LORD PROTECTS THE CHANTERS

We appreciate you all and congratulate you all for chanting with us this morning also. Today is Sunday and we have only 396 participants so far. Currently world holy name festival is going on and considering that the number of chanters are less. Some of the devotees who chant with us on this conference either they are sleeping or they are doing something else and so they are not with us, which is a sorry state of affairs.

Namacarya Sri Haridas Thakur ki jai! He is our Namacarya. Acarya of the holy name. Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu designated him as namacarya. Who designated him? The Supreme Personality of Godhead! Gauranga! Lord designated, promoted, appointed him as namacarya. Acarya of the holy name. By his mercy only we used to chant and we are chanting and also celebrating this world holy name festival. By the mercy of Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur only we will be able to celebrate this World Holy Name Festival successfully.

Otherwise he is also an acarya of our sampradaya, Brahma- Madhva-Gaudiya Sampradaya. First acarya or found acarya is Brahma and he appeared as Brahma-Haridas. His name is Brahma-Haridas so he is Brahma and Haridas. We pray at his lotus feet, for his mercy. Those participants of the
world holy name festival and those who are listening now to the glories, from all over the planet and those who are participating, require the mercy of Haridas Thakur. World Holy Name Festival requires boost and blessings and divine intervention of Haridas Thakur. He could do such things and we need his power. We require his blessings when we are in the middle of this herculean task of celebrating World Holy Name Festival. And those who are not participating in this festival, may Namacarya Haridas Thakur give them intelligence and engage them also in glorification of the holy name, by organising and participating in this festival.

There were very difficult circumstances. Against all odds namacarya Sri Haridas Thakur chanted. One of the situations was when he was being
beaten in public in the marketplace. Still he did not stop chanting. Lord had noticed this, how this devotees namacarya Haridas Thakur, was beaten by Chand Kazi’s men. Lords heart melted and he had rushed to the scene. With his Sudarshan chakra. Lord was ready to cut the necks off. Just then Lord noticed in spite of all such treatment being given by Chand kazi’s men , Haridas Thakur was mercifully disposed and very kind to them. So then Lord decided not to use his weapon , Sudarshan to kill or crush this folks into pieces, Lord did not do so. Then he did something else to protect namacarya Shri Haridas Thakur. Which was that market place that we cannot tell you.

But that scene, comes to our mind when talking today. When namacarya Haridas Thakur was being beaten in the marketplace public also was
watching, and there were various reactions of different people on Haridas Thakur being beaten. And what was the reaction of the Lord? He had also appeared at the scene. We try to visualise this scene. The Lord is there with his Sudarshan and then He couldn’t use His Sudarshan, as Haridas Thakur was being kind to those who were beating him. Then He was thinking of some alternative to protect him. How should I protect My Haridas? So then what did the Lord do? Lord was coming in between Haridas Thakur and those who were beating him and all that beating which was done with so many long and strong sticks, they were now beating on the back of the Lord, Gauranga. Then Caitanya Mahaprabhu displayed very extraordinary pastime, which lasted for 21 hours, sapta-prahar Mahaprakash Lila in Navadvip Mayapur.

So series of various scenes were there and one of them was namacarya Haridas Thakur and Gauranga Mahaprabhu reciprocating and talking, so during that time Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu uncovered his back. Haridas Thakur looked and saw the marks on Mahaprbhu’s back, marks of the beating with the stick. When Haridas Thakur saw that, immediately he realised and he was reminded of that ghastly episode where he was being beaten. He realised that the beating had taken place on the back of his Lord so he lost external consciousness. He started rolling on the ground. ‘Oh for my sake my Lord has taken this beating. Just see the kindness of my Lord. ……..na me bhaktah pranasyati. He has declared in Bhagavad-Gita, that My devotees will never be perished. He had declared that. So Caitanya Mahaprabhu had also saved Haridas Thakur. He used to say , – suno suno Nityanand suno Haridas, please chant and spread the glories of the holy name, and then report back to me. Do not fear, I will be there, if need be, I could come on the scene to take care.

paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam …… I will appear and take care of those dusta or miscreants. He had mentioned that to Nityananda Prabhu and Haridas Thakur. So here we see that promise that He had given to Arjun on the battlefield of Kurukshetra and also as Caitanya Mahaprabhu was fulfilled. ‘You go. Here you propagate, you chant the holy name. If anyone is opposing I will take care, I will come in the middle of those. We see all this demonstration of that promise. His words we remember when such pastime took place. It reminds us of the glories of the holy name, glories of Gauranga, and glorious chanter of the holy name namacarya Sri Haridas Thakur. So that is the thing you should be reminded to remember, while chanting. Books are the basis, siddhant or bases of the power of chanting of the holy name of the Lord. So you are chanting and dancing, doing japa or Harinama. Japa that we do, is for our own good. We cannot just remain Bhajananandi’s ,

just selfish, self centred, worried about our own liberation only. In Gaudiya Vaisnava parampara, there are ‘gostyanandi’ , spreading the glories of the Lord and the holy name, share them with others. Gostyanand. Bodhayantaha parasparam’. So japa is ‘Bhaja anand’ and Harinama Sankirtana on the streets as it is happening now, in Noida and other places, is Gostyanand.

64 rounds are also chanted. I am seeing the whole scene in the Ahmedabad, devotees have gathered with the mission of chanting 64 rounds. I am also getting reports from Bhiwandi and other places. Lots of 64 rounds chanting is being done. That’s nice, others could also do this. This Japa time is also part of the holy name festival. Chant more and more rounds, get new people to chant.

In Noida Temple yesterday 120 visitors chanted one round of Hare Krishna maha-mantra. Others also can do such things. New people some 4000
people were invited in Noida temple and they were also given beads and they chanted. Prema Padmini mataji sent report , they devotees chanted in the park this morning which was a beautiful scene, in the park so many people sitting and chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna. They are visitors and they also chant. From Noida Sita Rani Mataji manage to go on the streets to do Harinama.

There is a report from Dubai. There Matajis are making visitors chant one round of maha-mantra which is appreciated. We also heard report from
Madhavanandini from Russia, that devotees are getting together and they are doing Marathon of chanting. Radhika Raman Prabhu from Toronto
participated in chanting with us this morning. He didn’t share any reports. Is Toronto Temple participating in the holy name festival? If not, participate now in the World Holy Name Festival. Remind Bhaktimarga Swami Maharaja to arrange special programs for World Holy Name Festival. Give my message to him. Reports are pouring in. Hare Krishna to all the organizers. Kanpur is going on padayatra.

So today, tomorrow and day after tomorrow still you have the chance. Today is Sunday, you can make this holiday into a holy day. Don’t take breaks, stay busy. Today we are expecting more than 10000 devotees from Delhi NCR, and there will be Maha Maha Sankirtana in Delhi today. I will also be there. You can do something similar in your respective countries. There is one more report which I can see now reports are just pouring in. Yesterday in different parks around Noida, 550 new people chanted one round of maha-mantra.

Hare Krishna, Welcome and Thank You for joining this conference and chanting. There are about 500 devotees chanting from all over the world, as well as some more on FaceBook.

I am also getting lots of reports on the screen. You are all in high spirits and they are inspirational reports. It is inspirational just to see you chanting what to speak of getting reports of you getting others to chant as part of the World Holy Name Festival. I was reading several of the reports while I was chanting.There were so many of you sending reports, I could not read them all. You could also have read.

Hearing the holy name and reading the holy name is not Maya. Talking about reports, I was listening to Caitanya Bhagavat. I heard and understood that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu chanted….

…. Himself. He was chanting and dancing in the nectar of the holy name and at the same time He was instructing others, His associates, especially Haridas Thakura and Nityananda Prabhu:

suno suno nityananda, suno haridas
sarvatra amar ajna koroho prakas prati ghare ghare giya koro ei bhiksa
bolo `krsna’, bhajo krsna, koro krsna-siksa iha bai arna boliba,
bolaiba dina-avasane asi’ amare cohiba

“Listen, listen, Nityananda! Listen, Haridasa! Make My command known everywhere! Go from house to house and beg from all the residents, `Please chant Krsna’s name, worship Krsna, and teach others to follow Krsna’s instructions.’ Do not speak, or cause anyone to speak, anything other than this.” Sri Sri Godruma Candrer Ajna “The Divine Command of Sri Godruma-candra” by Srila Saccidananda Bhaktivinoda Thakura)

On top of that Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu further instructed to preach the holy name. It is a festival. He told them all to come back at the end of the day and report their preaching efforts to Him. “Do not be afraid. Wherever you spread the glories of the holy name, I will be there with my Sudarshan Cakra. I will protect you. You go preach.” He was instructing like that – “You chant and you should instruct the whole world to also chant the name of the Lord.” He also went out to preach.

The instructions to Haridas Thakura, Nityanand Prabhu and the others to become Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu followers, devotees and associates. These instructions are not just there for them. We should take it in the spirit that those instructions are for all of us. We should also remember what Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said – “ I am with you. I will protect you. Surrender unto Me. Do not fear.”

Krsna told Arjun in Bhagavad-gita:
mam hi partha vyapasritya
ye ‘pi syuh papa-yonayah
striyo vaisyas tatha sudras
te ‘pi yanti param gatim

TRANSLATION
O son of Prtha, those who take shelter in Me, though they be of lower birth-women, vaisyas [merchants], as well as sudras [workers]-can approach the supreme destination. (BG 9.32)

Krsna says it in Sanskrit and in Bangla. In Kurukshetra He is saying the same thing. He was also sharing the nectar of the holy name with others. There are two different mentalities – the ant mentality and the dog mentality. Ants are expert at finding something sweet. When they come across something, they do not continue to eat it. They turn around and invite everyone – “ Please come. Let’s all go and eat.” This is very different from the dog mentality. He has a greed mentality. A very different attitude and approach to the ant. A dog had a piece of bread in his mouth. He saw his reflection in a pool of water. There he saw the dog with a piece of bread in his mouth. His greed mentality of wanting that piece of bread resulted in his losing the piece he had in his mouth. Vaisnavas are like ants.

That is their recognisable trait. They can identify with your unhappiness and have a solution for that.

I was reading about ISKCON Pune. Last year for the World Holy Name Festival they held kirtana simultaneously at the same time in108 towns. This year they want to do this simultaneous kirtana in 208 towns. This is amazing and wonderful. So what about Noida? You can start with at least 25 towns.

Reports:
In Noida as part of the World Holy Name Festival in the morning they are going to different parts with thousands of japa malas and getting them to chant at least one round One devotee who normally chants 16 rounds has chanted 37 rounds.

Revati Raman Prabhu from Thane is getting a group tighter and they will all chant 64 rounds.

Some devotees are making their way to Wada Farm to chant with them.
May the Lord shower His blessings on all the participants , chanters and listeners.

BE THE DISTRIBUTOR OF THE HOLY NAME

Yesterday we discussed Caitanya Mahaprabhu as He started chanting Hare Krishna. He took to the chanting and that chanting influenced Him very much.Of course, this happened very quickly as we have Krsna in Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He has technically gone mad as a result of the chanting of Hare Krsna – transcendental madness. We cannot and we should not imitate Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu. It is going to be a more gradual process for us. We will have to maintain patience and await for that kind of madness in our consciousness. It’s good to know whether this certain outcome of chanting, is possible or not possible. When one comes to the stage of becoming ecstatic by chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, it is great!

jagannatha swami nayana patagami bhavatu me

We pray like that to Sri Krsna Caitanya who did that to Jagannatha Swami, who are One and the same Lords. “May we see Your glances, Oh! Could we have Your darsana wherever we look?” This is the ultimate result of chanting with love. This is the desired goal.

If our words are fully Krishna conscious then by those kind of words we may be gifted with full development or evolution, that is Krishna consciousness. We become Krishna conscious by chanting …

We should have faith like that. Not to have faith in the chanting of the holy names of the Lord is offence number ten. What is that faith? It is that this chanting of Hare Krishna could make me fully Krishna conscious, allow me to take darsana of the Lord. His holy name could bring me back home, back to Krsna. This is certain. It is not exaggeration – harinama nikalpa. It is an offence when we don’t have faith like that Oh! Really! The holy name could do that? We should develop that kind of faith, that kind of understanding. You are welcome to chant the holy name with that
kind of understanding.

We Gaudiya Vaisnavas, including our leaders like the six Goswamis of Vrndavana were chanters of the holy name, but they never claimed that, ‘I am in Krsna now. I am with Him. I got Him. I caught Him.’ Mostly they expressed the feelings of separation from the Lord. ‘He Radhe! Vraja devike ca lalite he! Nanda suno kuttah’ Where are you! Where are you? Where are you? This is the question. So the more we chant, the more intensely we would be enquiring, wondering where is Krsna. Where could I see Him? When am I going to see Him? Why am I not seeing?

Caitanya Mahaprabhu also expressed those feelings. As He was chanting He was trying to find Krsna, look for Krsna. Sometimes he would ask Gadadhar, ‘Where is Krsna. I have to meet Him. Where is He?’ Then one time Gadadhar Pandit who is Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s very close associate and friend, they grew up together said to Caitanya Mahaprabhu ‘Oh! He is in Your heart.’ As soon as Nimai heard that the Lord is in His heart, He started scratching His chest and with His nails He was trying to dig deeper and open His heart like Hanuman had done. As He had heard the Lord is in the heart. ‘Oh really! The Lord is in my heart? Okay, I will look inside My heart.’ Then He started trying to open His heart and He was harming Himself and scratching and there was blood oozing from His chest.

Sacimata was not far from this scene, She was watching what her Nimai was doing, digging deeper into His chest and wanting to see the Lord in the heart. The way in which He was attempting to do so – scratching. She was certainly very concerned and worried. But then she also noticed what Gadadhar said next and that gave some relief to Sacimata. Gadadhar Pandit said ‘No! No! Not in the heart . Look, He is outside, He is there. Don’t look inside the heart .’ So

Gadadhar Pandit just distracted Caitanya Mahaprabhu from what He was attempting to do, trying to look for the Lord in His heart. In that way Nimai stopped scratching and harming Himself. Then He was looking outside some distance away for the Lord. Sacimata was very pleased with what Gadadhar Pandit did and saved Nimai from harming Himself. She appreciated Gadadhar Pandit, ‘Gadai I am very happy with your advice and counselling that you provided Nimai with. I would like you to always surround Nimai, my Nimai.Who knows when would be the next time He would be in trouble like this, harming Himself or be so unpredictable these days. So you Gadai, you Gadadhar please be always around my Nimai, please always protect Him.’ These are acintya or inconceivable pastimes of Gauranga Mahaprabhu, but the message that we should get from this is that chanting of the holy name is a process of reviving our dormant love for Krsna and it has happened in the past so many times. Many devotees have chanted Hare Krishna and they have developed love for the Lord and revived their Krishna Consciousness. This is possible so Caitanya Mahaprabhu is also setting that example. As I said, we cannot imitate and do everything as He did, that’s the difference between following in the footsteps and imitation.

Anukaran and Anusaran as we say in Hindi. But we should develop more and more faith in the process of chanting as we are awaiting the outcome which is Krsna prem, love of Godhead. Now we have little time left so we can turn our attention to the World Holy Name Festival, see what we could do or what you are doing or what you are not doing? We want to see if we can have a successful World Holy Name Festival. As the name says the World Holy Name festival is worldwide and not just a local, regional or national affair. It is an international or global event.

We want to see this festival held and celebrated in a grand manner everywhere worldwide. This is for the sake of an inspirational statement from Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu to get inspiration to spread the holy name all around. We know from Caitanya-caritamrita how Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu said one time “I am the only Gardener here ami ekla matra kalakar and look there are so many fruits hanging down from the trees everywhere. There is also a lot of demand out there, but I am the only Gardener so how many fruits could I take. How many fruits could I distribute alone? Help! Help! Help! Distributors wanted.So Mahaprabhu was saying that He wants distributors. I want more and more. Where are the devotees? The devotees should step forward and fill up the baskets with these fruits. These fruits are Krsna prem, fruits of love of Godhead and then go everywhere.

Do not worry about who deserves or where to distribute, just distribute profusely everywhere in abundance, flood the world with the fruits of love of Godhead

That is what he is talking about golokera prema dhana harinama sankirtana which He has brought down into this world and the Lord wants to see that this is distributed. We want you, all those listening to us, who are part of this conference and those who are not listening to us and are part of this conference are also able to listen to the appeal of Mahaprabhu, appealing to you all that you step forward and fill up the baskets or pockets or bags or lorries with the fruits of love of Godhead,the holy name and go everywhere and distribute the holy name . Nagar bhaje everywhere – nagar adi gram – in every town every village.

During the chanting session some of you were reporting, posting your comments. The report from Mauritius Padayatris is that HH Kadamba Kanana Swami Maharaj is personally heading the World Holy Name Festival there. There are reports from Dubai Shyamalangi Mataji is arranging disciple gatherings and they have to do 64 rounds session for one day – today or tomorrow. The weekly programs are on Fridays in Muslim countries. So everyone is going to have a festival with all the congregation and like that . I am getting reports from Muralimohan Prabhu from Ahmedabad.

He organised one day padayatra to inaugurate World Holy Name Festival and so many in Pune are going to some schools and getting the school children to participate in the World Holy Name Festival. Like that several reports are coming through. There are devotees in Russia. Through this conference they sent message to Saint Petersburg that they should organise a grand World Holy Name Festival there. Ram Leela Mataji from Solapur said that they are doing indoor chanting. My response is do outdoor chanting. Go in the streets and chant. Do nagar sankirtana. Like our Advaita Acarya who was not happy with Caitanya Mahaprabhu when He was doing indoor kirtana in Srivas Angan, Advaita Acarya wanted that the kirtana should be taken everywhere in the streets of Navadwip.

I am reading some encouraging reports, I am hearing and also getting emails during the day. Let’s stop here and get into action. Time to pack, get up and be substantial.

JARE DAKHO TARE KAHO KRISHNA-UPADESH!

This is the time for the World Holy Name Festival so we could announce our scores that today we had 521 participants. During this festival we want to hear some scores, results, number of different festivals conducted, japa sessions you conducted or so many people chanting because of your arrangements. So we are reporting from this session there are 527 participants.

In Lord Caitanyas life and teachings, he has taught and shared His realisations that the chanting of Hare Krishna Hare Krishna / Krishna Krishna Hare Hare / Hare Rama Hare Rama / Rama Rama Hare Hare / transformed his life. He was no longer the same person as soon as he took up the chanting. As He took to the chanting after being initiated by Isvara Puri in Gaya, when He returned to Navadvipa, Mayapur, He was a completely changed person, upside down and inside out. He was changed. No one could recognise that He is the same Nimai Pandit. He does not even look like Nimai Pandit. Caitanya Mahaprabhu gave the credit to Hare Krishna maha-mantra.

All the changes in Him had taken place because of the chanting of Hare Krishna maha-mantra. So He was exhibiting all the symptoms to the extent that by seeing Him all the people around use to say Oh! Nimai has gone mad!

So then Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu went back to his Guru Maharaja asking, ‘Kiba mantra dila gosai kiba Tara Bal, japite japite mantra karil pagal’ Oh!dear Guru Maharaja, my Guru Maharaja, (doesn’t have to say ‘dear’ to an honorable person). He asked what kind of mantra have you given? There is so much power in this! As I started chanting I have gone mad. I laugh, I cry and I roll on the ground, I become stunned and this happens and that happens. And I know that this maha-mantra has done this. So what a powerful mantra it is! Caitanya Mahaprabhu was also talking to devotees, Gadadhar Pandit and Mukunda Datta. Lord was saying to them,’ I wasted my lifetime. I wasn’t chanting like you. I wasn’t a devotee like you. From your very birth you are chanting. You are dancing and you are happy realizing this
mellows of devotion’.

hari hari! biphale janama gonainu
manusya-janama paiya, radha-krsna na bhajiya
janiya suniya bisa khainu

Translation:

O Lord Hari I have spent my life uselessly. Having obtained a human birth and having net worshiped Radha and Krsna, I have knowingly drunk poison.(Dainya Bodhika Song 2 (Ista Deve Vijnapti) Narottama Dasa Thakura He was expressing sentiments like that. I remained busy in sastra and debates, teaching and learning the scriptures, lot of Vidyarjan, but I wasted My time. Why did I not take this chanting of Hare Krishna maha-mantra from early age childhood? He was having such thoughts and was sharing them with the devotees. So with this kind of light and expression Caitanya Mahaprabhu is expressing the glories of the holy name. He is establishing harer nama eva kevalam principal.

sambhavami yuge yuge (BG 4.8)

Lord has appeared to establish the Dharma for this age of Kali. We are seeing how Caitanya Mahaprabhu is establishing the accomplishment of the glories of the holy name, and Dharma for this age of Kali. We all have to chant. Specially this part is also sadhana. This is one way of chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna /Krishna Krishna Hare Hare /Hare Rama Hare Rama /Rama Rama Hare Hare.

We could say that this is ‘Charity begins at home’. Charity begins with you! It begins with yourself. Mahaprabhu came with the gift of this Harinama and we should be giving this gift to our self. That is what we do when we do our Japa. We are drinking, gifting this holy name to our self and getting benefited. We are getting nourished and flourished as we do this. So certainly we have to do this. At the same time, it is certainly the will and wish of the Lord that we all chant. Those who hear the glories of the holy name understand harer nama eva kevalam. We should be chanting. But we should not be happy only with that. Okay, I am chanting, I am happy. Chant and be happy! But Mahaprabhu
did not want us only to be happy. Mahaprabhu is expecting and instructing all the chanters of the holy name, all those who are following him, all those who have taken up the chanting of the maha-mantra, Mahaprabhu’s instructions all those are:

yare dekha, tare kaha ‘krsna’-upadesa
amara ajnaya guru hana tara’ ei desa

Translation
“Instruct everyone to follow the orders of Lord Sri Krsna as they are given in the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. In this way become a spiritual master and try to liberate everyone in this land.” (CC Madhya 7.128)

This is the instruction of Mahaprabhu, Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is our Prabhu, prabhavashali, he is our master. So this is His order- yare dekha, tare kaha ‘krsna’-upadesaamara ajnaya guru hana tara’ ei desa. Srila Prabhupada said to me “yare dekha, tare kaha ‘krsna’-upadesa” when Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, yare dekha, tare kaha ‘krsna’-upadesa, that includes Hare Krishna updesa also.

Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s other famous statement, instruction or we could say desire is one which Srila Prabhupada would repeat again and again and again is

bharata-bhumite haila manusya janma yara
janma sarthaka kari’ kara para-upakara

Translation:
“One who has taken his birth as a human being in the land of India [Bharata-varsa] should make his life successful and work for the benefit of all other people. (CC Adi lila 9.41)

If you have taken birth in Bharat varsa, and you wish to make your life perfect, you have to accomplish this, kara para-upkara. Do para-upkara. Do something good for others. Bahujana hitay bahujana sukhay. Do something for the benefit of others. Give charity, be charitable, magnanimous. Give out! So that is para-upkara which Mahaprabhu wants us to do. I will take some time to explain this. There are many devotees from overseas. They think , Oh! Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, “bharata-bhumite haila…… but I was not born in India! I am not Bharatvasi! I am Mauritius vasi or Russia vasi or America vasi. I am from this sthan that sthan, Pakistan, Kazakistan and Australia – Astra sthan. Sastra and astras were kept for safety in the Australian continent. All followers of Gauranga Mahaprabhu wherever they are, they are Bharat vasis. There janma is bharata-bhumite haila. One time I was talking with Ekalavya Prabhuji about this and he said, “I am Bharat vasi because I was initiated in India. I took birth in India. Although I was born in America but my real birth, my spiritual birth was in India.” Then we could say that it doesn’t matter wherever you were initiated, but as you were connected to this parampara , that’s it. From that time onwards you cease to be an American, Australian or Canadian and your birth from there onwards is bharatvasi. This whole planet was Bharatvarsh – India. So this is the instruction of Caitanya Mahaprabhu to all of His followers regardless of their birth, from whichever country or continent.

So this para-upkara business is the propagation of the holy name. We would like to tell all those listeners, participants of this conference and those listening, that it is the time to do para-upkara. Be charitable. Give this gift of the holy name to others. Be charitable! So many things you could do, that we discussed, what the World Holy Name Festival organisers are expecting, about how to celebrate this holy name festival. So understand that, give out the holy name, distribute the holy name.

Just a few minutes ago I was observing a wonderful thing from Noida. Devotees have set up a booth. So many walkers and passersby were made
to sit down and they were chanting. That was a very beautiful scene to watch as I am seeing from the temple. I saw those devotees from Noida Temple preaching and doing para-upkara. Are you not seeing that the Lord is watching this? Do you think Gaurang is not watching or Radha Govind is not seeing the activities in that booth in the park? If I, who is just a tiny being am pleased by that then how much more pleased the Lord must be when He witnesses us doing this charitable work of spreading the holy name. So stay busy following Mahaprabhu order of chanting Hare Krishna and giving Hare Krishna to others. He ordered Haridas Thakur and Nityananda Prabhu,

suno suno nityananda, suno haridas sarvatra amar ajna koroho prakas prati
ghare ghare giya koro ei bhiksa bolo `krsna’, bhajo krsna, koro krsna-siksa

Listen Nityananda, listen Haridas, This is My order. If you go from door to door and beg the people to take up this instruction of Mine, they should chant the name of Krsna, bolo Krsna bhajo Krsna, they should worship the Supreme personality of Godhead Krsna, koro Krsna siksa and they should read the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, the books which contain the teachings of Lord Krsna.

When this instruction was received from Mahaprabhu, Nithyananda Prabhu and Haridas Thakur were on the job. They decided the target, Yes ! Yes! We want this Jagai and Madhai to chant. They made various attempts. One attempt was not successful , another attempt was also not successful, third attempt they were trying. They thought if personalities like Jagai and Madhai are influenced by chanting of maha-mantra, if they could be transformed, then this news will become the talk of the town. And even now 500 years after that this morning also as I am talking to you about them . It is the talk of the town then. Nityananda Prabhu and Haridas Thakur made it big news., Persons like Jagai and Madhai , as soon as they took up the process of the chanting of maha-mantra, they were changed persons. That’s what happened.

Nityananda Prabhu and Haridas Thakur were thinking if this could be accomplished, if Jagai and Madhai could take up to the chanting , then you
know, the whole world will realise how great is Gauranga. Glories of Gauranga will spread, and with that glories of the holy name will also be
broadcasted far and wide. So they made them the target. They were successful. That was a demonstration of the power of the holy name and
glories of Gauranga.

We should also be in that spirit like Nityananda Prabhu and Haridas Thakur. We want to glorify the holy name. Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu ki Jay! That is why they were out there on the mission of spreading the holy name. So stay busy, get more and more devotees to chanting together. Make efforts for that yare dekha, tare kaha ‘krsna’-upadesa amara ajnaya guru hana tara’ ei desa That desa could be your town, that desa could be your colony, country , continent. See how big a circle you can form. Spread the glory of Gauranga , holy name and Prabhupad. Let the world know Prabhupada was the ambassador of the holy name. He gave the gift of holy name to the whole world.

WORLD HOLY NAME FESTIVAL

Hare Krishna! Good Morning!
Well, I am back, I think I had never left also. There are 400 participants The number has certainly dropped. I see Senapati bhakta. We have Dhira Prashant Prabhu with us 10,000 miles away chanting. I think the number has dropped, so, not a good sign. We had reached 700 and now it is so low. Some of you, those who are chanting are there and those who used to be there are not here now.

I was up to chanting and you hearing, sometimes there was live and some of you were chanting with me and may be the rest of the times it was not live, maybe you were hearing recorded Japa and Japa talk. But regardless of whether there is live or recorded, we were expecting you to continue to chant. And if I am not there, devotees around the world are chanting with you. All over India is chanting with you. The power of association is there that way, so many together chanting. Japa conference is the power association.

As I said I am back in India. I arrived just today, early yesterday morning, namely 17 September and it was also the day in 1965 that Prabhupada had reached America. Prabhupada was in America on 17 September 1965. 17 September, yesterday was the beginning of a global festival called the World Holy Name Festival. I also kind of returned on the 17th to India to inaugurate that festival of the holy name. We would like you all to be part of this World Holy Name Festival from 17 to 24 September wherever you are – whichever continent, country. temple, Bhakti Vriksa. We want you all to actively participate in this World Holy Name Festival.

We have been celebrating this festival every year for the past twenty years. We want more promotion and more participation in this festival this time. I would like you to make sure that your continent, your country, your temple authorities are aware and awake – Gaurachanda bole. Gaurachanda is calling. We want to celebrate the World Holy Name Festival and I want you to remind your temple authorities about this World Holy Name Festival.

This is a GBC initiative. This is one of the programs the GBC wants to see spread. The GBC had asked me to be the coordinator of this event and I want you to assist me to make this World Holy Name Festival a grand success. We want to let the world know that Srila Prabhupada was the Ambassador of the holy name. Srila Prabhupada gave the gift of the holy name to the whole world so we want to remember Srila Prabhupada for this contribution. We would like to be grateful for what Srila Prabhupada has done for the whole world by giving this wealth of the gift of the holy name.

This holy name is the true wealth. You are just saying it, but I wonder if you realise that this is something very, very valuable. Your consciousness could get enriched by chanting, hearing and assimilating this Hare Krishna mahamantra. With great pride Srila Prabhupada preached and enriched the souls from the Western world. Prabhupada returned to India and he declared that he had made hippies into ‘happies’. This was Srila Prabhupada’s contribution – making hippies happies. How did Srila Prabhupada do this? He just asked them to chant the holy name and be happy. That was the exact same message to the world. If you wish to be happy, then there is only one way:

harer nama harer nama harer namaiva kevalam
kalau nasty eva nasty eva nasty eva gatir anyatha

In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy, the only means of deliverance is the chanting of the holy name of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way.” [Adi 17.21]

Time and time again I say that in order to be happy you have to be wealthy. It is an illusion that if you make more money, you will be happy and if you want to be happier, you have to make more money. It is a fact that you need wealth to be happy. Unfortunately the world does not realise what kind of wealth could make you happy. There is the mundane rupees, dollars, rubles which if acquired in abundance will make you happy. This is a big misunderstanding. You will have to realise what kind of wealth will make you happy. You have to come to the conclusion that spiritual wealth will make you happy. This spiritual wealth is Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna…… It is guaranteed that the more you acquire this wealth, the happier you will be. The rest of the world begins acquiring wealth at 9, 10 ,11 am., but the Hare Krishna devotees begin making money much earlier:Early to bed and early to rise, makes one healthy, wealthy and wise.

The wise thing that the Hare Krishna devotees do, is that they wake up early. It is quiet and peaceful in the early morning hours and the air is fresh. This gives you good health. You become wealthy because you start acquiring genuine, eternal wealth. It remains your property forever and remains with you as your soul, unlike whatever other mundane wealth you acquire. Now is the time for the World Holy Name Festival. We talk about Harinama Mahatmya, the glories of the holy name. Hare Krishna chanting is the real wealth as Gauranga Mahaprabhu and our acaryas have said. During this festival which lasts for one week or so, you should find out more about this festival from our website –www.worldholyname.org

On this website you will find different things which you could do during this festival. One part of this festival is that you have to take part, chant, hear and relish the holy name. The other part is that we want to share the sweetness of the holy name with as many others as possible. so it’s time for Aachar and Prachar so it’s time for chanting and propagation of chanting There is a practice of chanting and propagation of chanting.

Some World Holy Name Festival activities:

All the talks – morning Bhagavatam and evening Gita – should be harinama centred. Japathon -Japathon, chanting lots of rounds, yesterday I met some devotees and they are chanting 64 rounds as part of this festival. Its time for Japathon ,Japa Marathon and I think you could also submit your scores / chant extra rounds and submit your scores into the global harinama bank and let the world know.

Some Initiatives:

Devotees from Noida are going to different parks catching the morning walkers and getting them to chant one round at least. The temples in the NCR(National Capital Region) are getting together on Sunday for a Maha Nagar Sankirtana waking up Delhi, Noida and surrounding area. They are expecting 10 thousand devotees. So why not you? Your temple? I will also be there.

The devotees from the Noida temple are going on harinama twice daily – morning and evening. * Noida devotees are starting a 15 day Padayatra on the 29 September from ISKCON Noida to ISKCON Vrindavana. The sky is the limit to how much you could do. We would like you to be the
doer, especially participating in this festival. Get the devotee community, congregation fully involved in the next five to six days.
Report back to us by sending us your reports (temple wise or group wise) of every activity that was undertaken as part of this World Holy Name Festival. You do it, send it to us and we will share it with the whole world.

World Holy Name Festival Ki Jai

You could do 24 hours kirtan or 12 hours kirtan or morning mangala Arti to sandhya Aarti, shayan aarti, non stop kirtana , akhanda naam kirtan in the temple, on some occasion of the temple. You could do one day pada yatra in your town. Kirtan melas you could organise, you could have Japa retreat , get together and japa retreat for improving japa. As I said ,there is no limit, what or how much you could do sky is the limit. So, these many and many more could be done and we would like you to be the doer not just listener and just be the witness, be actually participating and specially get the devotee community, the congregation, your temple fully involved and dedicated to World Holy name festival for these five six days. And then we would like you to report back to us, all that you did: all the rounds you chanted or Hari Naams organised , one day pad yatras whatever, non stop kirtans are organised. So, at the end of this festival each one of you or it can be temple wise reports or group wise reports we would like to hear and share those with the world, what you did , you do it and you report back to us whatever our pleasure .

So, we have to revive the number of participants of this conference, this is also one project in this World Holy Name Festival, we can get back to our previous good scores 500s, 600s, 700 participants spread the word around remind others in your temple or the colony or association and get our numbers up And we could spend some time in the following sessions to hear, some scores or some innovative ideas, how we could or how you are celebrating this World Holy Name festival. You could be the part of this morning japa talk or japa time, for interactive response, what you are doing, what different things could be done, you have some exceptional ideas please share us.

TAKE SHELTER OF THE DEVOTEE OF THE LORD

I have been on tour of the Western countries and we had gone to America , Europe and Russia.

kirata-hunandhra-pulinda-pulkasa
abhira-sumbha yavanah khasadayah
ye 'nye ca papa yad-apasrayasrayah
sudhyanti tasmai prabhavisnave namah

I was reading this a few days ago during the flight. I came across an initiation class by Srila Prabhupada in 1968 somewhere in America. That time Jayapataka Dasa who was not a swami that time was getting initiated. During that initiation lecture Prabhupada quoted this verse. I was surprised as wealth could be the reason why Prabhupada was saying this while giving initiation in America. kirata-hunandhra-pulinda-pulkasa …. The reason could be that some must have taken initiation who were from one of these countries. Then Prabhupada quoted this verse from Srimad-Bhagavatam, that refers to Mahabharata. It explains this is a kirata, the country is mentioned, far beyond Bihar and some countries from India also, Western countries. You know India is also included in chota Nagpur from Central India, that is Kirata, and Andhra is in India. Then hunandhra, that is Russia that is being mentioned. Then there is Germany and China. These countries are also mentioned in the Bhishma-parva of Mahabharata.

Mahabharata is the history of Greater India. That time the whole world was Bharat and the names mentioned were the countries or provinces spread all over the world. The reason why Prabhupada had quoted that verse during that initiation ceremony was that in this verse after mentioning the different countries, the Yavanas or Muslims, mlecchas I mean these races are the lower classes, lower than the sudras, in comparison . These are Kirata and Hunan, Andhra and Pulinda and Pulkasa , Yavanas and Khasad also. They are sudras, but Bhagavatam says wherever you are from, no matter how low class you are, you should take shelter of the devotees of the Lord. One who has taken shelter of the
Lord that is a devotee and if you take shelter of the devotee, such a devotee who has always taken shelter of the Lord then suddyanti – you will be purified. By prabha visnave namaha. Visnu is addressed here as Prabha-Visnu which means powerful Visnu. The Lord is powerful. You should come in contact with devotees of the powerful Lord, then that devotee will bring you to the shelter of Lord’s lotus feet. Then the devotees will explain also that,

sarva-dharman parityajya
mam ekam saranam vraja
aham tvam sarva-papebhyo
moksayisyami ma sucah

Translation:
Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.( BG. 18.66) Lord has made that promise if one takes shelter of the devotees of the Lord. That's why Prabhupada was also travelling fourteen times around the world, to this Hunan and Andhra also, to all these countries around the world, and people there were taking shelter of Prabhupada. They got some alternative. They came in contact with Srila Prabhupada, and Prabhupada presented Bhagavat-gita As It Is to them.

Then he had explained this verse, as it is. We have a variety of religions or so called obligations, but surrender unto Krsna – mam ekam saranam vraja. And if you do that what does Krsna say, aham tvam sarva papebhyo moksayisyami ma sucah. Surrender is complete when we do sarva-dharman parityajya. Not that you have given up some false dharmas, only so called dharmas, but all dharmas. Just take note of the word sarva, Lord has said, sarva- dharman parityajya and if you do that, if you leave all varieties of religions, then

aham tvam sarva papebhyo.
sarva-dharman parityajya.
sarva-papebhyo moksayishyami ma sucah.

Then you will become free from reactions, of all the sins that you have committed. So this Bhagavatam verse does say this. Srila Prabhupada explained not just sinful people of this country and that verse of Kirata, Pulinda ye anye ca papaha….. and if there are any others which are not mentioned in this verse they also, everybody. There may be some more sinful people of some other country , which are not mentioned in this verse, they also will get purified.

vimuchayate nama tasmai, vishnave prabha namah

Srila Prabhupada was preaching on the strength of this verse, which strongly recommends to one and all to take shelter of devotees of the Lord. Devotees who are like acarya, siksa Gurus, diksa Gurus, Vartma pradarsaka gurus who take us to the siksa Gurus, which in turn introduces us to diksa Gurus. Diksa Gurus come in the parampara of the acaryas and connect us to that parampara. So it was proper that Srila Prabhupada was quoting this verse during the initiation ceremony of Jaypataka Prabhu. He was justifying initiation to someone, who was not born in a
Brahmin family, or ksatriya family. Prabhupada was also mentioning that according to the vedic vidhi, this initiation cannot take place. Yena sruti gochara ha. striyo vaisya tatha sudraha tryo na sruti gocharaha. They cannot be given initiation. We don't give this mantras to women, vaisya or sudras. But there is vaidik vidhi and there is Bhagavata vidhi. We follow the Bhagavata vidhi. Pancaratra. Pancaratiki
vidhi vina bhakti utpat eva ucchyate. So we follow Bhagavata vidhi. We follow Pancharatiki vidhi. But if we stick only to Vedic vidhi, then we cannot extend this initiation. And Prabhupada was also criticised by brahmins as he was giving initiation to Yavanas. He was giving them sannyasa. This all is nishiddha, according to the vedic vidhi. But we follow Bhagavata vidhi or pancaratra vidhi, which Srila Prabhupada preached all over the world. That preaching is continued.

Caitanya Mahaprabhu predicted that this holy name will reach every town and village. He predicted pritvite ace yay nagaradi gram sarvatra prachar hoibe more nama. So this was forecasted by Caitanya Mahaprabhu and Prabhupada worked for that. Till now preaching is going on. First they came in contact with Srila Prabhupada and then they came into contact with the holy name. So this is brahmande bhramite kon bhagyawan jiva guru krsna prasade pay bhaktilata bija. In this world, so many souls are becoming bhagyawan, fortunate as Prabhupada was bringing them in contact with devotees of Krsna.

These devotees are then , inspiring the souls, introducing them to holy name Bhagavat-gita and Bhagavatam. Introducing them to the Deities, Deity form of the Lord. Introducing them to Mayapur Vrndavan dhams, and introducing them to so many more devotees of Lord. Krsna's servants, Krishna's eternal associates.

Gauranga Mahaprabhu's associates. So this way everything is going on as explained in the Bhagavatam. 'Books are the basis', Bhagavatam is the basis, and this is the foundation. Bhagavatam teaches taking shelter of the devotees. These devotees will explain you how to take shelter of Krsna. And when they come in contact with the powerful Lord then – sudhyanti. The holy name is also powerful.

Namnam Kari bahudha nija sarva shaktis Lord has introduced all His energies into this holy name. Poorna sudha nithya mukta abhinavat Nama Namino. Take shelter of the holy name of the Lord as there is no difference between nama and nami. They are one.

So become Krishna conscious and make your life happy by taking shelter of the Harinama, and go back to Krsna.

Tirupati

This morning the number of participants are big but we have had better figures when we crossed the 600 mark. We would like it to keep rising. Let us remind others, especially family members to join the japa conference. The face book page “Let’s chant together” is also there for you to visit.

I am not sure if Bhakta Ganesh from Pandharpur is getting others to chant with him but he has taken a vow to chant 1200 rounds during this month. Each day he will increase his rounds to reach this target. He will also complete a reading of
Bhagavad Gita slokas and read Krsna Book daily, and also offer lamps daily to Damodar.

Devarsi Narada Dasa from Croatia has joined us. He is offering lamps to Damodara. We are happy to see Prabhuji all the way from Croatia, Europe chanting with us. Manasi Gaur Mataji from Greater Noida says that she is drowning in the ocean of nectar. When I read this message I was reminded of the third verse from the Damodarastakam:

itīdṛk sva-līlābhir ānanda-kuṇḍe
sva-ghoṣam nimajjantam ākhyāpayantam
tadīyeṣita-jñeṣu bhaktair jitatvam
punaḥ prematas tam śatāvṛtti vande

Those superexcellent pastimes of Lord Krsna's babyhood drowned the inhabitants of Gokula in pools of ecstasy. To the devotees who are attracted only to His majestic aspect of Narayana in Vaikuntha, the Lord herein reveals: “I am conquered and overwhelmed by pure loving devotion.” To the Supreme Lord, Damodara, my obeisances hundreds and hundreds of times.

During this pastime, the Lord drowns the Vraja vasis in the ocean of nectar, through His nectarian pastimes. Manasi is drowning in happiness also because she managed to get 60 old and new people to offer lamps to Damodara. It is my wish
that she keeps up with the good work.

Jaya Pancali Mataji from Pune regrets that she could not join the Parikrama or go to Vrndavan. This does not matter because she is in Pune, attending mangala arati, offering lamps to Damodara daily and reading Vraja-mandala Darsana, a chapter a day. She also reports that her parents arranged a programme in Jalgaon village where 300 attended that programme and offered lamps.

Paramatma Prabhu also noted about the lamp offering programme in Jalgaon but he has not given a report from Nagpur. We are yet to hear from him and will welcome that feedback.

Is there any news from Vrndavan or the Parikrama? We have managed to get the 30 days timetable. Today the devotees would have left Krishna-Balaram Mandir after mangala-arati, some 14 minutes ago. They normally leave the camp around 6 a.m. and they are heading to Bhataronda, then towards Akrura-ghata. They will stop for breakfast at the Birla Mandira after which they will walk through heavy traffic to Krsna-Janmasthana, the birthplace of Krsna where He appeared five thousand years ago.

I am missing Vrndavan and Vraja-mandala Parikrama. Because of the GBC meeting in Tirupati, I am separated from Vrndavan, but I am always thinking of Vrndavan and all the devotees who are on parikrama. The Padayatra from Noida to Vrindavan has just been completed. The devotees have been walking for two weeks from Noida to Vrndavan. The good news is that during this period, they distributed 4000 books. These figures will be very pleasing to Srila Prabhupada. Yesterday in Noida, there were 300 devotees who offered lamps at the temple.

Param Karuna Prabhu and Bhaktiniddhi from Nagpur have been inspired by Bhakta Ganesh and have pledged to chant 2100 japa during the month of Kartik. Maha Laksmi devi dasi got 75 people to offer lamps – I am not sure where she is from.
This is a great initiative.

So this is a wonderful season of Kartik especially for devotional practice and to make lots of profits. If it is a rainy season, selling umbrellas would be profitable. This month of Kartik is the best season for performing service especially hearing and chanting, reading books like Srimad-Bhagavatam, Vraja-mandala Darsana, and Krsna book. The month of Kartik is popular with Gaudiya Vaisnavas for accumulating profits. So we should take full advantage of this favourable time of Kartik. Of course distributing Srila Prabhupada’s books should be increased. You should buy a copy of Vraja-mandala Darsana if you do not have a copy. It is a season for reading and distribution of prasada. No spiritual function is complete without distribution of prasada. Share prasada with others. Invite your family and friends as Jaya Pancali Mataji’s parents have done with 300 devotees who got together his contacts and offered lamps. You could plan programmes at the various temples.

Invite the devotees to come in big numbers everyday. Let them be blessed by Damodara.

Sanathan Goswami’s Hari-bhakti Vilasa recognised this celebration and prescribes the offering of lamps during this period of Kartik. Here it is said that the offering of lamps will attract Lord Damodar. You become a recipient of the mercy of Karuna sindhu, Deena Bandhu Damodar during this month.

"In the month of Kartika one should worship Lord Damodara and daily recite the prayer known as Damodarashtaka, which has been spoken by the sage Satyavrata and which attracts Lord Damodara." (Sri Hari-bhakti-vilasa 2.16.198).
This is an amazing Damodarastakam. This astakam was spoken by Satyavrata Muni in a conversation with Narada Muni and Saunaka Rishi and can be found in the Padma Purana of Krishna Dvaipayana Vyasa

namāmīśvaram sac-cid-ānanda-rūpam
lasat-kuṇḍalam gokule bhrājamanam
yaśodā-bhiyolūkhalād dhāvamānam
parāmṛṣṭam atyantato drutya gopyā

To the supreme controller, who possesses an eternal form of blissful knowledge, whose glistening earrings swing to and fro, who manifested Himself in Gokula, who stole the butter that the gopis kept hanging from the rafters of their storerooms and who then quickly jumped up and ran in retreat in fear of Mother Yasoda but was ultimately caught – to that Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, I offer my humble obeisances. (Verse 1).

This is a very special verse of pure devotion and humility where the devotee begs for the mercy of Damodara. The verse is replete with devotion and we are encouraged to look at the deeper meaning of this verse.

So Satyavrata Muni is remembering this pastime of Damodara and the day when the Lord stole butter in Nanada Bhavan within a particular pastime (Makan Chor). He quickly mentions that the Lord is wearing earrings and He is moving quickly and the earrings are dangling and dazzling as He runs away from Yasoda. You will have to read in greater detail about this in the 10th Canto, Chapter 8 of Srimad-Bhagavatam. Sukadev Goswami describes this pastime and offers deeper insight into this pastime.

Satyavrata Muni says that Krsna is stealing and eating butter and also distributing to the monkeys. Mother Yasoda is following him with a stick in hand as he tries to escape. He jumps down from the mortar and runs away from His mother. When Yasoda managed to catch Him, Krsna started trembling and crying with fear. His two lotus hands were wiping away the tears and he was full of fear because he was caught and did know what kind of punishment was imminent. He is taking heavy breaths and His body and lips are trembling. At the same time Satyavrata Muni sees the three marks on Krsna’s neck that demonstrated the speciality of Krsna’s form.

There is a locket around His neck which was moving, dangling and shaking as Krsna’s body was trembling because of the immense fear. Yasoda was able to catch hold of Him and was able to bind Him to the mortar. This is only possible because of her love and devotion for her darling Damodara that she was able to deal with Him accordingly.

rudantam muhur netra-yugmam mṛjantam
karāmbhoja-yugmena sātańka-netram
muhuḥ śvāsa-kampa-trirekhāńka-kaṇṭha-
sthita-graivam dāmodaram bhakti-baddham

Upon seeing His mother's whipping stick, He cried and rubbed His eyes again and again with His two lotus hands. His eyes were fearful and His breathing quick, and as Mother Yasoda bound His belly with ropes, He shivered in fright and His pearl necklace shook. To this Supreme Lord, Sri Damodara, I offer my humble obeisances. Satyavrata Muni concludes this second verse of this pastime by offering the third verse:

itīdṛk sva-līlābhir ānanda-kuṇḍe
sva-ghoṣam nimajjantam ākhyāpayantam
tadīyeṣita-jñeṣu bhaktair jitatvam
punaḥ prematas tam śatāvṛtti vande

Those superexcellent pastimes of Lord Krishna's babyhood drowned the inhabitants of Gokula in pools of ecstasy. To the devotees who are attracted only to His majestic aspect of Narayana in Vaikuntha, the Lord herein reveals: “I am conquered and overwhelmed by pure loving devotion.” To the Supreme Lord, Damodara, my obeisances hundreds and hundreds of times.

By the performance of this lila the Lord is filling the kundas (lakes) with anand, and all the residents of Vrndavan and associates are drowning in the nectar of His pastimes.

SOUL IS THE CHANTER

We are conducting this japa conference from Ekachakra Gram Dhama. This is in Russia. This is for the information of all those who are with us on the conference. We have devotees from all over the world right now chanting with us. The name of this conference is,’Let’s chant together'. We have devotees from Surat in India. Gaur Krishna, Gaur Kishore Das, Padmavati from Holland is chanting, Madhavi Gopi from Thane Mumbai, Bombay is chanting with us. Vaibhav from Pune.

Pune you know and like that Devahuti is chanting with us. Like that we have devotees from different places. Someone from New York is chanting, Dhira Govinda is from New York, New Jersey is chanting with us, Dr. Shyamsundar Sharma from Nagpur, India is chanting with us. Dhira Prasanta from Australia is chanting with us. And like that we have some thousand devotees chanting with us. We chanters are benefited by the power of the global association of chanters.

Radhe Gopal is from America. There are devotees from Mauritius with us and from Dubai. So this is a humble attempt in service of the holy name and service of the chanters.

We chant together and then we talk a little bit about the chanting. Jiva Jago. We also remind sleeping souls to please wake up. Lord Gauranga is calling as we say Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna. Gaura is calling us to get up, time to wake up. In a fully wakeful state only we could chant the holy name of the Lord attentively. So the let’s chant together japa conference on zoom is like a daily japa retreat. You know devotees around the world organise Japa Retreats. Like our Sacinandana Swami Maharaja and so many others who organise japa retreats.

They go to some location like Barsana or somewhere. They gather together for a week or so and they conduct japa retreats with the aim on how to chant better, how to improve our chanting or how to do attentive chanting. We do that on a daily basis here on the japa conference. We chant together on our conference and then we talk, give some hints, some tips, some reminders, do this during chanting, do that during chanting. Don't do this during chanting or even something that you should be doing to prepare yourself for chanting. So everyday we talk.

Today our chanting session is kind of sandwiched between the appearance day of Bhakti Vinoda Thakurwhich is just ending and the disappearance day of Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur which is just beginning. We are in the middle. So naturally the day reminds of Srila Bhakti Vinoda Thakur. All glories to him. Or Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur. There are devotees who before they begin chanting they offer their prayers to Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur to give all them inspiration that is needed to chant. Gauranga himself declared Haridas Thakur as Namacarya Haridas Thakur. Lord made him Acarya of Nama, Acarya of the holy name. Acarya is that person who teaches by his own example. If anyone amongst Caitanya Mahaprabhu's associates or representing his parampara who inspires the whole world like anything. Then we have to accept that person is Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur. He chanted three hundred thousand names daily.

People were trying to stop him from chanting, ‘Stop chanting otherwise we will beat you or we kill you.’ Regardless of all the opposition and threatening beating, he went on chanting. He said, ”You may beat me or cut me into khanda khanda. He used the word khanda khanda. You may cut my body into pieces still I'll not stop chanting." I was thinking when I remembered this statement of Haridas Thakur. He is also trying to say that it is not that his body is chanting. It is his soul that is chanting.

The soul cannot be cut into pieces. The soul cannot be burnt with fire. So Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur's soul is chanting and in no way can that soul be beaten or dried off or killed or burnt. No force, no element, no party in this world could stop his chanting. The chanter of the holy name is the soul. We should realize who the chanter of the holy name is? Who is chanting? Who is speaking? Today's speaker is! What is that company, that company speaker is today morning's speaker. Is it or is that the speaker or one who is speaking in the mike is the speaker. One who is
actually speaking in the mike is the actual speaker not that one in the speaker box.

Similarly our mouth is the speaker. A mouth cannot speak, it's like that compared with that speaker box. One who is speaking in the microphone is the soul. The soul is speaking, chanting and like that the body cannot function without the presence of the soul . Who is hearing? Is the ear hearing?

The soul is hearing, hearing and chanting is done by the soul and remembrance of course. The body cannot remember.It is dead matter . This matter at some point through some ways enters into the body. We eat and the body is built. So Namacarya Srila Haridas Thakur as he was chanting and no matter what opposition there was, what attempts were made to stop his chanting, he did not respond to that. He kept on chanting.

During old age he did not chant his prescribed rounds and Mahaprabhu always sent mahaprasada to Haridas Thakur's Siddha Bakul. Siddha Bakul. Bakul is a tree. The Lord was trying to take care of Haridas Thakur. He was not taking care of himself. Mahaprabhu took Jagannatha Swami's Toothbrush, Jagannatha Swami when he gets up he brushes his teeth. It's a branch of the Bakul tree with which he rubs. So one day Mahaprabhu came with that Bakul branch. And he planted that where Haridas Thakur used to stay and that grew into a nice shady tree. Otherwise Haridas Thakur went on with his chanting all day long under the scorching heat of the sun.

He was old and Gauranga was caring for him. And now under the shade of the tree Haridas Thakur was chanting. Mahaprabhu sent Jagannatha mahaprasada for him. Haridas Thakur said refused as he had not finished his prescribed number of rounds. How could he eat? Every time Caitanya Mahaprabhu would visit him. As you chant you are welcoming the Lord.

The Lord appears to give his darsana. This is the part of the Lila. The Lord is walking towards Haridas Thakur. If You take one step towards the Lord , as we chant Hare Krishna we are trying to get closer to the Lord. Lord is more eager to see us when we are eager to see Him. As we take the initiative, the Lord is taking a thousand steps towards us. Chanting will be perfected when we chant without offences. Then our chanting will be prayerful sudha nama, pure name will appear and the Lord as He is will be revealed unto us. This is yoga, Bhakti yoga or japa yoga. We are also yogis.

Since we chant we could be called japa yogis. Yoga means to link or to unite so with the help of chanting we are trying to connect with the Lord, unite with the Lord. We see in the life of Namacarya Haridas Thakur. This is what happened as he was chanting and chanting and chanting and chanting and not just quantity wise chanting which is kirtaniya sada hari. We should chant all the time but it's more about quantity. Namacarya Haridas Thakur was known for both his quantity and quality chanting.

KRSNA’S NAME IS NON-DIFFERENT FROM HIS FORM

Go closer to the Lord. Be with the Lord. He is coming. When you follow yam niyam,asan pranayam pratyahar dhyan dharna, samadhi you are going higher and higher and getting closer and closer. Wherever we go, we have to do to the right
things at all these different levels. At every step we have to watch out whether we are doing it correctly. We are endeavouring all the time to do it right. Day after day when we are endeavouring, then Krsna will give us intelligence.

tesam satata-yuktanam
bhajatam priti-purvakam
dadami buddhi-yogam tam
yena mam upayanti te

Translation: 
To those who are constantly devoted to serving Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me. (BG10.10) So that upayanti will come closer. That divine intelligence in right, intelligent direction and with the power of discrimination to reveal Krsna.

caksu-dan dilo jei, janme janme prabhu sei,
divya jnan hrde prokasito
prema-bhakti jaha hoite, avidya vinasa jate,
vede gay jahara carito

He opens my darkened eyes and fills my heart with transcendental knowledge. He is my Lord birth after birth. From him ecstatic prema emanates; by him ignorance is destroyed. The Vedic scriptures sing of his character.(Verse 3,Guru Vandana) Our spiritual master will reveal it into our heart. We are really wanting to know how to do this right, whether it is right or wrong, then you will be provided with the answer. God has His ways to get back to you or reciprocate with you, respond to you, through some devotees, through some scripture, or when you read something.
It clicks suddenly. Suddenly some light comes, Oh! now I know.

Question: Should we chant Panhatattva pranam mantra before we start chanting?
Answer: The mantra to Pancatattva should be chanted. Srila Prabhupada would say that the Pancatattva mantra is also a maha-mantra. Hare Krishna maha- mantra and Pancatattva Maha-mantra. So Pancatattva maha-mantra is chanted before we start chanting Hare Krishna. We pray for Their Mercy, to chant without offences, to chant with attention, or to forgive us for any offences we have committed. Caitanya Mahaprabhu is kinder and He is not alone. He has come with the whole team. Without Their mercy, we would not be successful. We beg for Their Mercy.

patita-pavana-hetu tava avatara

mo sama patita prabhu na paibe are (From Prarthana, by Srila Narottama Dasa
Thakura – Verse 2)

You are patit pavan and I am patit. Patit pavan – purification, you purify me. I am patit and you do pavan, purify me. mo sama patita prabhu na paibe are.

Pancatattva also includes Gaur Bhakta Vrinda. Srivasa Adi Gaur Bhakta Vrnda is headed by Srivas. All the others are also part of the Pancatattva. We could also approach those devotees – the spiritual master or some other senior devotees. Approaching them and beg for their Mercy. We say:

vancha-kalpatarubhyash cha
kripa-sindhubhya eva cha
patitanam pavanebhyo
vaishnavebhyo namo namah ( Vaisnava pranam mantra)

Same thing is here. Vancha kalpataru.… Patit – fallen, pavanebhyo – purify. You are competent to lift me up, purify me O! Vaisnava Any other questions? Or I was thinking , tomorrow also we will do Japa. We could do some questions-answers session. We will not do Japa-talk, but have a dialogue. So come with your question. We will take one quick question from the back.

Question: While chanting should we concentrate on the name or the form of the
Lord?

Answer: Sound is Krsna and form is Krsna . So what we chant is the name. From name comes the form then comes the qualities of Krsna then the pastimes of Krsna. In order to perform pastimes, Krsna requires devotees, His associates.
Also to have pastimes of Krsna He doesn't play pastimes in the air. He does that on land , His abode or dhama , which is all part of Krsna, non different from Krsna. So name and form are non different. Should I just focus on form? The name or on the form? The very question is ignorant. Because of ignorance it arises. The understanding is that, 'name is form'.

caitanya-rasa-vigrahah
purnah suddho nitya-mukto
bhinnatvan nama-naminoh

TRANSLATION:

The holy name of Krsna is transcendentally blissful. It bestows all spiritual benedictions, for it is Krsna Himself, the reservoir of all pleasure. Krsna’s name is complete, and it is the form of all transcendental mellows. It is not a material name under any condition, and it is no less powerful than Krsna Himself. Since Krsna’s name is not contaminated by the material qualities, there is no question of its being involved with maya. Krsna name is always liberated and spiritual; it is never conditioned by the laws of material nature. This is because the name of Krsna and Krsna Himself are identical.(CC Madhya-lila 17.133) Name and form are abhinna. Bhinna means different. Abhinna means non-different.

Nama namino, there is no difference between nama and nami. Nama is name, and nami is Krsna the Lord. His name is Krsna. And he is Krsna. Name and He are non different. When you are hearing, you should be meditating on the form of the Lord. Nama is Nama Prabhu.The name is a person that is why we say Nama Prabhu, Krsna Prabhu. We should feel , I am a soul and He is my Prabhu, my Lord. Name and He are non different. We should be meditating on name form, qualities, pastimes, abode and devotees. Radharani is a devotee. Gopis are devotees. Lalita Vishakha are devotees.

When we are chanting 'Hare Krishna', we are praying to the holy name. By your own sweet opulences which are of various kinds, mam cittam, my consciousness be attracted , by your opulences. Lord's opulences are, described in whole tenth chapter of Bhagavad-gita. There various opulences are described.

The six opulences are that He has full strength, full fame, wealth, knowledge, beauty and renunciation. These are all His opulences. The chanter is saying, which we talked while mentioning commentary of Gopal Guru Goswami. He has written a commentary on the Hare Krishna maha-mantra and this is his commentary. The commentary is a prayer which is explaining each name. Hare , he is explaining , ' O Lord! Let my mind be attracted to you. madhurya, I want to be attracted by your madhurya. Lord Sri Krsna has rupa-madhurya. His form is Madhur.

adharam madhuram vadanam madhuram
nayanam madhuram hasitam madhuram
hrdayam madhuram gamanam madhuram
madhuradhi-pater akhilam madhuram

TRANSLATION
1) His lips are sweet, His face is sweet His eyes are sweet, His smile is sweet His heart is
sweet, His gait is sweet—Everything is sweet about the Emperor of sweetness! (Sri
Madhurastakam Verse 1)

Everything about You is sweet. You are ‘madhuradhipati’, the Reservoir of all sweetness. His form , rupam madhuram, rupa-madhurya , venu- madhurya, leela- madhurya, prema-madhurya. Krsna is known for this four madhuryas. Very
distinguished features of the Lord. I want to be attracted by all these opulences.

Seva yogyam kuru. Please engage me in your devotional service. Srila Prabhupad simplified this commentary. He explained, while chanting devotee is thinking , 'lord! or o Radharani ! I am yours. Please engage me in your devotional service.' Seva yogyam kuru. Make me fit to serve You.

ei nivedana dhara, sakhira anugata koro
seva-adhikara diye koro nija dasi
Tulasi Krishna preyasi name namah

I beg you to make me a follower of the cowherd damsels of Vraja. Please give me the privilege of devotional service and make me your own maidservant. (Tulasi Kirtana, Verse 4)
 
Tulasi is very dear to Krsna. He likes her. Make me eligible. This is also a part of the prayer, while chanting the holy names. All these thoughts , they emanate from Hare Krishna Hare Krishna…… When we say Hare Krishna we have said
everything. Everything that could be said or spoken, is uttered when we say Hare Krishna because this Hare Krishna which is Radha-Krsna contains everything. It contains all the knowledge that exists.

John 1:1 is the first verse in the opening chapter of the Gospel of John of the Bible which reads: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

In the beginning there was the word – shabda and that was with the Lord. That word could be Hare Krishna. That word is God and the Bible says the word is God. So Hare Krishna is God. It is not just the empty word. Prabhupada explains, ‘ In this world the name and the object are two different things. If you are thirsty and you go on saying Water! Water! Water! That won't quench your thirst. Or if you want to eat some sweet mango and you go on saying, Mango! Mango! You are not going to experience the sweetness of the mango as the word mango and the actual mango are different. But here the name is the object – Hare Krishna Hare Krishna is Krsna.

12TH SEPTEMBER

(Part – 2)

Bhakti Vinod Thakura explains that inattentive chanting is the cause of all the offences we commit. After reciting the ten offenses before we start chanting what do we say at the end? We say that the goal of life is to chant Hare Krishna every devotee who wishes to obtain the goal of life which is to attain Krsna should be chanting attentively. So that is the defect. We may be sleeping everyday during chanting. Sleeping or sleepy are two separate things. Sleeping is fully sleeping. You are in bed and sleeping. Sleepy means you are half asleep, getting up in between and trying to chant Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare sssssss….. That's sleepy which is half asleep. You are inattentive.

It is an offence. When we say Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, that means we are calling Krsna. You called Him so he has come, but you are not there to receive Him. You called , but if you are sleepy, you are not there to receive the Lord. Thank you for responding to my appeal, my call. I called and You have come. I pay my obeisances to You. Please have a seat. Let's talk. Let's be here, I am going to take Your darsana. So instead of reciprocating or dealing with the Lord, like that, what happens when you are sleepy, you have called and He has come paying attention to you. He is at the door, ringing the doorbell. I am here! I am here! In the meantime you are off, you are out of station or you are sleeping or your mind has gone somewhere else even though you called Him. I am just saying that this is something that we do over again and again and again. So we have to do it right.

You are not sure whether you are doing it appropriately, the way it is expected and desired, and if you are not sure you should enquire whether this is correct or wrong. There are so many aspects of chanting. Being in samadhi or fully absorbed. The level that we wish to attend. That's the final step of the ladder. We have to make sure that of all the previous levels we are doing things correctly. I said yesterday that we could apply this ashtanga yoga of Patanjali, which Sri Krsna has explained in the sixth chapter of Bhagavad-gita. We should aim at that meditation because ours is mantra meditation. Ashtanga yogis maybe meditate on paramatma.

Our meditation is on Radha Krsna. Like this meditation, – yam niyam. Do this! Don't do this! It means following the four regulative principles. Don't do this! No meat eating; no fish eating; no this; no that! This is yam. If you do that Yamraj will come. So that's yam and niyam – they are all positive rules that you are expected to do. There is vidhi and nishedh. Some prohibitions are there like, ‘Don't drink and drive' 'Drive on the right side' in India. So vidhi and nishedh. In English we say do's and don'ts.

Or paap and punya.

Yam niyam then there is asan. We were talking briefly yesterday, 'sit properly'. We are sitting in sukhasana or padmasana or vajrasana. These are the correct asanas for chanting. Yam niyam aasan, pranayam, which is controlling your breath. You take a deep breath and chant….

… once, twice, thrice. Take a deep breath and chant one mantra, two mantras, sometimes some devotees manage five mantras in one breath. Create a rhythm. So breath control results in mind control. Breath control has a connection with mind control. They are closely related. This is in the mode of goodness. Take a deep breath and chant. There is passionate breath. You have a passion for different kinds of breaths. Your breathing is fast and the mind is also moving fast. Or there is ignorant breath. It may be deep. Our whole nervous system may be weak. Then the blood in the lung is reaching your brain. Then you feel fresh and alert. If the blood supply is not reaching the brain, maybe when we eat too much, the blood supply is going to the digestive system. All the blood is directed to wherever there is activity.

So the blood supply to the brain is low then you are sleepy. Specially after a meal you feel sleepy right? After a full meal, isn't it? Because the blood is directed towards the action point which is the stomach. The body is a machine. We have to know how it functions. Part of that machine is the mind. It's a part of the machine.

Our body is made up of the mind also. The body is made up of intelligence also. We have to understand our mind and intelligence and its functions. How do they function favourably for chanting. Anyway so this is breathing or pranayam. We should pay some attention to this. Yam niyam aasan pranayam and pratyahar.

We know there is atyaharah.
atyaharah prayasas ca
prajalpo niyamagrahah
jana-sangas ca laulyam ca
sadbhir bhaktir vinasyati

One’s devotional service is spoiled when he becomes too entangled in the following six activities: (1) eating more than necessary or collecting more funds than required; (2) overendeavoring for mundane things that are very difficult to obtain; (3) talking unnecessarily about mundane subject matters; (4) Practicing the scriptural rules and regulations only for the sake of following them and not for the sake of spiritual advancement, or rejecting the rules and regulations of the scriptures and working independently or whimsically; (5) associating with worldly-minded persons who are not interested in Krsna consciousness; and (6) being greedy for mundane achievements. ( NOI verse 2)

So like this there is sadbhir bhaktir vinasyati – 6 things could destroy your devotional life. That statement in the Nectar of Instruction begins with atyaharah. atyaharah means ati aharah too much of eating. 'Ati' means too much, too much of eating. Too much consumption. In the ashtanga yoga process the fifth step is pratyaharah which means countering. We have done atyaharah so now we have to do pratyaharah Aharah means eating. Aharah means not only that the tongue eats, but our eyes and our ears also eat. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakur explains in his book Bhaktyaloka. All our senses have their own kind of food. Objects of senses are the food of the senses. shabda, sparsha, rupa, rasa, gandha, the shabda- sound, sparsha – touch, rupa- the form, gandha – the smell. So those are our senses.

We are bhakti yogis. We are japa yogis. Japa is a yoga. Japa yogis have to work on pratyaharah. And that it may not necessarily be during chanting time only. There is a preparation for chanting. I have been saying this always, for tomorrow's chanting we have to prepare today.

Whenever we are not chanting, we have to prepare for the next time for tomorrow,. Pratyaharah means minimising the consumption of the sense objects in quantity and quality. So this is pratyaharah. What to see what not to see, what to hear , what not to hear, how much to hear, what to speak and what not to speak. Krsna's devotees hear about Krsna.Like that all the senses could be employed in the service of the Lord. They are controlled when employed. So this is mind control, sense control. This has to be done. It's a part of pratyaharah. This of course is done with the help of the intelligence. Chanting is the activity of intelligent persons.

krsna-varnam tvisakrsnam
sangopangastra-parsadam
yajñaih sankirtana-prayair
yajanti hi su-medhasah

Translation:
In the Age of  Kali , intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the name of Krsna. Although His complexion is not blackish, He is Krsna Himself. He is accompanied by His associates, servants, weapons and confidential companions. (CC Adi lila 3.52)

If the chanter wishes to be a successful chanter of the holy name, he has to be intelligent. He has to discriminate right from wrong. This is right and this is wrong. This is the pratyaharah path. When the mind and senses are involved, intelligence has to keep an eye on the mind and senses. And intelligence has to give direction to the mind. Do this! Don't do this! Shut up! Intelligence should guide like that.

As soon as we see a photo of Radha and Krsna, the intelligence tries to see the form which says, 'The Lord is standing before you. Here is the Lord of my heart.’ Intelligence has to do this. I have lot of discriminations, do – don't, quantity – quality is evaluated, ascertained. So these are all preparations. Yam, niyam, asan, pranayam, pratyahar dhyan, dharma, and samadhi. We are getting closer to samadhi, total absorption and meditation.

After the 5th stage we are getting closer, till then it was all preparations. Final act of concentration, meditation is to retain, be more focused. By now the mind is free from contamination and is more under control, controlled by the divine intelligence. So it tries to retain Krsna, Krsna's form, Krsna's qualities and is focused on Them.
