was approaching the door. I thought I have to open the door, so I parked my trolley and as I moved forward, door opened automatically (Laughter). I was scared, ‘hey! Some ghost here or…'(Laughter). I didn’t even touch the door, it opened automatically. So we are very proud of this automatic business. But we have to admit that we are only imitating 5000 years old system that existed. Automatic, the doors opened, door after door after door and through so many doors. Same thing, doors are opening automatically and there comes Vasudev out of the prison carrying his son Vasudeva.
And there, ‘saha ramena’ who was waiting for Krsna. Who was waiting for Keshava was Balaram. Balaram was waiting for Sri Krsna. In another form, Sankarsana form, Sheshnaga, Ananta Sheshnaga form to serve, to protect His younger brother. So that was the first meeting between these two brothers ‘saha ramena’. And from now on, for next 125 years, They are going to be always together. Most of the time, They are together and whenever They are not together, there are also instances when Balaram is not with Sri Krsna, Krsna gets into trouble. Some sort of troubles He gets into, when that ha “baandha ukhaddhala yala baandha ukhaddhala” (Marathi) ukhala bandhan lila took place, Yashoda tying Krsna to the mortar, Balaram was out of station (Laughter). As He returned, He saw His brother tied to the mortar, He cannot even move and Balaram became very furious. ‘Who has done this? Who is it, who is it?’
Kalia- Krsna, when Krsna was caught in the coils of Kalia and the news spread all over Nandagram. ‘Oh, but Balaram is here’, and they are noticing, ‘Oh! For sure because Balaram is not there, Krsna must be in some big trouble’. They were seeing some bad omens, so many symptoms, some trouble is awaiting us. What does this mean? What does this mean? And Balaram is not with Krsna for sure. He must be in some trouble and then they come looking for, where is Krsna, where is Krsna and they found Krsna caught up in the coils, tight coils of Kalia. The day Krsna’s friends and Krsna friends’ calves, calves- plural of calf were stolen. That day also Balaram was not there, again trouble. There was a trouble for He lost all His friends. Brahma stole all the friends of Krsna. Brahma stole all the calves of Krsna and His friends’ calves also. Much later, 360 days had passed, only 5, 6 days to go for completion of one year period. Then Balaram realized, He could not even realize, there was some ‘atimartyani’ some extraordinary activities were going on. Even Balaram could not understand what was going on there. Krsna had to, ‘hey come here come here, that day you were not there and this happened. You know Brahma….’ ‘And all this friends, who are these friends?’ This is Me. (Laughter) What could I have done? Was not possible for Me to return by Myself. There could have been so many inquiries. ‘Where is my, where is your this friend and where is my son and where is….and I also had to become the calves and…

The show went on for almost one year ‘atimartyani’. Every child, every child, son of Vraja was Sri Krsna. Every calf in every goshala, calves were Sri Krsna. The Lord is acting like an ordinary son or ordinary child.
Well, this is extraordinary that every boy, young boy in Vraja is Sri Krsna. Because all the mothers, elderly gopis want Krsna as their son. They want Krsna like son but there is no one else like Krsna and knowing their desires, Krsna becomes their son. The cows also are not interested that their milk, the milking happens and then into the pot and the boiling the milk and this spoon feeding. He is fed with that milk, He drinks the milk. Those cows were wondering, ‘could He not drink our milk the way our calves drink? Why can’t He come to goshala and drink directly from our udders? Will this ever happen?’ This was the desire of the cows and that was the desire of the mothers. Knowing this, what kind of pastime is being performed here. Indra is made instrument, ‘nimitra matram’, he has this idea of stealing. And he has reason for that stealing of friends and the calves. Then Krsna will be able to display this very ‘atimartyani’, very extraordinary pastime that every boy, every calf in Vraja is Sri Krsna.
Then what happens, you know what happens? You don’t know? Every day they are realizing more and more that this son of theirs, they were thinking this is our son. And this is son of that neighboring gopi and that son is another gopi’s son and that is Yashoda’s son. Gradually gradually gradually, this thought of ‘this is my son and this is someone else’s son and this is Yashoda’s son’, this thought started disappearing. With the every passing of the day and night, they were realizing more and more and more and more and the day was there. They saw my son, this lady’s son, that lady’s son. Yashoda’s son, they are one and the same! And they were one and the same! This is ‘atimartyani’. Each one of that boy was sacitananda vigraha. Although they were looking like boys, same boys, same complexions, same likes and dislikes, same heights, same 50kgs, not that too much may be for the boys (Laughter). But these days boys are 50 kgs or…. so all those differences were taken into account. And Krsna not only becomes looking like them but the mind and intelligence and their whole attitude and all their behavioral changes or differences, Krsna managed exhibiting all that for entire one year. Balaram ‘saha ramena kesavah’, then Lord Krsna Keshava disclosed this to Rama. ‘This is the matter brother, now you understand?’ ‘Yes yes, now I understand…’
So that Balaram was there to greet Sri Krsna and He was the first one to greet just outside the prison of Kamsa. Then he is going through Mathura town. What time was the night Vasudev going through the town? After midnight after sometime, prayers took some fifteen minutes (Laughter). The door after door, another twenty minutes and so they may be around 1 o’clock. 1 A.M He is going through Mathura town. Well this is Krsna Janmasthami talk, the moon that night asthami’s moon is supposed to be half moon. You could imagine right? That night, asthami night, Krsna paksha, asthami, moon rising is at midnight and moon rises half moon. But that night, the moon was delighted. ‘Oh! Lord has taken birth in my dynasty! He is becoming Chandravamsi Sri Krsna ki jaya!! Chandravamsi. He is Chandra, My Lord is Chandravamsi.’ He became so happy. He became so delighted, his face lit up

So that night at midnight, this never happened before, will never happen again. The full moon, moon rising was full moon. This is also not ordinary happening and then…. So some moon shine is there not much. So hidingly, Vasudev is hidingly going through Mathura town. He is very much scared of someone, someone reporting to Kamsa. Someone giving news of him carrying the baby Krsna across or to Yamuna and then towards to Gokula. So another arrangement we hear that all the dogs are fast asleep. So how does that help? Imagine if the dogs were not sleeping, what would they do? Their business is to bark and if they would bark, for sure so many and sometimes pack of dogs, so many gather together and they bark. They could have woken up people and someone noticing through the door. Hey look! Who is it? Who is it? Vasudev and immediately they would do mobileing (Laughter). Mobile, mobile Kamsa and Kamsa would run after…. So in order to avoid that, all the dogs made to sleep.

I mean, just see Lord is in the hands of Vasudev. He is acting ‘gudhah kapata-manusah.’ He is putting that show. He is wearing that mask and acting like ‘manusah’, some ordinary child, ordinary being, human being. So He is there in the hands. He is not able to even walk by Himself but He is able to put all the dogs to sleep and He gives impression, ‘I have nothing…no it’s not Me. It’s the dogs are sleeping. It is their choice’ (Laughter). As if He is neutral, as if He has nothing to do with it. But this is how the Lord acts.

‘yoga-maya samavritah, naham prakasah sarvasya, yoga-maya samavritah’ (BG 7.25)

I cover Myself with yoga maya or He acts through His so many energies and then declares, ‘mayadhyaksena prakrtih, suyate sa-caracaram’ (B.G 9.10). “I am ‘adhyaksh’, I am superintendent. Not even blade of grass moves without My sanction.” If there is anyone who could make such claim? That is Lord, thats Lord. But He is just in the hands of Vasudev and He makes a show that He has nothing to do whatever is happening around. So then he comes to…Vasudev comes to the banks of Yamuna. And it’s a rainy season in the month of Shravan Bhadrapada. This is varsha ritu, so rains and floods and the river is flooded. Yamuna is flooded and Vasudev is on the bank of that kind of Yamuna. ‘Now what happen, I am not a mystic yogi to walk on the water. I wish I was but I don’t have such feat.’ But he carries on; his mind is fixed on the mission. What is his mission? The child said. What did the child say? ‘Bring Me to Gokula.’ That all he knows that, ‘ I have to bring my child to Gokula for the safety reasons.’ So he is doing that.
So as he is on the banks of Yamuna and Yamuna has immediately taken note. Oh ! Yamuna knows that Vasudev is carrying the child and that child is not ordinary child. That child could not hide Himself from the vision of Yamuna like personality. Yamuna is not just Yamuna jal, just Yamuna water. Yamuna is a person. Yamuna is a personality and so is Sarasvati and so is Ganga and other rivers also. Just last night we were talking about bhagavat katha. Bhagavat katha was taking place once on the banks of Ganga. And four Kumaras were reciting Bhagavatam and in the assembly all the rivers were sitting. All the rivers had taken seat, not that there was a pond. Where is, which is this pond? (Laughter). No, she was Yamuna, she had an asana. She was sitting on an asana and Sarasvati was sitting on another asana and another river. Not only the rivers, all the dhamas, all the tirthas, they are also persons. They had taken their seats.

All the seventeen Puranas had come and taken their seats. 17 Puranas were hearing Bhagavat purana, this is beyond us, this is acintya. This is something that we do not see. Lots of things we do not see, limitations. So Yamuna has taken note, He is not ordinary child. He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead and she immediately remembered that Supreme Personality of Godhead. Once He was at Rameshwaram on the banks of Indian Ocean. And He wanted to cross Indian Ocean to reach Lanka. That ocean was taking a little extra time, was not cooperative. Not prompt in coming forward and giving all his extends all the cooperation. Then Sri Rama, He got up with His bow and arrow. He was furious and with that there was the whole ocean was shaking up like a tsunami and all the creatures in that ocean were struggling, suffocating. ‘ Sri Rama has now come as Sri Krsna and His goal is also to cross, go across as Rama wanted to go across Indian ocean. This Krsna wants to go across my water Yamuna. And if I delay, He could do something very similar (Laughter) what He did to Indian ocean. I better help Him out! not protest or ignore or delay.’ So that was one thought, Yamuna was thinking like this. Yamuna knew this Rama’s pastime, she remembered that. She also remembered that, ‘when He grows up, ends up in Dwarka and as He would be looking for right match, marriageable age, I am supposed to be one of His wives. So if I do not cooperate, help Him out, when there will be time of the match, He would be remembering me. And that would not be in my favor, so this was another reason. Some acharyas are giving these commentaries. So thinking thus, Yamuna extended all the helping hand, all the cooperation.
So Vasudev was carrying Vaasudeva and entered water of Yamuna. Water was knee deep and waist deep and chest deep and He was trying to make sure that Krsna does not drown. At some point he noticed, the water was rising, Yamuna water was rising. And Yamuna’s goal was just to touch, just to touch the lotus feet of baby Krsna and then she would cleared the path. So this is what happened. Yamuna touched the lotus feet of Sri Krsna ki jaya!! Then she became ecstatic, happy. Then Vasudev was able to cross Yamuna. Well, this is ‘atimartyani’ also. Going across Yamuna, the way he managed doing and now he was on eastern bank of Yamuna on the way to Gokula. What time is it now? How much time crossing Mathura? Half an hour crossing Yamuna, another 15 minutes. It was like a two o’clock in the morning around that. Vasudev is now going towards Gokula, Gokula is some distance.

Here Vasudev’s Vaasudeva consciousness, Vasudev’s Krsna consciousness is visible, noticeable, his emotions, his feelings. So as he is carrying baby Krsna, sometimes he is going faster. Sometimes he is going faster thinking, ‘I better rush and bring the child to Gokula and leave Him there before Kamsa. If he somehow, he finds out, he may rush. He may try to catch up with me.’ So to avoid that, Vasudev is rushing, going faster. But the next moment he thinks, ‘but if I go with this speed, I’ll be in Gokula very soon. Then what will happen? I’ll have to leave the child there. I will be bereft of the child’s association and the transcendental touch that I have with the child. So I better take some extra time so that He will be longer with me.’ With this thought, then Vasudev would slow down. Sometimes he is in slow slow….. motion picture, that is slow motion. ‘But if I go slow like this, Kamsa may come and he begins running. But if I run like this, I’ll be in Gokula very soon. I will lose the child’s association.’ Then slowing down, going faster, slow fast, slow fast. He is going through different gears between eastern bank of Yamuna and Gokula.

Then finally, he has reached Gokula, big palace of Nanda Maharaj. And he has finally entered that chamber, that quarter where Yashoda had given birth to baby daughter. That was, Yogamaya was ordered to do so. So Yogamaya has taken birth as daughter of Yashoda. But there is a confidentially something that also had happened. Yashoda had also given birth to son. She gave birth to two children, one son followed by a daughter. So Vasudev took the daughter away leaving his son there and then what happen? The two Krsnas here, don’t tell anybody okay (Laughter). This is very confidential, it’s not common knowledge. Probably we have heard it before. There was a time also I have not heard. This is the fact of having two Krsnas. Then Krsna from Mathura- Vasudeva Krsna enters Vrndavana Krsna, Nandananda Krsna and two Krsnas become? Two Krsnas become one Krsna. Isn’t that ‘atimartyani’ also, isn’t that also very superhuman?

Could Radheyshyam merge with another boy and then….(Laughter). Krsna was one when Brahma stole all the friends. Immediately or very soon, as many friends were there, He expanded. For one year He was like that. When Brahma returned His original friends and they were sitting in the same place for lunch. In the same spot, each boy had a spot. The spot they had year ago, when they returned they were sitting in the same place. Krishna is returning after one year and meeting His friends. And His friends, ‘oh! You are so fast. We have not finished even our lunch.’ Although one year had passed, one year they were not there. In the middle of their lunch, on the bank of Yamuna Krsna said, ‘No, I’ll go and find the calves. You enjoy your lunch.

So He has returned after one year. So that time, they were as many friends, those many Krsnas were there and He had again wound up. From one He had become many and from many He had become again one Krsna. Krsna returned and when He returned, the dadhi bhatt. Because He had left in the middle of His lunch, He had not even washed His hands. After one year as He returns, His hand is wet. All the kheer and all the pickles he was holding between the fingers, they are still there as they were before one year ago. Then their lunch is over, some more pastimes and then they are returning to their respective homes.

Each home there is this talk of killing of Aghasura. Every home, the pastime of Krsna is being narrated. Every boy, he had seen all day, what he had seen, he shared. ‘Hey daddy, come here come here. Mummy! stop, come.’ And he is making the daddy and mummy sitting. Children are giving narration, Bhagavat katha (Laughter).’ Listen to this!’ So this is how the Krishna’s pastimes, their song they recited, remembered. This is how they spread all over Vraja. When of course, Pariksit heard this, ‘how come something that happen when Krsna was aged five, that became known when He became pauganda. He became six years old. How come this?’ So the pastimes that took place before lunch, year ago was narrated, shared by the friends year later.

So Balaram, we did not say much about Balaram. Balaram is always with Sri Krsna and Their activities. Whether stealing butter or Balaram is also part of that pastime. Calves herding pastimes, cows herding pastimes, Krsna and Balaram together. So after Gokula, They go to Vrndavana. When They are both ten eleven years old, They both together go to Mathura. They both together are wrestling with those giant wrestlers. Chanur was killed by Krsna and Mustik was killed by Balaram. There are five of them, two were killed by Balaram. Three were killed by Sri Krsna. Kamsa was killed by Krsna and Kamsa had eight brothers, Kanka and others. As they came forward, Balaram ..dishoom…. and He gave a boxing and….So They were sharing. ‘vinasaya ca duskrtam'(BG 4.8). Two brothers, so together They were sharing the task. And then They both had met Vasudev and Devaki. Then They both had gone to Sandipani muni’s ashram. They are both disciples of Sandipani muni. And They both had gone to find the son of Sandipani muni, Prabhasksetra. Then They both had to go to Samyamani, the abode of Yamaraj. They both returned to Avantipur where They were doing studies. They both returned there to Mathura.

By that time Jarasandha had come and They were both battling with Jarasandha together seventeen times. Eighteenth time, They both fled. They left Mathura and went to Dwarka. Then it was only Krsna, He came to Kaundinyapur alone. Next morning when Balaram woke up and realized, ‘oh! where is Krsna?’ And then, ‘ oh, He must have gone there to Kaundinyapur, Rukmini’s birthplace.’ Then Balaram rushed and caught up with Sri Krsna. So They were together in Kaundinyapur battling with Rukmi and others. And They both had returned to Dwarka and They are together of course. Balaram was married. His elder brother, His marriage has taken place first. And then Sri Krsna was married and They both are staying together.

Only Balaram goes to Vrndavana, Krsna stays behind, He was kept behind. Thinking if we send both of Them, then what is the guarantee of Them coming back. Let’s keep one of Them here. So they kept Krsna in Dwarka and let Balaram go. Then Balaram returned again. And like that in the battlefield of Kurukshetra, only Krsna was there. Balaram refused to take part in battle. He went on a tour of Bharat varsa for They were not together that time. Like that there are many pastimes They are together. The time of the marriage of Subhadra, there are differences of opinion between the brothers. They always do not agree, They agree to disagree with each other. So at time of marriage of Subhadra, one brother is in favor, one brother is not in favor of marriage and like that. Finally They are at Prabhasksetra and I think Balaram is the first one to wind up His pastimes. Some 125 years have passed and time to put a curtain on the pastimes, close the pastimes Nitya lila pastimes. So Balaram leaves and then soon Sri Krsna follows back to Goloka- ‘goloka eva nivasaty akhilatma bhutah’ (Bs 5.37). And then They continue their pastimes. So like that..

“krtavan kila karmani saha ramena kesavah
atimartyani bhagavan gudhah kapata-manusah
” (SB 1.1.20)

Lord Sri Krsna, the Personality of Godhead, along with Balarama, played like a human being, and so masked He performed many superhuman acts.
‘nato natya-dharo yatha’ (SB 1.8.19) as Kunti Maharani prays ‘nato natya-dharo yatha’. Just like a nata, the actor he performs so many different acts. One person but he is in this film role and same person plays another role. You don’t even recognize him. Good actors are not recognized. You take some time you are half way and the you realize ‘oh! he is that actor, I didn’t know he is the same actor’. Or sometimes they play double roles also, they play two roles. Kunti Maharani as He is, nata, ‘nato natya-dharo yatha‘, making You, knowing You becomes more tough, more difficult. ‘Oh My Lord, so please reveal.’

So the sages were very much interested in this topic of Sri Krsna along with Balaram. Only ‘saha ramena’ is said but they could have said ‘saha radhaya saha’, ‘mitrena saha’, with the cows, with the friends, with the parents, with so many. Its Krsna, when it comes to performing pastimes, He needs others for dealings. So there are so many dealings and in those dealings, there are so many devotees. So there is so much variety also in those dealings, flavors in those dealings, different rasas in those dealings. So its a big subject matter. Thus, the sages are asking only six questions in this first chapter of the first canto of Bhagavatam. So based on those six or answers to these six questions is entire Bhagavatam. So the question is also in code language. Question is brief while answer is long answer. The speaker knows that this person wants to know this also, that also, that also. Or if I stop, saying something briefly, he is going to ask me another question. So before even he asks another question, I better give a longer answer. Lesser questions, more answers. Otherwise, more he is going to ask, what about this? what about that?…Okay so we could stop there. So any questions, comments anyone has?

Devotee (1): Hare Krsna Maharaj I wanted to ask, why Balaramji sided with Duryodhana?
Gurumaharaj: You are not happy? (laughter). That’s special relationship and They are brothers, that’s one thing. They are both, They are family members. They are both Kurus. ‘pasyaitan samavetan kurun’ (BG 1.25). Lord krsna says, “oh you wanted to see who has come, assemble here for battling? Please take note. You are kuru, they are also kurus” so same family”. But Duryodhana also had a special soft corner for Balaram. He was like a disciple or student of Balaram. Balaram is very expert in the club, this whole kala, whole art that comes with; how to use the club. One time Balaram was in Mithila. Both Krsna and Balaram had gone to Mithila in search of this Syamantaka mani. So they did not find Satadhanva, They were chasing after and he was killed. So Krsna returned to Dwarka. Balaram stayed on and Duryodhana was taking lessons, taking association of Balaram and taking lessons from Balaram. I Am sure there are many other instances how they were associating together and they had a very sweet relationship. That’s why Balaram choose not to be part of that Kurukshetra battle. That meant battling against Duryodhana. So He chooses pilgrimage, so They are two brothers, slightly different. Not exactly just copy or duplicate of two persons. They exhibit different mellows, different relationships.

Devotee(2): I request, can you please sing ‘sundar te dyana ubhe vitevari’?

Gurumaharaj: I think tonight this will come up. Sure this song is part of ‘jao deva achiya gava’, is it okay? You hear that tonight if you get the pass, one who is asking this question. It’s not a free, probably you have to pay some entrance fee. So it’s not a free song (Laughter). You have to pay some..
Devotee(3): In the song ‘ei baro karuna koro vaisnava gosai’, there is a line ‘darsane pavitra koro-ei tomara gun’. So can you please explain whether it means seen by pure devotee or even conditioned soul sees the pure devotee and he gets purified. Because in the first case if only by pure devotee’s glance conditioned soul will be purified. Then the chances of purification of the conditioned souls are less.
Gurumaharaj: In the beginning of the Bhagavatam, it says. The reciters of the Bhagavatam, the listener of the Bhagavatam and one who asks questions, one who inquires, one who gives answer, one who hears; they are all purified.

Like Ganga purifies residence of three lokas- svarga, mrityu loka, patala. There is a patala Ganga. So svarga Ganga, Ganga is here. So seeing a sadhu, ‘darsane pavitra koro ei tomara gun’. I would just say that, well we have to understand what this darshan is. A lot of time saying, ‘oh I am going for darshan of this maharaj or that maharaj or that sadhu or that saint. I am going for darshan. So darshan, what is darshan? Seeing is darshan but is that seeing just the seeing the sadhu or how is he looking like? When someone came to see sadhu and he was giving a talk. And the sadhu had a big beard and he was shaking. One person in the audience was very jubilant to see whenever the shaking of the beard took place. When he was inquired, ‘why are you so happy?’ And he said, ‘as your beard shakes, I am reminded of my goat! (laughter) when my goat walks. Sometimes goat has little beard like hair hanging. They shake also, I am happy, I am reminded of my goat. So it could be just physical seeing. Darshan, you will give me Krsna.

‘dhai tava pache pache, ami to kangala krsna krsna boli dhai tava pache pache’.
‘krsna se tomara, krsna dite paro tomara sakati ache’.

I am running after you or I have come to you for your darshan. Because I know, you are competent to give me Krsna. You have Krsna and you could give that Krsna to me. So how does sadhu give Krsna? He talks about Krsna. He shares his realizations of Krsna. That is how Krsna is transferred from person to person. Someone has Krsna and he talks about Krsna. He describes Krsna and sings glories of Krsna. Then that Krsna is transplanted from heart to heart. Then other person gets Krsna, to know Krsna, follow Krsna or follow the process that will help one realize Krsna. So more important than just seeing is hearing sadhu and this is darshan. Darshan is what he is showing you. With this torchlight of knowledge, he shows you. He gives eyes to see. ‘caksur unmilitam yena tasmai sri-guruve namah’. ‘caksur unmilitam’, he opens your eyes and he gives you right kind of vision eyes so that you could see. So that is real darshan. That is darshan.

One time Bhaktisiddhanta he was giving a talk to some group of disciples. And one of the disciples, follower went away and returned after some time. So Bhaktisiddhanta, ‘where did you go?’ ‘Guru maharaj, I went for darshan of the deities’. Bhaktisiddhanta was not pleased with this response. He said,’ I was here to give you eyes to see so that you could see the Lord. And you preferred to see Lord on your own and you went to see the deity?’ Then he inquired, ‘so how was your, dear disciple, how was your eyes exercise? You went?’ Yes I went. ‘What did you do, you opened your eyes?’ Yes I opened. Closed, yes close. ‘Open close, open close, so how was your eyes exercise?’ So that seeing without knowledge, without direction, without whole process which we learn from sadhu or saint. Or when we take darshan from without hearing and guidance, you won’t see much. So, anyways there is a big pile of questions here.
Devotee(4): Will you tell, although Krsna performs really so many superhuman activities, still attraction is not there. Whereas other many common man does something, I get attracted to him.

Gurumaharaj: Yes, this is conditioning. We are conditioned to hear about mundane people, mundane activities, ordinary activities of ordinary people. So we have to get rid of this and by hearing and hearing and hearing. One time someone asked. ‘How do I become addicted to the chanting of the holy name?’ You understand addiction? Addiction to chanting. Then Prabhupada said,’ how does one become drug addict?’ How does become addicted to the drugs or drinking addiction? Initially you may not even interested. Then, reluctantly you drink. And another time and another time and another time and then time comes you cannot leave without it. You have become now drug addict or this addict that addict. So he said, chanting is also like that. Or hearing about Krsna and then eventually get attracted to Krsna is also like that. You hear once, you hear twice, you hear and you hear and you hear hear hear hear. For sure, if you are a soul (laughter). If you are a soul and this whole process of…There is also difference between hearing and hearing. If you adore shradha, beginning with the faith. ‘shraddha van labhate jnanam’ (BG 4.39). Krsna says in Bhagavad-Gita, ‘shraddha van labhate jnanam’. If you hear with shraddha, you will acquire knowledge, realize Krsna. You will get attracted to Krsna. ‘samsayatma vinasyati'(BG 4.40), but if you have doubt and questions, then ‘vinasyati’. You will not get attracted. You will remain what you are. Keep hearing the jaundice, Prabhupada gave that example. Chanting and chanting but no attraction. There is nothing else, there is no other solution. The jaundice, I have jaundice, so what is the cure? The sugar candy is the cure. And I tried to taste the sugar candy. How does it taste like? Very bitter.

So one may go to the doctor, ‘oh, that sugar candy is so bitter. Is there any other medicine?’ No other medicine. You want to be cured, then go on eating, go on eating. So as one follows that prescription, he eats. He is cured, he eats more, he is cured more. He eats, he cured more. Each time he eats, he also begins tasting the sweetness of the sugar candy. Then time comes when he is completely cured.. Then he demand, ‘is there more sugar candy? No no, do get it.’ Someone say, ‘it’s out of stock, finished’. No, go buy more. So he was saying, ‘no sugar candy is so bitter, how could….’. Likewise Krsna – His superhuman activity – no attraction ..Well, go on hearing, go on chanting, go on. Of course association of devotees, go on honoring prasadam. That’s the whole process, whole package.
Devotee 5 : Why we don’t discuss the disappearance pastimes of Lord Sri Krsna in detail. What is the specific reason?
Gurumaharaj: We do, that is also part of the Bhagavatam. 11th canto, there is a description how Lord…Well first all His associates, He made them disappeared by killing each other. When they were sent away or sent back, then there is a description. How He was sitting on the bank of Sarasvati. The way He was sitting, where, His thigh, right thigh on like that one of those. His four-handed is leaning against young banyan tree. Then the hunter, he thought that must be deer and shooting. Then he comes forward then the hunter begs for forgiveness. Finally Lord departs. Well yes, so both are there. The janma is always…of course there is no death. When we went in ’78 to Prabhasksetra, the exact spot where Krsna sat on the bank of Sarasvati. That place is there even now.
It was there in ’78 and is there for past 5000 years ago. So we read the sign that said ‘God died here’. I was travelling with another of my godbrother. He was from England, Ravi and he couldn’t stand. When he read the sign, he said, ‘Who is it? Who made this sign?’ He was trying to get into some ashram around there to find out who has committed this offence, calling that ‘Lord died here.’ Because Lord never dies. That was out of ignorance. So there is nothing like janma and mrityu. Lord’s appearance is transcendental. Lord’s disappearance is also transcendental. So we may not always dwell so much on the disappearance part because then one may feel separation. Oh, Lord left the abode, Lord left, Lord left. Then one may miss Him. So I mean not to become emotional and feeling vacant without him. Knowing that He departed, He left the world, He disappeared. So we talk little less and more of janma but not that we don’t know. Sukadeva Goswami has described appearance of the Lord and he has also described disappearance of the Lord.

Devotee(6): If the pastime of the Lord and the concept of the duality of soul and super soul is so dear. Then why there are so serious followers of advaita, who study same scripture but totally different philosophy.
Gurumaharaj: Well advaita is, you know dvaita and advaita. We are, this is dvaita, advaita, dvaita, vaishistadvaita are technically different names. Basically the vaisnavas and mayavadis or nirakarvadis and sakarvadis. They have existed simultaneously from the beginning or always. Lord appears in three features.
‘brahmeti paramatmeti bhagavan iti sabyate’ (SB 1.2.11).

He appears as Brahman, all pervading Brahman. He appears as localized super soul and He appears as Supreme Personality of Godhead. So some realize that impersonal Brahman and think this is it. I have realized everything. But this is blunder on their part. If they, ‘could I have realized this much Lord. Maybe there is more to know.’ So if they keep making progress, they know the super soul, they know the Supreme Personality of Godhead. That’s the way to do it. But some get stuck with the Brahman and then they are convinced like that. That is their misfortune but we know many examples also. Four Kumaras were impersonalist initially and then they come to Visnu temple. At the entrance they stood, they smell the nice fragrance incense and the flower and tulasi. Just by smelling that fragrance coming from the Personality of God. Or lotus feet of God, their all impersonalism was finished. Well our Sukadeva Goswami, he was kind of satisfied being advaita vadi, being impersonalist. As the result, he stayed in the womb for, how many years? 16 years as you chant 16 rounds. 16 years and then, “I am happy here. I don’t want to be troubled by the ‘brahma satya jagat mitya’. Or as impersonalist of Benaras, they say that.

“kaupinvantah khalu bhagyavanta
Vedanta vakyesu sada ramantah” (Sripada Sankaracarya).

We study Vedanta and they find their impersonal Brahman there. Oh! We are so fortunate, we are so fortunate, we are renounced. They are great renunciates, they are vairagis. So they like ‘kalau bhagyavanta, kaupin’. All that we need is ‘kaupinvantah, kaupin..’ ‘kaupinvanta khalu bhagyavanta, Vedanta vakyesu sada ramantah’. We are just happy with this Vedanta and impersonal – ‘aham brahmasmi, aham brahmasmi’. Caitanya Mahaprabhu was in Benaras and everywhere Caitanya brahma. All these mantra were being chanted, surcharged all that atmosphere with that. Then Caitanya Mahaprabhu starts there….

“Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare”

So one mantra is Hare Krsna, talks of Personality of Godhead. He has name also and qualities. ‘aham brahmasmi’, Brahman that is effulgence coming from this Maha mantra, coming from person. So Hare Krsna or Krsna is complete. Krsna means super soul also. Krsna also meaning Brahman, inclusive. But some goes for just one aspect and stuck and the like the jnana yoga and karma yoga, astanga yoga, bhakti yoga.
Some think the jnana yoga is complete in itself. Some remain karma yogis, some astanga yogis. But in fact they should, if they keep making progress, karma yogi, jnana yogi, astanga and come to the platform of bhakti yogis. Then they could become bhakti yogis from beginning to end. Some stops somewhere, some ladders, some level and jump to conclusion. Yes, this is it, we got it, we got it. It’s here, we realized it, but if they have patience, if they come in contact with vaisnavas, then they will make further progress. And we have seen that. We have seen impersonalist becoming personalist. But we don’t find any example in Bhagavatam of personalist becoming impersonalist. It is only one way tract.

[Devotee (7) asking question in Marathi and Gurumaharaj giving answer in Marathi]- Maharaj please tell any incident or pastime between you and Srila Prabhuapada.
Maharaj: There are many I have written a book you can read the book. I met Prabhupada in the year 1972, I had first seen in him on stage giving lectures but had never met him personally. In 1972 when we went all brahamacaris of Mumbai to Vrindavan in Kartik. Prabhupada was residing at Radha Damodhar temple, so we went to Radha Damodhar temple took darshan and we were searching Prabhupada . There was a small room where Prabhupada was staying, when we 10-15 devotees entered the room it was houseful. So Prabhupada was staying in such a small room like Goswamis. While going from Matura to Vrindavan we had seen the sunrise. Our leader Panchadravida prabhu started glorifying Prabhupada.
He said –“Prabhupada you are brilliant as the sun” when we meet our spiritual master we should glorify our spiritual master. Then after that Prabhupada was looking at us and listening to our report s of -book distribution, construction… when Prabhupada was looking at us it was like a camera – he was scanning us. When my turn Prabhupada’s glance would stop at me then again he would look at all of us. Next time again his glance stooped at me. That time I was thinking what is so special in me that Prabhupada is stoping at me (Laughter) either I have not put tilak or my button is broken (Laughter). I was thinking like that but I could not come to the conclusion why Prabhupada is stopping at me. Then Prabhupada said “Stop it” then I understood what I needed to stop. In those days I had a habit of shaking my thigh while listening, I was listening but was not aware that I was continuously shaking my thigh (Laughter). Then Prabhuapada said “Stop it”. Prabhupada said “stop it” since then its stopped (L aughter). Only when I have to demonstrate how I did it, I shake my thigh not otherwise. This is Prabhupada’s first order to me.
There are Vidhi- Do’s and Nished – Don’t, do this –don’t do this, so by this instruction Prabhupada told me to stop many things and then in 1972 in Radha Damodhar temple in kartik I got initiated and Prabhupada told me to chant Hare Krishna and what to stop he had already told.
So we stop.
His Holiness Lokanath Swami Maharaj ki jaya!!
Srila Prabhupada ki jaya!!

Let us all push forward the mission of Srila Prabhupada

Thank you for being here in good number. Happy birthday to me, good days have come. Its Lord’s mercy He gave me birth on this auspicious day. Lot of devotees come on this day to meet Lord. “vitthu maza lekurwada”.
I was born on tuesday in Aravade, Lord Rama was born on Tuesday. So they named me Raghunath as its Lord Rama’s name. My mummy mazi aai used to love me a lot. She used to take me to temple and she used to say fold your palms and pray and I used ask her what to pray?? And she used to say ask for Buddhi. Then Lord heard my prayers and finally I became Hare Krsna wala. Then my elder brother came to Mumbai to take me back. And said to Lord we never told to give him such Buddhi. My family used to think that one day Raghunath will become engineer and come to village with motorcycle. But I went with bullock cart with padayatra to Aravade. I was studying in Sangali initially but my family said you go to Mumbai University for higher studies. That’s how Lord inspired them to send me to Mumbai.
Then I went to Mumbai. Once in pandal program I was giving Introduction of Srila Prabhupada. I said Srila Prabhupada is exporter and importer; he exported holy name to America and imported American sandhus. I was lucky to have darshan of Srila Prabhupada. I was inspired by his kirtan. I always had this desire to serve country..humanity.. But was not sure how to start it.

“Yatha taror mula nesechanena” – When you put water at roots then fruits will come. Srila Prabhupada said we also want to serve our family, country, humanity then you should serve Lord. Then my eyes opened. We always have propensity to serve someone. So we should serve Lord. One is guru and other laghu. Phone has become cheap and talk has also become cheap. So if you want to really serve some one then serve Lord through Krsna everybody will be served. I also brought few books of Srila Prabhupada also japa mala.

Then I started living in kohinoor lane with some of my villagers in Mumbai. I was student of chemistry. And I used to keep grantha in the chemistry book and read. And my parents told my villages keep an eye on him he should not run away and they were happy seeing me reading rasayan that is chemistry. But they were not aware what rasayan I was reading. When nobody was in room I used to sing kirtan like I heard from Srila Prabhupada.

I used to regularly go to hare krsna land juhu then I decided jina yaha marna yaha… I wrote a letter to the president there to join. I wrote in the letter dazzling arti, ecstatic kirtan, prasdam, which I had copied from the pamphlet which I got from there. Then I went to meet the president and told him I want to join and he announced new bhakta here new bhakta here.

Britishers came for business here and then captured us. So Indians were not joining in Hare Krsna. Indian used to say these foreigners are CIA. Yes we are CIA- Caitanya Intelligence Agency... So very less Indians were joining. So the hare krsna land people were very happy to receive me they welcomed me. And then they took me to a place where a barber was waiting for me. So in one hour I was hare krsna devotee. Same evening they took me to a place and I was told to translate lecture of H.G. Gargamuni prabhu. So in two hours I became a preacher. Then my family came to know about me. They got the pamphlet of Hare Krsna festival. Then they understood. I would be there. Then my elder brother came to take me back. If you don’t come back mom will not live. Family was telling me stay at home we will make a temple here for you. But I wanted to stay in Hare Krsna temple. All villagers used to say. He was a very good boy now he has become mad. My mom went to an astrologer and he said he will come back. But his bhavisyavani went wrong. I went back to Hare Krsna land by Srila Prabhupada’s mercy.

Srila prabhupada made me fortunate and you also make others fortunate by giving them hari nama. Let us all push forward the mission of Srila Prabhupada. You will need to take now responsibility on your shoulders. Time is less and lot of seva is pending. I can’t do it alone… I need help… We all together will protect, expand, this Hare Krsna society. You all love Srila Prabhupada, you are premi bhakta of Srila Prabhupada. But Srila Prabhupada said you show your love by cooperating with each other after I am gone. This is how you show your love for me. Srila Prabhupada is siksha guru for all of us…… Every one related to Krsna is to glorified…

SrilaPrabhupada ki jai…

Japa seminar- Part 1 – The process of ‘krsna-aradhana’ is sankirtana”

Dated: 12.09.2012
Venue: Mauritius

So once again, I would like to thank you for good presence, big presence in small country. The big interest…I am sure you have so much interest in the Holy Name. It is one of the offences to keep the phones on (laughter). The 12th offence (laughter) is you have on phone next to you, we will get there. We will, I think this will come up again; but… (To someone in audience) That’s what you said right? Yes, your interest in Japa is very obvious here by the good turnout of devotees. This is Purushottam Month also, only few more, few more days to go; but, somehow, Japa retreat or Japa whatever, workshop or Japa, I don’t know what you, what name you have given, is becoming part of this Purushottam month. It’s becoming event, part of that “very” auspicious month. “Very” favourable for devotional service.

In fact, nothing works in this month, just the devotional service, no Karma Kanda. You don’t get any result of conduct Karma Kanda or Jnana Kanda which is “kevala visera bhanda” (Prema-bhakti candrika) also. In any case, just a pot of poison. According to our siddhanta, our stand, Karma Kanda is just a pot of poison.
So, only thing that works during this month, only thing that is beneficial, infact Radha-Krsna worship for this month is stressed very much which is the topmost thing to do. And the way we worship Radha-Krsna is “yajnaih sankirtana- prayair, yajanti hi su- medhasah” (SB 11.5.32). It requires intelligent person, brainy person to go for worshipping in yajnaih- by performance of sankirtana. So, you must be, you are very intelligent persons because you are always, not only during this month, but you are always worshipping the Lord by performance of Sankirtana. And sankirtana is congregational chanting or congregationally glorifying the Lord, in a broad sense which may not be always limited to chanting of ‘Hare Krsna’ but, there are related activities are also Sankirtana.

How Srila Prabhupada made the connection of the sounds at the construction site, at ‘Hare Krishna Land’, Juhu, Bombay during his days. We were proposing that there is so much noise here. So much “kat kat kat kat” (Guru Maharaj making sound) here, you should be in stationed elsewhere. Well, Prabhupada said, this is “music” for my ears. This is Radha-Rasbihari’s temple being built, so the sounds are not ordinary. This is also music, this is also “sankirtana.” So, only a pure devotee like Srila Prabhupada could make connection on those sounds as “sankirtana.” “Yajnaih sankirtana- prayair, yajanti hi su- medhasah”.
So, again then kirtana is, we do kirtana, Sankirtana, kirtana. While, we were just doing little bit of that with the use of Mrdanga and Kartals and, and last night what we had Oh! ..(Guru Maharaj laughing). There is a ISKCON kirtana standard committee. They may not approve of (Laughter) I am a member of that committee (Laughter). I don’t know how to deal with the situation; but… So, that’s, one way sankirtana. Congregational chanting and dancing with Mrdangas and kartals. And some other, maybe, Veena of Narada Muni is there and…
“prema dhala dhala sonara anga, carane nupura baje” (Gitavali, part one, Arunodaya-kirtana, text 2). Mahaprabhu is taking part in sankirtana and He is chanting and dancing prema dhala dhala sonara, His golden form is moving, swaying and He has tinkling, jingling bells around His ankles. So, that’s instrument also, some tinkling bells. He does not have to play that instrument separately with the hands. It is there around His ankles and as He dances, the jingling and tinkling of that bell, that’s instrument also. The bells… and then, and of course, other thing that we do is we take our Japa Mala and do yajnair sankirtana-prayair. We do our, the glorification of the Lord. Lord is glorified to, to our hearts content.

Of course, doing kirtana is the whole hearted and full-throated kirtan, out loud. And then, during japa, we may not be screaming or shouting out loud. Some meditative chanting we do. Or we do “murmuring.” On our beads, we chant japa. So, that’s the other way. Kirtan with group as big as possible and last night was a, quite a, quite group. I got the report there were over 700 devotees last night (Haribol!!!). You don’t know? You missed it? You were there? So, they said 700 devotees. 700 plates of prasadam were distributed. Maybe towards the end some more rushed in. So this Japa seminar, retreat, whatever the name is, this is happening during Caturmasya also. In the middle of caturmasya, there is sandwiched; this month is, two months of Caturmasya and then, Purushottam masa and then two more Caturmasya months to follow. So, it’s right in the middle and right towards the end of this month we are able to do “this” during this Caturmasya or oh no, Caturmasya and Purushottam masa. I just, probably you know, we were doing Kirtana Mela in Germany.

So, that was quite experience and we were in Radhadesh and we were doing kirtanas called “Stay high forever” Stay high forever kirtana. Prabhupada termed, he called this stay high forever. Whether you chant Hare Krsna with the drums, instruments or you chant on your beads, the idea is to stay high forever. Stay high, up there! Srila Prabhupada was referring to this as the drug. He said “I have a drug for you!” And then, those in the mid 60’s, those American boys and girls would jumpe “Oh! Swamiji has a drug for us!” (Laughter, Guru Maharaj laughing). They were into drugs and.., Prabhupada said “my drug is very special.” If you take this, you will stay high forever which is not the case with the other drug. I don’t think you know (laughingly). I only have heard (laughter) that you take the drug and you kind of go high. You begin floating or (laughing) they say you feel lighter and you feel relieved and no anxiety and you feel.., but, when the effect is over, then, what happens? They are low. Then next time, they take, well, a bigger dose, higher dose and then they go higher also. But, when the deep effect is over, they go “lower.” And like that, they increase the dose and then one time, they may go highest and opposite of that is lowest and from there they may never go (laughter) anywhere. They are stuck into that ignorance, the lowest mode of material nature. So, this is mundane thing, mundane world. This is all due to whatever you said, drugs or so-called mundane gratifications. Higher and then, lower, this up and down “dvandva mohena bharata” (BG 7.27).

But, this chanting, this sankirtana, this “japa” is meant to keep us only at high altitude. Elevation! and no degradation. Ya, so, we, we were doing ‘stay high forever’ kirtanas in Radhadesh and we also did Rama Katha in Czech Republic as we were doing Ramayana Katha and then… so, we are here, to do these japa sessions. So, we are today and tomorrow also? You will be coming back tomorrow? (Yes!) Or you are staying overnight or? But, you’ll be back! Ya? We expect you tomorrow or? – Yes! “Kal bhi aaoge ki nahi?” – Haan! (Hindi). Ok! (Guru Maharaj laughing out loud along with audience).

So, I think we have today and tomorrow. So, today we could say first session is already on. We started a little late and this goes up until four o’clock at which time there is prasadam for all. Yes? For one hour you’ll get a break and then, we resume at five o’clock. Than five to seven or something, Ya? So, these are the two slots for today. Two to four and five to seven. Ok! There is something already printed here or no, ok, let’s see what it is. Alright! And then tomorrow.., so, those who can attend Mangala Arati, they.., we have Mangala Arati at 4.30. So, 4.30 to 9.30 which includes, after mangala arati there will be japa session. Those who would be with us, we could chant together Japa. There is the Bhagavatam class followed by breakfast. At “9.30”, breakfast. Ok and then, Japa retreat session. I would call that as number three which is 10.30. Last for two hours- 10.30to 12.30. And then, again break for.., is it lunch break or? No! No! That’s a break, short break and then, then one to.., this is a longer one. One to… what I am looking at here, one to four! Oh, it’s longer sessions. And then, tomorrow is a marathon (laughing). And ya, four to seven it says. Ok, so, no! Four to five. Oh, that’s shorter one. Maybe we should.., 10.30 to 12.30 break and then one to four. Ok. Ok that switched (?) Ok, we’ll end at four. Ok so, I think you “have” this! … Yes. OH! (Guru Maharaj starts laughing). I thought you, you have to take notes. I was just… So, I see you already have a pretty good idea. “Better” idea than I (laughingly). So, this is our first introductory session. And… So, we already said some introductory matters and we could continue. Ya, something Harinama Mahatmya, you may want to call it or the glories of the “Holy Name!” And part of that, I want to do, quickly run through the Siksastaka. You are familiar with Siksastaka. And at, in fact, there is no greater or better glory of the Holy Name chanted in the form of this Siksastaka which has been chanted, these glories have been chanted by none other than the “Supreme.” “Supreme” Personality of Godhead, Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu ki… Jai!

Caitanya Mahaprabhu is glorifying the Holy name. His whole and sole purpose coming down here, in the midst of us, was to share this gift of the Holy Name. Just imagine, the “Supreme Lord.” Supreme Lord comes down to the Earth, why does He come? – “golokera prema-dhana, hari-nama sankirtana” (Srila Narottama dasa Thakura). To hand out the best of the gifts. So, “He!” He came down with the sankirtana. He came down here with this japa, Japa business. He gave us the business so that we could be in business. Japa has been given by Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu and He hasn’t given only, speeches, talks on Kirtana, the mahatmya and… In fact, Mahaprabhu has chanted more and spoken less. Talked less, chanted more.
So, He has spoken these eight verses of Siksastaka, He spoke other times glories of the Holy Name, but then these eight verses are very special. These, they have been attributed to the Lord. The Gita was spoken by Sri Krsna. What did Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu speak? What did He write? He wrote these Eight prayers. Of course, on behalf of Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, His Associates were writing so many scriptures, books. But, personally Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu wrote only eight verses and they are known as Siksa astaka. Siksa is instructions and astaka- the eight verses. And the theme of this is the Holy Name. Stress of this is the Holy Name. And not that Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu compiled these eight verses and then published and “Ok”, do the mass distribution of this and He had nothing to do with. He is author, He doesn’t have to read them. But, Mahaprabhu, as we understand again and here is the Caitanya Caritamrta Antya-Lila means last, concluding pastimes. In that Antya-Lila, the very last chapter is the Siksastaka. You better know the location. Where is Siksastaka situated in Caitanya Caritamrta. It is the very last thing like “essence” of Caitanya Caritamrta Antya-Lila, chapter 20 – Siksastaka. And there is nothing more, this is it.

So, this way we could also understand the position, of the Siksastaka. This is something very tough thing. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu passed His nights testing the meaning Siksastaka prayers in the company of Svarupa Damodar Goswami and Ramananda Raya. So, He compiled and then, every night He has His most confidential associates around Him at Gambhira in Jagannath Puri. And He is… In this way, he became absorbed in ecstatic emotions. He relished the taste of reciting. This is another, also mentioned here, transcendental verses.

“ei-mata mahaprabhu vaise nilacale, rajani-divase krsna-virahe vihvale” (CC Antya 20.3). And of course, this, we just talked about the night, but during the day also, rajani? – “divase!” Day and night Lord is in this mood of separation, mentions here and.., So, He is reciting and remembering and getting absorbed in different emotion of these, these verses of Siksastaka. “nana-bhava uthe prabhura harsa, soka, rosa, dainyodvega-arti utkantha santosa” (CC Antya 20.5) – He relished the symptoms of various transcendental emotions, such as jubilation, lamentation, anger, humility, anxiety, grief, eagerness and satisfaction – (Translation). There is the whole waves of emotions of various kinds. “Sei sei bhave nija-sloka padiya, slokera artha asvadaye dui-bandhu lana” (CC Antya 20.6) – He would recite His own verses, expressing their meanings and emotions, and thus enjoy tasting them with these two friends – Translation). Ramananda Raya and Svarupa Damodara. Sometimes, Lord would be absorbed in a particular emotion and would stay awake all night reciting related verses and relishing their taste (20.7).

“sankirtana-yajne kalau krsna-aradhana” (C.C Antya 20.9). Then Mahaprabhu sharing everything He is talking now is only most essential, most confidential. So, one day, one night He said to His two friends – “sankirtana-yajne kalau krsna aradhana, sei ta ‘ sumedha paya krsnera carana” (CC Antya 20.9). “Dear friend, dear friends!” Not mummy (laughter) Dear friends- `That in this age of Kali, aradhana, krsna-aradhana is done by the intelligent people by performance of Sankirtana. So, Mahaprabhu has said this… in His own words, in Bengali words, Bengali language which is nothing but, just the translation of Bhagavatam verse that we had been talking about earlier. “krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam sangopangastra-parsadam yajnaih sankirtana-prayair yajanti hi su-medhasah” (SB 11.5.32). Not the first part, but, the later half, Mahaprabhu said that in Bengali language to His friends: “You know! The, the process of ‘krsna-aradhana’ is sankirtana.”

“nama-sankirtana haite sarvanartha-nasa” (CC Antya 20.11) and Mahaprabhu continued and Mahaprabhu quoted that verse. That same verse from Bhagavatam that we quote all the time, Mahaprabhu quoted that verse as it is which He had already said that in Bengali , to substantiate his statement he has quoted Bhagavatam verse “yajnaih sankirtana-prayair” and then He says more. “Nama-sankirtna haite sarvanartha-nasa”– By performance of nama sankirtana, the anarthas, all anarthas are destroyed. “Sarva- subhodaya” – all auspiciousness arrives. Krsna-premera ullasa – and there will be the Love of God would be invoked “initiating the flow of waves of love for krsna.” These are Mahaprabhu’s thoughts. Here, Mahaprabhu recites now the, the first of the eight astakas to His, those two friends with Him. So, beginning of this chapter, Mahaprabhu is reciting one of the astakas and then, He makes some comments, few comments Himself. These are His texts, His verse and then, some emotions. Just sampling of that in included here. Not all that, all the waves of emotion arrive. They are not all here.

“ceto-darpana-marjanam bhava-maha-davagni-nirvapanam
sreyah-kairava-candrika-vitaranam vidya-vadhu-jivanam
anandambudhi-vardhanam prati-padam purnamritasvadanam
sarvatma-snapanam param vijayate sri-krishna-sankirtanam”
(Sri Siksastaka, verse 1).

So, Mahaprabhu says “param vijayate sri-krsna sankirtanam.” All glories! Not only all glories, but “victory” to the sankirtana. You may want to call it movement or just sankirtana and its sankirtana movement, of course. And Mahaprabhu is sankirtanaika-pitarau.

“ajanu-lambita bhujau kanakavadatau sankirtanaika-pitarau kamalayataksau
visvambharau dvija-varau yuga-dharma-palau vande jagat priya-karau karunavatarau”

That is introduction, as soon as you open ’Caitanya Bhagavat’ which is another scripture, you find this as the first verse. Mahaprabhu is glorified as “ajanu-lambita bhujau” and “sankirtanaika pitarau.” The founding father of sankirtana movement and of course, he is not alone. That is why it says sankirtanai ka “pitarau.” Pitarau means two, Ramah- Ramau. You know little Sanskrit, Ramau. Sankirtanaika-“pitarau”, “kamalayataksau” “dvija-varau” Ÿuga-dharma palau.” You see, everywhere “au, au, au.” (Laughter). This means two, two of them. This, Gauranga Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu are sankirtanaika pitarau- Founding Fathers of the sankirtana movement.

So, “param” vijayate! Mahaprabhu,
“param” vijayate! Victory of the Holy Name. So, that is the eighth, 1/8 (one eighth) part, portion of this first siksastaka. Param vijayate sri-krsna-sankirtanam. And there are seven, there are seven other components in the siksastaka. First line has two of them- ceto-darpana, “marjanam!” stop there, that’s one. Then, maha-davagni “nirvapaman!” Whenever is a nasal sound, then you stop that’s two. Then, vidya-vadhu – “jivanam.” So, there are seven of these and these are the, you may call the glories or the adjectives- ‘Visheshana’ or in Sanskrit vishesha, visheshana. These are seven visheshana. Seven glories or attributes of the sankirtana movement, Sankirtana! Each one is a special feature, description the quality, “adjective” of that sankirtana.

So, we don’t have such luxury, right now, to go through this step by step. Sometimes, there are seminars given on siksastaka and that takes one week just to go through this, this seven- eight verses. And we have Bhaktivinoda Thakur and Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakur amongst others, they have written commentaries on siksastakas also. So “anandambudhi-vardhanam”- Always expanding the ananda and ceto darpana marjaman you understand? Darpana- Cleansing. Wherever there is a black spot, cleansing. Mahamantra chanting does the cleansing of the heart, the consciousness. Davagni- “Maha-davagni” we are being “burnt!” samsara-davanala-lidha loka (Sri Sri Gurv-astaka). The first thing that comes out of Hare Krsna devotee’s mouth as he gets up and faces the Deities and in the morning, takes ‘Darsana’- Mangala arati – samsara-dava. This, world is, what kind of world is this? Samsara-davanal this forest fire. Same thing – maha-davagni-nirvapanam. So, that fire of the material existence is extinguished by this sankirtana movement. Tava kathamrtam (Gopi Gita, text 9) Gopis said here Tava kathamrtam, what does your kathamrta do? Tapta-jivanam. The life that is on fire- tapta-jivana- the kathamrta. Here is Namamrta, sankirtana, they are not different.

So, maha-davagni, like that’s all the benefit “sarvatma-snapanam” Sarva, atma snapanam. Snapanam meaning taking bath. So, as one is involved, engaged in “sankirtana”, what happens? His atma takes full bath in that sankirtana, the full Abhishek. The living entity is bathed or swimming, drowning; but, happy. If someone is drowning, OH Help! Help! Help! Drowning, Help! Help! But if you are drowning in this, the sankirtana, then you don’t call for help. You are nicely situated. You are “very” happy to be “drowned” in this ocean.

avatirne gaura-candre vistirne prema-sagare, yena majyanti majyanti te maha anartha sagare” (Prabhodananda Saraswati, Caitanya Candramrta). And this is in Caitanya-candramrta- it says Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared and what did He do? “avatirne gaura-candre vistirne prema-sagare”. He expanded the prema sagara. And it is “here” now, there is sagara all around us, ocean all around us. But, then on the Island, there is the ocean, the sankirtana.

So, avatirne gaura-candre vistirne “prema”-sagare. And Lord appeared and He expanded that ocean of love of God- prema sagara. And then, next it says “yena majyanti-majyanti” – those who do not throw themselves into this prema sagara. ye “na” majyanti. Those who do not drown, do not throw themselves, do not dive deeper into this prema sagara, well for them there is another sagara. This is maha anartha-sagare. Take note of two sagaras, Prema sagara and maha anartha sagara. So, those who do not get into this sankirtana sagara, prema sagara, only other sagara available around, only option is? – maha anartha-sagara. Not only anartha, but maha anartha sagara. So, that is why it takes intelligence to make the choice. Take a pick! Prema sagara or maha anartha sagara. So, intelligent person goes for “yajnaih sankirtana- prayair, yajanti hi su- medhasah”. So like this, Mahaprabhu has, Himself, glorified this sankirtana in this first verse. Or He could, later on go little deeper and try to understand how there are seven different attributes of the sankirtana movement or chanting, right there.
“Sankirtana haite papa-samsara-nasana” (CC Antya 20.13) He says, now He makes little comment. This is Mahaprabhu’s words that sankirtana destroys the papa of, in this world.

‘Citta-suddhi, sarva bhakti-sadhana-udgama’ (CC 20.13)
And then, “cita”-suddhi, Citta-consciousness. Suddhi- the purification takes place. And this is the source of all the “sarve bhakti-sadhana”. Bhakti is life of devotion. This is the means, original means of the life of devotion, “ Krsna-premodgama, premamrta-asvadana, krsna-prapti, sevamrta-samudre majjana” (CC Antya 20.14).

Ya, similar thoughts which we already talked, Krsna- prema -udgama, premamrta-asvadana. This is Hindi, Aap logon ke liye Hindi mein Mahaprabhu bol rahe hein (Guru Maharaj speaking Hindi). It’s very similar. Premamrta-asvadana, krsna-prapti, sevamrta-samudre majjana. And then, as one takes to this sankirtana, then, “seva amrta samudra.”. There was the prema sagara and now it is mentioned He has taken, accepted the sankirtana. Then, he has received seva because as one is chanting “Hare krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hara Hare”, what is he doing? Is he doing something or just saying this mantra? Utterance is there or else, and thoughts are supposed to be accompanying that utterance of the Holy Name. And one thought that Prabhupada always mentioned was thought of, it’s a prayer, begging for service of the Lord. Oh Lord! I am yours Oh ! Lord, please engage me in Your service oh! Lord, Oh! Pleasure, pleasure potency of the Lord, Oh! Radhe, Oh Krsna. So, then, Caitanya Mahaprabhu says seva-amrta samudra. Now he has another samudra, he has another ocean which is also nectarian. Seva-amrta samudra or seva amrta sagara and “majjana.” And devotee immerses, immersing. This is Mahaprabhu’s.., “The result of chanting is that one awakens his love for Krsna and tastes transcendental bliss. Ultimately, one attains the association of Krsna and engages in His devotional service, as if immersing himself in a great ocean of love.” (Translation CC Antya 20.14)

These are Mahaprabhu’s confidential thoughts and words. Then, next verse,

“ namnam akari bahudha nija-sarva-saktis
tatrarpita niyamitah smarane na kalah
etadrisi tava kripa bhagavan mamapi
durdaivam idrisam ihajani nanuragah (Sri Siksastaka, verse 2).

So, Lord has further glorified the Holy Name- “namnam akari bahudha nija sarva-saktis”. How potent is the Holy Name. How potent is the Holy Name? Lord has invested “all” His energies. nija! Take the note of this two little words, but important ones. He has invested energies, whose energies has he invested? Nija – His own energy. And how much energy has he invested. nija, “sarva”-saktis. All His energy he has invested in the Holy Name of the Lord. So, who is more powerful? The Lord or His Holy Name? (Answers from audience- Holy Name! – laughter). I was expecting you would say they are both equally powerful. All energy of the Lord, all that is in Him, all that in the Name. Well, some time, they do sing “Hari se bada Hari ka nama.” – (Hindi expression – Greater than Hari is hari’s name). “Hari se bada hari ka nama.” And they say this, that bada Hari ka nama, this bada hari ka nama- Hari se bada. Certainly not less, bada not chota, never chota, no less.

So, all the energies have been invested in the name and what other concessions are there? There are no hard or fast “rules” it says. “niyamitah smarane na kalah”– That’s another, not only all the energies, all powers, but no hard and fast “rules.” “etadrisi tava kripa” – and this is Your kindness my Lord. Mahaprabhu is also taking stand now, also as He is a chanter, He is a devotee. Now, He is facing the Lord and addressing the Lord- “yes this all You have done!” All Your powers invested in the Holy Name, no hard and fast rules and his is Your kripa, bhagavan mamapi. But, using the word ‘api’ – “but” Ifs and buts. No ifs and buts! But, here Mahaprabhu is coming: “but!” all these as just described, “but!” What is but? “durdaivam!” – It’s very unfortunate situation. What is that misfortune of myself? – na anuragah- I do not have attraction- I don’t have attachment to these Names My Lord! iha jani. iha, iha meaning in these names, iha. ajani means not, not produced, not… ya ajani. They are not there, in me, ‘araga’ is not there. na anuragah in this Holy Name and this is misfortune. Of course ee can’t say Caitanya Mahaprabhu has no anuraga in the Holy Name. Could you say that? Mahaprabhu has no attraction, no attachment, no ruci, is that the case? He is taking the stand on behalf of us. We should be saying this. If the honesty was the best policy (laughter), then, we should be talking like this. “I have no attachment, I have no attraction.” Is that the case? I think many of you would also admit that, think that way. Or, ya some ruci but, not enough. More! I would like to get more ruci, more anuraga. So, that’s when I think or, the Japa retreat session comes into the picture or maybe it’s also kind of response to this.
Ok I have “durdaivam idrisa ihajani na anuragah” That maybe the starting point of the, or what motivated us to come to this Japa retreat. I don’t have enough attachment, attraction. I want to increase my attachment to the chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord. So, then, I think that’s something that is gathering us here, all of us together to look into this and see whether how we could move forward or increase our or what to do. So, what to do? Mahaprabhu has, of course, He has raised this emotion or question and immediately He has presented the answer also to this question in nutshell and what is that?

Trinad api sunicena taror api sahisnuna, amanina manadena kirtaniyah sada harih” (Sri Siksastaka, verse 3).
Just now there was no anuragah, there was no attraction, no attachment. It’s becoming very hard for, struggling to get some names out of the mouth. Struggling, “struggling” – They are not coming out. Not naturally coming out. No attraction, they force themselves. And then, something happens in between and now what is happening? – “kirtaniyah sada harih”. So, this person is chanting all the time. He is doing kirtana, chanting all the time. So, what happened? Mahaprabhu has said. In Sanskrit he said “trinad api sunicena” – trina means straw in the street and nica means down. And ‘su’- means even more down, more humble. Straw is humble, but then, Mahaprabhu says more humble than the straw in the street (laughingly). As you trample all over these straws, you walk “all” over. Does any straw beats you with another straw? Takes some straw nearby and beats you, or runs after “Hey!” (Laughter), no courtesy! You are just walking all over me! So, not only trinad api, nicena, not nicena, “su” nicena. “su” nicena. That’s why the translation is lower than a straw on the street. Not as same as straw in the street, but more lower than a straw in the street. Anyway, we can’t get into the vyakhya of the, the comments.
And “taror api sahisnuna” and tolerance. The “humility” – this was humility part and then, tolerance part. How much tolerant? ‘taror api sahisnun’- Sehenshil (tolerant in Hindi). How much? More than the trees, trees are all around and they tolerate all the rain of either, Mauritius has all the seasons. I think in one day you get all the six seasons (Guru Maharaj and everybody laughing). You go through six season or this morning there was winter (laughter). Here it is sunny, there was, it also rained. And it was raining on the way (laughter).

So, the, the trees go through all these seasons and then; they just tolerate all this inconvenience caused by seasonal changes. Go through the rain and the wind and Sun and the human beings are cutting and beating the trees, they don’t complain. You may be cutting some branches of the tree and then, if you are tired you could go sit down under the same tree, in the shade of the same tree. Does that tree say “Hey fool!” You are just cutting my branches which are like my arms and now you want to rest! So, the trees are tolerant. So tolerant like the tree and what else has to happen? “Trinad api sunicena taror api shisnuna “amanina mana dena” kirtaniyah sada harih”
Amanina- Not expecting any respect for himself, herself. Not expecting any respect, on the contrary, doing what? amanina ‘manadena.’ Amani is one word and manada another word. So, it gets transformed here. amani, amanina – by giving all, not expecting any respect for oneself. And manadena, manada – the giver of honor. Because ‘mana’, mana is honor, ‘da’ is giver. The giver of honor. Becoming giver of the honor, honoring others to extent of serving others. Not just lip service. So, this is important item. I mean, they are all important items. This trinad api sunicena taror api sahisnuna. But, the straw and the tree is talked about. We may not be dealing with them so much, when it comes to, you know, day to day dealings in, as we lead our lives, then we have to deal with others, devotees all the time and this factor amanina manadena, this has to be practiced, understood. Can do the review of our own performance, our own dealings, introspection and see how we are doing with, our performance with this amanina and manadena. Ya, specially vaisnavas and vaisnava aparadha. That we may talk about later on. Vaisnava aparadha could be disastrous results.

Once we were chanting, but now we are not chanting or we don’t have attraction for chanting! What happened? We may not realize, but lot of time, because we offended vaisnava. We offended some devotee. And now, you got the punishment. What is your punishment? Now you don’t like Holy Name anymore. So, “amanina manadena kirtaniyah sada harih”. Devotees are very dear to the Lord. All the living entities are very dear to the Lord. But; Lord takes that as an offence. Oh! you know, I just offended this person. But; that is becoming offence of the Holy Name. Sometimes difficult to understand. I offended this person, but how is that Nama aparadha? Well, Lord takes it personally. Ok, you were thinking that you did not offend Me, but you offended My devotee. But, my devotee is very dear to Me. Lord takes it personally. Lord takes it as if “you have offended Me!” My devotee is not different from Me or He is very dear to Me and so, we offend some person, but becomes a nama aparadha, krsna aparadha
“Yei ye magaye, tare deya apana-dhana gharma-vrsti sahe, anera karaye raksana” (CC Antya 20.24). Caitanya Mahaprabhu shared some of His emotions. “The tree delivers its fruits, flowers and whatever else it possesses to anyone and everyone. It tolerates scorching heat and torrents of rain, yet it still gives shelter to others.” And there are more thoughts of Mahaprabhu before we come to the next verse which is

“na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagad-isa kamaye
mama janmani janmanisvare bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki tvayi” (Sri Siksastaka, verse 4).

Sraddha to prema, you heard of that? From faith, initial faith to the topmost ladder of krsna prema, love of Godhead. The siksastaka is talking that also, what is not step by step, you don’t find it one after the other, but, it is all those sraddha and then what? And sadhu sanga, bhajana kriya, anartha nivrtti and nistha, ruci, asakti, bhava and krsna-prema. So, these verses are dealing with that subject matter. It is a nutshell, it is also talking. Siksastaka is also talking about sambandha jnana, Sambandha, abhidheya and? – prayojana. If you know this, Gaudiyas are into this and this is found everywhere also. This sambandha jnana. And you worship, you are supposed to worship Radha-Madanmohan! Then, “abhidheya!” – relationship. Then, getting settled in devotional service. Radha-Govinda, worship of Radha-Govinda. Go higher for prayojana, the final destination, you worship Radha-Gopinatha and then, and that’s the prema is the prayojana.

So, the siksastaka is talking about sambandha jnana, abhidheya, prayojana is also described in these eight verses. You will also find, the Sadhana Bhakti and Raganuga Bhakti or Vaidi Bhakti, Raganuga Bhakti is also described here. Or vaidi sadhana Bhakti as well as Bhava Bhakti you’ll find here. Prema bhakti thoughts are also here. The first five verses they talk about Sadhana and then, sixth verse there is some bhava and seventh verse also has a bhava and seventh verse also little prema and then eighth verse is just the prema. Those emotions are, they have been integrated in these eight verses. So, here, there is something like anarthas. “Na dhanam, janam na sundarim kavitam va jagad-isa kamaye” In the commentaries by our Bhaktivinoda Thakura, Bhaktisiddhanta, it is also said this is like four purusarthas. This verse is talking of purusarthas. Dharma, artha, kama, moksa! If you take a closer look at this, you will find dharma, artha, kama, moksa. Moksa is – mama janmani janmani, no I am not interested in moksa. That part is there and what about kama? – “na dhanam, na janam, na sundarim kavitam”. So what you interested in? – pancam purusartha! I want just the Lord and His service. So, na dhanam, na janam, na sundarim, na kavitam, kavitam. This is also like a bhukti (enjoying the result on action). No bhukti, no, no, no bhukti. This list is also bhukti list, dhanam, janam. Wealth and the women or men or enjoyment, sake of enjoyment. Sundarim kavitam and all jagad-isa kamaye – the wordly desires.
</strong “bhukti-mukti-siddhi-kami — sakali asanta, krsna-bhakta— niskama, ataeva ‘santa” (CC Madhya 19.149). So, just in one verse, there are lots of very foundational philosophy of Gaudiya vaisnavas, vaisnavism is been compacted. So, oh Lord of the universe, I do not desire material wealth. Materialistic followers (laughingly), ok the materialistic followers. Otherwise spiritualistic are ok. Spiritual followers are I do not want a beautiful wife or the fruitive activities described in the flowery language or I don’t want all this. All I want life after life is unmotivated devotional service unto You! I just want service. “ Janmani janmani, bhavatad bhaktir ahaituki” And what kind of Bhakti? – ahaituki- No cause. Why not? Some say why do Bhakti? Why do you do Bhakti? All those, your parents may be, at some point or others – why Bhakti? Our response should be why not Bhakti? What else is there to do? What do you mean why Bhakti? Why Bhakti meaning they want to know the cause. What is the cause? Why should one do Bhakti? What is the purpose? What will you gain? ‘Pet bharega’ (Hindi)? - They say, pet bharta hain? So, ahaituki – no cause, Just we are meant to serve the Lord that’s all, that’s our constitutional position. “ayi nanda-tanuja kinkaram patitam mam vishame bhavambudhau
kripaya tava pada-pankajasthita-dhuli-sadrisam vicintaya (Sri Siksastaka, verse 5
).

Now, this is part of sambandha jnana or some helplessness calling out, Help- Help. And why should You help me? Oh! ayi nanda-tanuja kinkaram, Ayi means Oh, ayi means Oh! nanda-tanuja – Oh son of Nanda Maharaj, ayi nanda-tanuja kinkaram…mam. Who am I? I am kinkara – servant. What kind of servant? Who is always eager to render service and he is when inquiring kim karomi, kim karomi, kim, kim ,kim kim, kim , kim karomi. This is what could I do? Please tell me what I could do, please tell me what could I do- Kim. So, he becomes kinkara. Because he is always very eager to serve. If it is lady, it becomes kinkari. Kinkara and kinkari. So, kimkaromi? What could I do? He is always eager- That’s kinkara.

“Ayi nanda-tanujakinkaram…mam vishame bhavambudhau” But unfortunately, now I am fallen in this ocean of maha anartha sagara or of this turbulent ocean of material existence. So, my dear Lord, kripaya tava pada-pankajasthita-dhulisadrisam vicintaya. I’m just being tossed from here to there. These waves are just throwing me all over. I need shelter! I need some fixed position, something that I could hold onto. Everything that I had come across thus far were just mobile and moving and in transit or thinking that this is something I’ll become fixed; but that itself was, had no shelter but, I want to, now, want to catch hold of Your Lotus Feet. So, make me just a dust particle of Your Lotus Feet. As we chant Hare Krsna, whenever do japa, these thoughts are also desirable. One should be thinking, it’s not a thoughtless or mindless chanting. While chanting, these thoughts, the sampling of the thought is here. Oh, ayi nanda-tanuja kinkaram patitam mam vishame bhavambudhau, kripaya tavapada-pankajasthita-dhulisadrisam vicintaya.

You don’t have to make me anyone important. You don’t have to make me crown on Your head or some pearl , garland around your neck. Just a dust particle of course he’s taking a very much humble position and here is, I like this, I mean, Mahaprabhu is talking to Ramananda Raya and (prabhoda ane). Who is that? Svarupa Damodara and He is saying “tomara nitya dasa mui, toma pasariya”(CC Antya 20.33). Lord said that, ok I’m kinkara, I am your servant. So, you know every servant gets a salary. Right? ‘Vetan’ -Lord said vetan. At the end of the week, end of the month he gets his cheque. So, I am your servant, I should also get some vetan, I should also get some wages. Then Mahaprabhu said that give Me prema. Pay me in the form of prema. Let the prema, love, your love, your krsna-prema, let that be my salary. I’m your servant, I don’t want those Mauritian rupees or European Euros or American Dollars or this, that. Just give me some prema. Just give me prema. Let that be my payment. Mahaprabhu has said this.

“nayanam galad-asru-dharaya vadanam gadgada-ruddhaya gira
pulakair nicitam vapuh kada tava-nama-grahane bhavishyati
(Sri Siksastaka, verse 6)

So, now these are the higher realms, emotions- the bhava. The bhava is expressed here, Bhava bhakti. So, Mahaprabhu is asking “when would that day come?” As I chant and I chant and I chant. “Nayanam galad-asru-dharaya”- There will be asru dhara. Like a torrents of rain gliding down my cheeks. Nayanam…asru dharaya vadanam gadgada-ruddhaya gira. And when would my voice be chocked up and puakair nicitam vapuh – when would my body begin trembling, oh Lord, kada tava-nama-grahane bhavisyati. Bhavisyati- when would that time come as I chant the Holy Name of the Lord. These transformations would be there which would be expressions of My bhava- My emotions.
“ Prema-dhana vina vyartha daridra jivana” (CC Antya 20.37)- Lord said without prema dhana, the life is just daridra. Just being a pauper like a bankrupt, no prema dhana- “amito kangal krsna krsna boli” (Ohe Vaisnava Thakur, Saranagati, verse 4). Narottama Dasa Thakur also had expressed that notion or emotion. Amito kangal – I am just pauper, I’m just a penniless, “krsna krsna boli dhai tava pache pache” – I am just running after You, oh sadhu, oh vaisnava.

“Krsna se tomara, krsna dite paro tomara sakati ache” (Ohe Vaisnava Thakura, saranagati, verse 4, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur).

And I know you have Krsna which is all the wealth. I am pauper, I am bankrupt, I am penniless and you have that Krsna and that is real wealth. So, that’s why I am running after you hoping that you would give Krsna to me also, share that Krsna or you will give me “Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare”. Now, realizing that this is wealth, this Holy Name is a wealth and this is non different from the Lord, this is something we need to realize more and more in order to embrace this chanting and stick to our Japa. We are acquiring wealth because chanting is wealth, dhana. And Lord said “prema dhana vina vyartha daridra jivana”.

“yugayitam nimeshena cakshusha pravrishayitam
sunyayitam jagat sarvam govinda-virahena me”
(Sri Siksastaka, verse 7).

So, now this is Bhava Bhakti level, one begins feeling separation from the Lord. As one gets closer then, if he’s more, cannot tolerate the separation, even moment’s separation. Because we have been separated for long, long time and nothing happened to us, we’re fine, we don’t need, we don’t need Him. We are not missing the Lord, nothing. But, Bhaktivinoda Thakur says ..

“nama bina kichu nahiko aro, cauda-bhuvana-majhe” (Aronodaya-kirtana, Gitavali, verse 8)

My dear soul , you’re a fool? There is nothing better to be had than the Holy Name of the Lord! That’s the best thing, there is nothing else! So, the living entities, abandoning that Lord and His Name, goes for everything else, and then, as observed, they miss that Lord. But, as one takes to the process, finally takes to the process of Krishna consciousness and chanting and as one gets closer and closer and closer, then, he begins missing his Lord more and more. Although he is closer, he is missing Him more and more. One time he was at a greater distance, he did not miss Him at all. He did not even remember Him. But, now it becomes intolerable. “Sunyayitam jagat sarvam”- This whole world is vacant. In the words of Srila Prabhupada, that one (1) is important, otherwise one zero, you add another zero. If there is no one (1), then what’s the value of one zero or so many zeroes? All those many zeroes is equal to one “big” zero. And what is the shape of the world? It’s also round like a zero. Whole universe is like a big zero and that’s what Bhaktivinoda Thakur is sharing there. “ nam bina kichu nahiko aro, cauda-bhuvana”- All the fourteen planetary system, without the Holy Name, they are just nothing. Which is zero there is nothing inside, of any value- sunyayitam. And then, when you are that close, then you’re getting there, you’re getting there and then, you get there. And that is Prayojana now expressed by Mahaprabhu in His own words. What is it?

“asliahya va pada-ratam pinasthu mam adarsanan marma-hatam-hatamkarotu va
yatha tathava vidadhatu lampato mat-prana-nathas tu sa eva naparah (Sri Siksastaka, verse 8)

So, this is culmination, you know when, first of all we hav been saying this as a comment on this verse that when Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu uttered this verses, He is no more Krsna, but He has taken the mood of Radharani. So, this eighth verse is Radharani speaking. But, that Radharani is here Gauranga Mahaprabhu. He has appeared, there is a confidential reason why Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu appeared. He wants to experience emotions of Radha. Or feeling or love for Radha or He want to understand Radha. And here, as he says this statement, this eighth Siksastaka this is it. He is Radha, Sri Krsna Caitanya Radha-Krsna nahe anya.

So, this is Radharan’s part, Radha speaking. Although sounds like some devotee speaking as we were going through the Siksastaka. Or Lord is playing ok, Lord is playing a role of a devotee and speaking. But, here which devotee is speaking this astaka? This is Radharani devotee, She is a Bhaktin. Bhaktin Radharani, Bhakta or Bhaktin Radharani speaking. There is nothing higher than this. So, “aslishya va paa-ratam pinasthu mam”- You may do anything and everything. Yes! You like, you are free to do. Aslishya means You may embrace Me, Aslishya va meaning ‘aur’ aslishyava pada-ratam pinasthu mam. You may crush Me under your feet till I become a powder. I become like a non-existent – pinasthu mam. Aslishya va, one thing – You may embrace Me or pada-ratam pinasthu mam. Yatha tatha va vidadhatulampato – or You may do yatha, tatha – this way, that way. You are lampata. This is You, I know You. You are wicked, You are this, You are that. You are lampata. But, regardless of any way You deal with me, one thing for sure is “prana-nathas tu sa eva naparah”- There is no other natha for me other than “You” as My natha. You are prana-natha, You are free to deal with me any way You like. You embrace Me, You kick Me, crush Me under Your Feet for You are My prana-natha. Let Krsna tightly embrace this maid servant who has fallen at Your Lotus feet or let Him trample me or break my heart by never being visible to me. He is a debauchee after all and can do whatever he likes. But, He is still no one other than worshipable Lord of My heart. Ok, so, I think on that note we’ll take a break now (laughter).

Vishnuduttas arrive to save Ajamila

Venue: ISKCON Nagpur
Date: 16th June 2015
Day 1 of Bhagvat Katha

Sukadev Goswami described, in total, there are twenty eight hells. It has been described in detail in
the fifth canto. King Pariksit has listened to it very attentively.
“Nanogra-yatanan neyat tan me vyakhyatum arhasi” (SB 6.1.6).

So, when King Pariksit (listened) to the description of those hells and to the conditions of suffering
in the hells, nana (varied) types of and ugra (terrible) conditions of suffering. So, then king
Pariksit, who is a devotee, a Vaisnav, becomes para-dukha-dukhi. Para-dukha? – dukhi. Para-duhka.
Para-dhukah-dukhi. On listening to this description, which is very frightful and which gives goose
bumps, He became aggrieved others’ sorrow. “Is there any such solution through which people would
never have to go to hell?” The same idea as ‘prevention is better that cure.’ If it be avoided, its
better.

So, explain me about such a solution, tell me about such interpretations and anecdotes. Give me a
solution so that… adho gacchanti tamasah (BG 14.18), the Lord said, urdhvam gacchanti – there are those who go upwards, madhye tisthanti rajasah… adho gacchanti – there are those who go downwards too, tamasah. So, king Pariksit has asked for a solution. Is there any solution? The question is perfect and there is that perfect answer also to this question. – Purna-prasna – purna-uttara. And the question is related to that in which there is everybody’s welfare. So, such a question has been welcomed and Sukadeva Goswami.

“na ced ihaivapacitim yathamhasah krtasya mana-ukta-panibhih” (SB 6.1.7
)

So, Sukadeva Goswami said people will definitely commit sin. And in what ways? It’s called
“kayena manasa vacasa” (SB 4.8.59). kayena – sin is committed physically, mentally kayena manasa, vaca – and verbally. That’s what is called mana-ukta-panibhih. So, one has to repent. By repentance, one is freed from reaping the fruit, result of that sin. That is why one should repent.

“dhruvam sa vai pretya narakam upaiti ye kirtita me bhavatas tigma-yatanah (SB 6.1.7)

So, people will definitely have to go, narakan, narakan upaiti. So, activities performed under the
influence of Kama (lust), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), the Lord says in other places, in Gita, that
these are the gateways to hell. Gateways / portals of hell, Kama- kamandha, then, krodhandha, then,
lobhandha. When one is blinded by these, blinded by lust, blinded or illusioned by anger and greed.
So, these are activities those that take one to the doorstep of hell. Narakan upaiti, dhruvam.
Undoubtedly, no one can stop that. Naraka- Hell. Hell is a place. In this universe, there is hell or
heaven is also there and in the middle there is mrtyu loka and beneath lies patala loka. Naraka loka
is also existent. People say, inexperienced people say, even great swamis often say that there exist
no other separate planets such as hell and heaven and hell is here, on earth itself or some heavenly
pleasures are fond here itself. People call Kashmir as ‘Nandana-vana’ Or America- “Mora ei
abhilasha, AMERICA dese dio vasa”- (Guru Maharaj and audience laughing), such people. Hey Tulasi
Maharani, please bestow such mercy that I get my visa, so that I can go and settle in America, so that
I can get green card from them.

So, heaven, America, the heavenly planet. Such is some people’s misconception. But otherwise, there
exists such a place called Svarga, there exists a place called narak, there exixts also this mrtyu loka
in the middle. In one universe. Papa-niskrtau yateta (SB 6.1.8). So, we should try. We should make
attempts to repent before bearing the result. tasmat pura eva asu iha. Very quickly. As quick as we
can repent. pascatap – prayascit. Pascatap. Oh! I made a mistake. I committed a sin. To grieve, to
be sad and to do some procedures, it’s called prayascit, so that one will not have to bear the
consequences that activity. So, such an activity must be done immediately. The quicker one does it,
the better it is. We should accept that we committed a sin. The Christian people go to the church to
tell, to confess to the farther of the church that we committed some sin, some offence. Then,
atonement, that should be done what solution is there, how can we be freed? This is ongoing. Every
Sunday they will go and queue up and tell everything to the pope or the priest whatever mistakes were
committed, whatever sins were committed and then, you tell about some repentance, what repentance? So, in our religion too… in the Vedas there is a very large section, Karma Kanda section. Or there are the religious scriptures. ‘The Manu-Smrti’ is also there. In that you’ll get a long list – this repentance for that sin, that repentance for this sin… so, one should do so. Sukadeva Goswami has mentioned about this practice. “Dosasya drstva guru-laghavam” so, how much sin? Guru sin. Guru meaning grave sin. Some heavy sin or some light/small sin. So, according to that, repentance also has to be in accordance to that. As it is being said bhisak cikitseta rujam nidanavit (SB 6.1.8).

When you go to the doctor – cikitsak, then the inexperienced gives test, aaahhhhh. So, diagnosis is done.
And then, there are all these illnesses. Laghu or guru, according to that, OH, this is a headache, so
take aspirin, go! If it is a case of brain hemorrhage, get admitted into I.C.U. Guru- it’s a very
serious matter, take bed rest, you stay here only, get admitted.

So, Sukadeva Goswami is saying, likewise, repentance also has to be according to the lightness or
seriousness of the sin. The time King Pariksit listened to this, then only Sukadeva Goswami should not
have told the solution. But, it’s already said now, our acaryas have commented on that and Prabhupada
also wrote in the purport king Pariksit is being tested. Let me see, I tell him this is the solution. So, let me see what the response of my disciple, King Pariksit, is. How much he learnt and understood about Bhakti. So, king Pariksit immediately spoke thus:

“Drsta-srutabhyam yat papam, janam apy atamano
hitam karoti bhuyo vivasah prayascitam atho katham (SB 6.1.9)

No, no, no! This repentance is useless. You explained repentance to be the solution. However, repentance is not the solution. This is a patchwork. He meant to say it is not the permanent solution. “ Drsta-srutabhyam” I heard that by doing such and such sins, on gets such and such results. For theft, one has to go to jail. “Live life king size” – smoke our brand’s cigarette, then? – Cancer hospital this way. In that direction, is cancer hospital. I heard so, or even read it on cigarette packets – “can cause cancer”. So, drsta-srutabhyam, heard also and have seen too. The scriptures or sages have said no, no, don’t do this, don’t do, don’t do. Even after knowing it, heard, seen
and even got to know something. Even then, people keep doing such activities in which lie their
own harm. Karoti bhuyah vivasah – being compelled.

“Anicchann api varsneya, balad iva niyojitah atha kena prayukto yam papam carati purusah” (BG 3.36).

The same thing Arjuna asked Krsna. He asked to Krsna, I know that one should not commit sins as such, aniccham api, aniccham api… baladiva – some forcibly, papam carati – someon makes one do sins. So, what is that? Who is that? We are compelled to commit sins. Which is that energy? Who is that person? So, king Pariksit is also saying that those who repent, even after repenting, punah, they will again do sinful activities. Sinned and then repented, so, the lure of doing sin, lure of sinful activities.

“Papachi vasana nako dauu dola tyahuna andhada baracha me” (Abhanga, Saint Tukaram).

Tukaram Maharaj has said, papachi vasana- the tendency of committing sins does not go. Committed a sin then repented. So, one will not have to bear the consequences of that sin. Yet, one will again commit sins as the lure or propensity of sin, the seed of sin is already sowed. We do some activities, the act of sin we do but it is temporary. The activity is temporary, that activity is not eternal, it is over. But, what’s left? The propensity of sin, the seed of sin sowed by the sinner. The propensity for committing sin, the desire for committing sin remains, It stays back.

So, “kvacin nivartate bhadrat, kvacic carati tat punah” (SB 6.1.10) so, this is useless, said king Pariksit. Committed some sins for some time, then again, some repentance. One got free from the fruits, whichever one had to reap for that sin, but, punah- again sin is committed. So, like that such pursuance, again sin and repentance, again sin and repentance. King Pariksit referred to it as kunjara saucavt. This kunjara, meaning elephant.
The elephant is famous for its bathing. How does it bathe? He does bathe and then… in some lake or river. We got an elephant in our padayatra. It’s with us for several years and we walked behind it in the padayatras. The elephant had the leadership of our padayatra (jokingly). Elephant in the front, I saw too, he would go in the water and would bathe to its heart content. We used to keep watching that scene, the elephant’s bath, how it used to spray water on itself, here and there, from the top with the use of its trunk. We used to take photos of it too. However, after sometimes, when it would come ashore, it would, again with its, throw dust and mud on itself. It just took bath, came ashore and again became dirty, made itself dirty, useless.

“atho partha manye kunjara-saucavat” (SB 6.1.10)

I think that all this is similar to an elephant’s bath, this repentance that you talked about.
So, Sukadeva Goswami surely is happy by this observation of His disciple, king Pariksit.

“Karmana karma-nirharo, na hy atyantika isyate
avidvad-adhikaritvat prayascittam vimarsanam”
(SB 6.1.11)

So, one action, one act of sin one did, then, to get free from it, one did a second action, the act of repentance. So, nirharo, karma-nirharona, so the seed of sin sowed by the act of sin or the propensity or tendency for sin produced by the act of sin has not been able to be eradicated by repentance. So, Sukadeva Goswami is yet, accepting its right well said. Well done, good boy, good student. You’re good.

Now, He is talking about a second type of repentance too. He is telling him prayascitam vimarsanam.
He said so – After repentance, that sinful person has, yet, not been free from his or her ignorance.
He remained ignorant, even before he was ignorant, even after that, his ignorance did not dissipate. So, what should one do? Prayasittam vimarsanam. One should acquire knowledge. One should acquire tatva-jnana. So the first type of repentance is referred to as karma-kanda. And now the repentance we are talking about is also another type of kanda. What’s that? – jnana kanda. Karma kanda, jnana kanda, kevala visera bhanda (Prema Bhakti Candrika). That is what vaisnavas, Gaudiya vaisnavas understand. Thtkarma-kanda… So, most religious activities that usually take place, the people: “say with pride!” what? “we are Hindus!” say proudly! So, the Hindus are busy in such actions, in karma-kanda. And then, some of them, jnana kanda

“Bhukti-mukti-siddhi-kami – sakali asanta’ (CC Madhya 19.14
9).

So, the desire for bhukti- material enjoyment is the desire of karma-kandis. Desire for material enjoyment. Those in jnana-kanda aremukti-kami. They desire mukti – liberation. But then, both are kami, full of desires, Kama, kami. So, one who is full of desires (kama) is kami, Kama, kami. Kevala visera bhanda. It’s nothing but a pot of poison.

“Tapasa brahmacaryena-brahmacaryena samena ca damena
ca tyagena satya-saucabhyam yamena niyamena va” (SB 6.1.13).
So, people acting under jnana kanda are illusioned here. Someone may think that this is nice,
Tapasa, it’s good if he is a tapasvi- hermit, He is a religious person. However, not all hermits are
religious or Krsna conscious people. He is definitely a hermit, but, there is no God consciousness or
sentiment of God in him. There is no sentiment of devotional service. (yaha bhakti ke bhava ka
abhava hi hain). He is doing penances though, who was such a hermit? Hiranyakasipu did this kind of
penance. He did such a penance that even demigods got frightened by the impact of the penance, such an impact.
But, that penance was not meant for attaining God or for God realization. “I want to be immortal!”
“Make me immortal!” after becoming immortal what am I going to do? I am going to trouble everybody.
“Isvaro ham aham bhogi siddho ham balavan sukhi” (BG16.14). I’ll keep doing that so then, make me
immortal. So in fact, penance has to be transcendental penance or it has to be spiritual penance. All
activities should be spiritual, its purpose is
“yat karosi yad asnasi yai juhosi dadasi yat yat tapasyasi kaunteya tat kurusya mad-arpanam” (BG 9.27).
Offer me! Offer the penance to me, do it for attaining me. Get up early in the morning, that is
penance. Go to attend katha-lecture despite rainfall, this is also penance. To sit near the stove and
cook even during summer, that is penance. In fact, if we perform these activities for the Lord’s sake,
if we cook and offer or feed the Lord so,

“tapo divyam putraka yena sattvam suddhayed yasmad brahma-saukhyam tv anantam” (SB 5.5.1).
Lord Rsabhadeva says to His sons: “do penance! Do penance! Do penance!” But, what kind of penance?
Transcendental penance. Lord Brahma too, the first activity that Lord Brahma did before creating the
Universe. He wasn’t able to figure out from where He was born. I came into existence, but, what
should I do? If we just continue with interpretation, we won’t move further. So, He started to find
out. He wanted to know, he was inquisitive. Then, He heard two word, first was ‘ta’ and the second
was ‘pa.’ When He uttered them together, then, “aahhh!” ‘Tapa’ – penance. I have to do penance, have
to do penance. So, He did penance, he did transcendental penance. So, at the end of the penance, the
Lord appeared. He met with the Lord, they even shook hands. Then, the Lord “divya jnana hrdaya
prakasito” (Guru Vandana, text 3), filled His heart with transcendental knowledge. So, transcendental
penance, transcendental penance.

So who doesn’t do penance in the world? Every person, different kinds of uncomfort, samena ca damena ca tyagena, tyagena- sacrifice. They were also tyagi – hermit or dani – generous. Jarasanda was very generous, he was a demon, but was generous. Yet, he wasn’t generous to Krishna. He wasn’t offering to Krsna. So, demons can also be generous. Demons can also be hermits. Demons too can be priests. Ravana was a great priest. He was a great intellectual. So, propensity for such a generosity or
penance or even knowledge which are not meant to serve the Lord, which do not serve on the devotional service of the Lord.
“jnana-karmady anarvrtam, anukulyena krsnanu-silanam bhaktir uttama”

Bhaktir uttama – bhakti is topmost, Bhakti is topmost. What is that uttama bhakti? – jnana karmady-
anavrtam. Jnana and karma. Transcending karma kanda and jnana kanda. “Anukulyena krsnanu-silanam” Anukula – favourable. Kamsa, He used to think too, in Mathura. Kamsa also , for instance, whenever He would eat something and he would see any leaf in that food then on seeing that he would remember the Lord in yellow robes. Hey! Bring the knife. Perhaps He is appearing in my plate (laughter). So, he used to remember but, thought that whenever he will show up what will I do? – beat Him up. I’ll kill Him. So, this kind of remembrance is not appropriate, it’s inappropriate.

“Ksipanty agham mahad api” (SB 6.1.14) Sukadeva Goswami said repentance is compared to kunjara-
saucavat, with the elephant’s bath. And He is describing this as venu-gulmam ivanalah. The trees and
plants in the forest, bamboos too are there. When they catch fire, the leaves get burnt to ashes.
Yet, when it will rain, the bamboo will again grow. The essence, its root was there in the earth. The
plant just got burnt a bit from outside or it went through some trimming or some cutting. Like in
parks they give them some shape, some form. Of an elephant or a peacock but, they definitely grow up
again. Or the farmers, sugar cane planters, they got the sugarcane cut and sent it to the factory too
already. So then, they give the plant water then, again they start growing. The root remain intact.
So, there repentances found within karma kanda and jnana kanda, they do not destroy the sins from the
root or they do not destroy the root cause of sins.

“Kecit kevalaya bhaktya vasudeva-parayanah” (SB 6.1.15).
So, Sukadeva Gowsvami is saying there is only one solution,
“Krsna-bhakta-niskama, ataeva santa” (CC Madhya 19.149).
The other party is not peaceful all are kami, “bhukti kami, mukti kami, siddhi kami”. The baba
(saint) who is constantly after them, he even does miracles. On seeing miracles (chamatkara) we do
namaskara to him. He who give ashes, they are known as siddhi kami. Such
siddhi saints are always coming up in our country with illustrious names. 100 to 150 years ago
Illustrious saints came up and many Hindus followed them. So, siddhi kami, everybody is kami but,
“krsna-bhakta- niskama ataeva santa” the devotee of krsna does bhakti or he listens to Srimad
Bhagavat. These Devi puranas, prayers to Demigods within karma kanda, so many fire sacrifices, all
these come under repentance. So, siva-dam, the hearing of Srimad Bhagavat is siva-dam and then, what? “tapa-traya-unmulanam” (CCMadhya 24.100) tapa-traya, causes of miseries. There are three of them, Adidaivik, adibhautik, adhyatmik. What do we call that? – tapa traya-unmulanam- “unmulanam” – this Srimad Bhagavat, it eradicates them from their very root, foundation, base. So, that’s why

“srnvatam sva-kathah krsnah punya sarva-kirtanah
hrdy antah stho hy abhadrani, vidhunoti suhrt sadam” (SB 1.2.17).

It has been mentioned in Srimad Bhagavatam itself – by hearing Srimad Bhagavatm, there are other
scriptures too. There is some karma kanda, this purana, that purana. Big body of knowledge. Very big
sangrah grantha, scriptures, various scriptures. But, what happens by listening to Srimad Bhagavatam?
“Hrdy antaha stho hy abhadrani, vidhunoti suhrt sadam” this katha reaches our “hrdy antah stho” -it
goes deep in our heart and consciousness and this Srimad Bhagavata katha, what does it do? Vidhunoti-
it cleanses all the inauspiciousness, abhadra or all the lure and tendency for sinning.
“Ceto darpana marjana” (Sri Siksastaka, verse 1) wherever there is the stain of kama, lusty desires,
the seed of sin, so this, “jnanagnih sarva kamani bhasma-sat kurute tatha” (BG 4.37) knowledge about
bhakti. Vasudevah sarvam iti- that kind of knowledge. What kind of knowledge? “vasudevah sarvam.”
Vasudeva is everything. Those who know this are knowledgeable, this is knowledge. Knowledgeable people. ‘Mam prapadyante’– come under my shelter. And what do I do when such a person comes to me? The Lord says – ‘mam ekam saranam vraja’ and then? – ‘aham tva, sarva papebhyo moksayisyami’- I will liberate you. The consequence of your sin that you had to definitely bear, I will liberate you from that too. And also, free you from the lure, the propensity, the plan, the strategy to again commit sins. “Aham tvam sarva papebhyo mksayisyami ma sucah” Do not fear, just surrender unto me. So, this is thus proved that the topmost repentance has to be done also. So, what is the topmost repentance? Devotional services or activities (Bhakti). Do bhakti! This is not karma kanda neither jnana kanda.

“kecit kevalaya bhaktya vasudeva- parayanah
agham dhunvantikartsyena nirharam iva bhaskarah (SB 6.1.15).
So, when there is fog during winter, dhuka we call it in Marathi, and when the sun rises, bhaskarah –
the sun defeats or clears the fog with its rays. It spreads light everywhere. Likewise, the actions
of devotional service, by becoming vasudeva-parayanah, then aghamdhunvanti kartsyea. It dhunvanti –
cleans even the thoughts of committing sins or even the sinful thoughts. So, we find this principle of
the Bhagavat about which we have already mentioned a little bit at many other places too.
“Na tatha hy aghavan rajan puyeta tapa-adibhih
yatha krsnarpita-pranas tat-purusa-nivesaya (SB 6.1.16).
So, Sukadeva Goswami is again saying. Earlier He said yes, one should do penance, give charity and
perform religious activities ,should acquire knowledge – ‘yamena niyamena, tyagena’ but… yes, this
will do some purification. But, na…puyeta – there won’t be much purification through the repentance
done in karma kanda or jnana kanda. Yatha krsnarpita-pranas tat-purusa-nisevaya. How much can we be
free, be purified? The extent to which one is purified by, first of all, doing krsnarpita krtya – by
either performing activities of devotional service for Krsna or by serving those personalities, those
mahabhagavatas who render devotional service unto Krsna or by associating with them, that is, by doing
bhakti, that extent of purification cannot be achieved by performance of any other religious
activities.

So,nityam bhagavata-sevaya, bhagavaty uttama sloke bhaktir bhavati naisthiki (SB 1.2.18) What will
happen when we will listen to Bhagavat? – There, Prabhupada says that there are two kinds of Bhagavat. Scripture bhagavat and person bhagavat. So nityam bhagavata sevaya meaning service unto both! Service of Bhagavat, Mahabhagavat Srila Prabhupada ki…Jai! Service to Prabhupada, to Prabhupada’s movement.
So, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur Mahasaya ki…Jai!

Today is the Disappearance Day Celebration of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura. So his point of view, his
visions, he started doing quite some activities or projects. The acaryas launched projects, but, it’s
not necessary that these projects meet their objectives during the very lifetimes of those acaryas
themselves. You must be willing to build a house. The aim of your life it is. We shall own a house.
Our own home. Own a motorcycle, something like that. All these get accomplished to some extent and a
little remain yet unaccomplished.
Radha-Gopinatha Ki… Jai!

However, the endeavor of the acaryas, they start them and then their endeavor or project is further
accomplished through or within the parampara, the disciplic succession. Next acarya, next group of
devotees, of vaisnavas, then next, like that. So, Bhaktivinoda Thakur launched many of ISKCON’s
(International Society for Krishna Consciousness’) projects too. He also inaugurated the parikrama,
Nava-dvipa Mandala parikrama. He also predicted that in the future, foreigners will come. They will
come from Germany or America and along with the Bengali or Indian devotees, they will? – “Jaya
Sacinandana, Jaya Sacinandana, Jaya Sacinandana, Jaya Sacinandana, Jaya Sacinandana Gaura Hari…”
(Vaisnava song-Guru Maharaj and audience singing together).
So, further then, Bhaktisiddhanta also did proceedings, then, came Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila
Prabhupada. Nationals and foreigners came together and then, started saying and singing Jaya
Sacinandana everywhere, throughout the whole of India. The arati that we sing, “jayo, jaya gaura
cander” (GM singing), this and so many, hundreds of other songs were written by Srila Bhaktivinoda
Thakur. Saranagati and so on. So the singing of this, listening to it and
congregationally chanting it is also rendering service unto His words only, It’s his service only.
These, Bhakti-vrksas, Bhakti-vrksas, namahattas and then Bhakti-vrksas, all these plans, these
hypothesizes, these concepts are those of Bhaktivinoda Thakur only. Emphasis is being laid on it here
at Nagpur. So, it is service unto Bhaktivinoda Thakur. So, like that, nityam bhagavata sevaya. So
the listening of Bhagavat, is service unto the Lord, service unto vaisnavas, sevice unto bhagavatas.
So, krsnarpita-pranas tat-purusa-nisevaya by doing so, puyeta – purification takes place.

“ Sadricino hy aham loke pantah ksemo kuto- bhayah
susilah sadhavo yatra Narayana-parayanah (SB 6.1.17)
.

So, he inaugurated, to what extent bhakti is chief. He told about karma yoga also, about dhyana yoga
and then what did the Lord say?

“Yoginam api sarvesam mad-gatenantar-atmana
sraddhavan bhajate yo mam sa me yukta-tamo matah” (BG 6.47)
.
So, among all the yogis, the bhakti yogi is the topmost, said the Lord in the end of the 6th chapter if
Gita. Yoga day is coming soon (laughter). Preparations are in and awareness is being created. So, do
some preaching. Preach about yoga, about ‘Bhakti-yoga’ or ‘Japa-yoga!’ Or preaching of japa-yajna.
Otherwise, the same thing, some karma kanda, jnana kanda thing or something does take place with yoga practice. However, Sukadev Goswami is saying that bhakti-yoga is the topmost. Susilah – the saints, who are virtuous, Narayana-parayanah. They follow the bhakti ‘pantha’ – path only. In marathi they use the word often, pantha, mahanubhava pantha. Path in English, they call it path in America (GM saying it in American accent), “path” (laughter). So, this word originated from the word ‘patha.’ From patha came path. Three, where from came the word three? – ‘Trin, trin. Trin is found in Sanskrit. Thus came three. Like that, many other words came from Sanskrit which is the mother or generator of all other languages.

So, “prayascittani cirnani Narayana-paranmukham” so, Sukadeva Goswami is again saying that is often
seen that the persons who adhere by the repentances of this world, they vimukha Narayana-paranmukham. Some are Narayana-parayanah – taken the path of devotional service, who are susilah sadhavah, narayanah-parayanah. But, those who do other types of repentances, the karma kandis, jnana kandis, they are Narayana-paranmukham, they are not compliant with Narayana. That is why “na nispunati rajendra sura-kumbham ivapagah” So, he is giving an example: the bottle of liquor (GM laughs), if you try to purify it with the water of whichever river, na nispunanti, it will not get purified.

Likewise, do whatever repentance you wish to, that won’t purify the person. And now, He is presenting
this same statement in form of a principle – “sakan manah krsna-padaravindayor nivesitam tad-guna-ragi yair iha” (SB6.1.19) if someone just does krsna-padaravinda, krsna-caranaravinda (surrender completely unto the two Lotus Feet of krsna) which is like honey. The sweetness of the name of Krsna, of His qualities, His pastimes, unto them whoever surrendered, whoever came under the shelter of Krsna, that person
“na te yamam pasa-bhrtas ca tad-bhatan svapne pi pasyanti cirna-niskrtah” So, he who is a devotee of
krsna and who constantly drinks the nectar of Krsna, of the Holy Name.
“Hare krsna Hare Krsna Krsna krsna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare”

“padodakam pitva, punar janma na vidyate” drinks the caranamrta (water that bathe His Lotus feet) of His Lotus Feet then, punar janma na vidyate and one will develop bhakti too. So, those practicing such
bhakti, those who are tad-guna ragi, they will not receive the sight or will not have to see the
‘Yamadutas’, the order carriers of Yamaraja, even in their dreams. The yamadutas will stay away from
them. With such devotees who are constantly krsna guna-ragi, constantly attached to the qualities, the
name, fame and paraphernalia of Krsna, who are Narayana-parayanah or those who are the practitioners of
“kirtaniyah sada-harih –svapne hi na pasyanti, pasa-bhrtas ca tad-bhatan”

So, yamadutas who constantly keep what in their hands? They keep pasa, they keep ropes. On finding
a sinner who is on his deathbed or who is to die soon, they keep their ropes ready and then they drag
or pull that person out if his body and take him with them. So, they are ever-ready. So, Sukadeva
Goswami says, there is also a case an example of this. You are telling right though that he who is
attached to krsna, tad anuragi, guna-ragi, he does not come across yamadutas even in his dreams. Not
even in dreams, then, what to say about when they are awake. So, Sukadeva Gswami says yes, yes, I am
remembering a primitive historical event. I am going to narrate that. Are you ready?
“Dutanam visnu-yamayoh samvadas tam nibodha me” (SB 6.1.20). And during that primitive history, you
will listen to the conversation between yamadutas and Yamaraja himself. So, then, you will understand
what I just said. That even in dreams neither Yama nor Yamadutas will come. So, saying thus,
“kanyakubje dvijah kascid dasi-patir ajamilah”. So, He is talking about some kanyakubja that now or
even in the scriptures is known as Kanauj. And the modern Kanpur in U.P (Uttar Pradesh), Kanpur it is
this kanyakubja itself where lived Ajamila.

How was Ajamila? – “dasi-patir ajamilah” Dasi-pati meaning, or vaisha-pati – husband of a low class
woman or a prostitute, Ajamila. Once he lived– his name was Ajamila. And all his virtuousness or
righteousness got destroyed. Because of whom? “Dasyah samsarga-dusitah” by keeping association of
that low class, prostitute woman. So, his condition became deplorable. So, what he used to do? He
used by force take money from people.

‘Bibhrat kutumbam’ (SB 6.1.22)– yena kena prakarena, somehow or other to foster or sustain his
kutumbha, his family. By hook or by crook, Yena kena prakarena. So, one among those ways was that he
used to catch hold of someone and tie him up, arrest him. Then, he searches that person’s pockets,
opens that person’s carry bag and peep in and whatever he finds, he loots. Kaitavaih – then, he would
gamble, he was a very cunning gambler. He would very easily play cards. Playing cards- Time pass, So
many people spend so much time gambling in trains. Goa is a major gambling centre. So don’t go to
Goa. We go often as we did not know. So, cauryair – and he used to steal, used to pick pocket. He used to commit thefts through various ways. Garhitam vrtim asthitah – these types of garhit, condemned activities. And in this way, he used to keep troubling everybody. Such a person he was. Like Jagai, Madai. And even nowadays you can find these kind of people. Everywhere you will find people who do such activities. Kalir cela – followers of Kali.
“Evam nivasatas tasya lalayanasya ta-sutan” (SB 6.1.23). So, with money earned from such activities,
as he was nurturing his sons and that low class woman, lots of days, months and years went by.
“Ayur harat vaipumsam udyam astam ca yann asan” (SB 2.3.17).

ayur harati, so what does the sun do? It snatches, takes away, the sun rose and then set and thus,
took away the whole day of today. Took away everyone’s time. Ayur harati vaipumsam. Yet, the sun
does not snatch the time of only those who are doing what? Listening to Srimad Bhagavat. Those who
listen to Srimad Bhagavat and those who do bhakti, they become kalatita. They transgress kala (time).
They are not affected by the effects of kala. So, as for Ajamila, lots of his time got over. How many
years? Asthasity- he turned eighty-eight. He became an eighty-eight years old man. And by that age,
he even got ten children too. At the age of eighty-eight he had a new born child. That’s nothing!
Recently, somewhere in the west (western country), a wedding ceremony took place. No! No, he was a
hundred and three years old (laughter). And to who he got married, she was ninety-four years old.
They broke the record. So, they brought him on a wheelchair (laughter). So now their life has
started. Affair or ya.., and it came into news that prior to the wedding, they had seven children
already. So, this is… My disciple, Ajaya-vijaya prabhu. So, he was a Brahmacari and once, he
received his father’s wedding card (laughter). So, he was summoning hi Brahmacari son “come, I am
going to get married.” (Laughter). Please attend my marriage. So, this, Ajamila, parampara dasi pati
ajamila. So by chance, balo narayano namah (SB 6.1.24), he named his youngest son as what? He named
him ‘Narayana.’

It is due to the result of some unknown good deed that he did not name him ‘Tinku, Chinku.’
(Laughter). Pintu is good? (laughter). These names are meaningless. Just some name. So “pitros ca
dayito bhrsam” and he was very dear to his parents, the low class woman and Ajamila. A small child
is normally dear to everyone or to parents. So, they were no exception. So, they loved Narayana a lot. And lie that, Sukadeva Goswami says “baddhah-hrdayas tasmin arbhake” (SB6.1.25). So, hrdaya-granthi. They got attached, tied up got into bondage. The pasa – ropes of affection or attachment, what kind of ropes? Sneha-pasa we call it. Sneha-pasa or granthi. Meaning knot. A knot is formed or tied up in the heart. Gatha-bandhana. So, in course of loving that child, in course of taking care of him.., and how old? – Kala-bhasini. He talked in a broken language.
So, on listening to that broken language.., “Lama”. “Say ‘Rama’ son.” So, the child would say ‘Lama.”
Children cannot say Rama, they cannot pronounce ‘ra’ (laughter) ‘Lama.’ Perhaps he did not say Rama
as such. So, like that, when he would make him say something, he would be very happy on listening to
his broken language. And as we listen to all this, we have to bear in mind, realize that we are no different too. We will, more or less find similarities between Ajamila’s and our lives. We should
understand this word, learn this word. Vasibhuta, vasa, kama-vasa. Kama-vasa. krodha-vasa. Meaning
anger takes charge of or takes hold of us. We do not control lust (material desires) or anger.
Instead, lust anger and greed control us, Kama-vasa, krodha-vasa. So, it compels to do such things
and then, we do such things.

“ Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah ahankara- vimudhatma karta Aham” (BG 3.27).
Sattva-guna (goodness) and Rajo-guna (passion), Tamo-guna (ignorance). So, it’s the play, the ploy of these three modes of material nature. These three modes make the whole world dance to their tunes “mayadhaksena prakrtih suyate sa- caracarm” (BG 9.10), the Lord says – under my direction and of these three modes separately. However “ahankara-vimudhatma” vimudha – bewildered, what does he think? – kartaham. “I do.” And the Lord says no, no, you are not the doer. Gunaih karmani sarvasah. The gunas, modes of material nature are the doers. The mode of goodness, the mode of passion and the mode of ignorance make you act. So, whenever, either while eating or while drinking something, he calls him. Hey, come here Narayana, come here. Eat what? Eat mutton and rice also (laughter) or come Narayana, eat chicken noodles (laughter).

Narayana, come here, you will get vitamins by eating eggs, the ‘scriptures’ and the dieticians of
present days also say that. So, eat eggs doesn’t matter be it Sunday or Monday, just keep
eating ‘andey’ – eggs (laughter). Who has seen the ‘dandey’ – the hitting rod? What’s the guarantee
that we will be punished? (Laughter). They keep saying certain things like that. Who has seen hell?
Bhasmi-bhutaya dehasya kutah puar agamano bhavet (Carvaka Muni, CC Adi 7.119 – purport). The time this body is turned to ashes, then, finished, everything is finished. This re-birth, this result of sins,
there is nothing like that, everything is here. These Hare Krsna people, they say that there exist a
hell separately, “have some fear for that at least” Nah, forget that! (Laughter). Such preaching
this is current topics.

Death is here or the Yamadutas are not very far. He did not realise this thing while he was busy enjoying his lifestyle. He was enjoying. So, he did not even know. Time flies they say. Time flies (Maharaj clapping fingers). When you have fun, time flies. When people live happily, peacefully, time runs like that and we don’t even know it. And when suffering comes, when people are aggrieved, then: “the watch is not working or?” Did the watch stop? Time stands still. People experience that. When they are enjoying time flies. Suffering, time stands still. So, he was enjoying, so-called. This is so-called enjoyment. So, now, after enjoyment, there is suffering too. People do not think like that. Ajamila too wasn’t thinking that way. So, “just do it.” What to do? – Just do it! You think afterwards (Maharaj laughs). So, ‘high living and? – no thinking.’ Just do it!
Forget this ‘simple living, high thinking.’ Not high thinking, high living. And not even simple
Thinking, no thinking.

“ matim cakara tanaye bale narayanahvaye” so, when death came, “Yamadutas aarahe hein!” – Yamadutas are coming- unannounced. There was no announcement, they just showed up. One cannot tell them that “you showed up without taking an appointment. Yamaraja speaking! He thought… Someone was driving a car very fast and was also talking on mobile. So, someone was saying to him, “I want to come see you, want to meet you.” No, no, no, I am very busy. I am busy. Very busy. No, very busy. The car turned over and drove off the cliff and “phir milenge.” – We’ll meet again. So, he was very busy. No time, Bhagavata katha is taking place and he is, uh… We’ll see I am very busy, taken up. So, he also, the poor fellow, he was busy. But, mrtyu-kala upasthite. So, Ajamila’s son was playing nearby. So, he saw the Yamadutas coming towards him. So, how were they? The yamadutas? Pasa-hastams (SB 6.1.28). What was there in their hands? Ropes. So, there was three persons. He saw three persons. Bhrsa ati-darunan, that scene was very horrible. Ortheir appearance was very horrible. They were very scary. Vakra-tundan. Their faces were twisted. Their teeth were showing and urdha-romna and hair like this (standing). When you go abroad you find hair like… (Laughter), cut here (from audience: spike, spike). They even paint/dye it, just as the peacock feathers, similar styles. So, their’s too were urdha-romna. So, all their hair were stood up. And then, he saw that “netum agatan atmanam” They have come to take me away. Look! Look! See the rope in their hands. They are coming straight towards me, I am finished, It’s my end now.

“dure kridanakasaktam putram” (SB 6.1.29). So, his son was playing nearby. So speaking to him in a state of great mental restlessness and being helpless, without no other resort, he called out “Narayana!” so,
given that the utterance of ‘Narayana’ was done on a high tone, so the devotees of Narayana, are normally, very prompt or ever ready so that if someone is on his deathbed somewhere and is uttering the Lord’s name, is remembering the Lord, ‘itna to karna swami, jab prana tana se nikale, Govinda Nama leke, tab prana tana se nikale.’ So, those doing such prayers, they were alredy doing such prayers all life long and now, at the end, the utterance of Govinda’s name, Narayana! Or Govinda! Of Gopinath!
(Aloud) – Hare Krsna Hare krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare! So, they used to keep waiting and so, as soon as the name Narayana got uttered, then, bhatur nama (SB6.1.30). Somebody is calling out the name of our master. These are the Visnudutas.

So, the utterance of the name ‘Narayana’, the Visnudutas heard that. nisamya mriyamanasya, hari-kirtanam. The order
carriers of Lord Visnu heard that Ajamila who uttered ‘hari-kirtanam’, the Holy Name of the Lord or who
has uttered ‘Narayana.’ And then, what happened? – sahasa apatan. They immediately arrived there,
appeared there. And when they came, they saw that these three persons had reached there earlier and
what were they doing? Vikarsatah (SB 6.1.31). They were dragging him away. They had even tied him up
with the rope.

So, his conscience, his life, his soul and the soul is covered by the subtle body. The subtle body, made up of mind, intelligence and ego and inside it, the soul. All that together is known as conscience. This conscience is also known as prana – life. So, antah hrdayat – they had tied it from deep within
his heart and were dragging it away. So, the Visnudutas saw those three persons whom Yamaraja sent, were busy doing such a thing. And as soon as they came and saw that, “Hey! Beware!” . So, when the Yamadutas heard this– who are you? Ke yuyam? “Dharma-rajasya sasanam, pratised-dharah” Who are you to stop or prohibit the ruling jurisdiction of the dharma-raja?

“Kasya va kutaya ayatah” (SB 6.1.33). Whom do you belong to? From where have you come? Kasmad asya nisedhatha – Why are You stopping us? Kim devah? Are You some Demigod? Upadeva ya? Or some sub-demigod? There exists such classifications, devata and upa-devata – Demigaods and Sud-demigods. So, “yuyam kim siddha-sattamah” you are some pure devotee or self-realised persons? Are you? And, meaning, who are you or do you have any idea or something? Who are You to actually stop us. However, they are saying these things that are you some Demigod or some Sub-demigod, a pure devotee, self-realised person, also because they were impressed by the beauty of those Visnudutas. And looking at every beauty or form of the VIsnudutas, sarve Padma palasaksah (SB 6.1.34), just look at Your eyes, You are Padma-locani. Your eyes are like the petals of a Lotus flower. Your yellow, silk robes are
dazzling as lightning. Just as it was lightning today.

“ Kiritinah” – you have worn a crown and even earings. “Lasat-puskara-malinah” – and there is even a garland made of Lotus flowers around Your neck. “aahhh!” The garland is perfumed too, it’s not made of plastic (laughter). They are not plastic flowers. “Sarve ca nutena-vayasah” (SB 6.1.35). And you are young, you are youngsters. “Sarve caru-caturbhujah” – all of you are four-armed. We never saw such a thing before.
“kurvantah svena tejasa “– with Your own effulgence. You did not bring along any torch or light etc. You yourself are effulgent. And by that only, by only your presence, more light has been spread than that of the natural light which was already here. Yes, you are very beautiful and there is no doubt in that. But, being even so beautiful.
“ kim artham dharma-palasya kimkaran nah nisedhatha” (SB 6.1.36). We are the servants of Yamaraja. We are Yamadutas, servitors of Yamaraja. So, why are you stopping us? You are beautiful in appearance. Feels like to click a photo of yours or film a video of Yours, but you are definitely beautiful from everywhere aspect, but your behavior is not that good. Why are you opposing the governance of Dharmaraja? So, on hearing the Yamadutas, the Visnudutas began speaking.

How was their voice? Just as the thunder, have you ever heard the thunder? – Yes! But, that as I heard today, I have perhaps never listened to such a thunder before. It’s our first time, fresh experience. So, it is said here that the voices of the Visnudutas also were like “megha-gambhiraya vaca” (SB 10.58.39) or “megha-nirhradaya gira”- on a high tone, loud and clear, now they will tell their message which you will be able to hear tomorrow. The speech of the Visnudutas. And who is the listener while this conversation is taking place? Ajamila who is hanging in the middle (laughter). Below waistline, he is still inside since that subtle body has a waist and a form too and half of himself is outside. So, in that condition he got the association of even the Yamadutas. They are the order carriers or servants of Yamaraja. So, their association also is sadhu sanga – devotee association.

And then, in the second chapter, you will hear the speech of the Visnudutas and then, in the third chapter you will get to hear Yamaraja’s speech. You will be happy on listening to Yamaraja. The fear for Yamaraja that is there, from whom we are afraid, so, listen to that speech too. You will acquire cleanliness of consciousness and peace of mind. All of that is being said so that we do not have to do what? So that we don’t experience the tortures of hell. Give me such a solution. So, Sukadeva Goswami is telling about the solution itself to king Pariksit here in this anecdote. So, ok, thank you. Hare Krsna! Srila Prabhupada ki…Jai! Radha-Gopinatha ki…Jai!

Qualities and mood of Preacher

Venue: Mayapur
Dated: 4/2/2010

Haribol!!
(Guru Maharaj asking the Bhakti sastri students) You were here yesterday? And what happened? What did we talk about?
Attitude towards living entities ants and elephants and from knowledge comes humility. “kanthasta and hidayasta” don’t keep just to the throat but bring it to the heart and then do not just accumulate that there but assimilate so that there is the transformation ‘yoga sthah kuru karmani’ (B.G 2.48) someone has taken note of, that was one of the concluding statements we made. ‘yogtha sah kuru karmani’ which was Krishna’s advise to Arjuna but is that just for Arjuna? It’s especially for us. Arjuna is already yogi and Bhakta, ‘bhakta si me’ (B.G 4.3) that we want to become devotees, so He is giving us advise, ‘yoga sthah kuru karmani’. So ‘yoga sthah’ that’s being in yoga, established in yoga, established in knowledge, want to talk in the context of ‘what we are doing here’, studying the sastras and acquiring knowledge and we want to become knowledgeable, equipped with knowledge. We could also say ‘yoga sthah kuru karmani’ or ‘ jnana sampanna’ we become ‘jnana sampanna’ like what ‘vidya vinaya sampanna’ (B.G 5.18). Equipped with vidya, vinaya, knowledge and humility, so ‘jnana sampanna’, equipped with the knowledge then you act.

Don’t just walk into the world ignorant but walk into the world on the scene equipped with the knowledge. That’s why the very first stage or phase of life is called ‘vidya vidyarthi dassa’ vidya arjan is the primary focus and function of brahmacari life, ‘brahmacari gurukule vasandato</strong' and then he does acquires knowledge, acquiring knowledge. So you are brahmacaris? Certainly it’s the age to acquire knowledge. In fact, never stop keep acquiring knowledge all lifelong. We should never be wasting one sann-moment, those who wish to acquire knowledge, do not even waste one sann, one moment is the same, ‘avyarthalalatvam’ that’s another technical term. There is a term called sann and kann, kann-dana, so those who wish to become wealthy, they do not afford they should not be wasting not even one kann, one grain, should be only accumulating one grain, two grains, more grains and on. If you waste, how could you be wealthy? How could you be accumulating wealth if you waste one grain, two grains, more grains. So one kann and one sann, kann sann, they are two different word, kann means grain and sann means moment. Do not even waste one moment of your life, acquire knowledge. Your moments, moment after moment, anuksann, sann, anuksann, moment after moment after moment should be invested in acquiring knowledge, realizing knowledge, becoming wise, wisdom. So once we are equipped with the knowledge, then we could act in knowledge and then that action will be proper action then that’s the Bhakti yoga, ‘jnanavan…what does he do? mam prapadyate’.

We do not surrender unto Krishna because lack of knowledge. More knowledge you have, you will surrender more unto Krishna. When we say knowledge, knowledge of what? ‘vedais ca sarvair, aham eva vedyo’ (B.G 15.15) I am to be known. You acquire more knowledge, you know Krishna more and then as you know Krishna more, you feel like, Oh! Such person, I would love to surrender unto Him! I didn’t know He is such a sweet, beautiful, this that kind of person.
So, more we know and from ignoring Krishna comes ignorance; Oh! He is ignorant, ignorant of what? Krishna. Oh! He ignores me, you know, he ignores me, ignores me, I was right there but he just ignored me. You hear sometimes people complaint, he ignores me; he doesn’t acknowledge my presence or doesn’t shake hands, he didn’t even say Hare Krishna to me! (Laughter) just ignores me. From ignoring Krishna one who ignores remains ignorant. So more we hear, more we study, more we discuss Krishna, ‘bodhayantah paras param’ then ‘mat citta mad gata prana’ (B.G 10.9) then that person’s consciousness is stuck to Krishna’s lotus feet. And he is ready to give ‘radha krsna prana mora jugal kishore’ immediately, oh! My life unto such Lord, ‘jivana marane gati arna hi mor’ during my this lifetime or marane or even if after I die, after that, where do I go? ‘gati’, my destination is Radha Krsna.

So, this is the result of knowing Krishna. We don’t care for Krsna and don’t want to surrender unto Him because we don’t know Him. So more we know Him, more we’ll surrender unto Him and ‘sa mahatma sudurlabhah’ such mahatma is rare and then that mahatma will deal with the world appropriately. Actions will be full of knowledge, equipped with knowledge and ‘na mam karmani limpanti na me karma phale sprha’ (B.G 4.14) as is the case with Krishna, I am not attached ‘na karma phale sprha’ no motivation in performing my activities and ‘na mam karmani limphanti’ the activities do not bind me,that’s the case with Krsna. Like father like son; He is father and we are His sons, so the way He acts, we’ll act accordingly. All spiritual activities, no more entanglement, we know all the dealings, we know how to deal with the world, energies, living entities, this kind of devotees, that category of devotees or fallen devotees or faithful devotee, we cannot say demoniac devotee (Laughter) demoniac devotee! kanishta adikari is a combination, two in one (laughter). He plays double role (Laughter) behind the curtain he is someone else and on the stage he does good acting. So that demon is also hidden in us, that’s anarthas, cleansing with the knowledge, ‘ceto darpana marjanam’ and then only devotee, got rid of demon. You read the ‘Krishna killing demons’ and the benefit is that demon like qualities, if those qualities are in us, then just by hearing Krishna killing that demon, the demoniac nature in us is also killed. Anyways demoniac devotee is not the term commonly used but in practice we see sometimes demoniac devotee. It’s not a laughing matter, is this? Oh! I found enemy, I found enemy, where is it? That’s me! (Laughter). I found my enemy, I found my enemy, where is it? Who is it? That’s me. So, enemy is within us.

kama esa krodha esa rajo guna samudbhavah
mahasano maha papma viddhy enam iha vairinam’
(B.G 3.37)

Take note, you have a diary? Take note of this viddhi, you should know, you should note this, ‘enam vairinam’, that is your vairi, that is your enemy, ‘kama esa krodha esa’ so Arjuna said that,’ I am forced ‘balad iva niyojitah’, someone compels me, I know it’s not good no no no, I shouldn’t be doing this but something just drags me into it, pushes me.’ Who is it? What is it? ‘atha kena prayukto yam papam carati parusah’ (B.G 3.36) this was inquired by Arjuna. So even practicing devotee may experience this, this is what Arjuna is talking about. He knows this is not right, no no no no but then one ends up doing that. So what is it? Who is it? That’s a demon Arjuna, that’s a demon. That’s enemy and the name given is ‘ kama esa krodha esa’ there are two of them; there are more of them, bunch of them.

So, basically we are talking of those ideas, attitude, proper attitude towards senior devotees and other vaisnavas outside ISKCON fallen down and again return to practices and then an importance of maintaining proper attitude towards vaisnavas regards the future development of ISKCON. So we had made some comments and there was not much discussion, interaction but not much. If there is anything you wish to do, any discussion? But before we do that I did skip one, we had 5 points to discuss but one of them was in reference to Bhagavad Gita 6.44 purport Srila Prabhupada has quoted up.

‘aho bata sva paco to gariyan yaj jihvagre vartate nama tubhyam’ (S.B 3.33.7)

This is Devahuti’s statement from Bhagavatam and so that’s also a party, means a chanter of Holy name.

‘aho bata sva paco to gariyan yaj jihvagre vartate nama tubhyam
tepus tapas te juhuvuh sasnur arya brahmanucur nama grnanti ye te’

Those who chant the Holy name of the Lord, so they are all the vaisnavas like that and proper attitude towards the chanters of the Holy name. So the commentary by Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura Maharaj on this verse is quite amazing. A person is a dog eater and recommendation is- he should be worshipped if he is ‘vartate nama tubyam…..nama grnanti ye te’. If they are chanters of the Holy name of the Lord, then ‘gariyan’ they should be worshipped, be honoured, don’t think anything. They are chanting the Holy names of the Lord, dog eaters are mentioned and that’s kind of lowest thing to do. That means anybody, everybody in this world, dog eaters or rat eaters (Laughter) in China they eat rats, ant eaters. In China they produce breads with different kinds of ants, oh! This bread is red ant bread, this kind of label they have. Not that this has cashews and this has pistachios (Laughter) this bread that bread or banana bread forget it, they have as many kind of ants they could find in China. They accumulate, maybe they must be producing ants and then one bread with one kind of ants or maybe some mixed ant bread and you gobble it up. So even them, if they are chanting, if they take to chanting, then immediately they are ‘gariyan’- they are worshippable.

“yasya svapacha sa jihvagre eva natusampurnayam tasyameti samyam” Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura, he says that chanting, ‘jihvagre…’ agre means the tip of the tongue, they may not be even using, ‘sampurna’- the complete tongue, the whole tongue, they are just using the tip of the tongue, even then they have to be worshipped. They may be chanting not properly, that’s one meaning of chanting with the tip of the tongue only- ‘jihvagre’. In order for one to chant properly, proper pronunciation, you need to make something called ‘prayatna’, ‘prayas’, even ucharan, ‘prayatna’, whole endeavor, movement of the lips and the mouth and the tongue and the throat, you need to make extra effort. In Bengal they some pronouncing some syllables, they make it easy, Lucky Narayan, what kind of Narayan? Lucky Narayan (Laughter) Lucky. Instead of saying Lakshmi, to say Lakshmi so much effort, lots of air and movement and the tongue to say Lakshmi! Lucky! (Laughter). In Bengal they do not say Lakshmi, they say Lucky. So many words also, ‘khatriya’ not ‘kshatriya’, ‘khatriya’. So there are some short forms where you do not use your whole tongue, you end up using part of the tongue, some of the movements, tip of the tongue only and our devotees from the West also do different things (laughter).

So ‘jihvagre’, this verse says this person he is a dog eater and he is chanting with ‘jihvagre’ meaning tip of the tongue, meant he is not even chanting properly, doesn’t matter, even then he is worshipable. You are chanting the Holy name even improperly; incorrectly you get the credit and is worshippable. And ‘nama eka………..artha” then this verse also says ‘jihvagre vartate nama tubyam’ that this person is chanting one name, not all the times. Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura says, ‘the verse doesn’t say ‘namani’, namani means plural, nama is singular, namani is plural; like pushpani, phalani, pushpa is one but pushpani is many pushpa, many flowers. So he may not be even chanting a lot of chanting, some chanting, some name he is chanting even then he is chanting, he is ‘gariyan’, he is worshippable.

‘vartate’ and then he comments upon the word ‘vartate’, activity ‘vartate’ meaning this person is still in the process of chanting, he is in middle of chanting. He has not even completed his chanting, ‘vartate’ not completed the action of chanting, even then this person is ‘gariyan’. He is in the process, present tense presently chanting, he is in the middle of chanting, he has not completed the chanting; chanting or reciting. Chanting the holy name or chanting mantras recitation, ya! he is in the middle of chanting, he has not completed chanting or he has just now started chanting, just now started, he is not seasoned chanter, doesn’t say that here, he is chanting. He is in the process, just now started chanting, not long time ago and even then that person is to be honored, to be worshipped. And it is to be understood that this person has sometimes in the past within this life or previous, one of the previous lives he has performed all the tapasyas, all the yajyas he has performed. Gone around, taking bath in the holy places, he has given all the charities. He has done all these, as the result now he is chanting the Holy name of the Lord. So this chanting of the Holy name of the Lord is the topmost thing to do. So the 8th offence against the holy name is, chanting Hare Krishna to be considered as one of the most auspicious ritualistic activities. So this one is not a furtive activity, some karma kanda section, some pious activity, punya karma; this is pure devotional service. Which is outcome of doing everything else by the person in the past; hence he has now become eligible to chant the Holy name. Even Chinese, if he is chanting the Holy name now, sometimes in the past he has done everything else.

(Question by devotee being asked)
Answer by Guru Maharaj – He is a beginner, he has started chanting, quantity of chanting, one hour, one month or he has not been even gone through shraddha, bhajan kriya, anartha nivriti, nishta and all those phases, he has shraddha and he has now started chanting. Who can repeat the question? Who understood the question?
Devotee in the audience – as Maharaj explained worshippable, someone who chants is worshipped. Is worshippable means admirable or we should offer him pooja even if he has bad habits?

Guru Maharaj continued….O! Well, you can offer him a flower (Laughter) a garland, offer him obeisance’s, you could do his parikrama (Laughter). He is worship able; you could do ‘sodasupachar’ (laughter). He’ll give it up..Like those chanters in 26 second avenue, New York they were coming with their wine bottles, girlfriends, long hair but they were chanting. Then few months later, Prabhupada said, ‘anyone ready to follow four regulative principles?’ and assembled there, they were ready, it’s like perfection achieved. If they stick to the path, they are on the right path now and if they do some more right things, keep doing even they will be achieving perfection. So in advance, they already have become worshippable. Ok, beside this, anything else from yesterday you want to go back to and otherwise we quit and turn to today’s assignment.

Question – Yesterday you were telling that knowledge, we cultivate knowledge and we already become proud or…how can we properly continue knowledge?

Answer – Like we pray for success to the Lord and Lord fulfills your prayer, we should be remembering, my success is because of the Lord. Lord fulfilled my desire, my prayer. So we should be giving all the credit to the Lord and praising Him or giving Him credit. If we do not do it then we are hypocrites; not grateful or not honest. So again Lord is giving us knowledge and as soon as he has given the knowledge, then, ah! That’s my knowledge, I acquired it; so kind of pride. You have forgotten that you have given. So part of the cultivation is remembering the source of that knowledge or who gave the knowledge and part of the realization is as we become knowledgeable, we realize two things, may be there are some others but want to say two things. God is great, that’s one realization and other realization is, I am just insignificant, infinitesimal…like that, I am just tiny bit, ‘ansa’- just part and parcel. So, God is great, He is isvara, ‘mayadhyaksena’- He is superidentant. He is ‘sarva karana karanam’- cause of all causes….all that full of opulence’s- He is Bhagavan, sarva aisvaryapurna, all the six opulence’s in full but I am just tiny dust.

‘ayi nanda tanuja kinkaram patitam mam visame bhavambudhau
krpaya tava pada pankaja sthita dhuli sadrsam’
(5th verse of Siksastakam)

Please fix me as an atom dust particles at your lotus feet, I don’t even want to be garland around your neck or crown on your head; make me crowned on my head, don’t say this, just make me dust particle and I’ll be more than happy, I mean any connection. So these both things are part of realization, so one is God realization, other one is self realization Lord is Vibhu and I am anu, ‘vibhuatma anuatma’. So this has to be, otherwise again ignorance takes over. This is the knowledge and we have to stay knowledgeable all the time, today, tonight, tomorrow morning, tomorrow, day after. God exists and I also exist but then He is that size and I am this size. That is knowledge, keep it intact, contemplate and don’t lose the sight of your size and servant, not only servant but servant of the servant of the servant. Tendency here is to become boss but the goal is to become das. Boss, it’s very hard from boss to become das, take the position of das. But that’s the position, constitutional position; eternally we are that, so humility and I am not the only servant.

Krishna is Supreme Personality of Godhead and I am the servant, I am His servant, that’s a big position! Krishna is Supreme Personality of Godhead and I am His servant but we should remember that you are not the only servant. That should make you miserable (laughter) I wish I was the only servant of the Lord, sometimes you are some big person’s servant or spiritual master’s servant and then you don’t like to share that service with another servant. Spiritual master and I am his servant- personal servant. He doesn’t like to share otherwise 50-50 and I am half the servant. If there is another servant also then your position is, kind of lost your position. I am the only servant, so sometimes they become attached and they don’t want to give, share that.

So, if we could be happy, Krishna is Supreme Personality of Godhead and he has many many many many servants and then you are lost! You are just nobody, one of the billions and trillions, countless servants and you are just one! But in fact still is not a small position. You are lucky, lucky you, Lord accepts you also as His servant. So happy to be one amongst many servants or servant of the servant. That’s even higher position, to be servant of the servant, is a superior position. And you want to have even higher then you go servant of the servant of the servant, that’s higher position. Even higher position, then servant of the servant of the servant of the servant. So not only we appreciate Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead but we appreciate other servants of the Lord, other devotees of the Lord. “purusam nrsu” Lord says in the Bhagavad Gita 10th chapter, ability in man “purusam nrsu” . The human beings, if they have the capability, ability, that’s Me, that’s Me! So whenever we see some capability, ability in some other devotee, other servant of the Lord, you should be…Oh! This is Lord, Lord has made him capable. His ability, his capability, responsibility, response ability, how he responds, how responsible, responsibility. When you see someone responsible- see Lord, that’s not Lord but Lord has appeared in form of that ability. Lord wants us to see that “purusam nrusu” I think we stop and proceed….ok.

So, B.G 12.13-19, what do you normally do when you have an assignment like that? Read. So you have read and you have come? Now what do you do? Question and answer, oh! You are not ready to make a presentation? (Laughter) So, it’s all open, anything is possible.

So, first of all it says, identify qualities B.G 12.13-19, which are particularly relevant for preachers of Krishna consciousness. Ok so why don’t we do that? We want to identify. There is board or something? ya, so who is the writer? So verses, you know which verses you have come prepared and now we want to identify. Specially remember preachers for Krishna consciousness, quality relevant to the preachers of Krishna consciousness. So, who want to say? Ok raise your hand. You should be able to explain or give little purport on each of these qualities and how to apply.

“Quality relevant to the preachers of Krishna consciousness- equal in happiness and distress”
Preachers shouldn’t be envious; on the contrary he should be kind.
Tolerant in provocative situation
Free from false ego

Oh! You are looking in the book and reading is that allowed? That’s easy (Laughter)

Pure in practice
Equal in honor, dishonor, he is equal
Expert, could do many things at a time
He is always satisfied

Who is he? We always say- He is always satisfied, he is equal (Laughter), he is not envious, what about us, what about me? (Laughter) You are going to be preacher now. At the end of this Bhakti sastri, you will be entering the field of preaching. This is what is expected of you not that someone is pure, he is pure, he is determined, he is…I am! (Laughter)

Doesn’t care for residence, (any new hand?)
Fixed in knowledge
Silent, you were silent all this time (Laughter) that’s a good point but you have broken your silence (Laughter) I will not preach, I will be silent.

Mind and intelligence fixed on Krishna
Free from mundane association

How many qualities we have? I think we should stop listing the qualities, I am sure there are more, some you have forgotten or if we give you time, I am sure you’ll be able to say more but then we also have some time limitations.

Some discussion on this?
How preaching Krishna consciousness helps to further develop these qualities?

Who could say? Now you have learned this, memorized these verses, these qualities but as now you enter the field of preaching, how does that help you to further cultivate and develop these qualities, this is a little discussion.
Devotee from the audience: When we get into the field of preaching, we get the opportunity to practice all of these and by practicing all of these. We could practice some realization, with realization we have a deeper understanding of these qualities and so we’ll be able to engage more deeply into that and imbibe them more properly with realization.

Guru Maharaj- some trial – error also you’ll make, some mistakes and someone was asking and then next time you improve, someone will point out, ah! No prabhu, you did wrong, you said wrong, so next time you rectify your act. Ok, yes prabhu? The more we preach, the more we learn, that’s very good!

Ya! Also Prabhupada said- you read, you hear, you repeat and you realize. In one purport, Prabhupada makes that order, you hear, you read and then you repeat, you preach, you realize, it helps you. ‘aniketana’. Srila Prabhupada also writes you know those Yamduttas, they were not able to, didn’t represent Yamaraja properly in the field. One time they were challenged, they were defeated you know the history from Ajamila’s episodes. Prabhupada writes there, preachers of Krishna consciousness should enter the field of preaching well equipped, knowledgeable. So that there is no humiliation, no embarrassment, I am not remembering the exact words. Prabhupada says, Ajamila in that pastimes, the Yamduttas, they were not able to represent, their performance was very bad but our preachers should be keeping that in mind that you don’t repeat their performance. So better be prepared and go into the field. Of course, they were defeated that time and they went back to Yamaraja and they received some more lessons and then they again went into the field and they didn’t make more mistakes again.

Our preachers are sent, our preaching go door to door. What happens? Are you welcome at every door? Some places may be there is sign ‘Welcome’ (Laughter) or ‘atithi devo bhava’- the guest are as good as God, open door, open arm policy. But at some other doors, ‘Be aware of dogs’ (Laughter) sign is there, they may be opening door just to get the do out (Laughter),shu..shu…. go go go, we have seen, we experienced this. Chasing the dog or they will call the chaukidar, get rid of this sadhu or as the bell rings, they first check who is (Laughter) you know these little things they do. So you’ll not be welcomed everywhere, some places, yes, other places, other experiences. So what happen? What do you have to learn from this? Tolerance, equal in honor and dishonor, right there you will be tested and tried in the field. Here you have memorized the verse “equal in honor and dishonor” and here comes the experience (Laughter) then what do you do? How you respond?

They speaking like, you are welcomed, you have invitation and you are given microphone and audience and faithful audience but that may not be the situation every time. So, you’ll be learning, you have to learn. You may be making some mistakes that’s fine, that’s expected you will make mistakes ‘ to err is human’ but it said, if you don’t learn from your mistakes you have made, then you remain a fool. But if you learn from your mistake, then you become wise and experienced. So after you have gone through some experience, could do little review yourself or present to others, ‘this is what I did or said, please give your feedback, how could I do this next time I’ll have opportunity. So some learning, improving, ok…so we’ll do gayatri, those who are Brahmins and then we’ll have more points.

So someone has Gita, can I have a bigger copy? Ok, here it is thank you. So we have few more points for today and what’s the time limit? Sky is the limit.

So Krishna has delivered Bhagavad Gita, knowledge of Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. He has already asked him to give all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me and if you do that, what will I do in return? I’ll protect you, He said! I’ll deliver you from all the sinful reactions. Do not fear, ‘ma sucah’ and Krsna will now say ‘idam te natapaskaya nabhaktaya kadacana na casusrusave vacyam na ca mam yo bhyasuyati’ (B.G 18.67) . This confidential knowledge, you know which one is this, which has already been spoken, presented. This idam, previously been spoken, presented, this confidential knowledge may never be explained to those who are not austere or devoted or engaged in devotional service nor to one who is envious of Me. So that’s the end of the preaching. Who do you preach to? You do not preach to those who are not austere. They are not austere, don’t preach, never to be explained this knowledge to those who are not austere “atapskaya”. ‘abhaktaya’- If they are not devotees do not explain this to them and ‘asusru..’ – not engage in devotional service, do not explain this knowledge unto them and ‘na ca mam yo bhyasuyati’ – those who are envious, they are also not to be explained this knowledge.

And now discuss Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Srila Prabhupada, that’s not in the purport or you have that? ok.
Mahaprabhu’s and Srila Prabhupada’s mood of extending the eligibility for hearing Bhagavad Gita beyond the limits, Krishna establishes in B.G 18.67 with appropriate references from the Bhakti sastras are discuss the relevance for this mood for ISKCON preachers and that’s you, ISKCON preachers.

So, one Krishna said, we just have heard what one Krishna had to say. And then not another Krishna but same Krishna now His name is ‘ krsnaya caitanya namne’, His name is Sri Krishna Caitanya, this is how Rupa Goswami, ‘namo maha vadanyaya krsna prema pradayate krsnaya krsna caitanya namne...krsnaya…’ I offer my obeisance’s unto Krishna, which Krishna? Whose name is Sri Krishna Caitanya, you get that, ‘krsnaya krsna caitanya, namne krsnaya’ I offer my obeisances unto Krishna whose name is now Sri Krsna Caitanya. So that Sri Krsna Caitanya, ‘jare dako tare kaho krsna upadesh’. One Krsna said on the battlefield of Kurukshetra ‘this is not to be shared, explained to this party that party, they are not eligible’. And then the same Krishna becomes very very magnanimous, unconditional, His way of giving Himself to others is unconditional, charitable, He is magnanimous; more fallen you are, more eligible you are. ‘mo sama patita prabhu na paibe ara..’ because you will not find more fallen person like me, so my dear Lord this is it, I am the candidate, ‘doya koro more’ – please be merciful unto me. ‘patita pavan hetu tava avatara’ – my knowledge is, I have gone to Bhakti sastri course when I was in Mayapur, I have become follower of Bhaktivedanta swami Prabhupada’s Hare Krsna movement and I had been singing or hearing some songs of Narottama dasa Thakura and now I know You are ‘patita pavana hetu’. You have appeared to deliver the fallen souls and I am the fallen, very fallen soul, ‘doya koro more’ please be merciful unto, ‘kripa koro, tava avatara’.

So that Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu is saying ‘jare dako tare kaho krsna upadesh’, you just bumped into somebody and then, you don’t ask him, ‘are you austere prabhu?’ (Laughter) because I know Krishna says, this is not to be explained to them, who is not austere, so if you are not austere, am not going to talk to you. Or what else, are you devoted? (Laughter) Haribol spirit soul? Are you devoted? (Laughter), if you are not devoted, I’ll take lunch break, I’ll honor Prasad, I’ll not preach to you and like that. And like that, are you envious of the Lord, are you engaged in devotional services? So, Caitanya Mahaprabhu, He is Krishna but now has becomes magnanimous, more kind, kinder than Krishna is Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. And ‘patra apatra nahi vicar, sthan asthan nahi vicar’-where to preach, where not to preach is not to be considered, you don’t have to think, who is eligible, who is not eligible, that’s not the consideration. “prati ghare giya” Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that to ‘suno suno haridas, suno nityananda’ they were the leading preachers, Haridasa Thakura is Brahma, the first acarya of our disciplic succession and Nityananda Prabhu is Adi Guru- Balarama. So these two leading preachers, Mahaprabhu says, prati- you go to every home and tell them, ‘bolo krsna bhaja krsna kara krsna siksa’.

You teach siksa, give them instructions of Krishna to them, bolo krsna, ask them to chant Hare Krsna, bhaja krsna, ask them to worship Krsna. And that is what these two Prabhus were busy doing. Nityananda Prabhu would go, knock the door, when they open the doors, Nityananda Prabhu would offer His pranam. That is by example instead of expecting humility from them, instead of expecting humility in the audience, the speaker he is exhibiting his humility and as a result those householders they are stunt to see this preacher’s they are humble, He is very humble, tolerant, respectful. So even if they have plans of not respecting but just seeing how they are respectful towards those householders, towards those persons they want to preach to, right there some revolution in their consciousness and their attitude. Even if they are faithless, immediately they’ll have some faith in those sadhus, in those preachers and on the spot those who are not eligible, they have become eligible just by seeing those preachers, seeing the attitude of the preacher, seeing the humility of the preacher before even they hear the knowledge, how knowledgeable are the preachers.
When we were leaving for Padayatra in ’76, first Padayatra we did was from Vrndavana to Mayapur. It took us five months to get here with the bullock cart Sankirtan Party. The day we were leaving, we had gone to see Srila Prabhupada, get his blessings and we wanted him to do the inauguration of the Padayatra bullock cart Sankirtan Party. And Prabhupada gave us speech and we had some discussion. Prabhupada gave lots of instructions, so one of those things Prabhupada said was that, if people are capable of hearing, understanding philosophy then, ‘jare dekho tare kaho krsna upadesh’ otherwise he said, ‘jare dako tare kaho hare krsna upadesh’ Prabhupada said it differently. Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, ‘jare dako tare kaho krsna upadesh’, krsna upadesh refers to, this is Krsna’s upadesh, Bhagavad Gita is Krsna’s upadesh, Krsna’s instructions, that is Bhagavad Gita. So when Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, ‘yare dekho tare kaho krsna upadesh’, Caitanya Mahaprabhu is referring to, He preached Bhagavad Gita, message of Bhagavad Gita to them.

But Prabhupada said, if they are not…because we also we’ll be going through small villages and even some people illiterate, some farmers, simple people may not digest the teachings of Bhagavad Gita, the confidential knowledge. So he said ‘hare krsna upadesh’, so what did Prabhupada meant? Just chant “Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare”. So we could do that, just ‘hare krsna upadeh’, ‘yare dekho tare kaho hare krsna upadesh’. So normally most of the programs, we start with the kirtan, then end up also with the kirtan, we do sandwich and between little philosophy; layer of bread at the bottom and tomatoes and cheese and another bread on the top, sandwich nice package.

So, the chanting of Hare Krsna, people may not be into this ‘krsna upadesh’, but ‘hare krsna upadesh’, people in general, you want to find out what is dharma for this age of Kali. Chanting of Hare Krishna must be dharma because people naturally get attracted to the chanting of the holy names of the Lord. Have you seen, and as soon as we stop after chanting and dancing for sometimes and we make some announcement or begin talking, what happens? They all turn away, go away (Laughter) disappear and you end up with 4 or 5 people. There are 500 in the beginning, only few listening to your ‘krsna upadesh’ or…So that’s nice package, so Hare Krishna chanting includes infact the philosophy of Krishna consciousness includes everything. And so people, they like chanting and as they become favorable, become inclined and then little talk could be given, philosophy presented, present Bhagavad Gita books or some people may not be into chanting or hearing your discourse, they may be happy with prasadam. That’s also Krishna, enters their heats through their stomach. They are close inside, right? (Laughter), stomach and heart. So, put Krishna into the stomach, the heart will melt; and make heart little favorable and soft and then little dose of philosophy.

Srila Prabhupada used to say, ‘nacho gao, khao’, Krishna consciousness is so sweet, chanting, dancing, feasting and little philosophy (Laughter). First Srila Prabhupada would say chanting, dancing feasting and little philosophy. Sit down and talk but mostly chanting dancing. Take prasadam and little philosophy. So to go by Krishna’s standard and Bhagavad Gita then lot of people will not be eligible to receive this explanation, this dialogue. So then Caitanya Mahaprabhu mood, Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s formula, the way He has packaged, Srila Prabhupada said people come to our temple, so beautiful temple, ISKCON temple, ‘angraise ka mandir’ very clean. In Vrndavana they say ‘angraise ka mandir’, English temple very clean English temple. ‘saheber matha’ they call it ‘saheber matha’ . So they are not glorifying the deity, they are not glorifying Krsna in His form and but even if they glorify beautiful temple, clean temple or good devotees, nice people, courteous people, this could be starting point also, preparing them.

So you don’t have to start your preaching right away but maybe after next visit, next visit, next visit, let them experience other things, just clean temple, beautiful temple, chanting, dancing, feasting other things. And then they should be getting ready at some point to hear. Srila Prabhupada wanted his books, he said, first class or excellent packaging, excellent contents, best contents, best packaging, colour, cover hardbound, so lots of people in early ’70s, they would buy Krishna book. Krishna book like book in India, people have never seen any printing like this or Back to Godhead front cover, inside…Even when I first time saw glitter, printed in Japan. Printing in India 20-30-40 years ago, was very lousy or so. But people not much into content but the packaging was going for, displayed book printed in Japan, overseas, so even those things are winners.

And of course when we talk of austerity, there is a degree, variation of degrees. Some people may be little austere, atleast little austere, some people are more austere, some people not austere, devoted, it’s very rare to find a zero devotion, atleast 1%, 10%. We were just talking, in Bengal is a topic, even 90% of the CPM, the communists are believers although they are officially supposed to be communists and against God and Godlessness. Officially they don’t like their Ministers should be attending a religious function, one minister just resigned, I can’t, I cannot manage, I’m religious, I have sentiments for God, how could I hide, how could I not participate in religious function. I resign from your Communist party and he was made out of the party. I have resigned but he says most of my colleagues they are 90% of you all believers (Laughter). You may officially saying I don’t believe in God, Godlessness ki jai!! So he was saying 90%. So to that degree could be also explained to them that they are faithful or devoted or engaged in devotional services or they are austere.

ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajam aham‘ (B.G 4.11). So, if you think like that, identify people, atleast I see some faith, I see some devotion, I see some austerity that this person is performing. Then Srila Prabhupada policy also for preacher is do what? ‘Fanning the spark’- you see little spark, just little spark you see and the fire, little spark the coal, kind of now it is dying out, it is getting extinguished. When you see that spark and you could from that spark get a blazing fire by fanning it. It is a little spark and you just blew it. What would happen? It will extinguish, it will die out, finished, if you blow it how much that little spark could handle. If you blow, that will be blown out, finished, so you have to be careful and if it is little less blowing, too much little blowing, then also do not make much difference to the, not get the blazing fire out of that spark. So this is art, ladies in the villages, they know how much to blow. In the beginning they blow a little bit and as there are more fire and they also blow a little more, increase their air, more air. So, this art of preaching, how much this person could handle, how much faith, how much you preach to in first phase, first meeting. So, you don’t have to say everything, no hard rule for chanting, no hard rules and fast rules, that’s how we start right? Caitanya Mahaprabhu doesn’t say that, then gradually ten offences (Laughter) against the holy name. No hard and fast rules then ten offences, you have to study Harinaam Cintamani, Bhajan Rahasya and gradually you come up with some more rules.

So that whole art, art and science of preaching has to be learnt as preachers of Krishna consciousness, all those qualities are going to be coming very handy, very useful in presenting philosophy of Krishna consciousness. You saw how Nityananda Prabhu, it was working out, people were becoming inclined, favorable just by seeing His approach, His attitude. Jagai and Madai, how much tolerant, who saved Jagai and Madai? Not Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Caitanya Mahaprabhu had different strategy, Sudarsana!! Getting His Sudarsana cakra ready. But Nityananda Prabhu, the preacher of Krsna consciousness was more tolerant and by seeing on the spot, on the spot these two prabhus, Jagai and Madai got converted; by seeing the kindness of Nityananda Prabhu, they could not believe how kind was Nityananda Prabhu.

There was change of heart and they, on the spot they surrendered, they were ready to follow the four regulative principles and they would chant “Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare” and they were saved. So that’s the mood and mission of Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Srila Prabhupada. We can’t say that contradicts Krishna’s expectation in Bhagavad Gita. It fits in or preparing them so that they become favorable, faithful, devoted, austere. There was a devotee called…Rathayatra…Jayananda. Devotee’s lots of time cite his example. He was very expert in engaging people, just seeing some new bhaktas, new people, he is building rathas and they were just standing around and immediately he would engaged them, do this, do that, paint this, cut this and people would be willing to assist in the services. He was very very expert, very sweet in his dealings and very expert. One of the qualities, expert, so he would engage them. Krishna says, they should be devoted, so Jayananda, he would get them to devote some of their energy, intelligence in works and make them eligible for message of Bhagavad Gita, philosophy of Krsna consciousness.

Narada Muni was little boy where he would just go help his mother, mother washing dishes and cutting in the kitchen. Maha Bhagavatas have come for Caturmasya, Bhagavad katha and little Narada Muni, hey! Bring that little water, get flowers and they’ll give these Bhaktivedantas, they were giving little little task to Narada. Son of this maidservant, so he said how he came to Krsna consciousness. How I came to Krsna consciousness. Narada Muni explains in first canto of Bhagavatam and he had association of these Maha Bhagavatas, little service and with their permission I would take prasad and as the result he became Narada Muni, very thoughtful. So, this little boy, he was given some services to do, some association, some prasad and he became devoted, devotee. So, if you don’t have the eligibility, put into the situation, circumstances where people become eligible to receive Krishna consciousness, appreciate Krsna consciousness. ‘agyat sukriti’ -unknowingly people rendered this service, that service and gradually they become eligible for Krsna consciousness. What do you say? You are finished? Good point.
Whatever works, this is Krishna’s policy, whatever you find eligible, devoted, austere, non envious person, share this explain this knowledge with them. And other places of you are dealing with Jagais and Madais and remember Nityananda Prabhu, remember Srila Prabhupada. ‘yena kena prakarena’ – Think of some ways and means to introduce Krishna consciousness. You have compassion also; you are preacher, full of compassion that’s driving you crazy. You want to give Krishna so you think harder, you’ll find ways and means to introduce Krsna in some form, book form, prasadam form, deity form, chanting dancing form, philosophy form and some culture event form, some kind of membership form get them filled. So, lots of people will fit into, they will like some aspects of Krishna Consciousness or they will like some aspects to some degree, one of the aspect to just little degree, that could be starting then if one is applying that, striving harder to give Krsna, then very few people will be left out, most of the people will somehow fit into one of these categories, one of these aspects of Krsna consciousness and then devotee could also has patience.

One sadhu would go, ‘bhiksamdehi…bhiksamdehi’ bhiksa is not a principle, purpose of visiting homes, but that’s excuse to preach, give us alms, give me alms. So he used to go to one house and that person, whatever he was, communist, atheist or… so he would not, never gave anything, he only drive away this sadhu from his home. One day, this person gave ‘bhiksamdehi’ this person that day he came, he went inside and came out to the door and threw some ashes into his begging bowl or his bag or his kamandalu, so this preacher, sadhu, he became very delighted. Next day, ‘hey! what happen? You are very delighted, so happy, joyful, what happen, did someone gave you some billion dollar in charity?’ and he explained, ‘ this person would never ever give me anything but today! He at least, he thought of giving, what he gave, that don’t ask me! (Laughter); today he gave, he thought of giving and he ended up of giving, he not only thought but he gave it.’ So, he was very happy. So, one of these days he will give the right thing, atleast he thought, he never gave but now he started giving. Maybe he gave wrong thing but one of these days he’ll give the right thing also.

Patience like this, tolerance like that, because Krsna does say after few verse that, ‘na ca tasman manusyesu kascin me priya krttamah’</strong (B.G 18.69) anyone who share this dialogue with others, so that person is very very dear to Me. No one is as dear to Me as that one who shares this dialogue with others. So we want to be dear, preacher wants to be dear to Krsna by giving this, delivering this message to others so that attempt, wanting to become dear to Krsna, then you will do all possible, whatever is possible. The more risk you take for Krsna, Krsna will be more pleased, you'll become more dear, not just easy going and burning desire, house is on fire, the world is on fire, world is the house for so many living entities. So when house is on fire and preacher on war footing, when there is war then everyone takes it very seriously. Even ladies pick up guns, children will begin throwing bombs, that's a war, emergency and the flood, they say Nityananda Prabhu was cutting canal from Mayapur, from the river goes canal into the field, 100 mile distribution of water. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Nityananda Prabhu, preachers they cut the canal flooding. Seeing the flood here, Prabhupada also, Ganga gets flooded, Mayapur flooded, so we should be flooding the whole world with preaching Krsna consciousness or love of Godhead and when the flood or Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Nityananda Prabhu were flooding the world, the faithful people were drowning deeper. The faithless ones were floating at the top. They also had a connection somewhere deeper, somewhat on the surface, so they all affected, influenced to different degrees as the waves come. Seems we have to move on, it’s ok, we move to couples of points more to go and what is this now... Discuss aspects of Srila Prabhupada's mission reflected Bhagavad Gita 13.26 Verse and purport; discuss relevance of these aspects of Srila Prabhupada mission for ISKCON, 13th chapter text 26. Who has Bhagavad Gita? Read the verse. “anye tv evam ajanantahh srutvanyebhya upasate
te pi catitaranty eva mrtyum sruti-parayanah”

Translation: Again there are those who, although not conversant in spiritual knowledge, begin to worship the Supreme Person upon hearing about Him from others. Because of their tendency to hear from authorities, they also transcend the path of birth and death.
This is the preaching, to hear someone speaks, preach to them and they are not very much conversant with spiritual knowledge but they begin worshipping Supreme person just by hearing from others. So because of their tendency to hear from authorities, so their tendency is to be exploited or employed in Krsna consciousness because they like to hear, the tendency to hear from authorities is there. So as they hear, they also transcend the path of birth and death. Purport, who will read? (Purport being read by devotee from the audience).
Purport: This verse is particularly applicable to modern society because in modern society there is practically no education in spiritual matters. Some of the people may appear to be atheistic or agnostic or philosophical, but actually there is no knowledge of philosophy. As for the common man, if he is a good soul, then there is a chance for advancement by hearing. This hearing process is very important.

Lord Caitanya, who preached Kr?s?n?a consciousness in the modern world, gave great stress to hearing because if the common man simply hears from authoritative sources he can progress, especially, according to Lord Caitanya, if he hears the transcendental vibration
“HareKrsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare”

It is stated, therefore, that all men should take advantage of hearing from realized souls and gradually become able to understand everything. The worship of the Supreme Lord will then undoubtedly take place. Lord Caitanya has said that in this age no one needs to change his position, but one should give up the endeavor to understand the Absolute Truth by speculative reasoning. One should learn to become the servant of those who are in knowledge of the Supreme Lord. If one is fortunate enough to take shelter of a pure devotee, hear from him about self-realization and follow in his footsteps, one will be gradually elevated to the position of a pure devotee. In this verse particularly, the process of hearing is strongly recommended, and this is very appropriate. Although the common man is often not as capable as so-called philosophers, faithful hearing from an authoritative person will help one transcend this material existence and go back to Godhead, back to home.
From hearing to back home, you start from hearing- you end up back to home. So, what is the central theme of this verse, what is stressed in this verse? Emphasized hearing, we have tendency to hear. So make sure you don’t hear speculative speculator but you hear from right authority and that right authority mentioned here is what? Pure devotees then you are in business. So all that it takes to attain Krsna, achieve Krsna, develop Krsna consciousness and ultimately, not ultimately but already in the process you transcend the path of birth and death and finally return back to home, back to Godhead “nitya siddhya krishna prema sadhya kabhu nai sravanadi suddha ceete karaha udaya”.

So, does every living entity has potential to love Krsna? Or only selected few? Every single…you close your eyes, you are touching some living entity, you know that one also, is it living entity? yes, yes…i am living entity. And for sure we know he has a potential to love God, serve God, ‘nitya siddha krsna prema, sadya kabhu…’ this prema is not something that its outside some place and then you open some window and put it inside; go to super bazar and buy some kilos of Krsna prema and have it for breakfast. Is that how it works? Or smear it all over the body from outside, like chandan, Krsna prema. So where there is soul, there is Krsna prema, Krsna prema is in the soul, integral part of the soul is Krsna prema, it’s in him. So to revive that, what is recommended here is? ‘sravana adi….’ beginning with sravana, ‘sravana adi’ means sravana and etcetera. Sravana, kirtanam….like that other devotional activities, processes, but the principle one is ‘sravana’ so that is stated and others have been mentioned etcetera…’sravana adi’.

So by hearing from right authorities, pure devotee, from parampara, disciplic succession, hearing then revival, ‘sthito smi gata sandehah’ (B.G 18.73) ready ‘karisye vacanam tava’. This happened to Arjuna, Krsna did whole demonstration, look look Arjuna, in the beginning Krsna is showing the confused Arjuna, bewildered Arjuna, Arjuna shedding tears and Arjuna talking like a pandit. But you are not pandit, look at your face, there is a mirror, you are lamenting, pandit never laments, you are talking like pandit but you cannot be pandit because you are lamenting. So that kind of Arjuna was in the beginning, then He preached, Krsna talked, ‘sishyaste aham’- Now I am your disciple, soul surrendered unto you, instruct me. Krsna instructed and after 45 mins, what happen? One microphone was given to Arjuna (Laughter) what did he said? He said, ‘nasto mohah’- my mohah finished, ‘smrtir labda’- regain my consciousness. And how does this happen? ‘tvat pradan mayacyuta’- You are ‘acyuta’, You are infallible, I was fallen but You lifted me by Your prasada, what is this prasada? not ‘maha prasade govinde’ (Laughter), that’s the only that we think of but he was referring to Bhagavad Gita as the prasada. ‘tvat prasadan’, prasada came right up in Your mouth. As the result, I am situated properly, no more doubts, I had so many doubts in the beginning, I was trembling, ‘gandivam sramsate hastat’ (B.G 1.29)- all limbs were trembling, gandiva was slipping out of my hands, ‘mukham ca parisusyati’- my mouth was drying up, I was not seeing any beneficial coming out of this whole endeavor, ‘na ca sreyo anupayami hatva…(B.G 1.31)

All that he was saying but now, all is finished, now I am settled, situated properly, so what now, ‘karisye vacanam tava’ (B.G 18.73) now I’ll act; now I have knowledge, I will now implement that knowledge. Not that I have knowledge now, let’s take lunch, knowledge I have now, fighting will think afternoon or tomorrow, let’s take lunch, I have understood, was that attitude of Arjuna? What was his attitude, what was his stand? Right now! Now and her I am ready to fight and hare I go and he started and throwing arrows, showering, he didn’t delay, postpone his implementation. He was acting with knowledge he was told. While remembering Me, you fight, not only fight, not only remember, do two things together, while remembering, you fight. Some people only remember, sit down and remember don’t act and some people just act, they don’t remember but Krsna says, ‘mam anusmara yudhyaca tasmat sarvesu kalesu’ (B.G 8.7), while remembering. So Arjuna started doing that, ‘mam anusmara yudhya ca’, so like that.
So Bhagavad Gita was like a demonstration, see what happens. You see now a person in delusion, bewildered, this that now I am going to talk to him and he is going to hear Bhagavad Gita. Ok, he has heard Bhagavad Gita, now Arjuna, what he had to say and he makes the statement and we understand the outcome of hearing, person is transformed, person is properly situated, ready to act in knowledge, equipped with the knowledge, is acting. Hearing has been, Atul Krishna prabhu we were talking yesterday and I was asking him , what do you want to get out of this verse, what is the central theme? He said hearing the knowledge, the truth, the core of heart of ISKCON, that should be central theme going through the body of ISKCON and activities governed by the knowledge, right source, Gita, Bhagavat, parampara of pure devotee.

Srila Prabhupada has given us and never minimizes importance of hearing and chanting, knowledge, activities based on knowledge. So this has to remain a central focus activity; not getting sidetrack sometimes by other charitable kind of nature and he was citing example of salvation army, one of denomination of Christianity. One of the branch or whatever you want to call, in the beginning they were doing some kind of preaching, talking sastras for salvation of people, I think they were getting criticized or what are you doing for the public, doing something practical or philosophical. So, that society, they changed and they got into social welfare activities giving charities, clothes and this and that and there was no more preaching from Bibble and sastras and philosophy, just welfare. ‘manav seva, madhava seva’, ‘daridra narayan’, Narayana has now become daridra, poor Narayana , He is no more Lakshmi Narayana, He is ‘daridhra Narayan, so He needs help, Narayana needs help. Help, help help. Lots of people, lots of organizations, religions and groups are doing that because Christians are doing it. And converting Hindus so to stop that, Hindus are also getting into charitable work, opening hospitals, doing this that. So they are doing, Christians are doing, Hindus are doing charity work, ‘daridhra narayan’.

As a result, the hearing, the Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavatam, the philosophy, whole knowledge is all abandoned, neglected, forgotten, just some sentiments. As a result they could be converted but because they have no knowledge, they don’t want to understand because people don’t have knowledge. Is it possible now, you have become ‘bhakti-sastri’ knowledgeable, some Christians come and want to convert you, is there any possibility? And you will end up tying cross, give up your kanti mala and has a cross around your neck. Rather they will changed because you are convinced that’s ‘nishta’. So people are getting converted because they only ‘ado- shradha’- some shradha, some sentiments, some faith is there but there is no knowledge of the sastras, they are not established, that nishta is not there.

So if you really want to make sure that they are not converted anymore, this hearing and chanting, pure hearing and chanting, not just some ‘karma kanda jnana kanda kevala viseyera bhanda’ -pot of poison is stressed, rituals. So lots of chanting, “Hare Krsna Hare Krsna Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare”. Lots of book distribution, lots of talking, hearing, more and more people are involved, exposed to this pure hearing and chanting, to other different functions, media, rathayatras, this that festivals and again giving sharing this knowledge, he is hearing and chanting.

This is the topmost welfare program, living entities topmost welfare is in. Well give them Krishna, hearing and chanting, what is exchanged, take Krsna, give Krsna, this is what happens. The living entities are in bliss happy, so emphasize the importance of hearing and chanting. They take it because they have tendency to hear from authorities, otherwise people are claiming to be authority, becoming some kind of authority, they get on the microphone, come on people, you must be authority! Some position, some political leader, some social leader and people have tendency to hear from authority. So that if they could hear from the right authority, faithfully hearing, faithfully hearing from authoritative person will help one transcend this material existence and go back to home, back to Godhead.

Ok, so I think we should be stopping around now. If there is more, well we’ll catch up that tomorrow. Alright?
Haribol!!!

Ultimate Dharma is Devotional Service- Bhakti of Lord Krishna.

Venue: ISKCON Nagpur
Dated: 18 June 2015
Day 3: Tulasi krishna priya namo namah…..(Gurudev singing)

“Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya….”

Hare Krishna,
Purushottam masa is it only for matajis? No! It’s for all of us. In this creation of Lord Purushottam men and women both are prakritis of Lord, so this mass is for His prakriti so that prakriti does some progress in spiritual life. Yesterday we saw how Ajamila had out of body experience and how he left all his bad behavior. Vishnudutas had reached Haridwar to take him back “ami jato amcya gava amacha rama rama gyava”. There the Vishnudutas had come at bank of Indraini 400years back Tukaram went with his body “sahadeha”. As he took his body back there is no samadhi of Tukaram Maharaj, you will not find his Samadhi.

This Purushottam masa is a way to go near Lord, so we do sravanam and kirtan. So one time will come when we will also have to say “rama rama ami jato amchya gava”. We will also should have a destination like Ajamail, it will good na? Haribol. That should be our vision. So we were listening from Sukhdev Goswami where he narrated a story of Ajamila. He was a good cultured Brahman but when he went to bring flowers for the Lord and saw the scene and lost his chetana. He went after the prostitute and brought her at home, some people go to the prostitutes but Ajamila brought her home. Did all bad things to maintain her, cut some body’s pockets and necks.
Two types of Grahastas – 1) Grahasta and 2) Grahamedhi

Grahasta should make his house a ashram means making home a temple, there should be tulsi and cow in place of dogs at home. There should be sastras and scriptures at home, there should be cleanliness. Whatever is cooked in kitchen should be offered to Lord. “je-dina grihe, bhajana dekhi, grihete goloka bhaya” Srila Bhakti Vinod thakur says when I see kirtan at home my home becomes Gokul- that’s grshata ashram.

Lord Krishna, Sri Ram were grahstha , many acharyas were grahsta Srila Prbhupada and Bhaktivinod Thakur and many Tukaram Maharaj also was grashta. Sukhdev swami says “nidraya riyate naktam” people spend night in sleeping and other activities. Hiranyakasyapu also used to like Gold and sleeping. Some people are always lying on the bed like patients are lying in ICU.

As sun rises where is money ? Where is money sweeter than honey, sometimes people also call their wives as honey (Laughter). The entire modernized people come in this section. So Ajamila was grahmedhi, infact he was worst type of grahmedhi. By some fortune he named his youngest son as “Narayana”. He was very attached to his kid, so he was “Narayan centered” he used to call his son always narayan narayana….
He must be thinking “I will not die let others die” he was ignorant busy with his life. Maharaja Yudhisthira said (Mahabharata, Vana-parva 313.116):
“ahany ahani bhutani gacchantiha yamalayam shesha? sthavaram icchanti”

Every day we see people dying, we have heard people die but still we think we will not die can anything be more surprising then this. So this poor Ajamila was wasting his life and one day that time came when Kalsarpa came- Yamadutas come they were so fearsome. Ajamila out of fear and helplessness called “Narayana Narayana”.
“Yampasa panayah” Yamdutas had already thrown their pasa and they had almost taken him out of body. (Slide show was shown in Temple Gurudev says) See the pictures – you can see Ajamila half out of body, that past which is out is soul- Soul also has svarupa it has hands, legs, body, and from his body also light is coming out. So Ajamila called out Narayana…Narayana..Then both the parties where there and each one was clamming we will take him. We will take him. Vishudutas and Yamadutas discsussions goes on and finally Yamdutas go back to Yamraja.
Then Ajamila offered obeisance’s to Vishnudutas and was about to pray but they disappered then he repented a lot and decided now hence forth I will not do all this bad things, I will behave nicely, I will become satadachari help everyone. Then he went to Haridwara .

When is had uttered “Narayana” it was in Nama bhasa level – clearing stage and after Namabhasa come Suddha nama. He decided I will chant the Holy name always. Then he must have read Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu, read about 10 nama aparadha. Initially he would go saying bye to narayan and do all his bad deeds “mum me nama bagalme…”. So now there was revolution in consciousness and he became stable in bhakti it’s described in Bhakti Rasamrita Sindhu “Ghana taralata”. Now he was determined to chant holy name and avoiding all nama aparadhas. There are seva aparadhas and vaishnava aparadha which we should avoid.

We should change our habits, some people lit a cigarette in morning and then begin there day. We should lit a lamp in morning and begun a day. Some people ask help to lit ciggarette and say thank you very much now you have burned my cigarette and later my lungs will burn thank you in advance….(laughter). So now Ajamila was transformed and this time when Vishnudutas came to Haridwara he left his body and the soul entered the transcendental plane. This is the final shot (looking at the slideshow Gurudev is saying beyond this you cannot take photos). The Vishnutdutas are welcoming Ajamila see the beauty of the souls so wonderful, when you will see your soul, when you have realization you will spit at the body. So after self realization you will see your body in mirror you will say “the body that’s not me” –“to me nave” (Marathi).

So now this is 6th canto, 3rd Chapter King Parikshit is asking question,
sri-rajovaca
“nisamya devah sva-bhatopavarnitam pratyaha kim tan api dharmarajah
evam hatajno vihatan murarer naidesikair yasya vase jano yam (S.B 6.3.1)

Praikshit Maharaj is saying Hye! Sukhdev Goswami – Yamaraja is the controller of all living entities but his order had been foiled. When his servants, the Yamadutas, informed him of their defeat by the Visnudutas, who had stopped them from arresting Ajamila, what did he reply? I am confused please tell only you could answer my question.
So this question was asked at the banks of Ganga by Parikshit Maharaj. So Yamadutas reached and described the entire incident to Yamaraj. So Sukhdev Goswami is describing us the discussion between Yamadutas and Yamaraj.

So it’s said yamaduta ucuh.
“kati santiha sastaro jiva-lokasya vai prabho
trai-vidhyam kurvatah karma phalabhivyakti-hetavah” (S.B 6.3.4)

Yamadutas, the order carriers of Yamaraja, were so disappointed that they asked their master, almost in great anger, whether there were many masters other than him. But when we we went to Kanoja there was a different party.

“yadi syur bahavo loke sastaro danda-dharinah
kasya syatam na va kasya mrtyus camrtam eva va” (S.B 6.3.5)

If in this universe there are many rulers and justices who disagree about punishment and reward, their contradictory actions will neutralize each other, and no one will be punished or rewarded. Otherwise, if their contradictory acts fail to neutralize each other, everyone will have to be both punished and rewarded.
Animals and birds don’t have karma they undergo evolution. “vedo narayan saksat” to follow veda is dharma, animals don’t have such dharma. They are not under control of yamaraj and it’s not expected that they will follow dharma. So only human beings are under the jurisdiction of Yamaraj. We were about to bring Ajamila, such people should be punished so that they don’t repeat their acts “once bitten twice shy”.

“niyamanam tavadesad asmabhir yatana-grhan
vyamocayan patakinam chittva pasan prasahya te” (S.B 6.3. 9)

We about to bring him but they freed him and broke our pasa.

“tams te veditum icchamo yadi no manyase ksama
narayanety abhihite?ma bhair ity ayayur drutam” (S.B 6.3. 10)

As soon as the sinful Ajamila uttered the name Narayana, these four beautiful men immediately arrived and reassured him, saying, “Do not fear. Do not fear.” Oh! Dear come near do not fear I am here (laughter). They said we wish to know about them from Your Lordship. If you think we are able to understand them, kindly describe who they are? You please explain us how many rulers are there? Are you not the only rule?
So Yamaraj remembered Lord Hari before answering their questions, so who is remembering Lord Hari. Yamaraj, did you know this yamaraja You must be thinking yamaraj is terrorist. So if you want to know about anybody hear about him not just go after the face. “dila sacha aur cheraha zhuta” (laughter)

yama uvaca
“paro mad-anyo jagatas tasthusaa ca otam protam patavad yatra visvam
yad-amsato sya sthiti-janma-nasa nasy otavad yasya vase ca lokah” (S.B6.3.12)

Yamaraja said: no..my dear servants, you have accepted me as the Supreme, but factually I am not. Above me, and above all the other demigods, is the one supreme master and controller. Whose partial manifestations are Brahma, Visnu and Siva, who are in charge of the creation, maintenance and annihilation of this universe. These are the Guna avatar, like that there are many avatars “nanaavatra”. So is the controller of all, He is like the two threads that form the length and breadth of a woven cloth. The entire world is controlled by Him just as a bull is controlled by a rope in its nose, right..left …go stop…so like that Lord controls everything.

Then there are departmental heads as Prabhupada said, there are many Isvars but Parmeshawar is one “ishvarah paramah krishnah sac-cid-ananda-vigrahaha anadir adir govindaha sarva-karana-karanam” this is definition of Lord .
So Yamaraj is saying Indra, the King of heaven; Nirrti; Varuna; Candra, the moon-god; Agni; Lord Siva; Pavana; Lord Brahma; Surya, the sun-god; Visvasu; the eight Vasus; the Sadhyas; the Maruts; the Rudras; the Siddhas; and Marici. We are also affected by the modes of material nature. Even those in the mode of goodness, like the many demigods and great rsis cannot understand the activities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

So Yamdutas have still not forgotten the Vishnudutas, Yamaraj says- yes yes whom you met were Vishnudutas they are worshipped by the demigods and they have a beautiful form. They always do protection of Lords devotees that are their duty. So this is arrangement made by the Lord. From whom they protect? They protect the devotees from my Yamadutas also. Such things keep happening you did not know the glories of Hari Nama- Holy name that’s your mistake.
So those who have tilak on the forehead and mala in hand (Gurudev showing his bead bag) oh! What is this accident! Injury in your hand, or do you have gun you are going to target me (laughter). And tulsi beads in neck, like a dog which has belt in neck is safe but the dog without the belt is taken by the municipality van. God knows where they take them? May be china there they will get lot of customers for dogs (laughter). So the Vishndutas protect the devotees.

Yamaraj says- “dharamam to saksad bhagvat pranitam” (S.B 6.3.19) what is the source of dharma? Lord, we can’t make dharma, now a day’s people are making dharma. “dharamam to saksad bhagvat pranitam” Prabhupada had recited this verse 100s and 1000s of time, come on say it! “dharamam to saksad bhagvat pranitam”.

“svayambhur naradah sambhuh kumarah kapilo manu?
prahlado janako bhismo?balir vaiyasakir vayam” (S.B 6.3. 20)

Yamaraj says- Lord Brahma, Bhagavan Narada, Lord Siva, the four Kumaras, Lord Kapila [the son of Devahuti), Svayambhuva Manu, Prahlada Maharaja, Janaka Maharaja, Grandfather Bhisma, Bali Maharaja, Sukadeva Gosvami and I myself know the real religious principle. “dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam” so we 12 mahajans know the dharma.
So all of us should know about dharama, we keep studying chemistry, physics, how to earn money, how to get degrees. During our times we just have 4 -5 degrees but now a days there are so many degrees. But these all degrees are “avidya” then what is vidya? Knowledge of dharma is vidya. I am student of Bhagvat Gita and I am doing course “discover yourself”. You become ‘Bhakti sastris’ read Nectar of Instructions, Bhagvat gita and Bhakti Rasamarita Sindhu (NOD). Srila Prabhupada has made all arrangements for us. “divya jnana hrdi prakashita”

“etavan eva loke smin pumsam dharmah parah smrtah
bhakti-yogo bhagavati tan-nama-grahanadibhih” (S.B6.3.22)

Devotional service, beginning with the chanting of the holy name of the Lord, is the ultimate religious principle for the living entity in human society. Ultimate dharma is devotional service- bhakti of Lord Krishna. Lords name liberated Ajamila, so we should do kirtan of His Name, Guna, rupa and dhama. And this sankirtan is enough destroy our sins.

Now yamaraj is going to give special instructions to yamadutas, he says “now be careful don’t bringing any one don’t repeat this mistake”. Those who are enjoying devotional life, those who are attending sravana utsava don’t bring them.
My dear servants please bring to me only those sinful persons who do not use their tongues to chant the holy name and qualities of Krsna. Please chant chant…..but people says can’t can’t…bring such people. And whose hearts do not remember the lotus feet of Krsna even once, and whose heads do not bow down even once before Lord Krsna bring them.
Bow down if you have not payed obeisance’s by bowing down, then your name will be deleted from the computer of Yamadutas and noted in Vishnudutas computer Haribol… Send me those who do not perform their duties toward Visnu, which are the only duties in human life. Please bring me all such fools and rascals. Those who are bound by desires, attachments bring them to me, ok understood.

“tat ksamyatam sa bhagavan purusah purano narayanah sva-purusair yad asat krtam nah
svanam aho na vidusam racitanjalinam ksantir gariyasi namah puru?aya bhumne” (S.B 6.3.30)

Then Yamaraja, considering himself and his servants to be offenders, spoke as follows, begging pardon from the Lord.] O my Lord, my servants have surely committed a great offense by arresting a Vaisnava such as Ajamila. O Naraya?a, O supreme and oldest person, please forgive us. Because of our ignorance, we failed to recognize Aj?mila as a servant of Your Lordship, and thus we have certainly committed a great offense. Therefore with folded hands we beg Your pardon. My Lord, since You are supremely merciful and are always full of good qualities, please pardon us. We offer our respectful obeisances unto You. It’s a rule if a servant commits mistake, the master has to be punished as said in Nayasatra, so yamaraj is following that.

Now there is comment of Sukhdev Goswami – he says the best atonement is taking Lord Holy name. So now Yamadutas have heard all this talk about Lord, they were surprised and now they were fearful to look at the devotees.

“itihasam imam guhyam bhagavan kumbha-sambhavah
kathayam asa Malaya asino harim arcayan” (S.B 6.3.35)

Sukhdev Goswami says I had heard this katha when the great sage Agastya, the son of Kumbha, was residing in the Malaya Hills and worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead, I approached him, and he explained to me this confidential history.

So same katha I have recited here, now you can tell about this katha to your dear ones then you will get the benefit of the katha, now think whom you will tell this katha to. You can also read it again.

Nitai Gaur Premanande …Hari Hari bol…

Effects of Holy name

Venue: ISKCON Nagpur
Dated: 17 June 2015

Jay Radha Madhav Kunja bihari….

I welcome you all on the first day of Purushottam Month- Those who have arrived even before the time. There are many exemplary souls like Valmiki, Jagai-Madhai, Mrugari (who was a hunter & guided by Narad Muni). Every devotee sitting here is an example of ‘Effects of Holy name’. What you were and now see what you are! Chaitanya Caritramita is full of such examples.

Ajamila named his 10th Son as ‘Narayan’ and every now and then he was calling, “Narayan, come here! Narayan, where are you?” Like father-mother usually call their kids but Ajamila was with some extra love towards his son. Yesterday we listened about Yama-dutas and Vishnu-dutas. Vishnu-dutas questioned Yamadutas , “Prove that you are dutas of Yamaraj. What are symptoms of Dharma? And whats’ your procedure to punish a soul? Do you have some system?

The conversation between Yama-dutas and Vishnu-dutas, is being delivered to us here. Hence only it’s included in Bhagvatam. If Ajamila got benefited from this conversation we too would. One who will listen katha with faith and propagate it with devotion to others (who are very busy and not even having time to die) he or she will never go to hell, so our one batch is ready who will never see hell. Plus he or she will be get Worshiped in Vaikuntha.
Vedas are Narayan, they originate with the exhalation of Lord. Vedas are ‘apaurusheya’. Three gunas (Goodness, Passion and Ignorance) are running this world. Even these 3 gunas are responsible for four Varnas (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Shudra). Brahmin is in Goodness, Shudra in ignorance and remaining two are mixture of Passion & ignorance.

In kaliyuga maximum people are ‘shudras’ as they are filled with ignorance. Four ages (Satya, Treta, Dwapar and Kali) are also reflections of these four Varnas. Satyayug with Brahmin, Treta with Kshatriya, Dwapara with Vaisya and Kaliyuga of Shudras. But Lord is the ultimate controller – ‘mayadhyaksena prakrtih suyate sa-caracaram’ (BG 9.10)

Now Yamadutas replied, “No no! We have a well defined system to decide to punish or not.” A big IT system, with supercomputers and a secretary named Chitragupta as Data entry operator. We are always ready with database. Our informers are spread over everywhere. Who are the Informers? Sun, ether, air, Moon, 10 Directions, Earth, and Time. So where do you run? They are eyewitnesses of your all activities.
Based on qualities of our previous Karmas, its get decided where one will take Birth. And our four Varnas they are based on ‘Characters’ not on the Birth “guna-karma-vibhagasah” (B.G 4.13). It means one is not Brahmin just as he got birth in Brahmin family. There are 3 types of work: 1) By Thoughts 2) By Body 3) By Tongue. As Silkworm creates the cocoon around his body with his own fluid and get locked inside it, so the soul is with his own Karmik reactions creates for death and rebirth.

They said, “Once Ajamila was very courteous, he was following all sastric injunctions, very pious one”. But once he went in a garden for fruits and flowers. There he saw a man-woman indulged with each other and got agitated. Then he went behind that woman. Both that man and woman were Sudras. There are only two themes of films nowadays: sex and violence. One Hero and one villain, they are so fallen but yet our Heros ..Indeed both are villain.
Human is indulged in such activities like cats and dogs. Animals carry on with their activities anywhere without any shame. Hence Prabhupada used to say ‘its society of cats and dogs’. Woman is the topmost pleasure for man and so is man for her. Both are busy in glorifying each other. They see nothing beyond that. Senses should be pulled back from their objects like a tortoise roll back its senses.

Madan, Kandarpa, Anang etc. all are names of Kamdev (God of Lust). Anang means without body as Lord Shiva once burned him, so without body. Madan-Mohan means one who attracts even cupid. We pray to Madan-Mohan so that He should remove Madan(cupid) from our path of devotion. So Ajamila violated all Sastric injunctions. Hence we will punish him in 28 types of our hell. Now the turn is of Vishn-dutas Ajamila is listening it with Half-in half- out of his body.

Here the 2nd Chapter of 6th Canto begins,
Vishnu-dutas said, “Each movement he was uttering the name of Lord. Narayan come here..Narayan eat this and so on. So, he has repented all his misdeeds. And when at last moment he yelled Narayan!1 What to say about it!” Common man follows the great ones.

One who is perfect-chanter has repented all his misdeeds. Big one or small one all his misdeeds get nullified. Krishna says that the way Draupadi called me, “Hey Govind! Hey Krishna!! “I got indebted to her. In “Hari-naam Chintamani’’ by Bhaktivinod Thakur and again in Padma-purana its described that there are three stages of Chanting: 1) Offensive 2) Nama-bhass (illusion) 3) Shudha-Nama. Nama-Bhas means when name was taken in illusion.

At the time of that movie “Dam Maro Dam..mita jaye gam, bolo subah sham Hare Krishna Hare Rama’, we used to go for preaching in Mumbai. So looking us, people used to run in home and play that Song on tape-recorder in a loud just to tease us. The fire will always burn when one touches it knowingly or even unknowingly, so is Holy name. Though they were trying to tease us but definitely would have got benefited.

The devotees in Tokyo (Japan) go to the visitors even the Muslim and they say –“please see this books” again and again until they are anger and say.. “haRAMkhor”. Then devotees became very happy. Same is with Chand-kazi. Devotees of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu told him- “everyone is saying ‘Hari Bol’ why don’t you Kazi sahib? So to avoid them, he replied ‘Tomorrow I will say HARI BOL’. And the devotees jumped in joy.
So Vishnu-dutas freed Ajamila from the bindings of Yama-dutas. Now he is contemplating about his misbehavior. Similarly we should contemplate on Katha. Listening is just the starting, after that it comes remembrance and contemplation. We don’t want just accumulation but assimilation. Now he is contemplating about past, wife and his parents. And he decided to be a new person from the same movement. He realized that he was acting just as a toy in hands of a prostitute earlier.

Srila Prabhupada wrote, we are just toys of your hand my Lord please make us dance as per Your wish

“nacao nacao prabhu nacao se-mate
kasthera puttali jatha nacao se-mate”

So it’s time that we should also pray, because more or less we all are like Ajamila. Now Ajamila is of 88 years, it’s already too late. Now he went to Haridwar. Haridwar Dhaam ki Jay! Ganga Maiyaa ki Jay!!
Devotion is something beyond liberation. After sometime, Ajamila saw the Vishnu-dutas. He understood that now they came to take him. So he gazing at the Ganga River he left his body. And attained the divine form like Vishnu-dutas. And he entered the Golden plane and then the plane took off.
Nitai- Gour Premande Hari Hari Bol !!
Although Ajamila went to Vaikuntha but our Katha doesn’t end here. We will again come with the third session tomorrow.
Hari Bol !!

Today we are getting Our Master Our Natha

Venue: Chamorshi
Dated: 15 June 2015

Lord Krsna’s one name is Jagannath, why Jagannath because He is swami of jaggat, He is our Natha- swami, also He is our master our malik. Today we are getting our master our Nath here. Are you happy you got your master?? We were anatha without natha, now we have become sanath, anath se sanath, This world is also big orphanage. But today we have got our master and we have become sanath.

Jai Jai Jagannath saciranandan …(Guru Maharaj singing ) Lord Jagannath is worshiped in the three worlds. In jagannath puri He carried sankha cakra and in Nadia He took sanyasa and He holds a danda and kamandalu.. Jai Jagannath… In treta Yuga as Lord Rama he killed Ravan “paritranaya sadhunam vinashaya cha dushkritam” (BG 4.8)

In dwapara yuga He manifested pastimes of Golok, “golokera vibhava lila prakasa karila”. Then comes Kali yuga, Lord accepted bhava of Radharani and came as Caitanya Chandra and He preached the chanting of the holy name of Lord.

Lord is all merciful.. dinabandhu, so today Lord has come here, we always hear Lord is there!! Lord is there!! But today we saw Lord and Lord saw us. And it’s our great fortune we are all present here, it’s all Lord’s arrangement. Lord Jagannath resides in Nilacala but today He has manifested here. At this time the Jagannath temple in Puri is closed after snana yatra. Lord Jagannath has fever; doctor says you need bed rest and special diet, so since that day Lord is taking rest. This year there is special festival on occasion of Navakalevaram. On snana yatra day this year was the last darshan of Jagannath after that He will be not well then He will be resting. Devotees will be hankering for darshan of the Lord.

Krishna’s pastimes are so beautiful that one who hears his heart becomes purified of all anarthas. When Lord was born everybody said “nanda ke ghar anandabhayo..” So Lord is anada He attracts us by His beauty, His love and gives us Ananda.

So when there is Netrotsava at Puri Jagannath Temple people go to take darshan of Lord and then there is ratha yatra. This year new deities will be installed in Puri and many people will go for ratha yatra to take darshan of Lord Jagannath in new form. Lord loves His devotees, He said to Arjuna in Gita “priyo ‘si me “.

Every 60 to 70 years our mother father changes, villages changes, Language changes, that all happens to the body. And we are souls, say we are souls!! Lord loves us. That’s why He comes again and again “sambhavami yuge yuge” and tell us to say Hare Krsna.

By taking darshan; by reading gita that’s satsanga so that all souls get connected to the Lord. Some people say hye!! We are poor! You are not poor, your father is rich He is Jagannath and our father says let’s go to vaikuntha. Without Rama there is no aram. So let’s go towards Lord, let’s go to temple and learn more about Lord. People say -there is poverty! We want job! We want money! But devotees say we have only Krsna Bhagvan for you. Best welfare activity is connecting everybody to Lord. Till the time we have this body we will have “janma mrutyu jara vyadhi” everybody dies, do you think rich people don’t die? Or rich people don’t get disease?? In fact they get more diseases. This life is like “kamal dala jala Jivan dalamal” In Nepal there was earthquake 10,000 people died. In Andhra Pradesh so much heat was there the farmers went to work in farm and never came back they all died due to heat –“adhidaivik klesha”.

People are killing each other, all bad news allover so we should think of moving forwards go towards Lord. Good days will come politicians say; what good days death is going to come one day. So let’s serve Lord and be happy. Prabhupada went to west and people there had lot of money but no happiness then they started chanting and became happy. Many are now becoming Hare Krsna people, what are we called? we are Hare Krishna people.
So preaching is going all over. So you also preach and achieve perfection of life.

Jagganath swami ..ki jai
Nitai guar premananda hari….haribol

We also used to go to airport to receive Srila Prabhupada

Venue: Nagpur Airport
Dated: 14 june 2015

Hare Krishna,
We also used to go to Mumbai airport to receive Srila Prabhupada like you all came. We used to take his ambassador car to receive him, he had three cars one in Mumbai and other two in Vrindavan and Mayapur. We used to see him climbing down the staircase, Srila Prabhupada always looking in front. I was brahmacari at Mumbai at that time 40 years back.

We used to go with garland as you brought and apply chandan on Prabhupada’s forehead, you did not bring chandan. We used to welcome Srila Prabhupada with kirtan and dance.
Mumbai is Srila Prabhupadas office, a person has to go regularly to his office, some have to go everyday (laughter). Srila Prabhupada used to stay for 6 months in Mumbai and 6 months in foreign countries for preaching. Whenever he used to come to Mumbai we used to go to receive him and when he used to leave Mumbai that time also we used to go to drop him at airport. Our heart filled with his separation and our eyes used to follow him as he entered the airport. Then we used to climb the terrace and see his plane taking off and keep looking at the plane till it vanishes in the sky in the clouds and pay obeisance’s there on the terrace and say loudly Jai Srila Prabhupada and then go back to temple.

Prabhupada went to New York via Nagpur his plane was from Kolkata, so from Mumbai he went to Kolkata via Nagpur. So this year is a special year as it will be 50 years, 50th anniversary of Srila Prabhupadas journey to New York. So we will have a grand celebration on that day 2nd August 2015, we will go to the station and the same train will come in which Prabhupada went to Kolkata vai Nagpur from Mumbai. So we will have a grand celebration there. Banners all over celebrating the day when Prabhupada went to New York to propagate the message of Godhead all over the world.
All over there will be celebration on that day. So “Prabhupada in Nagpur” is a good topic to write book on, you can all do research and write a book. Prabhupada had given his hand written Bhagvat gita to the manager of Nagpur airport at that time, this should be included in that book. Prabhupada had a desire to have IKSCON in Nagpur, Hg Harisauri Prabhu has written this in his book “Transcendental dairy”. When once Prabhupada was sitting in his room with some of his disciples there was a map of world. Prabhupada was keeping his finger on some countries and saying “We will have a temple here, we will have a temple here” like that Prabhupada kept his finger on Nagpur and said “we will have temple here”. HH Sridhara Swami Maharaj was witness and he shared that incident with me.
So you all preach, by Prabhupadas mercy we have temple here in Nagpur and we should strive hard to join more and more people to our movement.
Haribol.
